Novotney: When Will She Apologize to the Kids?
No one can qualify them as “Oops” moments, and that’s because issues with water pipes and black mold don’t develop without warning. But that’s how the administration of Wheeling University acted in mid-February when forced to move 25 students out of 18 living areas in a dormitory. Not their fault. No way. But, according to the students, they offered plenty of red flags about Ignatius Hall, the McDonough Center, the absence of faculty and support staff, the lack of communication from the university’s administration, and a fear of retribution for telling their parents, their friends, and, worse of all, anyone with the press. When about 40 of the students rebelled and rallied along Washington Avenue a few months ago, they wore masks to hide their identity. They did that in America. The land of the free. There’s no excuse for a college campus to host that kind of atmosphere. Students should fear not being prepared for exams and not be scared their scholarships could be taken away or their grades changed. But that’s what they told us … quietly, of course. Plus, social media accounts were created and, although inaccurate on occasion, the veiled reporters offered alarming insight that angered an alumni base and a city full of graduates and supporters once proud to have such a respected school smack-dab in the middle of the municipality. Now that the board has taken action – finally – and the mess is being sorted and surprises discovered, this question remains: When does Ginny Favede, suspended president, apologize to the students? There is no need for some useless diatribe blaming former administrations and construction crews, and no one wants to hear the ole “successes despite” speech, either. Nope, in this case, only one statement will work. “I am sorry.” For the lack of staff and faculty to ensure a quality education was received. For the mold. For the water issues. For the lack of functionality of dorms, athletic facilities, and laboratories. For broken HVAC systems, and elevators. For the heavy hand at the top. And for placing children in danger. When? Day 20 of my 30 Day Favourite Actor Challenge. Today it's my Favourite Dance. There's been a few times where Sebastian's danced either as himself or in character, but this part, from "Picnic" is one of my favourites, because the I love how intimate the moment is. In the actual play they're dancing and ignoring the activity around them, and it's just beautiful. 🕺😍🤗💋💘💜💚💙💛 @imsebastianstan #30DayChallenge #MyFaveActor30DayChallenge #Day20 #SebastianStan #imsebastianstan #FaveDance #HalCarter #Picnic

Roast beef sandwich, My Favorite Deli
I love the idea of a simple, freshly made sandwich. Sometimes I’m not hungry enough for a big meal, but I want something quick and just filling enough. This fit the bill, but with a $7.80 price tag it’s a dollar too expensive for nothing special.
Bonus points for My Favorite Deli for the free coffee and the corny jokes. (Girl asks if she can have a fork. Proprietor answers, “You have fingers, right?”)

Wheeling University Has Sanction Lifted by Higher Learning Commission
The Higher Learning Commission (HLC) has removed the sanction of probation for Wheeling University, effective immediately. The HLC took this action during its meeting on February 23. In a letter to Wheeling University President Ginny R. Favede, the accrediting body noted the “HLC took this action based on the institution’s ability to demonstrate it is now in compliance with all of HLC’s Criteria for Accreditation.” The HLC stated in its report to Wheeling that the University “has made significant progress in all areas of concern that resulted in the sanction of probation … Notably, the progress in reversing the enrollment free-fall, in returning to growth, and in beginning the process to make plans and projections more realistic are commendable.” Additionally, the accrediting board noted the University has “stabilized staffing after a period of downsizing and employee turnover associated with fiscal exigency,” returning to regular academic and operational processes. Also, it applauded “the institution’s demonstrated improvements and its return to compliance with HLC criteria.” “We are forever grateful for God’s continued grace on Wheeling University and thankful to the HLC Board of Trustees for its decision,” said President Favede. “This is wonderful news, and the culmination of two years of hard and dedicated work of our faculty, staff, alumni and Board of Trustees, and their steadfast commitment to Wheeling University. “ Accreditation by HLC, commonly known as ‘regional accreditation,’ is awarded to qualifying higher education institutions following an investigation by independent external auditors through the Higher Learning Commission. It validates the quality of an institution’s academic programs at all levels. Regional accreditation is highly regarded worldwide because it is a comprehensive, peer-reviewed process that ensures a consistent quality standard for higher education institutions. Institutional accreditation by the HLC assures current and prospective students that credits and degrees earned from Wheeling University meet quality higher education standards and ensures that Wheeling students are eligible to take advantage of all federal and state financial aid programs. President Favede said, “The University community viewed this challenge as an opportunity to improve as an institution. At Wheeling University, resilience is part of our institutional DNA. On behalf of the Wheeling University’s Board of Trustees, I thank the faculty, staff, and students for their herculean effort in making this accomplishment possible. While this is exciting news, all of us at Wheeling University remain committed to constantly assessing our work to continuously grow and improve Wheeling University. In addition, our commitment remains to provide our students an excellent education, grounded in Ignatian principles, which has been our top priority since 1954.” In February 2021, the HLC changed Wheeling’s status from ‘accredited’ to ‘accredited – on probation.’ Since then, the University remained fully accredited, and this status did not alter its ability to award degrees or its status regarding academic programs. At that time, the Higher Learning Commission also removed the financial distress designation it imposed on the University in May 2019. The Higher Learning Commission posted Wheeling University’s change of status on its website Tuesday, Feb. 28. Read the full article
