There was a shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs parade. That’s my city. My family has gone in years past but thankfully skipped today. There’s no doubt I knew people there, maybe from my high school, from past jobs, from my neighborhood. My sister’s friend is locked in the garage where they’re searching for another shooter. I’m just in shock like this is my city, and somebody had to ruin a day of celebration. We need gun safety laws now

It’s been about 24 hours since shots were fired at the Kansas City Chiefs victory parade in Kansas City, Missouri. It’s taken about that long for me to collect myself and make sure my family and friends who were there are okay. They are. My friend, who is a teacher, will spend today not teaching middle school math as usual but helping calm and support her students, many of whom were there (KC schools were closed for the celebration.)
My heart goes out to everyone who was there for nothing more than a day of fun to celebrate some sportsball on a warm winter’s day and most especially to the mother of two who was killed and the 22 injured, including 11 children.
Fuck the Missouri GOP and fuck the people who vote for these monsters. I’m so god damn angry.

Kansas City Celebratory Parade Shooting Suspects: More Information Released
Lyndell Mays, 23, and Dominic Miller, 18, are the two suspects arrested for the shooting at the Kansas City Chiefs' Parade this past Valentine's Day.
A GoFundMe was posted by Mays' mother sshortly after the incident with a paragraph caption: "He's in the ICU fighting for recovery from several surgeries from going to the Chiefs' Super Bowl celebration with his older sister.
"Getting shot multiple times at a time that was meant to bring so much joy to so many has brought so much pain and sadness to all that were attending."
The fundraiser amassed an amount of approximately $100 for the medical bills from Mays' surgeries, but it was deleted upon his conviction Tuesday.
Mays was found guilty of second-degree murder, two accounts of armed criminal behavior, and unlawful use of a weapon.
It's alleged that Mays and Miller got into an argument with one another shortly before the shooting in the crowd.
A friend of Mays told authorities that many individuals wanted to know why Mays was looking at them.
According to a probable cause statement, Mays was seen aggressively approaching the group and later pointing fingers.
Further observation of the footage allegedly showed Mays drawing his gun and chasing a random, seemingly unarmed, individual which caused a panic and led to other individuals drawing their weapons in self-defense and fear.
The victim of this crime was Lisa Lopez-Galvan, a 43-year-old mother of two, who was described as the 'most wonderful, beautiful person.'
In videos of the act, those less afraid for their lives and more afraid for the lives of others can be seen tackling the suspected shooter shortly after shots were fired.
Mays allegedly pleaded that he was "just being stupid," and knew that he shouldn't have drawn his gun and fired. Mays also claims to be the one that initiated the shootout.
Mays was claiming self-defense because onlookers were allegedly telling him 'I'm going to get you,' which he interpreted as a death threat.
Though Mays was not the one that fired the fate-sealing bullet, he was the first to draw his gun, which led to Miller drawing his gun and firing the shot at Lopez-Galvan
Twenty-two other suffered from injuries from the experience.
Both men are being held on million dollar bonds.

i wish all super bowl parades will forever be cancelled for people’s safety and people would be happy
Absolutely the fuck not.
We can’t just shut down every location and social event that suffers a mass shooting. Like it or not, sports teams are a huge part of people’s cultural identity and they should be able to go out and celebrate what was honestly a fantastic game and a hard fought, well-strategized win without worrying about getting shot.
The solution to gun violence is not to hide. The solution is to legislate the fucking guns.

On today's how fucked up is the world. I just found out about the shooting in Kansas City. Like what in the actual fuck. Can people not kill others? And why at a place with kids? You know what. This world is beyond fucked. And don't even get me started on PALISTINE they deserve so much better than they have. Because we all know damn well that Israel started that war and someone needs to bomb them out of existence or you know shoot their leader. Just saying.

There was a shooting in Kansas City at the Super Bowl parade. I live very close to the city and know people who went to the parade. The messed up thing is that I'm not even surprised, I just thought "well, it was bound to be our turn eventually." Words can't express how disgusted I am at the state of this country.
It doesn't help seeing people who don't live here make jokes about it or brush past it. I understand we're all traumatized by living in this shithole country with nonstop gun violence but that doesn't mean it's okay to not take these matters seriously.

there was just a fucking shooting in my hometown of KC. At least ten people shot and one dead. Happened right after the Super Bowl parade. The governor who was blocking gun regulations in KC had to run for cover. SO MANY SCHOOLS WERE CALLED OFF SO STUDENTS COULD GO TO THIS PARADE.
Three suspects have been detained as part of the investigation.

Exhibit A: Cops are worthless
More than 800 police were on duty Wednesday - 600 KCPD cops and an additional 250 from outside cop shops - for the Chiefs Super Bowl win parade and rally at Union Station. Despite their heavy presence, they failed to stop a mass shooting.
One person, local KKFI radio DJ Lisa Lopez-Galvan, was killed. An additional 22 people were injured, with three still in critical condition. About half the victims are children.
It's believed that the shooting occurred because of a dispute between teenagers who missed each other at least 23 times, not because of terrorism or extremism.
In the wake of this mass shooting - during a run of ever-increasing gun violence (though other crimes are dropping) - Kansas City residents are demanding stricter gun laws. But Missouri state law doesn't allow cities to pass gun-related laws (to stop KC from doing so, specifically), and Missouri has famously lax gun laws.
Cops do almost nothing to protect citizens, and nothing to prevent crime.
They exist merely to punish perpetrators, which has very little effect on violence, especially when state law essentially allows anyone to possess whatever weapons they wish, at any age, regardless of gun safety education, stability, or maturity.
