I love heists. Something about the intricacy of a plan, the payoff. Hell, I'll even take a long list of cool sounding things. It fills me with satisfaction.

Fastest Growing Fandoms on AO3 This Week (07/15/2024)
Every week I pull data on how many fics are in each fandom and compare to the previous week, then calculate the percentage increase to determine fastest growing fandoms. Since this naturally skews towards smaller fandoms, I have included the same data filtered to Over 1k, 5k, & 10k fics.
Overall:
Over 1,000 Fics:
Over 5,000 Fics:
Over 10,000 Fics:

hear me out: spirealm but make it tron legacy au except it's also sorta canon divergence
everything is pretty much the same except everything is pretty fucking real and not some fever-induced hallucination from getting hit by a car
jiushi's friend did create the game for him and lanzhu was created in the image of the protagonist that jiushi had envisioned during their years in university
i imagine how jiushi gets into the game is still through the hard drive that was sent to him (presumably by his old/ex-friend) and the plot remains unchanged
the ending also stays pretty much the same, but here's where the canon divergence comes in: jiushi doesn't wake up from the accident (because there was no accident!) but is instead pushed out of the game because they've done the whole resetting the game shebang except the game is destroyed instead
jiushi does manage to scrape enough data from the drive to rebuild the game and the ending can go one of two ways: they both decide to stay in the game or, much like in tron legacy, they decide to bring lanzhu out of the game and into the "real" world (which, if you squint hard enough, is also exactly what happens in the novel with the exception it was all thanks to nanzhu's door god powers)
anyways, thank you for coming to my ted talk 😌
(i don't know why it took me so long to merge these two franchises together considering how unhealthily obsessed i was with tron legacy in my childhood)
#i may write this in the future but who knows#i couldnt sleep last night so instead i rewatched tron legacy#safe to say i am still sorta obsessed with that movie#the spirealm#ling jiushi#ruan lanzhu#kaleidoscope of death#死亡万花筒#kod#lin qiushi#ruan nanzhu

everyday I try to piece the puzzle together and the image on it looks different every time, but right now I can't stop thinking about zane (the filmmaker) appearing for the first time in the awe dlc dressed like/looking exactly like alan, and how the aspect of movies and filmmaking and stuff only became a Thing after the loop in american nightmare (where alan beat scratch with alice's film)
obviously this isn't a straight answer, but atm most of my chips are on the "zane (the filmmaker) is in part alan's creation, originally" theory ngl...
#Oh thomas zane you beautiful and terrible kaleidoscope of a mystery you.....#alan wake#alan wake 2#tani's personal shit#there is some evidence of tom the poet the movie being a thing before alan was trapped though which might disprove this but hey#we're all making sandcastles here am I right

Another miniseries review!
Kaleidoscope is a limited series based on a gimmick: a heist story through several episodes, told in a random order. Now the question is: does that gimmick work?
Hm.
Giancarlo Esposito plays Leo Pap, a criminal with a feud against Roger Salas, the CEO of a corporate security company because of their personal history. Leo decides to rob Salas’s state-of-the-art vault in New York City, pulling together a crew of crooks to pull it off. Of course, no heist goes exactly according to plan, and a couple of episodes are dedicated to the aftermath of the heist. It gets messy.
This series was advertised as being in completely random order for whoever watched it. I don’t know if that’s still the case, because the order I watched it in happens to be the order of episodes listed on Wikipedia. Maybe it’s not random now, but was when it came out? I don’t know.
The order I watched in was mostly helpful; the first episode I watched wasn’t the one that took place first chronologically (it took place months before the heist), but it showed Leo getting his crew together, and briefed them on the basics of the job, so I knew who was who for the most part, even if I didn’t understand why Leo had a bone to pick with Salas.
One of the major problems with the series is that some of the problems that actually come up in the heist are foreseeable. As in, “Wow, you trust that guy on your crew? He’s an idiot.” Or, “These two people don’t get along at all! Maybe that feud will be relevant in a high stakes robbery?” The result is that it feels less like, “Master criminals doing a master plan,” and more like, “Several lucky douchebag crooks stumble around.”
Speaking of the cast: who am I rooting for, here? I understand that in stories like this, there are shades of gray, and you’re not supposed to find anyone entirely sympathetic in every aspect. That being said, many of the characters make absolutely boneheaded decisions that make you wonder if you’re supposed to like them at all, and the ones that you might maybe sympathize with end the story in a way that’s not tragic as much as just terrible. At the end of the day, you see who comes out on top, and it’s no one you have much reason to actually care for or identify with. So not only is it that you don’t really sympathize with too many of the characters, you get through the series feeling like it’s all a kick in the gut.
Which makes the entire thing feel more than a tad unsatisfying. You get the final piece of the puzzle and say, “Wait, that’s what happens?” It’s complete, sure, but it’s not rewarding.
I like the idea of the series, to be sure, and there is some fun in watching it the way I did, diving in and trying to figure out how it all comes together. That being said, having finished it, I couldn’t help but feel as if the story couldn’t achieve a satisfying ending. It didn’t work for me when all the parts came together, even though I kind of enjoyed the journey to get there. So while I think if you like the idea of the gimmick, then you can try it out, just be aware that in all, the story isn’t as fun as other heist stories out there.

silvia reads more Kaleidoscope of Death
Lin Qiushi just brusquely spat in Jiang Yingrui’s direction, and held up a middle finger.
...Angered, Jiang Yingrui began to laugh. “Don’t think I won’t hit a girl—”
Just as he got up off the ground, Ruan Nanzhu, who’d heard the noises, arrived. Lin Qiushi immediately threw himself into Ruan Nanzhu’s arms with an ill-treated expression.
Ruan Nanzhu, “what the fuck did you do to my Qiuqiu?!”
Jiang Yingrui, “…” I’m the one who got kicked, why are you acting the victim?!
At this moment, faced with an utterly stunned Jiang Yingrui, Lin Qiushi finally understood the high Ruan Nanzhu got from acting. He who had struck first became an innocent little kitten, trembling in Ruan Nanzhu’s arms. Additional sniffling would, of course, be even better, but as things were, Lin Qiushi was still new to the acting business, and wasn’t yet practiced enough to cry at the drop of a hat.
What he’d done was already enough though.
Feng Yongle was furious: “You animal, what the hell did you do to Qiuqiu!”
Jiang Yingrui’s back was still aching, and immediately after picking himself up he was faced with Feng Yongle’s angry interrogation; he was barely smiling: “What did I do? She’s the one who hit me first—”
“How could she have hit you first!” Feng Yongle clearly didn’t believe Jiang Yingrui at all. Brows deeply furrowed, he glared at Jiang Yingrui like Jiang Yingrui was a despicable opportunist. “Look at her, does she seem like someone who hits first to you?!”
Jiang Yingrui eyed Lin Qiushi, who was cowering like a bunny, and sank into silence.
Indeed she didn’t, but whether or not she did didn’t change the fact that he really had been socked six ways to Sunday by the girl in front of him.
...Lin Qiushi was still lightly shaking. Watching from the side, Feng Yongle thought she was scared. But only Ruan Nanzhu, who was holding Lin Qiushi, knew that he was holding back laughter.
“Alright, it’s alright now,” Feng Yongle said. “Qiuqiu, don’t be frightened.
That man’s gone now.”
Lin Qiushi nodded, to say he’s got it.
Seeing the red rimming Lin Qiushi’s eyes, Feng Yongle soothed, “don’t be frightened, we’ll protect you. Let’s not leave her alone next time, if we hadn’t gotten back in time, and something had happened…”
Ruan Nanzhu thought, yeah, if he’d beaten the guy to death on the spot, there would be trouble indeed. But he still agreed out loud with Feng Yongle, and said it was his bad for not thinking it through.

There is something to be said about inflation in heist movies. Ocean's Eleven was about 160 Million Dollars for 11 people and it was portrayed as an absurdly huge sum. The whole point of the heist was that it involved 3 casinos instead of 1.
Kaleidoscope is about 7 Billion Dollars. That's just a fantasy number. Also Kaleidoscope has a pretty good idea, but sadly forgot to write good dialogue or edit in an engaging way. It's a slog and I'm only one episode in. Staying with it because I respect what it's trying to do.
