Just a Box

He had lost his hat. His favorite hat. Val thought it made him look like a Gondola rider, but he didn't care. He love that hat. And he had lost it. He'd already searched through half of the apartment, and was now throwing things hap-hazardously out of his closet and onto his bed. He'd been meaning to clean it out but, well, he didn't have the energy nor the patience for that extent of exerted energy. So many clothes from his past were ripped off of their hangers and thrown behind him. That early 2000's look... He cringed. Shirts that never should have been bought... was he 15? Then belts, ties, that one time he'd had his ears pierced... competition suits, was that hair gel? And then a box. A small, hinged, black leather box fell into his  hands.    

"What the?" And then he remembered. The box went flying out of the bedroom and landed somewhere in the  kitchen.

"S***, s***, s***." That was gone. It was supposed to be gone. He ran his fingers though his  hair. He had given it away, or thrown it away, or thrown it out of the  window, he was sure he had.

He had dreamed of running it over with a car or burning it, though he doubted diamonds would burn, or giving it to a homeless child. Anything to get it off his hands and out of his life.

One night, in his very intoxicated state, he had nearly driven to her house and broken in to place the box on her kitchen table, or her bed, or her sleeping body that was completely unaware of the pain he was going through.

But he couldn't. He couldn't give it away. How could he part with  something that symbolized all of his love? He had stressed over the contents of that box, lost sleep over the  contents of that box, and ultimately lost twelve pounds over the contents of that box. It had been worth it though, to see the look on her face when she first opened it, to see the love in her eyes when she looked at  him. Perhaps it was all a lie, perhaps his heart was beating too loudly for him to hear the hesitation in her words, for him not to notice her lack of surprise. But at the time he felt everything was perfect.

The box was now sitting just outside his bedroom door, waiting for him. It was  embarrassing the way it still affected him. His palms were sweaty; his  face was undoubtedly beet red, but he bent down anyway.

It felt light in his hands, lighter than he remembered. Of course,  he'd only really held it on two occasions. When he'd given it to her,  and when she'd given it back. Now it seemed far less daunting as he  knelt there with it in his hands. It was just a box. Just a little black  box.

Then he opened it.

He shouldn't have opened it. He should have left it shut, let it remain as just a little black box. Now it lay open in his palms and he felt the tears beginning to form.  Because he felt the passion he had felt all those years ago. That  mixture of admiration, then love and lust, then numbness, then  hatred and destruction, then years of pent up frustration, but always  love. How could he ever stop loving her?

From those early days in the competition world, where he would  nervously make his way up to her after their dances were over. To the  first day he learned she'd joined the show. To their first dance  together. To the first time she said yes. To the last time she said no. To the first time she won the mirror ball, it would always be her first  time because he refused to believe that she wouldn't win again. To their  first semi-civil words shared. To Broadway, part two. To his "top five" comment. To Ballroom with a Twist. To what  followed. To their silence. Even now, he had always continued to love  her.

And he knew he shouldn't; he should have moved on by now. But she  had always been one step ahead of him. He had tried to stop competing with  her a long time ago, but when had he ever stopped with her? She had  been kicking his butt since day one. Through every ballroom competition, where she came out on top and he was a solid 30 places behind. To winning the mirror ball before him. To her studio or magazine covers,  or movie career, or ballroom legacy. Even today, she beat him. Never mind the fact that  his studios were growing, or that he had a tri-annual stage show, or that he had  his own mirror ball now, or the fact that he had a steady girlfriend while she had no one, she still beat him.

Because she'd captured his heart all those years ago, and she'd never given it back.

And as cliche  and childish as that sounded, it was the truth. End result, right? That  was what he was always preaching. End result. Well, the end result here was that she was happy. She had Slavik; she had DWTS. She had a whole community of ballroom legends to fall back to. She was a ballroom legend. He was nothing compared to her. He had built his life from scratch, had a jewelry line, had a large and ever growing family, and yet that was all nothing. Nothing compared to her.

He closed the box. He got up and returned to his room. He carefully maneuvered around the clothing strewn across his floor and stood in front of his closet. And then he reached and placed the box in the farthest, darkest corner he could find. A place only he would think to look. And then he began to cover it, with shoe boxes, and neatly folded shirts. It could have been minutes, it could have been hours, but eventually his closet was back intact, everything neatly organized. He even had a pile set aside to give to charity. And the box could not be seen. Which was perfect.

Perhaps he would forget about it. Perhaps he would move away and that box  would not make it to his new home. But it would always exist. As would his love for her. Even now, as he lay on his bed, pondering about another box he needed to go pick up, for another girl, he couldn't stop the pounding in his chest. And so he closed his eyes and tried to fight back the tears because end result was  life goes on. There was another girl that deserved his love now. And so he needed to bury his feelings away because everyone else had moved on. Little did he know that on another bed, in a different room, a  woman was close to tears, thinking the exact same thing.
