I very rarely choose names for their meanings, and a lot of them I just make up, but here are a few from Nicea that I thought were interesting. All of the meanings are from Behind the Name.

Althea

Originally chosen just because I liked the sound of it.

From the Greek name Ἀλθαία (Althaia), perhaps related to Greek ἄλθος (althos) meaning "healing".

Me: well that's not very Pirate Queen

In Greek myth she was the mother of Meleager. Soon after her son was born she was told that he would die as soon as a piece of wood that was burning on her fire was fully consumed. She immediately extinguished the piece of wood and sealed it in a chest, but in a fit of rage many years later she took it out and set it alight, thereby killing her son.

Martin

Originally chosen because I liked it/it felt like a good older brother name.

From the Roman name Martinus, which was derived from Martis, the genitive case of the name of the Roman god Mars. Mars Possibly related to Latin mas meaning "male" (genitive maris).

Kara

In Old Canon Cady also had an older sister who I think I never actually named? But instead of dealing with the complication of another sibling and their family, I converted that character concept into Martin's wife. I went with Kara because it felt right, and as an extra little easter egg for a family that was Northern Irish in Old Canon, it's similar to the Irish word for friend.

Variant of Cara. Cara From an Italian word meaning "beloved" or an Irish word meaning "friend".

Apparently I got that one exactly right.

Allison

I don't remember if I picked up the name Allison from Scottish name popularity records or if I just sort of said "haha why not" years ago when I created this character.

From the middle of the 20th century this has primarily been used as a variant of the feminine name Alison. However, prior to that it was used as an uncommon masculine name, derived from the English and Scottish surname Allison. Allison Means "son of Alan" or "son of Alexander" (as well as other given names beginning with Al).

I don't know if I ever looked up the meaning of Allison but uh. His dad's name is Alan so. Kinda literal.

Lord Huron & Allie Crow Buckley Live Show Review: 7/28, Canal Shores Golf Course, Evanston

What is it with Chicago area weather changing the course of our summer festivals? While I wasn’t able to catch Kara Jackson again on Friday at Out of Space, as her set was cut and the bill moved hours up to avoid incoming storms, at least Lord Huron and Allie Crow Buckley provided the crowd at Canal Shores Golf Course a night of high and lonesome, Laurel Canyon-inspired Americana.

The LA indie rock four-piece, who live expand to a sextet, most recently released Long Lost (Republic), in my ears their best album to date due to its embrace of a wider variety of genres--country, baroque pop, and psychedelia, to name a few. Those songs proved to have the greatest impact. The sweeping Spaghetti western stylings of “Mine Forever” radiated an effortless cool to match its romanticism. Miguel Briseño’s upright bass, Mark Barry’s clacking drums, and Misty Boyce’s church organ Mellotron buoyed Ben Schneider’s forlorn confessions on “Love Me Like You Used To”. “I Lied”, which saw Boyce fill in admirably for the studio version’s Allison Ponthier in a duet with Schneider, featured appropriately retro steel guitar from Tom Renaud, the song achieving the same levels of longing and regret as your parents’ favorite country songs. And chugging set closer “Not Dead Yet” was a fitting bookend to the set, considering Schneider’s joke that he received a text when he woke up that lightning would strike the stage at 9 PM, Back to the Future style. “It’s not usually how I like to get my prophecies,” he said, perhaps fully aware that the best Lord Huron songs can prove to be prophetic themselves. Case in point, the band’s performance of “The Night We Met”, as Schneider’s words of terrors and ghosts and hauntings were further soundtracked by the rumbling of nearby L trains--or was that thunder already? 

Buckley, also beginning earlier than anticipated, performed songs with an appropriately languid pace for the hot sun. “Under the Sun” and “Moonlit and Devious” sported deliberate drums and buzzing guitars, respectively, operating at a twinkly sway. Her most recent album Utopian Fantasy (Nettwerk) is a collection of love songs inspired by mythology; notably, they’re defined by an expanded instrumental palate, shimmering synths and dance-oriented beats. Thankfully, the new songs radiated. The bopping “Angel” directly followed and contrasted the drippy “Cusco” and “As I Walk Into the Sea”. And “Dreamboat Soulmate” was a true standout; while the studio version emphasizes choral harmonies and a trip hop beat, live, the full band added the distorted guitars that permeated the performances of songs from Buckley’s back catalog. It was the most fully formed song of the set, Buckley and company at their most captivating.

Fighting With One Hand Tied Behind Her Back

Of all the misogyny directed at Allison Argent, one of the most frustratingly annoying manifestations to me is the idea that the sole reason that she was vulnerable to Gerard's manipulations and fought on his side in the climactic battle in Master Plan (2x12) -- until he betrayed her, that is -- was the suicide of her mother.

Yes, Allison's arc in Season 2 is about the corrupting nature of retributive violence and the danger of letting emotional trauma serve as motivation for violence. Allison acted wrongly. At the end of the season, she acknowledges her own mistakes and takes steps to reclaim herself.

And yet, fandom dismisses this growth as inconsequential, mostly by performing elaborate editing in order to pretend that Victoria's death, though tragic, was ultimately the Argent family's own doing and Allison reaction to it -- hunting down Erica and Boyd and attacking Isaac, Derek, and Scott in the warehouse -- were actions beyond rational thought. (If they're not blaming Scott for not telling Allison about what they see as justification for her mother's death). Fandom often feels -- and does not hesitate to state -- that losing her mother, losing her aunt, being manipulated by her grandfather, losing her relationship with Scott isn't enough for her to seek retributive violence. Indeed, the idea that she has the nerve to start a relationship with Isaac in Season 3A is incomprehensible to them! She was his oppressor!

As a story I read this morning put it, Allison apologizes for treating Isaac that way because "You aren't my enemy."

Yes, he was. Yes. He. Was. (Note, I really like Isaac's character as much as I like Allison's, but if we want to condemn her for her late Season 2 actions -- and ignore her early Season 2 actions -- then we can't really pretend he was an innocent angel baby, either.)

Of the 22 people who died (though several of them didn't stick) in the previous 23 episodes of the series, 19 of them were killed by werewolves or by creatures who were supposed to be werewolves and were bitten by werewolves. The Hale Pack acted exactly as the Argents described them -- violent creatures who kill people. Let's do a count.

This isn't even including physical assaults against her and her friends. She spent an entire episode trying to stop Isaac (and others) from executing Lydia on a hunch. Yet, Allison hunting down the werewolves who tried to kill people, the kanima who tried to kill people, the werewolf alpha who turned them and trained them to kill people somehow makes her worse than them.

The production recognized that she was no better and no worse than the Hales. Which is why she got to stand up to Derek in Chaos Rising (3x02). Which is why she didn't bother to offer an apology to Isaac in Unleashed (3x04). Because they didn't have to offer any to her. They just had to be better.

Fandom has a significant problem with this because they keep looking at the Hale vs. Argent fight and coming to the conclusion that the Hales were right and the Argents were wrong, when they were both wrong. It's ridiculous that fandom can justify Isaac and Erica chasing and attacking Stiles and Allison in Scott's house because they were trying to stop a murderous kanima and then turn around and complain that after spending half-a-season trying to stop werewolves from killing people, Allison had no justification tracking down Boyd and Erica. (The production said neither had justification). It's ridiculous that they think Allison shouldn't have stabbed Isaac, an 'innocent' teenager, in the warehouse and thus has to make amends but Serial-Killer Petey had every reason to gut Jackson, an 'innocent' teenager, during the same fight.

Teen Wolf's mistake was making the Hales white men and the Argent's mostly women (and an old guy). I guarantee that Alan Argent wouldn't have been expected to make it up to Isabella Lahey; it would have just been the consequences of a fight.

Kara Allison, XXL Magazine Eye Candy Section (March 2011 Issue)

Folks love to hear the story, again and again, about how a wayward cutie received her first big break. For Kara Allison, her road to being an Eye Candy was par for the course. "I never thought I could be a model, because of my height and my body," says the Miami native, who, one month after graduating high school (class of 2008!), accompanied her BFF to a casting for Lil Wayne and Bobby Valentino’s 2008 smash "Mrs. Officer". After catching the eye of video director Gil Green, Kara, who was certain her 32DD-24-39 dimensions on her 5-foot-3-inch frame weren’t model-friendly, was given a major spot in the video.

Three years and 12 vids later, the Jamaican beauty and college junior has notched several noteworthy joints, such as Rick Ross’s "Magnificent", featuring John Legend; Maino’s "All the Above" (both in 2009); and, more recently, DJ Khaled’s latest posse cut, "Welcome to My Hood", featuring Rick Ross, Plies, Lil Wayne and T-Pain; and Birdman’s "Fire Flame (Remix)", featuring Lil Wayne, which included a jaw-dropping performance involving sparklers. Not a bad résumé for someone who was just out there supporting a friend. “That casting opened my eyes and made me realize that there are all kinds of models,” Kara says. "And I can be successful at it, as well". Yes, you can.

We had a schoolgirl theme going specifically for your shoot, if you didn’t notice. I can relate to it very well. I am a college student, which goes with the schoolgirl theme. What end of the social spectrum were you at in high school? Were you the introvert, the popular girl, the prom queen…the cheerleader? I guess you can say I was pretty popular. I was in the choir, so I knew a lot of people. I always was a class clown, too, so I got along well with people. Oh yeah? Channel your inner stand-up comic and hit us with a joke. [Laughs] I don’t think I would be good at stand-up at all. I’m more of the sarcastic kind of funny. Like, a smart-ass? Yeah, but I knew pretty much everyone in high school. I did win “Most Attractive” at the prom, which was extremely flattering. Absolutely, but how does the prom’s “Most Attractive” end up twirling sparklers in Birdman’s flammable “Fire Flame (Remix)” video? [Laughs] It was very nerve-racking at first, when they were explaining to me what I would be doing, but, at the same time, very exciting. I love trying new things, and I thought it would come out dope in the end. It did. Weren’t you afraid your hair would be set ablaze, though? They had a professional come in and show me how to use it properly, and I caught on within a couple of minutes. It was actually pretty easy. I tried not to concentrate too much on the sparklers, and concentrate more on my dancing. Do you think your classmates are concentrating on your recent success with scorn?
