渦の家　ピットイン記

ベルリンから空を飛んで三時間、ジョージアはクタイシ市へ。空港の周りには山も見えたがどこか殺風景な印象であった。外に出ると暖かい湿った風が入り込んできた。

そこからバスに揺られ首都トビリシのFreedom squareに到着。

トビリシに着いた頃には空は薄暗くなる前のゴールデンタイムで街も人も輝いておりました。古い建物が立ち並びながらもそれに新しい建物が乗っかっていて融合している。そこらじゅうに坂や段差がある。トビリシは大きな谷の中にある街といったところでしょうか。大きな道は傾斜も少なくなだらかなのですが、少し横道にそれると急に急な坂が現れるのです。それらの坂を下りたところには川が流れていて、もちろん川の向こう側にも同様に街が広がっていました。上手に説明はできませんが、ブダとペストのような関係性も見えました。

今回は友人たちを訪ねることが目的だったので、事前情報もありませんでした。ジョージアと言われてもピンとこない方も多いと思いますが私もその一人でした。

何より今回はジョージアの調査ではなく、友人たちがトビリシでやっている“渦の家（UZU　HOUSE）”というプロジェクトを見に行くのが目的でした。これはドイツのライプツィヒにある”日本の家（Das Japanische Haus）”の妹分のプロジェクトだそうです。

日本の家も渦の家もそれが週二回炊き出しをしていて、誰でもそこに来てよいというのです。時には音楽をしてイベントをしてと、色々な催しもあるそうです。

渦の家の彼らは元気そうでした。彼らが作り出すもの、流れてきている人、渦の家はそんな素敵な空間を作る場所になっていました。ゆっくりとした風が流れておりました。

この渦の家がジョージアに誕生したのはおよそ3年前で、現在とは違う街の中心でやっていたのですが、家賃の高騰に耐え切れず現在の中心部からは少し離れた民家の多い現在の地に引っ越したのだそう。その新しい家はジョージアの昔の大家族向けの家なのでしょうか。リノベーションしなくてはならないところがどこかしこに転がっているわけですし、本気を出せば新しい部屋も作れる。そういったものを直したりしながら大工作業を覚えて、さらに創造で空間ができていく楽しさが見えてなんだか羨ましく思う空間でした。人生を見つめなおしております。渦の家に住んでみたい方は常に探しているとか、、、

そしてジョージアの思い出となると、、彼らを訪ねた次の次の日から渦の家で何かフェスティバルに出店するということで合計10日いましたが、最後の二日以外はずっと友人と遊んでいる感じでした。

たったの十日でもその土地の顔や骨格がなんとなーくわかったということでしょうか。鼻の高い人が多く、目がぐりっとしていて大きな耳も大きな口も持っていました。土地が土地なだけに体もがっしりしていました。

ジョージアは地政学的にも不安定でロシアやヨーロッパ連合との関係の中で現在でも揺れているようです。変化を余儀なくされているこの街を歩くだけでも何か権力の臭いとうものなのか、何かエネルギーを感じたのは正直なところです。きっとここは昔から人が交々する一つのルートだったのだろうとも思います。何よりこの土地にある魂のようなものでしょうか、温泉好きには最高の公共浴場もあり、水源から出てくる熱いお湯には何か魂を感じました。

そしてジョージアはあまり税金が高くないということで、デジタルノマドをしている人も多いみたいです。そんな人たちの話やそんな人たちについての話も聞くことも見ることができました。旅をしながら生きるというのはなんとも現代の新しい生き方というしかありません。

そして帰りにはなんとトルコにもよることができました。いつか経由する飛行機が飛べなくなってイスタンブールに一日滞在しましたが、今回は7時間アンタルヤという町に。

ジョージアで、ある世界を旅し続けている韓国人の人と話していて、なぜ旅をしてるのかと聞いたら、「旅が何なのかを知りたいのさ」と言われました。飛行機で旅をするのは気も引けますが、またちゃんと旅をしたいなと心から思いました。変ないがみ合いのない世界であってほしいものですね。

いやはやイロコイ十日間でした。やっぱり旅はよいものですね。

Vous recherchez une histoire d’amour mêlant mafia et relations toxiques ? Dans ce cas, vous allez adorer cover up! Avec Geumhwa et Ryusei, vous serez servis en émotions et en action ! Chacun portant un lourd passé avec lui, les deux hommes se rencontrent dans le cadre du travail avant de nouer une relation plus intime. Mais très rapidement, l’ex de Geumhwa vient rendre les choses impossibles, et tordre les sentiments de chacun avec sa manipulation vicieuse.

Avec des personnages aussi complexes que bien élaborés, vous vous enfoncerez dans les sentiments humains, leur complexité et leur beauté avec Cover up. Touchant la délicate question de la relation avec un pervers narcissique, elle en retrace cependant tous les traits caractéristiques avec beaucoup de réalisme ce qui rend cette histoire aussi difficile que belle. Vivant avec Geumhwa la peur quotidienne du manipulateur, et la hantise de son retour où qu’il soit et à n’importe quel moment de sa vie, vous vous sentirez vous aussi enfermer dans cette relation toxique et malsaine dont la victime a toujours beaucoup de mal à sortir.

Mais rassurez-vous, Cover up finit bien. Ryusei, qui lui aussi traine ses poids derrière lui, sera la porte de sortie de Geumhwa, et surement son salut. D’un caractère très doux et sensibles derrière des airs effrayants, son personnage extrêmement attachant s’accorde très bien avec le fragile et blessé Geumhwa, qui a plus de mal à saisir ses propres sentiments.

Si la question des relations toxiques est un sujet sensible pour vous, alors Cover up est peut-être à éviter pour ne pas raviver d’anciennes blessures, mais si vous êtes intéressés par la question, et êtes en quête d’une histoire bien écrite et bien narrée sur le sujet, alors je vous recommande ce manhwa. Aussi beau graphiquement que narrativement, cette œuvre en 30 chapitre est un chef œuvre artistique dont le dessin d’une rare qualité ravit les yeux du lecteur à chaque page tournée. Les amateurs de tatouages seront particulièrement ravis….

Are you looking for a love story involving the mafia and toxic relationships? Then you'll love to cover up! With Geumhwa and Ryusei, you will be served with emotions and action! Each carrying a heavy past with them, the two men meet at work before forming a more intimate relationship. But very quickly, Geumhwa's ex-girlfriend comes along to make things impossible, and twist everyone's feelings with his vicious manipulation.

With characters as complex as they are well crafted, you will delve into human feelings, their complexity, and beauty with Cover up. Touching on the delicate issue of dealing with a narcissistic pervert, she nevertheless traces all the characteristics with great realism which makes this story as difficult as it is beautiful. Living with Geumhwa the daily fear of the manipulator, and the haunting of his return wherever he is and at any time of his life, you will also feel locked in this toxic and unhealthy relationship from which the victim always has great difficulty getting out.

But rest assured, Cover ends well. Ryusei, who also drags his weight behind him, will be Geumhwa's way out, and surely his salvation. With a very sweet and sensitive character behind his scary looks, his extremely endearing character fits very well with the fragile and wounded Geumhwa, who has more difficulty grasping his own feelings.

If the issue of toxic relationships is a sensitive one for you, then Cover up might be best avoided to avoid rekindling old wounds, but if you are interested in the issue, and are looking for a well-written and narrated story on the subject, then I recommend this manhwa. As beautiful graphically as it is narrative, this 30-chapter work is an artistic masterpiece whose rare quality drawing delights the reader's eyes with every page turned. Fans of tattoos will be particularly delighted...

Review:

Hmmmm? What to say? I didn’t particularly like this story but I think it’s good. Let me explain. There is very real and dark themes of abuse and rape/non-con in this story. Unlike like many yaoi/BL’s where the rape/non-con does not seem to affect the characters and is portrayed as if that is just how things happen, this rape/non-con is an integral plot point. It affects the main character and informs some of their future choices. There is a gangster/mob element, but again it was another dark layer added to this story. The ending is bittersweet but I liked it. The art is phenomenal and the entire work is in color. The coloring for the piece matches it’s darker themes. All in all it’s a good work.

確かにここは日本の常識、と言うかそもそも法律が違う。噂のコーヒーショップでは壁に染み込んでいる大麻の香り。それは店の中を優しく包み込んで、なんともアロマティックで悪ない。

多くの店員の笑顔は優しくて、ギャルだって来る。でもなんでこれがいいのかわからない。あれはドラッグではないのか。ルールがあるんだかないんだか。 でもなんだか皆幸せそうに見えたな。夜にかけてだんだんと、そしてぼんやりとしていく街は格別に美しかった。その街を照らす外灯は人や建物や街の雰囲気を美しくする照明のようだったとカタモトも言っていた。そのなんとも言えない薄暗い暗闇に一目惚れしたのもわかる。 旅には何があるかわからない。でも旅は与えてくれる。新しいアイディアだ。人生の新しいルールだ。オランダはそういう意味でもクリエイティブな国であり、その大麻政策を見れば一目瞭然、そのルールはつくられている。 雨が降り太陽が顔を出し空が包む。

Merroir Terroir at Terrapin

We had a great night at Terrapin’s Merroir Terroir event hosted at the bar. The restaurant has been hosting these exploratory dinners that allow guests to sample the affect “merroir” has the flavor of the clam. Climate, water, the beds the oysters mature in, all effect the flavor the bivalve. Brian Williams of Terrapin paired our oysters with a select wine that complimented the three different oysters we were served.

Merroir Terroir starts a little early before the dinner crowd shows up. At the bar, our places were set and the resident mixologist—Erika Caylor—helped Brian and staff get us ready. Our oysters were provided by Chris Ludford of Pleasure House Oysters. Chris is a local oyster farmer and firefighter; he’s been seeding and harvesting oysters since 2009. Before farming his own oysters he was a crabber, fisherman, and he sold other peoples oysters from stands around Virginia Beach.

After the seats became occupied, Chris began to give us some info about oysters and harvesting them. I learned that oyster harvesting starts around October here and ends April 30th. He talked about the different spots he liked to start his oysters and talked about the waterways in the area. He also told us a neat tidbit about oyster shells—oysters from the West Coast tend to have a scalloped shell while those on the East Coast do not. Before we started to eat the oysters he suggested we sniff, drink the liquor, then eat the oyster. Easy enough, let’s go!

While this was happening Brian poured our first wine, Domaine Jolly Petit Chablis 2011. He explained to us how the Chablis he served was from Portlandian soil, young and steely. The wine itself was unoaked to prevent it from overpowering the oysters. That brings us to the oysters: Kusshi oysters imported from the West Coast. They are small with thick shells, ours were tumbled and lost most of the frill outside of the shell. The thick, deep shells of the oysters held clean, sweet meat and a tasty liquor. West Coast oysters, at least the ones we ate, tended to be smaller than what we’re used to in the East.

The next wine we drank was a Louis Jadot Steel Chardonnay 2012, again this was unoaked and had fruitier notes. The sweetness of this wine was perfect for the salty Pleasure House Oysters, Chris’ own brand he breds in the Lynnhaven. In addition to the pronounced saltiness of the oyster, they were crisp, juicy, and had a little citrus. I like how that paired with the Chardonnay too. I loved the liquor in the huge shells on the plate. I think I heard the term “choker” used in reference of the size of these things.

Our last wine was a Lincourt Steel Chardonnay 2012. From the Sta Rita Hills in California, fermented in steel, fruit forward and low mineral. The oyster paired with this was the Kumamoto or “Kumis”. They were harvested from cold waters of the Puget Sound in Washington State. These were delicious—buttery, crisp, and nutty. I could have eaten a couple dozen of these myself. The shell on these were very scalloped, unlike the Kusshi we tried earlier and the color variation went from off-white to black.

After finishing our oysters Chris and Brian mingled with the patrons of the dinner and answered any questions we might have had. While Shelby and I got our things together I was already thinking about next month’s Merroir Terroir, hoping I’ll be able to make the event again.
