West Siberian Laikas have the most diversity and lineages to choose from due to being more popular. They originate from the Ob River basin.
The Yenisei is what separate West Siberian Laika from East Siberian Laika. East Siberian Laikas are better adapted for continental winters. There's some criticisms of WSL of not being able to hunt below -20°C. That being said, registration of ESLs is declining because of the WSL's diversity and their popularity with sport-hunters. Sometimes WSLs are perceived as "better dogs" even though their anatomy and fur-coat are not suited for the region. For instance, East Siberian Laikas would be better for Pam (Michigan) and I (Alberta) given our winters compared to other parts of the United States. But neither one of us have access to them because there is no demand for them in the U.S. and the easily-accessible bloodlines are moose specialists. It takes a lot of networking to import commercial fur-hunting lines straight from the homelands. I like East Siberian Laikas a lot when I met them in person. It's just easier to find a WSL. Russo-European Laikas originate in northeastern Europe from Arkhangelsk, Karelia, Komi Republic as well as Mansi-Khanty province. They are known to be more temperamental and loyal to one person. They are a bit smaller than WSL.
But not as small as the Karelo-Finnish Laika (or what RKF and RORS are calling Karelian Laika nowadays) which is the same as Finnish Spitz, but are more diverse in their hunting abilities instead of being a grouse specialist. During Laika Days in Finland we were told to stay away from the RELs as they don't take kindly to strangers. We were allowed to interact with most of the WSLs and ESLs without needing to ask consent. There was one WSL female we were told not to approach, but she was an outlier. Haven't met a KL or KFL yet.
Have met a few Finnish Spitzes during a bird-trial in Ylivieska. They are much nicer dogs than whatever conformation breeders have going on in the U.S. and Canada, that's for sure.
Differences between the three Laika breeds (Russo-European, West Siberian and East Siberian)?
Typically ESL are the largest and REL are black and white lol I'm not great at describing the different Laika breeds so you can read about them on Vladimir Beregovoy's website: East Siberian Laika West Siberian Laika Russo-European Laika

If some of your other OCS were Nokori, what would they be ? Like as in animal
Let me think...
Yasashii = snow leopard or fox Nokori
Sebastian = Karelo-Finnish Laika Nokori
Kuma = black cat or crow Nokori
That's all I can think of right now--

Year of the Dog - West/East Siberian Laika “Deforestation of land for agriculture and industrialization in later 19th-early 20th Centuries accelerated replacement of Laikas with other dogs popular at the time. Russian experts of the late 19th century distinguished dozens of varieties of aboriginal Laikas, each associated with a particular ethnic group of indigenous people of northeastern Europe and Siberia, but none of them had been considered as purebred and pedigreed.
Russians tried to save some hunting Laikas from extinction by bringing them from different provincial parts of Russia in cities of European part of the country and breeding them pure. Starting from 1930 and especially after WW II, they established four breeds as purebreds: the Karelo-Finnish Laika, the Russ-European Laika, the West Siberian Laika and the East Siberian Laika. They all are bark-pointing dogs and their hunting behavior is generally similar. All of them are descendants of aboriginal types of Laikas selectively sampled from large territories and lumped into the four breeds for breeding in kennels. Among all of them, the West Siberian Laika became most popular and by present time it is most numerous Laika far beyond its original range in Russia.”

Cover of Hunting Laika Breeds of Russia by Vladimir Beregovoy
This is the second edition and there's a third edition out now that I want to get, it apparently has a lot of the typos fixed and includes a chapter from another laika owner who has four gorgeous imports who hunt bear primarily. This is a great starting book though, with some good information about the four hunting laika breeds (West Siberian, East Siberian, Russo-European, and Karelo-Finnish) and hunting laika information in general, including some history and advice. Beregovoy is the guy who first established WSL here in the USA and is still breeding currently.

Photos from Охотничьи Лайки (Hunting Laiki) by А. Т. Войлочников (A. T. Voylochnikov) and С. Д. Войлочникова (S. D. Voylochnikova).
Top image is two Karelo-Finnish Laika puppies, captioned as such. Bottom image is an adult Karelo-Finnish Laika, a champion named Rimpy, with his registration number, 1049/лкф (LKF for Laika Karelo-Finnish), and owner's name, В. А. Отрывин (V. A. Otryvin). The second image I attached is of the same dog within the laikirus (dot) ru database with some extra info. You can find his pedigree and ancestors there as well! The website is in russian of course, so google translate did its translation.
I'm only able to roughly translate russian currently so *please* correct me if I make any errors on these!

A few of my shelves and my favorite books off of each shelf. While my collection is ✨️broadly✨️ canine, survival, wilderness, nature books, my primary focus is working spitz, coyotes, and white fang.
Working spitz (roughly). Favorites are unshockingly the laika books. Russian reads "Hunting Laiki" (a book overviewing the hunting laika breeds) and "Laiki of West Siberia" (a catalog of individual West Siberian, East Siberian, Russo-European, and Finnish Spitz/Karelo-Finnish Laiki). I would love to add some physical books about the other breeds (and wolfdogs) I love to this shelf but it's hard finding them.
Wild canine books (roughly). Favorite coyote books. Always need more coyote books. Charting Yellowstone Wolves isn't on this shelf but is a favorite of my entire collection and fits with this shelf; I'd love to someday get the newer edition. I also need more La Brea Tar Pits books
Fictional wolf books (roughly). My entire collection of White Fang editions, Call of the Wild editions, and I'm quite happy with my childhood editions of My Side of the Mountain and Julie of the Wolves. I'm on a mission to collect all of the editions of White Fang possible, and all of the pretty editions of Call of the Wild.

I ordered this magazine in October and finally got it today. I bought it specifically because I heard there was an article about Laikas in it, and since it's difficult to find stuff in English on Laikas, I ordered it.
The article is short but good, and the entire magazine is well done.

I'm just gonna say that the mentality around hunting spitz types only being able to ethically be owned by hunters is massively damaging and hilariously incorrect.
Quit painting the picture that these dogs are uncontrollable menaces if not hunted. That they are "wasted" and missing out on a full life if they're active pets. Like every breed in existence, these dogs need to be owned by people who want what the dog is in order for the dog to mesh well in their home. That doesn't mean the dog absolutely must be hunted to be happy. It means that they need someone who understands the proper mental stimulation and physical exercise required in lieu of hunting.
I do hunt my dogs. I also do other things with them both inside and out of hunting seasons. My dogs are not tools that get put away when hunting and pursuit seasons are closed. They are active pets the majority of the year, and not just because they need the exersice when not hunted. I wanted this type of dog because I like to do those things with my dogs and they fit that role extremely well.
Stop being a gatekeeping piece of shit by forcing your opinion down everyone's throat. There would be very slim pickings if people were only allowed to choose from companion breeds. I'd be shit out of luck if I didn't hunt my dogs since there are no companion breeds that fit what I like in a dog.

Bought a copy of Flint's breeder's updated Laika book. I have the old version that isn't in print anymore as well. The book can be ordered directly through the publisher or from Amazon. It is also available as an ebook.
