My personal recs areee

Full Moon wo Sagashite by Arina Tanemura along with her other works if you end up liking this one. Her style is the epitome of 2000s with pretty boys and huge sparkling eyed girls. This one is about a girl with throat cancer who desires nothing more than to be a singer and is granted a final wish by the shinigami who came to take her to be a healthy singer for a year.

Kanata Kara by Kyouko Hikawa was amazing. It dealt with language barriers after being isekaied to a new world and is quite an adventure as the newly isekaied Noriko is actually part of a prophecy that involves an evil known as the Sky Demon. She’s also traveling with a mysterious handsome swordsman named Izark who seems to be hiding some things about himself. And if you end up liking isekai stuff like this, there’s similar stories like Red River or Ouke no Monshou but in those the protag is transported to an ancient time period rather than fantasy world.

I always have to plug Glass no Kamen by Suzue Miuchi cause I’m shameless and want there to be more fans. The romance in it is an age gap (and illegal for a good part of the manga) but if you’re into that ~forbidden love~, I don’t judge. I personally find Maya’s rivalry with a girl who seems to be her total opposite, Ayumi, wayy more compelling. It’s about a plain girl, Maya Kitajima, who’s sole talent and passion is acting and the stage, with her eventually being the candidate to play the Crimson Goddess in the legendary play of the same name.

I also second Lovely Complex, Fruits Basket, and anything by CLAMP.

and if you end up wanting some old-school stuff, there’s Candy Candy by Yumiko Igarashi and Keiko Nagita, Rose of Versailles by Riyoko Ikeda of course, Ace wo Nerae by Sumiko Yamamoto, and Glass no Kamen by Suzue Miuchi which I mentioned above.

Also!! If you like Glass no Kamen and want more passionate manga about the arts, Swan by Kyouko Ariyoshi will scratch that itch!

i actually havent read any shoujo other than sailor moon and would love to! do you have any recommendations for where to start? i love a good romance

I’d love to give a concise answer, but shoujo is such a broad genre that you’re going to have to give me more details about what you’re looking for! I’m also still pretty new to shoujo myself so most of what I've read so far is mahou shoujo (Sailor Moon, Cardcaptor Sakura, Magic Knight Rayearth, Tokyo Mew Mew, Himitsu no Akko-chan, and Nurse Angel Ririka SOS in particular), but I can at least tell you some classics I've read a little of so far or am planning on reading.

Fruits Basket is of course a must-read if you're looking for romance. Aim for the Ace is the shoujo sports manga for me and laid the foundation for girl rivalries with yuri subtext. And as far as the classics are concerned, The Rose of Versailles is there at the top of romance and drama. Akatsuki no Yona is one I really want to read because it's been compared to Arslan Senki, a novel series that I really love and I'd love to see how that premise could be sold to a shoujo demographic (Arslan Senki itself had a shoujo manga adaptation that I want to read sooooo bad but nobody cared to translate it). Kare Kano was one of Gainax's finest anime, so I feel confident in recommending the manga too as it's a really fun romcom. You also can't really go wrong with anything written by CLAMP.

And, of course, Lovely Complex itself is a really well-beloved shoujo romance manga that even got a live action film adaptation. I'm also a sucker for tall girl/ short guy romances (The Kabocha Wine <3333).

The more I think about Kanata, the more I must scream about him. Because all I can picture is this lazy grin spread across his face as he walks around the Butterfly Mansion, idly waiting for his next mission while he's admiring the different sizes, shapes and colors of the different butterflies around him.

Suddenly there's a thud and a dull ache on the back of his head and he turns to see Amari standing there, stone cold as ever.

"You're not training despite your free time. This is how people die." Is all she'll say before walking away. His grin widens as he immediately follows behind her excitedly like a little kid, despite the fact that she's supposed to be the younger one.

"About time you got back, I was starting to think you got lost." He would try to tease. As usual, she gives him no response but it wouldn't bother him as they began their usual training regiment.

My friends and I sometimes clash cuz they're always riding me to train harder *cough* Amari *cough* but I wanna explore the arts more; painting, writing, dancing, that kind of stuff. Maybe when the demons are gone, you'll see me in the papers someday😉

First Form: Cyclone- A quick twist of the torso that summons a powerful wind storm and has the power to blast multiple weak demons to pieces. Can be mastered and strengthened to take on a lower level Upper Rank singlehandedly coupled with extreme stamina and battle strategy.

Second Form: Ferocious Winter- Swinging swords across/in front of the user in an ‘X’ form. This summons icy winds and blizzard like conditions to provide cover and hide from the enemy, either for an opportunity to attack or escape.

Third Form: Divine Light- A violent cascade of lightning strikes to attack a group of low level demons. The lightning can also be absorbed and manipulated through the users weapon, which allows the strike of the beheading to be amplified in power; this can be used to fight upper level demons.

Fourth Form: Earthquake- A head on attack that requires the most force behind it. Every step taken towards the demon opens fissures into the earth that any enemy can and will fall into. Straightforward strike but the user can twist their body to dodge enemy attacks.

Fifth Form: Total Devastation- A quick series of lightning flashes followed by a dry forest fire to help trap demons and enemies. Can not be used during any precipitous weather and has limited range.

Sixth Form: Thunderous Eruption- Used in hand with Earthquake, this form produces magma and lava from the open fissures in the ground, creates a much higher risk scenario to defeat demons but much more effective against upper levels.

Seventh Form: Tidal Waves- A flood of wisteria infused water in the form of a tsunami that allows the user to drown or flood out multiple enemies, or condense it to overpower an upper level demon. This weakens the demons for actual combat.
