Chapter 1/5:
"I've gathered you all here because there will be a new shinobi joining your ranks..." The Third Hokage paused his address to the highest ranking village ninjas and glanced over to the woman standing beside him. Her face looked solemn but sure.
"Y/N is a refugee from the Village Hidden in the Wind and will be taking over one of the graduate genin teams as their sensei. I'm sure you will all make her feel welcome in our village's customary ways."
"But Lord Hokage!" Gai made his way through to the front of the small crowd. "I don't mean to challenge your decision, Lord Hokage, but how are we to accept this stranger as a shinobi, and a jōnin level one at that! Surely her skills must be put to the test beforehand!" A whisper of approval among the crowd followed Gai's words.
The Hokage turned to look at Y/N with a raised brow.
"I will do what is required of me." She nodded in return.
"Then it has been settled!" The Hokage turned back to the crowd. "Y/N will showcase her talents as a shinobi in a friendly fight. And I'm sure you won't mind being her opponent Gai, since you spoke so fervently on the matter." There was a note of playfulness in his voice.
"Yes of course, Lord Hokage! Maito Gai never backs down from a challenge!" The bushy browed sensei gave his usual flamboyant pose and a thumbs-up, not forgetting to throw a glance at his rival Kakashi, who stood towards the back of the crowd. For once Kakashi had put his book down, as he studied the new shinobi's face. It wasn't quite that he knew her from somewhere, rather, he knew that look in her eyes...
The crowd parted to make room for a make-shift arena for the match. Y/N and Gai stood in the centre, facing each other. There was a small smile playing on her lips as she watched Gai flash his stance.
"Forgive me if I don't go easy on you, newcomer!"
"I didn't ask you to."
"Confidence! I respect that in an opponent! Now let's see what you've got!"
In a flash Gai was behind her with a kick to the head, but despite his impeccable speed and technique, Y/N seemed to block it with ease. He followed up with a fury of punches and kicks, but none of them seem to land. It was like she could sense him coming from each direction. As Gai tried to land another powerful kick, Y/N successfully dodged and tried to return the favour. Gai easily evaded her attack and jumped some distance away from her.
"You're fast, I'll give you that. But you've gone in too cocky." Y/N smirked, an evident smile creasing her face for the first time that day.
"It's time we ended this fight. Wind style, syphon jutsu!" A gust of wind rolled around Gai and pulled him towards Y/N like a torpedo. Before he could release himself, he was met with a powerful kick that sent him flying towards the end of the fighting area, cracking the ground beneath him with his fall.
"Well, I believe that's sufficient proof, wouldn't you say?" The Hokage pronounced from the podium. "Let's call it a day before someone gets a concussion!" As the Hokage and his men made to leave, Y/N approached Gai and extended her hand to him with a friendly smile, helping him back to his feet.
"Your skills are indeed formidable! But don't think I'll go down that easy on our next encounter!" He flashed her a toothy grin, which she matched right back.
"Your taijutsu is some of the best I've ever seen. Perhaps you could teach me in a friendlier sparring match next time?"
"I'd be delighted. You should see my student Rock Lee's taijutsu skills as well! He's quite the talent. Of course, Neji Hyuga is also on my team and he's a real prodigy."
"A Hyuga! I believe I might have one of those on my team too... I really must brush up on my knowledge of the village history and the next generation of shinobi..." Y/N brushed the sweat off her brow with a concerned expression on her face. She really had her work cut out for her.
"In that case you should speak to Iruka at the Academy. He's been teaching the last few classes of genin to graduate there, he'll be able to catch you up on things!" Gai gave her a thumbs up. "I will see you around, Y/N-sensei. Welcome to Konoha!"
She bowed in return and made her way towards the exit. Kakashi stood near the door, leaning against the wall with his book in hand. As she walked passed him, he looked up and his lazy eye met hers.
"Your book..."
"Hm?"
"It's upside down."
Flustered, Kakashi looked down, and then back up towards her, but she'd already disappeared. "I've never been worse at my job as a ninja, than in this moment." He thought to himself following the rest of the crowd outside. Perhaps following the new jōnin from afar wasn't the best tactic to employ here. He'd have to get to know her the old-fashioned way.
Next day:
The kids had all just piled out of the classroom when he heard a knock on the door frame.
Iruka looked up to see a female shinobi he'd not met before.
"Is this a good time?" She asked.
"Ahem, yes, what can I do for you?"
"My name is Y/N. I'm a... transfer from another village. I'll be training team 8 from now on. I was told you could help me catch up on the village's history, Iruka-sensei." A soft smile blossomed on her lips as she bowed her head to him.
Flustered by the way she had voiced her request, Iruka blushed and stammered out a response. "Of course, I'd be happy to help! What is it that you want to know?"
"Well, my students' backgrounds for a start, the village clan history, really anything I can get my hands on. I'm keen to do right by these kids."
Her words strung a chord with Iruka. "Yes, we all are. Well, I have some books with me here that you're welcome to borrow, and I have some more things at my flat that might be useful. I could bring them tomorrow... or if you'd like to join me, I have some spare time this afternoon, I can take you through them myself?" Iruka was bright red by this point, it had taken all the courage he had left that day to suggest it.
"That would be awfully generous of you, if you're sure I won't be imposing!"
"Not at all! I'll just finish collecting my things and we can head out!"
They walked back towards his place, Iruka filling their silence with stories of his students, often sending Y/N into fits of laughter. It was nice being in Iruka's presence, warm, light. Iruka, in the middle of a story, turned to her, gesticulating wildly for added affect, when he bumped shoulders with someone.
"Hey! Oh... Kakashi... sorry, I wasn't looking."
The grey-haired ninja stood in casual clothing with a grocery bag in his arm and an unreadable expression on his masked face. He nodded to Iruka without even looking at him, his lazy eye resting on Y/N instead.
"You two look like you're getting along."
Iruka blushed, but Y/N's face remained unchanged. She made a mental note of his name. Kakashi. There was something about him that made her feel uneasy. Like he could see right through her.
"Day off?" She casually asked.
"Not quite. I've been assigned a solo mission and just had some time to prepare for it."
"Well good luck on it." Iruka threw in. "We better get on, Y/N, it'll take me some time to dig everything up for you."
"Right." She bowed to Kakashi and followed Iruka, already a few steps ahead, eager to lose the notorious jōnin. She couldn't help but throw a glance back at Kakashi, just to see his back lazily swaying as the distance between them grew. Something in her ached at the sight.
A few days later:
Another sleepless night. It wasn't that her new bed, in her new room, part of her new life, was uncomfortable. It was rather that things were too comfortable. She couldn't remember the last time she could sleep peacefully without fear for her life before coming to Konoha. The Hokage had been kind enough to give her time to settle in, so she hadn't been sent on any missions yet; still, her body jolted awake at night, her mind unable to tell reality from the demons that haunted her sleep.
Tonight was even worse, Y/N hadn't been able to sleep a wink, aware of every slight noise, the room stuffy, her body hot. In a moment of desperation, she'd jumped out of bed, grabbed a scarf and walked out in the cool night air. She strolled aimlessly, her eyes adjusting to the dimly lit village, her head spinning with thoughts about the past, the training she'd prepared for her newly acquired genin, whom she'd meet soon, but most of all (and she really did try to shoo that particular one away) she thought about the mysterious grey-haired ninja, whose single visible eye had bored into her soul.
As if answering her muddled thoughts, a sudden rustling caught her attention. A shadow jumped out of one of the nearby trees, landing onto the ground, stumbled, hand clutching side, but noticing he wasn't alone, tried to regain composure. The figure walked towards her, slightly strained until he came into sight.
"Kakashi! What are you doing sneaking around at this time of night!"
"I should ask you the same thing. A little late for a stroll, is it not?
His mask and clothes were covered in mud and dust, his whole look quite dishevelled. Noticing Y/N's eyes studying him curiously, he let out a slight chuckle.
"I've just come back from my mission, that's all."
"You're injured." She said plainly.
"It's nothing, really."
"I can smell the blood from here. I think you should go to the hospital..."
"No." He quickly cut her off. Seeing the look of persistence on her face, he realised he wouldn't get out of this one so easily.
"I can't go to the hospital, they'll keep me there for days, and I have... I have things to take care of tomorrow." His whole body sagged in resignation.
"Can I at least have a look?" She said softly.
"If you must, but I warn you, it's not pretty."
Kakashi unzipped his vest and lifted his shirt, showing a nasty, open wound on his left side. It didn't seem too deep, but definitely painful.
"Don't worry, I've seen enough blood in my time." Y/N stepped closer, as the darkness of night didn't allow for clear vision. She didn't fail to notice the strained muscles of his abdomen, or the way his v-line tucked into his trousers, but pulled all her strength into focusing on the wound.
"You won't go to hospital, fine. But will you let me help? If you don't take care of this, you'll wind up with an infection, that'll keep you in hospital longer than a few days."
"What can you do?" Kakashi's voice sounded unsure.
"Do you think you could trust me?"
He stood silent for a moment, studying her face. To his own dismay he nodded.
"Then follow me."
They walked together slowly, Kakashi tiredly dragging his feet at times.
"You can lean on me if you need to. I can handle the weight."
"No, I'm quite alright. Just tired."
"You're very stubborn, you know. I'm surprised you're even coming now." He could detect a smile in her voice, the thought of which made him shiver.
"Not as surprised as I am." He swallowed thickly. He hated talking about himself. "What were you doing out at this time anyway?"
"I..." Y/N fell silent for a moment. She still didn't know how to open up to strangers, how much of her past she could reveal without it becoming dangerous. "I find it hard to sleep. If I do manage it, I'm plagued by nightmares, the rest of the time I'm just... on edge. Walking outside seems to help."
Kakashi just nodded in response, hoping it didn't go unnoticed in the darkness that surrounded them. In truth, he wanted to tell her he understood perfectly, and that he couldn't remember the last time he got a good night's sleep. That he felt perpetually exhausted and feared the shadows that his mind conjured at night. Most of all, he wanted to ask if they could keep each other company on their sleepless nights. But it felt much too soon for any of that, so he said nothing.
"We're here." Y/N announced, standing at the door of her building. She pulled out her key and pushed the door open, making way for Kakashi to go in.
"Is this... your flat? Y/N, I hate to tell you this, but I'm really not that kind of girl." Kakashi tried to joke, but something caught in his throat and he coughed, writhing in pain from his wound.
"Very smooth." She scoffed at him. She led him into the kitchen and turned on the light, revealing strings of drying herbs, hanging across her window.
"Sit here." She pointed at a chair and Kakashi silently obeyed, taking in his surroundings. She didn't have much, just enough mugs and plates for the comfort of one, no pictures or personal memorabilia hanging on the walls. So she hadn't brought much with her then.
Meanwhile, Y/N picked a couple of different leaves from her drying racks and started mixing them into a paste, adding liquid from little jars, strewn along the window sill. Finally she walked over with the mixture in hand.
"May I?" She asked, pointing at his wounded side.
Kakashi lifted his shirt once more, and kneeling next to him, she started carefully covering the gash with the sticky green concoction.
The room was filled with a grassy scent. Her hands were cold, which eased the pain of contact with the wound. Kakashi tried his best not to wince, but his body betrayed him by twitching away from her every time she touched him. He wondered whether it was just the pain, or the sensation of being touched by another, that had become so foreign to him outside of combat.
"There, there. Almost done." Her voice was soothing, almost sweet. Kakashi's body instinctively relaxed to the sound of it. They remained like this for a few seconds, him silently watching her movements from above.
"You know, you should take it easy on Iruka. I think he has a crush on you." He spoke quietly, testing the waters.
Y/N cocked a brow, but refrained from looking up, worried that her flushed cheeks would betray her.
"I think that's a stretch, he was just being helpful, that's all." She tried to keep her voice nonchalant.
Kakashi just hummed in response, unsure if he'd managed to find what he was looking for.
"Right, you can put your shirt back down. This should speed up the healing, and subdue the pain. It'll harden and act as a protector for the wound. Just wash it off in a couple of days." She got up, heading towards the sink to wash up.
"How did you know to do this?" He asked, standing up to test how it felt when he moved.
"There was a woman in my village." Y/N spoke with her back still turned to him, eyes focused on washing the mixing dish. "People were afraid of her, thought her a witch. But she was kind to me when not many others were." She placed the dish on the drying rack and turned back to look at him. There was a sadness in her eyes, that didn't evade Kakashi's notice. "She shared some of her knowledge of herbs with me. Insisted it could save my life some day."
They stood silently, staring at each other. It seemed they had both suddenly realised that they were alone in her flat, and weren't sure what to do with that knowledge.
"I should probably go." Kakashi was the first to break their silence.
"Yes. Probably should."
"I'll see you around. And Y/N... thank you."
Without waiting for a response, Kakashi turned towards the door, and left somewhat hurriedly, his heart in his throat. Y/N remained in her place for a minute longer, staring at the space he'd just occupied. How right it had felt to have him here, in her kitchen. How afraid she was of that thought.

The Big Bad Wolf
Part II
Word count: 2,018
Warnings: none
Notes: I'm literally like 6 parts further in my head and cannot wait to share it all.
You sluggishly opened your eyes to your alarm Monday morning. You stared blurrily up at the ceiling, willing your eyes to stay open for a few minutes before your mind woke up with you. When it did, the anxiety that you had compartmentalized and tucked away for the week all came flooding back.
You groaned aloud, wondering again why you chose to do this. You flung an arm over your eyes and huffed. As if summoned by your woes, your son appeared in your bedroom doorway. Tiredly, you smiled at his wild bed head and sleepy eyes.
“Good morning, Sweetie,” you cooed.
You finally sat up, and he toddled over to you. He held his hands up and you picked him up so he could sit in your lap. He let out a little yawn and pressed the side of his face to your chest. You attempted to flatten his hair, but he pushed your hand away.
You pressed a kiss to the top of his head and stood up, placing him on your hip in the process. You went over to your dresser and opened your shirt drawer. Lord Sixth had told you to, ‘wear what you normally wear,’ when you asked about uniforms. You stared at your options, and wondered what would be appropriate.
Your son wiggled down to the ground and decided he woud help you in your search by pulling out whatever he could get his hands on and throwing it to the floor. You pinched the bridge of your nose.
“No more baby, look,” you picked one of the shirts at random and replaced your nightclothes with it. “All done, can you help me pick up this mess?”
You pointed to the clothes. He nodded, and you helped him shove them back in the drawer. You threw on a pair of pants before he could continue 'helping' you. “Alright, let’s go make breakfast,”
An hour later, you had dropped him off at daycare and were headed to meet Kakashi in front of the Hokage’s tower. You rounded a corner onto the main street, and were surprised to find him already standing there waiting for you. You broke into a light jog and waved when he noticed you.
He held out a peace sign and smiled at you lazily when you stopped in front of him. “Yo,”
“Morning, sir,”
“Shall we?” He gestured vaguely.
He didn’t wait for your answer and started walking. You fell in step beside him, and the two of you walked silently for a good ten minutes before you reached a spot at the edge of the forest that he seemed to like. You scanned the tree line, and it took a moment to recognize the entrance of the trail he had been looking for.
It was overgrown with lack of use, though that didn’t surprise you. Your anxiety flared in your chest when he stepped up to it, gesturing for you to follow him. He waited patiently while you found the courage to pick up your suddenly heavy feet and place them one in front of the other.
“It widens after the first few feet. I let it stay overgrown so people are less likely to stumble upon it,”
You nodded absently. He said nothing else as he started in, kindly holding branches out of the way so they wouldn’t smack you in the face. “It will be difficult to keep covered when I’m using the path every day,”
He turned and smiled at you. “It’s a good thing I have a friend who can take care of that,”
The path unexpectedly opened up to about three feet across. You silently appreciated the change, and took in your surroundings as Kakashi guided you. Morning sunlight filtered down through the thick branches and leaves and birds twittered from their nests. The forest was noisy with life, and you smiled a bit to yourself. You had imagined some sort of silent, foreboding walk under downcast skies on the walk over.
A few minutes later, you and Kakashi stepped into a clearing. A cottage sat in the center, white with dark brown accents, and a stone chimney and a stone pathway leading to the front door. There were flower beds in front, but most was dying off with the change of season. You were taken aback by how charming it was. You would have never guessed a genocidal maniac lived here.
Unconsciously, you started stepping forward, but ended up smacking an invisible barrier face first. Electricity zapped through you, causing you to jolt and stumble backwards into Kakashi.
“Ow!”
He was doing a poor job at stifling a loud laugh and helped you regain your footing with one hand over his masked mouth.
"Here, let me,"
He stepped forward and placed his hand against the barrier. The warding symbols appeared around where he touched. He pulled away and made several hand signs in quick succession, touched it with his fingertip, and seemingly traced a few words along it.
"Now, infuse your palm with chakra and place it on the barrier,"
You followed his instructions, and this time, touching it didn't electrocute you. Your chakra seeped into the barrier as it hummed benignly against your hand. It swirled out like ink on water along the wall, and you watched its beautiful dance in wonder.
Your chakra continued to flow out in beautiful waves until the connection muted, and you reluctantly pulled your hand away. Kakashi nodded to you when you finally turned your attention back to him.
“Ready?”
He didn’t wait for a response. He started forward with long strides, and you had to hurry forward. A thought crossed your mind while you nearly jogged to stay on his heels: Perhaps he thought you would be less likely to back out if you didn’t have the time to think about it?
He would be correct.
He knocked three times against the thick wooden door. He waited only to the count of four before opening it himself. He held it open for you to step through, and you made a mental note that it had been left unlocked.
You were hesitant to step over the threshold. Kakashi sent you a smile that you were sure was meant to be comforting, but it only served to amplify your nervousness. He motioned for you to follow and stepped back a little further. You inhaled deeply through your nose, and took a hesitant step.
Kakashi pulled the door closed the moment both of your feet were inside. He strode to the other side of the room and to the left, where a small kitchen resided. The floor plan was open; the room noticeably bare.
You were slow to follow; taking in your surroundings as much as you could. There was a sofa with a side table in the middle of the main area, and to the right was a fireplace with a sizable, empty mantle, with a half-filled bookcase next to it. On the far wall, across from the front door, was a shabby rectangular table with two chairs under a window.
The wooden floors creaked off and on while you made your way around. Between the kitchen and front door there was a dark hallway with a few closed doors, the aura of which made you scurry forward to the kitchen.
Kakashi watched you bemusedly from the corner of his eye, although his whole body tensed in apprehension for his friend to come out of his room. He fully turned to you when you said his name in a low tone.
“Are you expecting me to seal these floors and decorate the place too?” Your tone was teasing, but he could see the same apprehension he felt in your eyes.
There was an unmistakable sound of a door opening from the hallway, and you about jumped out of your skin. You nearly leapt behind Kakashi, placing yourself at his side and a step back, closer to the kitchen counter.
Your heart pounded in your chest as you listened to heavy footsteps slowly approach. It seemed like an eternity for the man of the hour to finally round the corner. And when he was finally in full view, you were shocked.
He was… gaunt. He had a sickly pallor, sunken cheeks, overgrown black hair matted to hell, and deep, dark circles under his eyes. There were circular scars maring one side of his face, which you had heard about in the stories, but looking at him now, you wouldn’t have guessed for a moment that he helped bring the shinobi world to its knees.
He was frozen in his spot, mouth slack and wide eyes drinking you in. The intensity of his eyes on you made you shiver involuntarily. You both just stared at each other. You felt a mix of sinking disappointment and relief. You had imagined a malicious man straight out of a story - the same one the shinobi who had survived the battlefield described, with horns and flaming red eyes, but this man was.. just that, a man. And it was no wonder Kakashi had hired help.
Kakashi cleared his throat, startling you both from your trances. The man’s eyes darted to him, then back to you, then again to Kakashi. A range of emotions flashed across his face.
“Obito, this is Y/n L/n.” He gestured to you. “Y/n, this is Obito Uchiha,”
“Why-” Obito’s voice rasped with disuse.
“She’s here to help take care of you and the house,”
Obito crossed his arms in front of his chest and scoffed. “I don’t need help,”
“Yes, you do,”
“No, I don’t,”
“Yes,”
“No,”
“Yes,”
“No,”
You looked between the two exsperatedly. Your mouth opened before you could stop yourself. “Considering your state, I have to disagree,”
He stiffened immediately at your voice, and chose not to look at you. A hand came up to the back of his neck, a grimace twisting his face at the feeling of ratty hair.
He seemed almost surprised for a moment, as if he hadn’t been aware of himself for a while and had no idea that he was so disheveled. You actually considered it highly likely.
You peered at him, and he shrunk back from your gaze. His face was the epitome of discomfort, his eyes begging Kakashi for help.
Kakashi minutely shook his head. The three of you stood in a tense silence, your eyes downcast. When you couldn’t stand it anymore, you looked to Kakashi.
He had the sense to look apologetic. He wracked his brain for something to say, and stopped on one of the reasons you were here in the first place.
“So, how about breakfast?”
You nodded slowly, and followed him to the cabinets where he began pointing out where everything was. When he was finished, you grabbed a carton of eggs and got to work.
Obito hadn’t moved from his spot, instead opting to observe. He found it strange when Kakashi placed a hand on your shoulder, but reminded himself that this was not the same standoff-ish boy he had known in his youth. He had deprived his own self of knowing how he interacted with those close to him.
Kakashi turned to Obito, who wore a disgruntled expression. He walked close to him, and lowered his voice. “I’m sorry I had to spring this on you,”
He grunted.
“I can’t bear to see you waste away like this,” His eyes were somber, and Obito’s shoulders fell defeatedly.
“She’s a good person, you’ll come around to it,”
He glanced away and then back at him. He reluctantly nodded, to which Kakashi smiled softly.
“You should probably shower, though. You’re not impressing any ladies like that,” He nudged Obito’s arm with his elbow.
Obito opened and closed his mouth like a fish before deciding on, “Bakashi!”
Kakashi chuckled and watched as Obito disappeared through the bathroom door. He turned his attention to you, and cleared his throat.
You glanced over your shoulder, but continued your task. “I’ll be taking my leave. Report back to me how it goes either tonight or before you head here tomorrow morning,”
You gave him a small smile. “Will do, have a good day,”
“You too,”

pick your battles
kakashi x gn reader, 700 words, sfw but mdni
in which kakashi makes the mistake of bringing a cute bento to training
contents: 100% fluff, cooking as a love language, initially reader is assumed to be female but a gender is never actually specified
notes: this is a test run for a forced proximity slowburn i’m working on. feedback is always appreciated 🥰
Kakashi should’ve known better than to bring the dumplings with him to training. Usually he can get away with having lunch, picking moments when his students are distracted to eat his meal. Not today, though. This time three pairs of eyes are glued to him the moment he takes the lid off his bento.
Naruto leans over his shoulder, staring openly. “Whatcha got there, sensei?”
“Dumplings, of course,” Sakura says, rolling her eyes. “I know you’re a ramen freak but there are other kinds of food in the world.”
She picks up her chopsticks, pretending to be interested in her own meal, but he can see how curious she is. Kakashi frowns as he eyes the lunch she’s packed for herself; it isn’t nearly enough food to get her through training.
“I know what dumplings are!” Naruto snaps back at Sakura. “I wanted to know what kind they are.”
Seeing an opportunity, Kakashi turns away to uncover his face while they bicker. He’s got just enough time to shove two dumplings into his mouth before he has to pull his mask back up.
“They’re homemade,” Sasuke notes. He’s been quiet up to now, content to eat his own lunch and watch the other two fight it out.
“They are,” Kakashi confirms through a mouthful of food, nodding. “And Naruto I doubt you would like them. They’re vegetable.”
“Lame.” Naruto flops down onto the grass, his attention shifting to the fluffy white clouds overhead. “You didn’t even make any meat ones?”
“There’s no way Kakashi-sensei made them,” Sakura says, suspicious.
He knows he shouldn’t respond, but Kakashi can’t help himself. After all, he did make some of them, and he’s quite proud of that.
“Oh?” he asks, his tone as mild as always. “And what makes you say that, Sakura?”
“They’re way too cute. Look at the little ruffles along the edges.”
“I can make cute things. Maybe I felt like changing things up for once.”
“There’s a note on the lid of the bento,” Sasuke says, not even looking up.
Kakashi’s heart nearly stops in his chest. You’d left him a note? No, he would’ve seen one right? Sasuke must be bluffing. From his position on the ground, Naruto leans over to swipe the lid off of the stone step where Kakashi had placed it. He does his best not to react, even as Naruto flips the lid over to check the underside.
“What are you talking about, Sasuke? There’s nothing here.”
Sasuke takes a bite of rice. “No, of course there isn’t. But look at Kakashi-sensei.”
For the second time that afternoon, three pairs of curious eyes turn towards Kakashi. He tries to school his expression, a feat which is usually easy enough with a mask on, but he can feel the treacherous flush creeping up his cheeks.
Sitting up and crossing his legs, Naruto places the lid back on the step. “Sensei, why’s your face getting all red?”
“Oh look! He’s blushing!” Sakura squeals, bringing her hands up to her cheeks. “Sensei must have a girlfriend.”
Sasuke wipes his mouth on his sleeve, aloof as ever. “Took you long enough.”
Immediately Naruto and Sakura launch into a barrage of questions.
“Is she pretty?”
“Do we know her?”
“How long have you guys been dating?”
“Wait, is she living with you?”
“Does that mean it’s serious?”
“Alright, that’s enough.” Kakashi raises a gloved hand, cutting them off. “You’re making a lot of assumptions based on a couple of dumplings.”
“Yeah, I guess you’re right,” Naruto says, nodding, and for a single, blissful moment, Kakashi thinks he’s won. But then Naruto adds: “He could have a boyfriend.” and Kakashi decides it’s time to end this conversation.
“As glad as I am that you have an open mind, that isn’t the kind of assumption I was referring to. I don’t have a girlfriend.”
Naruto opens his mouth, but his teacher is having none of it.
“Or a boyfriend. Or any sort of partner. And even if I did, it’s none of your business.”
Sakura looks like she has more to say on the subject, but just then her stomach growls and Kakashi pushes the bento towards her.
“You three, have the rest of these. None of you packed enough to eat today. I’ll be back in a bit, I have an errand to run.”
As he makes his escape, disappearing in a puff of smoke, Kakashi wonders if he’s just adding fuel to the fire. Probably, though at least this way he knows Sakura and Sasuke will eat something. And he’s sure Naruto will too, once he figures out that Kakashi lied about the vegetables.

Bells and Black Feathers
Itachi x f!reader
Slowburn. Itachi. OG Naruto setting. I really wanted my first Itachi fanfic to be longer since I’ve never written for him before and I usually only do quick stories. Please enjoy. Also, I apologize for the trauma and angst. But if this receives good feedback, I may make this in to a series 🫢
Bells. Bells were known in our clan as the harbingers of incoming change. We used them during clan ceremonies. Weddings, funerals, even birthdays. I was so sick of hearing bells. It was as if the drone of a metal ball racking around a hollow shell followed me wherever I went, even in to the village. Even worse, our clans genjutsu was hearing based, and you guessed it, we used bells. I almost thought I was crazy when I heard the telltale jingle faintly from beside me. I couldn’t help but check my pockets frantically to make sure mine were properly put away to not send anyone near by in to an accidental genjutsu. It was as if I’d gone crazy, hearing the chirp of a tiny bell pass beside me once again as I bump in to it,” my apologies.”
Bells don’t talk, and they definitely don’t have handsome features like the dark orbs that barely even spare a glance my way as they help me up from the beaten path on my way to the gates.
“No, I wasn’t looking. It’s my bad, your bell made me think I was about to endanger everyone here.” I ramble on, completely awestruck at the cloaked man in front of me. Looking down, I can only hold my gasp at the sight of the all knowing red clouds. As a Jonin, we’re trained to watch for and decipher these cloaks to pinpoint the Akatsuki. But why would they be rash enough to lurk on the edge of the village out in the country?
“Nonsense, I believe we both had our eyes on something that distracted us. As it is, I must be on my way.” He replies, not letting even one emotion bubble to the surface as his face stays as still as stone.
“Hey, what’s your name?” I ask, knowing it didn’t matter, he was a threat regardless. But the longer I could keep him here, the quicker I could subdue him.
“I believe that’s best saved for our next encounter. Farewell.” He’s already disappeared as his last word rings through my ears. It takes a second to shake the eerie feeling creeping up my back, but once composure is regained, I’m already breaking in to a dead sprint.
“Asuma! Hey! Asuma, damnit where are you?” I’m calling out to him before even hitting our usual meeting spot for missions, only to be answered with the wind. The only other shinobi with worse timing than Asuma was the only one to show up, lazily sauntering to our spot,” yell any louder and he might just hear you on the other side of the village, Y/N.”
“Listen, we’re being watched. What I’m about to tell you… you have to believe me.” I begin, gripping his shoulder so I can lean in and whisper,” the Akatsuki, they’re in the village.”
“Okay, I know we’re both well versed in pranking but this is a new level. Even for you.” Kakashi sighs, yanking at his ear lobe in mock pain. No, not mock pain… it was the signal that someone was possibly listening to our conversation. I had almost forgotten about it since we never had to resort to it, not for years anyways. It was a trick we would use in our younger years to signal when Asuma or Guy would attempt to listen to our private gossip sessions.
“Anyways, if you’re done fooling around, I’m going to find where Asuma has wandered off to., you stay here just in case Guy shows up early.” He sighs, the only signal that shows he knows exactly where they’re at is his eyes darting to the right in the direction of the river.
“Guy can figure out where we are, I’m coming with you.” I mutter, kicking at the dirt road and tailing directly on his heels. Kakashi spares a glance back, pointing to his eye and shaking his head no before covering it with his hand. I’m assuming it means don’t look, but my eyes wander anyways. I was good at taking in the scenery and doing the opposite of what I was told since I had the means to get myself out of trouble. What I wasn’t expecting to see was Asuma and Kurenai working as a team, yet still struggling against the man who had bumped in to me earlier and a new companion. Kurenai was in the river, looking winded as Kakashi, steps in front of me to block my vision, reaching down to grip my vest,” go find Guy. That’s an order.”
Kakashi stares unyieldingly until I relent, sprinting to the village.
I heave deeply, resting against the side of a vendors stand when I see the familiar and vibrant neon orange leg warmers parading in the air as Guy walks on his hands.
“H-hey! Guy! Come take a stroll with me real quick.” I huff out as quickly as I can between breaths, snapping one of his leg warmers to get his attention.
“Y/N! I was just on my way to the gates to meet up with the team, what’s the hurry all of a sudden? Finally accepting my offer of a romantic stroll? This mission can wait for the sake of love if it must!” Guy sputters out, clambering back to the way a normal human stands. I can’t help but roll my eyes,” sure, yeah. Let’s move it. We got places to be Guy.”
He follows against my tight grip as I lead him to the river, quickly losing my patience as he mutters on.
We finally reach the area once again, seeing not much has happened other than Kakashi looked to be wounded… internally? Maybe winded?
“The river? The perfect place for- Kakashi! No one messes with my rival except me!” Guy gasps out, quickly disappearing from my side. He lands between the two sides, splashing the water as everyone stays at a standstill. After a brief moment of communication, the two Akatsuki vanish, leaving the others to tend to Kakashi. I run across the water, quickly reaching for Kakashi with my medical abilities only to be stopped by Asuma,” he needs to go to the hospital, don’t even waste your chakra. Notify… someone.”
“Who, Asuma? There’s no time to waste, if I’m not needed here, I’m going after them!” I shout, already taking off for the treeline.
“Y/N, get back to the village. You’ll be in worse trouble if you pursue them.” Guy calls out, quickly catching up. I can’t help but laugh,” with what hokage, Guy? We have the chance to take them out now. So let’s move it! There’s not currently a hokage to give us orders and I’m not going to sit around and wait.”
“Y/N, stop. You aren’t even thinking. His genjutsu is unbreakable.” Guy shouts, finally outrunning me to stop me in my tracks. I bluff my defeat, silently reaching for the bells at my side,” I’m sorry, Guy. I can’t let them get away.”
The bells twirl delicately around the metal rod they were strung to carefully by a clan elder the day I was born, twisting around to create a melodious genjutsu even Guy was too slow to release from. Normally, he had warning and could break it in time. But the look of betrayal as he’s frozen in to place, sends a pang through my chest,” I’ll show you the life you wish to have.”
Having to state my intentions of a genjutsu was a downfall, and I cringe at the thought of Guy’s ideal life. But I can only move forward to give myself enough distance with the bells, as once I’m out of earshot, the genjutsu may be broken within moments.
After what felt like miles, I drop the bells back down, taking a brief second to slow down and catch my breath. The sky unrelentingly fades to grey as thunder rolls in,” because why wouldn’t it rain?”
I curse to myself, knowing the seconds before rain were precious in the effort to find any sign of tracks. I drop down to a single footprint that stops in the middle of a clearing, looking around frantically to find another. As my head whips back to the tree I was just in, a bell sounds just beside my ear. Ice fills my veins as I freeze in a slight terror.
“You’re alone.” The man from earlier breathes out. I force myself to focus my eyes to the ground and keep my cool,” yes.”
“That wasn’t a question but thanks for the clarification. You aren’t here to subdue me, you’re here for answers.” He continues, trailing a finger across my back as he circles around me, examining me almost before he continues,” you don’t know who I am, do you?”
“I don’t exactly keep my bingo book on me all the time, I just know you’re Akatsuki. It’s my job to train Genin now, not chase after criminals all the time.” I huff, refusing to look up as his finger prods at my jaw in an attempt to lift my gaze,” I’m not falling for your genjutsu.”
Regretfully, I still look up due to the persistent tug at my jaw, being met with the wondering dark orbs that I’d witnessed earlier.
“If I wanted to place you under a genjutsu, I would’ve done so by now, Y/N.” He drops his hand, revealing the slightest smirk on his face. I confusingly take in his features as I try to figure out why they were so familiar before i land on the mutilated leaf headband that rested against his forehead, sweeping back his raven hair.
“How do you know my name?” I mutter, reaching for the silver block on his headband to run my fingers along the slashed leaf in the middle. His hand is quick to grip mine,” you truly don’t remember do you?”
“Unfortunately, no.” I sigh, regretting that I was fully enamored with the handsome criminal in front of me.
“We were Genin together. Itachi Uchiha.” He says coldly. The realization on how long it took myself to puzzle the pieces together hits like a ton of bricks. But I have no recollection of ever being in the same class, let alone knowing him.
I can only shake my head in response.
“If you can’t remember, let me show you.” Itachi sighs defeatedly, looking directly in to my eyes as his own bleed in to the notorious red sharingan. I prepare myself for a genjutsu, seeing as I find myself back in the classroom sitting at my desk. The day in question is hazy, but I still remember the doodle I was drawing. I also remember the pain I’m about to experience. As if on cue, my broken pencil I was trying so hard to continue to write with, slices my palm. I can’t control any movements, it’s a memory that can’t be altered. My tiny hand recoils in pain as younger me whimpers,” ah, dang it! I can’t bleed on this dress, my mom just got it for me.”
“Allow me.” The young boy beside me bubbles with a rising smile, quickly pulling a bandage roll from the backpack beside him,” my brother can be clumsy so I tend to carry extras just in case.”
“You callin’ me clumsy?” Young me accuses him sharply. I was always ‘abrasive’ as my sensei Shikaku regularly stated during our outings with Choza and Inoichi’s teams.
“Not at all, do you always assume the worst so quickly?” The young version of Itachi questions back. My memory jogs and I can feel my current self mouth the same words I’m about to relive,” I can assume we’re going to be good friends if you’re brave enough to call me out on my crap.”
The scene fades to darkness, sitting at the end of the dock in the Uchiha compound with our feet dangling off the edge.
“Do it again!” A slightly older me shrieks in a fit of laughter as Itachi stands once again, sending a fire ball across the pond.
“The simplest things surely entertain you. It’s amazing.” He chuckles, sitting back down as my body falls against the dock to look at the stars,” you amaze me, honestly.”
I can still feel the heat against my cheeks at the confession I had made long ago.
“Y/N?” He asks quietly.
“Yeah?” I question back.
“Even though we’re still young, do you ever get the feeling we’ll be together forever?” He questions sheepishly.
“We’ll always be friends, that’s not even a question. Don’t be so weird.” I laugh, reaching up to punch his shoulder.
“What if we’re destined to be more than friends?” Itachi continues with his questions, looking over to catch my pondering face,”… we’re still young. If it happens, it happens. We have plenty of years left to stay just how we are. Like you always say, it’s better to wait than spend the rest of your life regretting a rash decision.”
It flickers again, this time it’s my mother, uncontrollably sobbing at the kitchen table that woke me from a dead sleep due to the excitement of finally becoming a chunin,” mom, are you okay?”
I try to rub away the tiredness from my eyes as she shakes her head,” go back to bed, Y/N. It’s nothing you would understand at your age.”
“Try me.” Twelve year old me crosses her arms as I watch my mothers sadness turn to anger,” you think because you’re a chunin now you can handle a tragedy in your own village? Well it’s time to grow up, kid. There was a massacre on the Uchiha compound. The whole clan is dead. Thanks to your little boyfriend, that Itachi kid. Stop putting your trust in others. Start becoming that ‘perfect’ shinobi you boast that you are Y/N. It won’t save our village, it won’t get those people their lives back. You will do so little, it won’t even matter by the time you’re my age, or even your death.”
She burst in to tears once again. Younger me couldn’t be upset at her, she was already upset with herself for having to end her career so early and our father leaving. I let her take that anger out on me, as long as it was never directed towards my sister and she never had to see it.
“W-what’s wrong, Y/N?” I feel the small tug at my pajamas as my little sister clings tightly against my leg. I can only put a smile on my face as I lift her small frame,” moms sad because we aren’t getting the sleep we need, how about I tuck you back in to bed?”
I still feel the pain in my eye sockets from crying throughout the rest of that night. Betrayal from my own mother and someone else I thought I’d loved.
The genjutsu fades once again, unknown scenery flourishes around me. I look down to see I now bear the Akatsuki robe. I look forward to the faceless crowd that slowly comes in to focus, fingers pointing as they all unanimously mumble the word,” traitor.”
It becomes louder as the people begin encircling me, cornering me off like an injured animal on display. Several faces become distinct, my mother, my sister, Shikaku sensei and his friends, even the hokage that had just given his life for the village. As several kunai impale me, the genjutsu turns to red as the pain sets in.
I soon feel the gracious drops of rain replacing the stabbing ghost pains, quickly becoming a downpour, the genjutsu fades completely. I now realize why Kakashi had been so drained earlier, if it wasn’t for the ice cold adrenaline, I would’ve been passed out already.
“As you can see, we’ve met before. We were only mindless children then, cloaked by masks to hide our true identity.” He drops to a solemn tone, tilting his head upwards to bask in the quickly chilling rain before his red eyes flash back to me,” no matter how similar our paths are, our fates deserve to end differently. if you choose this life, it’s only the same. But you risk having your identity known nationwide and your idealistic life thrown away. Do you choose to face death everyday? Do you choose to betray a village you call home?”
In the time it takes me to blink, he’s now mere inches from my face, hand outstretched,” if you can say yes, your heart is in the wrong place. Turn around and go back to the leaf. Do not pursue me any further, Y/N.”
Two of his fingers ghost over my brows for just a second, I can barely notice the thoughts running behind his tired eyes, but the slight flick of his view to the left gives him away. He decides to retract his fingers, and drapes his other hand to rest over the top of my head while I drop to my knees. My Jonin vest feels heavy with rain, maybe even regret that i didn’t even remember one of my closest friends as a child, maybe even my first love, but most of all the one who made it seem I wasn’t capable of loving anyone else.
“How could I not remember anything you just showed me?” I babble, looking up to his now normal eyes as tears bubble at my lashes, only to be concealed by the rain.
“Because It was a burden I relieved you of. You should be thankful.” He answers coolly, refusing either of us the blessing of breaking eye contact. I flick a collection of tears and water angrily from my face,” younger me was in love with you. We loved each other. You can’t deny that.”
His eyes trickle down to the hand fidgeting with the metal rod at my side, his face illuminating against a streak of lightning,” You’re a fool to think an auditory genjutsu would even begin to work on me.”
“No, but metal rods are great conductors of electricity.” I seethe, reaching my musical rod above me to the sky as I grip his arm that still rested atop my head. It was a weak last ditch effort, i couldn’t subdue him, but I could at least kill us both. As quickly as the white steak shoots down towards us, we’re transported further in to the forest. My hand is slightly burnt, but I find myself furled tightly in Itachi’s arms, back to his chest as his cloak billows around us in the increasing winds. I chuckle slightly,” so, you do still care about me.”
“Nonsense, I just prevented you from unnecessarily ending both of our lives.” Itachi utters out, clearing his throat.
“Bullshit. You could’ve let me fry in that lightning strike and saved yourself, easily.” I assert my dominance, twisting in his arms to face him as he refuses to let go. He looks down, smirking as he smoothes away a few strands of hair that cling to my face,” if I could love as easily as I fought against others, you would’ve been mine the day I bandaged your adolescent hand. This however, is not a life for love. My destiny is to die and I refuse for you to have any part of it.”
“Then just give me this moment.” I exhale, bringing a hand to rest on the side of his face,” I’ve just learned about you all over again and I refuse to let you leave without a word just like when we were kids.”
“You seen what I did to my clan.” He reminds me quietly.
“And for some reason, I feel like your hand was forced in to doing it. The Itachi I just witnessed loved his clan. He loved the leaf village. He defended the village he betrayed.” I share my quick observation.
“This conversation is over.” Itachi warns, squinting his eyes in remorse and possibly a hint of anger. I just knew I was right. And if I’m able to return to the village, I’ll have some research to do.
“If you don’t want to talk about it, then you’ll have to find a damn good way to shut me up, because I have a lot of questions.” I shoot back, anxiety of not knowing the story creeps against my body. And just as I’m about to start my rampage of questions, his lips crash against mine and his hands grip tightly at my shoulders, letting the cool rain water dripping from us both clash together, pooling down to our chins before it drips against the cloak that weakly offers us the tiniest bit of shelter. As he pulls away, his eyes flutter slowly, taking in my look of confusion. Sadly for him, it’s only created more questions, but most of all it also created answers.
“You still love our village. You still love me.” I gasp out looking at the furrow in his angering brows,” and to continue in protecting the things I love, you must not interfere or prod any further. Return to the village before you end up in the same position. This is my last warning, Y/N. Or this will end badly for the both of us.”
He pushes me against my shoulders, sending my body head first to the ground frozen, in a state of shock as the world melds to a red haze. Just as I hit the ground, an inky black feather drops on my face, restarting the chain of events over again. And again. And again. Each time I fall, the feather drops, I smack in to the ground and Itachi’s face melds against my vision as the sequence drones on for what feels like hours,” do you wish to be stuck in a loop of constant suffering? Living out your days where every last one is the same, ending with an unbearable pain… just to realize it’ll happen again. And again. And again. This is the constant pain you will feel outside of the village as a rogue. You don’t understand that by pressing further on this matter, by seeking me purposefully after this point, my only choice would regretfully be having to kill you.”
A scream tears at my throat, only to be cut off from hitting the ground again, and after what felt like a whole day stuck in the same loop, I find myself on the ground mere seconds from passing out once again. I look up to see Itachi’s face hovering above mine and feel his knees supporting my head. He swiftly brushes a rain soaked strand of hair from my face and leans in for one last breathy statement,” I truly hope one day you’ll be strong enough to understand. When that day comes, I will be long gone but I will never ask for your forgiveness.”
As my eyes shut, he scoops down for one last kiss and disappears with the sound of a ghost. Silence ushers a single black feather to land against my cheek, allowing me to finally give in to the depleted chakra ebbing towards unconsciousness.
Bells. The pain of having to hear those stupid bells. A single chirp awakens me in a startle, grasping at the sterile white blanket around me as I gasp in the stale air.
“Hey, lay down damnit. You’ve gone and gotten yourself in to enough trouble already, Y/N.” Shikaku sensei grumbles from the bedside, slamming me backwards as gently as possible as he sets my bell staff against the table.
“Why are you here sensei? Don’t you have more important village duties to attend to?” I mumble out, finally relaxing enough to stare at the ceiling.
He groans, pondering what he’ll say next,” with a lack of Jonin from the recent attack, Asuma rang in a favor to help track you so they could get Kakashi Hatake to immediate medical attention. We first found Guy almost six miles from you, stuck in a genjutsu. Wonder who would be rash enough to do that...”
“How’s Kakashi?” I ask, refusing to meet what I assume is his drained and less than pleased face.
“He’ll be in medical care for a while. Same goes for you. You’re almost worse off than him. With how much you two get in to trouble, I’m starting to wonder if you’re related. Anything else you want to ask, kid?” He questions, most likely already knowing the answer. I turn to look in to his unimpressed eyes,” I should ask you that first.”
He finally smirks,” we’ll keep this conversation between us so long as I don’t have to pry it out of you.”
I could always appreciate the fatherly bond Shikaku established since my early chunin days, realizing my own mother could barely provide the support or parental love for my sister and I. Shikamaru had even called me big sister begrudgingly. Shikaku finally parts his lips after thinking on it,” why did you put Guy under a genjutsu?”
So he knew it was my genjutsu after all.
“His taijitsu was too weak against our target. We were tailing the man that left Kakashi in the state he’s in now. I only did it to protect him.” I answer truthfully. It was best to avoid seeing Guy hurt, even if I feel no romantic attraction to all of his… not too subtle advancements.
“So you proceeded to pursue someone as a one person unit you knew you wouldn’t win against? How smart. It’s a miracle you made it back with just depleted chakra and a burnt hand. It’s almost as if the target took pity on you.” He ponders, slowly moving his eyes back to meet mine in confirmed and definite disappointment.
“I was just able to use my staff as a lightning conductor to buy myself some time before being placed under a genjutsu. No one was hurt. That’s all that matters.” I huff out, turning my body completely away in anger before Shikaku sounds off my bells again in contemplation,” a genjutsu user falling for another genjutsu is unlikely, unless this genjutsu came from the power of the sharingan. I also trained my students to not pursue dangerous opponents with those kind of powers. But I know I trained my students better than that, right Y/N?”
“Are you just here to lecture me, or are you looking for answers?” I sneer out, slowly becoming agitated at his sensei personality taking over his fatherly one.
“Both. Just as I and my jutsu are useles in utter darkness, yours is useless when you don’t use your mind to think properly. I think we can silently agree you won’t try and pursue Itachi anymore and you’ll stay here until you’re fully healed. Then we will go through some training. You, me and Shikamaru. Just like old times.” Shikaku chuckles out, revealing that without even telling him, he already knew. I toss my pillow at him in an attempt to stop his laughing,” does this mean you’re old self is coming out of retirement as a sensei?”
“Don’t throw the word old out so loosely. I’m only returning as your sensei because I think your own mind is dulling with age.” He smirks, returning to his fatherly demeanor, but I could still see the subtle look of worry behind the joking facade. I refused to notify him of my actual encounter with Itachi, but he leads me to believe he knew of our past and it’s easy for a Nara to put two and two together.
“Yeah, yeah. Now get out so I can rest up and show you I’m just fine without a sensei.” I laugh out as he shakes his head,” prove me wrong, Y/N. I’m not bailing you out of any future mistakes.”
“I’m counting on that.”
With a final word, he kicks a resting foot off the wall and throws his hands in to his pocket to stroll out the open door nonchalantly. I needed rest, and I was told not to press any further. But I had research to do, even if it was from a hospital bed. I was going to get to the bottom of this, even if my destiny entwines to meet the same bitter end as Itachi presumes his will be.

~Lost~ Chapter 5: A Fresh Start
Pairing: Kakashi x Reader x Iruka
Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4
The next morning felt like it was taken straight out of a Disney movie: You woke up well-rested, your hair somehow fell perfectly on your shoulders, the soft light of the morning sun was shining through the window and you could hear the birds sing a lovely song outside. At least that's how you wished it happened. In reality, you woke up to the sound of your body hitting the not so soft wooden floor from rolling off the couch. After standing up groaning, you realized what most likely caused your body to move in the first place. It was the smell of your favorite drug: coffee.
Your feet started to move in the direction of the light that was coming from another room. You somehow managed to make it through the dark living room without knocking anything over and stepped into the door frame of the kitchen. As soon as your eyes adjusted to the brightness you got a glance at your new roommate: He was busy making omelets, wearing a dark blue shirt that accentuated his toned upper body, but his headband was gone. Right when you opened your mouth to greet him, he turned around and suddenly every word you wanted to say was forgotten, replaced with one thought:
How did he get that scar?
Kakashi looked you up and down and you could see his lips form a smirk under his mask.
"Not a morning person, I assume?"
Hey, what's that supposed to mean? You huffed in a playful way and crossed your arms. "Well, good morning to you too. What time is it anyways?" He chuckled at your reaction and gestured you to sit down at the neatly set table.
"It's 4:58. I want to introduce you to a lot of people today, so I thought it would be better to get started early." After you both put your hands together and said "itadakimasu", he slowly put a hand on the hem of his mask to pull it down.
Now I'll finally see his entire face, you thought, watching him from the corner of your eyes. Suddenly, the clock on the countertop made a soft ding sound, announcing the fifth hour of the day. It made you look away for not more than two seconds, but when your eyes went back to Kakashi he had already finished his entire meal. That's...impossible. No one can eat that fast. He seemed to know exactly what was going through your head, because his face had an expression that could only be described as mischievous as you stared at him in complete disbelief.
"Do I have something on my face?", he asked a little bit too innocently, making you narrow your eyes.
"Even if you did, I wouldn't be able to tell", you mumbled pouting. He chuckled again and you couldn't resist to join him.
He's actually kinda cute...way out of my league though. I still wonder what he thinks of me... Then you remembered his words from last night.
You're potential help for the village, nothing more.
You decided to excuse yourself to the bathroom and took a look in the mirror. Now it became clear why it was so easy for Kakashi to tell that you're not a morning person at all: With hair standing in every direction, heavy eye bags and half lidded eyes you resembled a zombie more than a human. After taking a cold shower,you grabbed your brush and went to work while your thoughts went back to your roommate.
So he already made clear what he thinks of me. I'm just a helper, replaceable. I mean, what did I expect in the first place? Sure, he laughs when I try to be funny and seems really fun to be around in general, but I think he's not that fond of having to watch me all the time now, he's just being polite. Okay, let's try to focus on the positive side, alright? It wouldn't be smart to have a crush on your host anyways, I'm probably saving myself a lot of drama if I think of him as a potential friend instead of a potential boyfriend...right?
You made sure you looked somewhat presentable again and left the house with Kakashi. The first warm rays of sunlight reaching over the hokage mountain, paired with all the little cottages between the cherry blossom trees in full bloom composed one of the most breathtaking views that you ever caught sight of.
"Amazing", you whispered in awe.
"This is another reason why I wanted to get up so early", Kakashi said next to you. "I want to show you how beautiful Konoha can really be, even in this state." You gave him a warm smile. "Thank you so much for your effort. And you already got me convinced, this really is a beautiful place. So, what exactly are our plans today?"
"Hmm, let's see...I would like to give you a tour around the whole village first, and after lunch I have a training session with my team. You wanted to see some ninjutsu, right?" You nodded enthusiastically. "Of course! But we also have to find a place where I can help, because we don't want to disappoint the Lord Hokage now, do we?" You said in a slightly mocking tone. Kakashi raised his one visible eyebrow.
"Oh, I see. So that's the only reason you want to help?" he asked teasingly, which made you giggle, but your expression went serious again when you answered. "Not at all. Like I said, that's the absolute least I can do. And I want to make this place even more beautiful, so that maybe I'll be able to see Konoha in full splendor one day."
KAKASHI'S POV
So she's already planning on staying longer, huh?
I couldn't help but smile at that thought, as we slowly walked towards the new center of the village.
"Also I hope that this will get the villagers to accept me", I heard her murmur, almost as if she was talking more to herself than to me.
Wait, that sounds awfully familiar.
"Hmm, if you want to be accepted by the villagers, I might know the right person for you to talk to. He's actually a student of mine and he-"
"OUT OF THE WAY! MOVE! MAKE PLACE FOR THE POWER OF YOUTH!"
I quickly grabbed (Y/N)'s arm and pulled her to the side, right before I saw a flash of green and orange rush by, already knowing who it belonged to. After the flash came to a stop abruptly it revealed Might Guy in full glory, standing on his hands.
"Ahh, if it isn't my eternal rival! How refreshing to see you so vigorous and youthful on this delightful morning, Kakashi!" He exclaimed jumping back on his feet, looking a little less insane than before.
"Morning, Guy" I responded with a smile. His eyes then fell on (Y/N) who was standing next to me completely frozen. She was staring at Guy with a baffled look on her face, and honestly I can't blame her. Guy can be a lot to take in, especially when you're not used to this type of personality.
"Oh, who is this youthful lady on your side? Have we met before?" (Y/N) quickly snapped out of it and replied with a shy smile.
"Umm, no. My name is (Y/N) (Y/l/N), I'm...new here. And what's your name?"
"You're in the presence of Might Guy, Konoha's Sublime Green Beast of Prey! Well, it was nice to meet you (Y/N), but I have to continue my rounds around the village now. Only 384 more to go!"
(Y/N) suddenly broke out into laughter. She probably took his extreme training routine as a joke, which I understand completely, it's just absurd what that man is capable of. A moment later she noticed that Guy looked a bit offended by her reaction and quickly caught herself.
"Wait, you're joking, right?" Guy puffed himself up and put his hands on his hips.
"I most certainly am not! I have to train hard for the sake of youthfulness and so that I can beat my dear rival Kakashi in all the challenges that may come!" And with that he gave us a thumbs up and jumped back on his hands, only leaving a big cloud of dust as he continued on his way.
(Y/N) still looked flabbergasted. "Is...is this training what he does considered normal around here?"
ORIGINAL POV
Kakashi let out a small chuckle. "Oh no, he's a bit extreme even for shinobi standards."
What a strange man, you thought and shook your head. He then offered you his arm to hold on to and gave you his signature close-eyed smile.
"Shall we?"

So umm, if anyone is wondering when the f*ck Iruka is coming into play, the answer is: next chapter. Anyways, hope you enjoyed it. Peace out!

What I confessed while daydreaming
Kakashi x reader
Summary: The advantage of training with Kakashi is that you can have him close. Maybe a little too close. (Slowburn fluff and character background because why not). Set before team 7, Kakashi and you are not dating. Yet
A/N: this is a character insert fic and though is Kakashi x reader centered I want reader to be involved with other characters.
W/C: 3000 +
"That's enough ramen for today Naruto," Iruka's hand stopped the blond child. Not a second after, said child was already whining, loudly.
"Naruto, that's your sixth bowl of ramen in a row! Iruka-sensei is right, it's enough for today," you said, mocking at the kid, "one more bowl and you're gonna have to go back to your house rolling," you laughed at him.
"If you want another bowl you'll have to pay for it, Naruto," the sensei stated in a reprimanding voice.
"Uh-... hehehe" he giggled as he scratched his head, "I better get going, I have homework to do," and he left sprinting.
Iruka's sigh was cut by your loud laugh, "He's gonna empty my wallet soon, I swear." the brown-haired smiled at you.
"Don't worry, we can split the check," you said as you took out the money.
"It's ok YN-san, you don't have to do th-"
"It's fine! I just got the first paycheck from the hospital," you winked at him.
"How's that going?"
"Uhmm... It's going good I guess... I'm learning a lot but chakra molding is exhausting. Not hard, but exhausting."
"You do look tired."
"I haven't slept well," that dream was becoming more recurrent and you couldn't crack what made you uneasy about it.
Mau, come to me, my child...
The voice echoed in your head.
"Do you know what 'Mau' means?" you turned to Iruka.
"Well, it's not a word used anymore but many years ago it was used to name the period where seasons start to change. It means 'whirling dance' like the motion cherry blossoms make when they fall from the trees. Why?"
"I've been having this dream lately... It's like... flying and lots of colors... and... there's this... being, I think it's a man, that calls me daughter..." your pensive voice slowly silenced and your gaze was lost, "You must think I'm crazy," you chuckled.
"No, no. I've also had dreams that feel weird and I can't shake off the feeling," he gave you a warm smile, "It's not a nightmare, is it?"
You shook your head, "No, it's actually nice, sort of. But this being, this man, keeps calling for me and I always wake up before I can reach him,"
"Maybe it'll shake off once you do."
What does he want from me?
"Maybe..." you took a sip from your drink and sighed. Iruka took out his wallet to pay for the other half of the check and, as he did, you stared at him not noticing the smile drawing on your face.
Life in Konoha was becoming routine. Not in a bad way though. The streets and the people had begun to feel familiar, you were no longer an outsider, you were slowly building a life there... one you knew you would eventually have to leave behind.
The thought of that made your chest burn. You frowned.
"What is it?" Iruka interrupted your thoughts.
"Hhmm?" you turned your eyes to him, "Oh, I just, uhm- remembered something," you gave him a reassuring smile, "I gotta go now. See you next week?"
"Sure. It's not like Naruto is gonna take a no for an answer, anyway," the sensei knew his student. You weren't seeing each other for training anymore because you didn't have enough time, but you always found moments to hang out, and lately, Naruto had been the excuse.
"See you then," you smiled as you waved goodbye.
~~~~~~
Every afternoon Sasuke left school and head himself to a place in the forest to train his aim. His determination was much like Naruto's except he wasn't searching for glory. It didn't come from a desire for recognition. It came from a dark painful place. A void in his heart that you had found nothing could fill. Not your warm smiles, or your kind gestures. Not even your power, apparently.
By this point, you had run out of ideas on how to befriend him.
After that time you asked Naoki-san to cook a meal for him and you received nothing but a cold "thank you" from Sasuke, and "It is rude to stay somewhere you were not invited in the first place," when you tried to establish a conversation, it was very clear to you that he wasn't gonna let you into his life that easily or at all. So all you could do was keep him company while hiding. It was against your nature not to help. And also every time you were near him, the pain you felt was so strong you wanted to die and kill everyone around you. That could turn into something dangerous.
No one deserves to feel that way and be left alone.
So you followed him into the forest, hid behind a tree, and sat, hugging him with your chakra, trying to contain him.
You let tears run down your cheeks in complete silence to ease the pain coming from him. His chakra felt like a fortress made by the thickest and coldest ice. Every time your chakra reached his you felt the burn of cold rage in your chest and a lump in your throat that stopped you from making any clear sound.
How can he go through life like this?
He was an orphan, you had found. One of many in the village, but no one carried that pain.
The tentacles of your chakra surrounded his, hugging him tightly as you whispered in your thoughts,
You are not alone, you are loved, you don't have to play strong, I'm with you... You are not alone, you are loved, you don't have to play strong, I'm with you... You are not alone, You are loved... you are loved, you are not alone...
A crack in the frozen fortress.
He threw another Kunai screaming from the bottom of his lungs with the hoarsest voice and fell, knees on the ground.
"WHY??!!!" He shouted at the sky, crying, "WHY DID YOU BETRAY US, BROTHER??!! WHY???!!" He sobbed uncontrollably, "WHY DIDN'T YOU KILL ME, ITACHI!!??" He threw the rest of the kunais furiously as he wept louder and louder.
You hugged him tighter trying to keep his emotions together, containing him with all you could so that he didn't shatter.
"I admired you..." he sobbed "I wanted to be like you... how could you...? I-... Mom-..." Sasuke took a deep breath, "but she's never coming back now..." he cried.
And as he tried to contain his sobs you felt the crack in the fortress harden again, and a strong wave of energy pushed you back,
"And that's why I have to kill you."
The crack disappeared. He stood up in silence and left.
Distance broke the contact between your chakras and you were left alone in the woods with a feeling of abandonment you had never felt before.
***********
"Stop that, child! you're gonna hurt yourself!"
"But mom, I want to learn how to fight"
"That's for boys, my love, leave it to your brother"
"But I like swords, mommy, they make me feel powerful"
"Stop it! before you hurt yourself"
A scream. You hurt yourself. Mom had been right.
"Why does my brother get to learn with swords and I don't?"
"Because he's a boy and boys are better with those things"
"But Taro-sensei says-"
"-You already tried and failed,"
"My brother still fails sometimes"
"I don't want to hear another word on the subject child!"
You remembered those conversations so clearly. They constantly echoed in your mind like hunters of every single one of your decisions and every single one of your mistakes. As if everything you did was a way to prove that failure was not the end but one more step to move forward. But they had never let you fail freely, you always had to have everything figured out from the beginning.
But EVERYONE failed from time to time. There was no way to achieve greatness without failure.
Drops of sweat ran down your forehead as you bent forward to lay your hands on your knees, trying to ease your breathing. Frowning, you turned to see the targets painted in front of you, straightened your body again, placed yourself in position, and threw the kunai.
The weapon flew to your right as if it had a mind of its own and landed on the floor.
"God DAMN IT!!!!! WHY!!!!??" you squealed as you raised your hands to the air and pulled your hair.
There were Kunais scattered haphazardly all over the training ground.
Kakashi closed his book, turned to see you, and sighed as he listened to you insult and scold the kunais, your aim, the targets, and everything that crossed your path for the umpteenth time.
"You are aware that objects don't speak, aren't you?"
"I'm not trying to have a conversation with them, Kakashi- sensei, I'm just venting out" you replied annoyed.
"If you focused on practicing instead of 'venting out'," he said imitating your voice, "with a mouth that would put a sailor to shame, about something that is your fault, perhaps you would've achieved real progress and I would've finished my chapter in peace to be on time for my meeting." Kakashi's voice was calm almost sarcastic. Almost.
"ON TIME?" you snorted.
He nodded, "as is my custom."
You burst out laughing, "you should thank me, then," and channeling your chakra with one swift movement of your hand, pulled up all the kunais from the floor like a magnet to keep training.
Kakashi raised an eyebrow, a little surprised. At times he forgot about your power since he rarely saw you use it. "I don't understand why you bother yourself so much when you could have this solved so easily using that ability of yours," he said, maybe trying to comfort you. Truth be told he was actually impressed with your bad aim.
You fixed your eyes on him with a sarcastic look and turned your body towards him to have him in front of you and the targets to your side. You grabbed a Kunai, extended your arm, and threw it channeling your power. The weapon hit the target right in the center. A perfect throw.
Kakashi's eye widened just a little trying to hide his astonishment. If things had been different, you could've been a lethal kunoichi.
"But what is life without some challenge..." you stared at the nailed kunai, extended your arm again, and channeled your power to have the blade back in your hand. "I don't want to take the fun away from things. I didn't come here to learn something I already know, anyway," there were no shortcuts. It's one thing to master your power and another to master your moves. You wanted both. Complete control over your body.
You stared at the target with a killing look, grabbed the kunai tightly, and with one strong move, threw it with all your determination.
But it landed god knows where.
"FUUUUUUCKK!!!!" you yelled, defeated.
Kakashi grabbed a Kunai from your pocket and looked at you like asking you to pay attention. He threw the kunai with an elegant, soft move.
"Fuck you Kakashi, not only do you have perfect aim but you're also graceful as a ballerina. How do you do it? I bet that Kunai enjoyed being thrown through the air like" and you opened your arms and pretended you were floating, "I also want to fly through the air... will you throw me?"
Kakashi rolled his eye and smiled. "Get back to training," he said looking at you. You pouted but did as he said.
You took a deep breath before you placed yourself in position. Kakashi stared at you, without giving it much thought he mimicked your movement which led him to step closer to you. That made you lose focus and you turned your eyes to him.
"Uh- you're not using your core the way you should, that's why they always go sideways, look, you'd have to-" he placed himself behind you to help you understand the motion. His hands guided your arms as he explained what to do with your core, "Get it?"
Took you an instant to recover your breath. Had he not realized he'd been speaking the instructions to your ear? Was he seducing you? You turned your gaze to meet his and focused on the feeling of his chakra.
Nope. Everything seemed normal. He had not realized. Until he met your gaze too and you stared into each other's eyes. With an awkward stutter, he took a step back to distance himself, "Care to try it again?"
You nodded and took a deep breath. Your heart was starting to race but you didn't want him to notice. It was probably too late though.
Then again you took a deep breath to focus and threw the kunai. It slammed against the wooden target and fell to the floor. You gasped. It was the first time you had managed to hit it. Next step: Stick the tip of the kunai into it.
You turned to Kakashi to find a satisfied grin on his face. He looked at you from the corner of his eye and said. "Well, I think my job is done." He headed off to the exit. When he noticed you didn't follow him he looked back at you.
"I'm gonna stay here until I get this fucking shit done right, have fun with your meeting" you waved goodbye and returned to your doings.
A smirk grew on his face. Your stubbornness reminded him of someone. A certain man that would climb mountains with a hand on his back over and over again.
What are you trying to prove, YN?
You didn't have to prove anything to anyone. Your family never expected anything from you but obedience. That for you it represented giving up your will. Over the years you had learned that if one day everything was missing, the only thing that would remain would be precisely that: your will. The only person you wanted to prove anything to, was yourself...
And you weren't going to walk out of the fucking training camp until you got that stupid shit done right.
Hours passed by, your arms got tired of the exercise but you didn't stop. Throw after throw you felt your body accustoming to the motion Kakashi showed you. Now and then you took a moment to rest your body from the numbness taking over, and went back to practice.
Suddenly, a sharp sound.
You had hit the target and nailed the kunai this time. You grinned. Finally. Now you had to be able to do it more than once and you'll be satisfied enough to leave and rest.
It got dark, the moon came out, the training grounds emptied, but your good throws were so arbitrary you didn't feel ready to call it quits.
You were about to give up from exhaustion when you hit the target twice in a row, and then a third and fourth and fifth and sixth and seventh time!! And though they didn't all hit the center they were all nailed in the wood and perfectly still.
"YEEEEEEEESSSS!!" you screamed so loud you scared some birds that should've been sleeping. Raising your hands to the sky in a sign of victory, you let yourself fall back on the ground and closed your eyes not only satisfied but proud. You only wished Kakashi had shown you the trick much sooner.
Kakashi...
You smiled at the memory of him so close to you. He hadn't hesitated before touching you. That had to mean something, right? He trusted you enough to get close to you without thinking. That had to be a good sign. Even if after he realized it all turned awkward. It was a start. Your heart felt happy. It had been a good day. Good company and a lesson learned. It had only taken you hours to complete the task. About a hundred hours, but still, you felt you could now rest peacefully.
**********
Shinobi life was not comfortable and rarely happy. Too much loss and too many wounds. But at that moment Kakashi could swear without fear of being wrong that bureaucracy was worse than any mission. And having to endure a meeting for hours with people who are not capable of reaching an agreement had left him annoyed. He was dying to get home for dinner and a bath. Surely he would also read for a while before going to sleep. It was a full moon night and Bull had destroyed his curtains a couple of days ago trying to catch a bird that had sneaked into his home so the light wouldn't let him sleep that easy anyway.
As he walked by the training grounds the memory of your scent so close to him earlier in the morning flooded his thoughts, and a feeling of discomfort and maybe even shame flooded his body. How could he be so disrespectful invading your space like that? He hoped you hadn't stayed on the training grounds to avoid walking with him. He enjoyed your little (sometimes not so little) chats. You were his friend. At least he thought of you as his friend. Would you think of him as your friend too?
Maybe not...
Does it matter Kakashi?
Maybe not...
He decided not to dwell on the matter and that he simply would not touch you again to get rid of doubts and problems, he didn't want to scare you away.
His eyes searched the spot where you'd been as he wondered if you had achieved your goal. Would he see your progress next time? He smirked. He probably would, you always leveled up each training. When would he see you again? You hadn't settled the next session.
His eyes stopped when they bumped onto a familiar figure lying on the ground. It was you. What were you doing?
He walked towards you, hands in his pockets, only to find that you had fallen asleep. Many kunais were lying on the floor and, nailed on the wood, seven of them perfectly still. He smiled proudly. So you had done 'this shit right'.
STUBBORN GIRL.
He leaned down to wake you up.
"YN," he whispered as his hand moved your shoulder gently, "YN, wake up," but instead of waking up, you took a deep breath and turned to your side. He looked around thinking what to do. But it was too late and there weren't many options. He looked back at you tenderly and stroked your hair. Maybe he'll postpone the part of not touching you for later. He carried you in his arms and left the training grounds jumping on trees and buildings to get to your house faster. The oscillation made you open your eyes and somehow understand what was going on but it wasn't enough to wake you up.
Until he reached your doorstep. He hesitated for a moment, not sure if putting you to bed could be considered trespassing. Maybe it was disrespectful... Maybe that was crossing a line... He had crossed enough lines for one day, he thought.
When you realized you were at your door you made an effort to wake up. Kakashi helped you stand.
"Thanks for carrying me home" you yawned.
"I've been told the training grounds aren't a good place to sleep," he smiled at you. You smiled back almost completely asleep.
"Good night, Kakashi."
"Sleep tight, YN"
“Act 1 of 4 is finished! The Anatomy of Love will now be on break until April 2023.”
are you serious? I was hoping that the last chapter goes out in like a literal “bang” but it was just underwhelming. You mean to tell me we have to wait again for the sex scenes? We have been patient and understanding while you tease us that there’s gonna be spicy scenes and when there’s none.
Be real with me, is there really gonna be spicy sex scenes between Sakura and Kakashi? if there’s none after four months, then please say so. I am gonna speak for everyone that we prefer not to wait again and fr four months for no sex scene to happen. Like I am sorry but I literally cried after reading the last chapter due to severe disappointment and my partner asked if I was okay. I was literally waiting and waiting and trying to be patient omg. Please just tell us. I feel like I’m just being made a fool when I know that’s not your intention but it just feels like it. I feel like a dumb idiot for believing you would prove those haters wrong and not gonna be cruel and tease us again but you really proved them to be right and questing my confidence in you.
I know it's Christmas right now but you are the equivalent of a child who opens 40 Christmas gifts and throws a tantrum when they only got a gameboy, laptop, iPhone, etcetc but not the Lamborghini they've been asking for because their parents said not yet.
This Ask reeks of entitlement and I am honestly disappointed that still readers like you persist. You and everyone else have been told multiple times by myself and even by other readers that this is a slowburn/slowbuild and that if your main reason for reading this fic is just for the teacher x student smut then you will be disappointed because this is not just your typical cliche teacher/student porn fic. If your main reason for reading this fic is to read a story with substance and a side of smut then you will be happy to read.
If you want to read teacher x student porn because you're so horny for sex that you don't want to read a story with substance and development, then there are already plenty of KakaSaku fics that do that.
Since it's Christmas and I'm feeling generous, I will even link you a few of those porn fics to help satisfy your horniness.
Ride by al_holland
Happy meal by StrangeBeautiful
Sakura Dates the Teacher by swbooker
You see how there are already so many KakaSaku teacher/student porn fics that satisfy your need for smut more quickly?
Since it seems smut is your main priority, please go read those fics. Otherwise, please do not complain when you get a can labeled Beans and you open the can and get mad when you see you got Beans.
Also, you do realize that fanfic writers are NOT your slaves? We are real humans who exist in real life. Which means we have real-life responsibilities. We do NOT get paid to entertain you with our stories. Which means you are NOT in a position to be mad about the fic (or any fic) going on break or the smut coming later.
Fanfic writers should be able to take a break from their fic for however long they want, for whatever reason they have, and not be harassed for it. They are also allowed to quit their fic as well and not be harassed for it either.
Honestly, this Ask is really disgusting.
-Going Between Dimensions-
Part 16 - Talkative Drunk
Kakashi Hatake x reader
Masterlist
AN: things are finally comming togheter, and memories are back. It has been a slowburn soo far, but now it is slowly going thowards the two 😊
Taglist: @fuzzyfestcat , @ari-hatake15
A quick shower and some dinner when you got home was making the hours go by before you had to meet up with everyone at the bath house. Suprisingly you were the first one there. "How late am I?" Kakashi's voice came from above you as you looked up and saw he was standing on the fence. "actually you are early... The others are late" You frowned and sighed as kakashi jumped down and looked at you. "really? That was a new one" He had his usual posure, with his hands in his pockets as he leaned on the fence. "right?" you muttered before you heard small laughs coming from the street.
"oy, Sorry.. ANKO USED FOREVER!" Genma started to run thowards you with Anko behind. "I did not!" you watched them and tilted your head. "allready fighting?" You looked at them in disbelief, knowing how the night would end up. "Ey, what do I say.. I have that effect on people" Genma shrugged and smirked, while the toothpick was in the corner of his mouth. "That is one thing I can agree with.." Anko rolled her eyes before hugging you. "look who finally got her uniform fitted! Now you can hunt the men!" She smirked as she watched you, while a blush creeped up on your cheek. "wha... Don't drag me into that stuff." You put your hands up nervously. "Who knew that you actually hid something underneath the old uniform." Genma said plainly, earning him a hit from Anko straight to the head. "I see things never change" Kakashi looked at all of you.
"Offcourse not, biggest flirt is still the biggest flirt.." You sighed. When the rest arrived you all were finally able to go inside. Kakashi, Asuma, Genma and Gai went to the mens side while Anko, Kurenai and you to the girls. "I am soo ready for some sake" Anko sighed as she walked out to the small hot spring. "just don't get drunk here.. We have the pub after" Kurenai added before getting in. You smiled happily and got in yourself and sighed. "I really needed this" you hummed happily and filled everyone a glass of sake and gave to them. "imagine all of us going out togheter.. It has been years" Kurenai smiled happily. "it has... Last time was in our early teens.. Never gone out for drinks all of us like that" You thought about it. It was always someone missing.
What could been better? A hour to soak in the hot spring with some sake after a long day with the best people around you.. It was like heaven. Even if it was just for a hour before you guys had to move on to the pub, it was still worth it. The three of you girls were able to finnish a bottle each just chatting along and enjoying the time before you heard Gai's voice from the barrier. "get ready girls, we are heading and ready for a Yuthful night!" at least they choosed the loudest to let you all know.
When everyone had gotten the clothes back on, you sighed. "I need to come back one day soon" You muttered as you were the last one to leave the room and went to meet up with the others. Surely it wasen't just the girls that was tipsy, most of the boys seemed to be aswell. "anko, lead the way" Genma wrapped a arm around her shoulders as he whispered something to her and smirked. "ok, lets go!" Anko cheered and dragged Genma along. You all almost walked in pair, Anko and Genma in the front, Asuma and Kurenai, Kakashi and Gai, then you behind. "Oy, Y/N was what that trick you told Anko about?" Genma suddenly had come to walk next to you. "what trick?"
"the flirting one, that even made her look shocked.. I wanna win the flirting battle tonight" Genma whispered as he looked at you. "ah, I see... But I can't help you.. Flirting with girls isn't my thing... Just read some books.. Thats where I got it from" You shrugged and smiled as Genma looked defeated. "that is not helping me now.. What do you women like then?" You narrowed your brows, seeing the competition shine in his eyes. "damn.. You ask the woman with the least experince, ya know?" You sighed and thought. "Do what you normally do, just be sweeter, and hard to get.. Maybe add on some sexyness into it.." The toothpick in his mouth were visably roling over his tounge as he thought. "I think I get it, thanks" He winked before running back to Anko. "least experince?" Kakashi looked over at you with some curiousity in his eyes. "are you normally listening in?" He slowed down a bit soo he could walk next to you. "only when it gets intresting"
"soo this was intresting?" you watched him as he nodded. "to be someone without experince you knew alot about flirting" He chuckled. "mediocre at best would I say, just throw the right words in there and he will get it" You defended. "And I was around Master Jirayia for too long, picked up a thing or two" You reminded him carefully. Luckily there were no more questions about it as you all got to the pub and found a booth to sit in. Asuma got the first round as most talked with eachother in their own way, and kakashi hadn't taken out his book yet, which meant a ok night. Anko and Genma had been on the flirt thing all night as anko leaned over. "Y/N, I need the line.." You looked at her and made a small face. "Seriously, dragging me into this?" Anko nodded and gave you her pleading eyes. "please, with sugar on top, just one line" You nodded and thought a bit. "How far are you taken it?" this caught Kakashi's attention as he started to listen in. "as far as I have too, I just need a line" This was more intresting than what he had thought it would be. He were happy his smile of amusent were hidden under the mask right now. "ok, the one that breaks him each time.. Just turn on the sexy voice and go.. Wouldn't you like to see how flexible I am senpai... And flutter your lashes" You explained simply. Kakashi grabbed onto his glass a bit thighter, he had forgotten about that voice of yours now, and having it reminded this way were not it.
You gave Kakashi a small push to the side before looking at him, hinting for him to watch what was gonna happen. He acted like he didn't know anything as he did what you suggested, just in time to see Gemna falling off the chair and Anko smirking. "Wierd how they haven't got togheter yet if you ask me" You giggled a bit as you sat back and finnished your drink. "That line is from a book?" He knew which book too. "Yes, first icha icha, chapter 9.. Wierd they haven't caught on to it yet" You admitted, not noticing his blush, and shocked expression. "you are way to young for those.." He struttered. "We are the same age.. And who do you think had to read them for approval?" He almost spit his drink out, as he placed the glass down. "I get some more to drink" You smiled and got up and walked over to the bar, taking your round for the table.
You smiled at the bartender and ordered another round for the table as Genma walked up. "fuck me.. Anko got some lines" He muttered, making you give his shoulder a comforting pat. "dear dear, You figure out a comeback." it was hard holding back a laughter. Their silly flirting game had been going on for years. "Ok, just get her on two on two and whisper to her.... Your place or mine, I wanna test that flexibility" You smirked as Genma brighten up. "got it! Thank you!" He smirked as he walked back to the table. The best thing is knowing you had won over both of them, since you gave them the lines. When the drinks came you carefully carried them all over to the table, as carefully as you could in your drunken state." We will be back!" Anko said as she got up from her seat and held onto Genma's wrist before dragging him along out of the pub. "What did you do Y/N?" Asuma looked at you and chuckled. "I don't know what you are talking about?" You played innocent as you sat back in your seat.
"On another hand they are kind of a good cupple" Kurenai said softly, while the drunken blush was on her cheek. "And they still don't see it themself, like his silly week chruses on me and so on.. It is to piss her off" You smiled and took a sip of your drink. "Soo lets find you a match then!" Gai smirked happily, also getting drunk at this point. "me? You serious?" Gai nodded. "If Anko and Genma is becoming a thing, kurenai and Asuma.. Oh my, that means only us three left out of that yuthful experince!" Gais eyes went wide as he realised. "I need to start right away" Gai got up and left, making you look confused. "Should we worry?"
"maa.. It is Gai, he can handle himself" Kakashi brushed it off. "well, more drinks for us" You smiled and conntinued to drink with the others for the rest of the night. All four of you getting awfully drunk at the end of the night. "I follow you home.." Kakashi offered as you all walked from the bar. "Aren't you sweet" You teased happily, trying to walk straight. "You know, I have a bottle or two at home" You gave a sloppy wink to him, not ready to finnish the night just yet. "Ok, I join if we can play a game" Now was his chance, he had you alone and it was time to get the information he needed. "what game?" You fiddles with your key's as you walked up to your appartment. "Truth or dare?"
"Kakashi, aren't we too old for that?" the giggle was hard to hold back as you looked at him. "No, I don't think soo.. And it is fun" Those words were not normal to hear out of his mouth, making himself hold back a cringe as he said them. "ok then." You unlocked the door and walked inside with him before walking over to get the glass and bottles. "living room then?" You smiled and walked in with him as you sat down on the floor and leaned against the couch. Kakashi walked over and sat down next to you. "ok, you start then" You commanded as you filled your glasses.
"what do you pick?" He leaned against the couch aswell. "Truth" it was always the easy pick, wasen't it. "ok, when was the last time you dated?" you stopped in your tracks, the glass resting on your lips as you eyed him. "you too?" He just chuckled. "well, dated.." you narrowed your brows as you started to count. "damn.. It has been many years.. 5 maybe 6...more?" You were not sure at all. "Naruto had just moved out last time I was in any kind of dating situation" Kakashi looked at you, at least you remember that part.. But that was more than before. The questions started to get worse from his side, like he was interigating you. "I take dare then" You decided later, thinking you were smart. "ok, you have to pick truth the rest of the game" He winked at you, or blinked hard to tell. "Why don't we finnish the game and you just tell me why you ask all of theese wierd questions all of the sudden, and I might be honest" You poked his chin where you know his beautymark was, as you used to do way back then.
"how long have you remembered?" he blurred out as he looked at you. "remembered what part?" You wanted to know what he wanted and such a vauge question would not help. "You know exactly what" He looked at your hand that just had poked him as it hit you what he was refering to. "Well.. Us you mean?" This made him nodd. Finally you understood what all this was about. "It started after the Itachi thing months ago... Small memories came back, but not fully until the cloak came on" You looked at him, trying to read his face. "I know you wanted it to stay forgotten, soo I didn't tell you" You smiled and finnished your glass. "You think it was that I didn't want you too?" He sounded suprised by that and you nodded.
"Wasen't it.. Or is there more too it?" Now you had questions, and hopefully he would answer. "no, Thats not.. What did you see.. That night?" You had to think about it. "That night it happened or when I started to remember correctly?" "both" His answers were quick. You leaned back and thought a bit as you looked at the wall on the other side of the room. "that night.. I am not sure how to put it.." You mumbled, trying to word it in your drunken state were not easy. "my worst nightmare I guess..Hate, alot of hate.." You didn't really wanna remember. "You were avoiding me.. Not only that you were afraid of me for years after that..." Kakashi wanted to know, it was really easy to hear in his voice as he spoke.
"It was shown as if it was you doing it.. Like you hated me, for what I am.. Like you wanted me dead..." You thought if you should conntinue, but unsure if it was a good idea. "The last words I remembered that night was if you saw me again, You would not hesitate.." Kakashi turned you to look at him, now having his headband off. "wait, you belived that?" He sounded more hurt than annoyed. "It felt real.. I had never seen such hatred in your eyes before.. Thats why I think it played on my fears from back then" He leaned back as he listened. "When the memory came back, it was something else.. It wasen't like that.. It was someone else doing it" A sigh left Kakashi's mask. "I know... For years I thought it was my eye doing it... But when you healed me earlier.. I saw what you saw.. Someone else"
It got quiet between you two as you looked at him. "well on the bright side, You don't hate me" You smiled making him chuckle. "True.." He muttered. "but promise you don't tell Naruto I know what your face looks like.. I don't want that after me" You teased trying to cheer him up. "Well, it is kind of fun, maybe I tell him when he comes back." He smiled under his mask thinking it would be fun to make Naruto bug you for a change.. Then he remembered the last time he thought you were in on the game. "soo, The last hook up?" He asked carefully. "Oh, around 2 and a half years ago, wasen't planned just to much to drink and yo.." You stopped as you looked over at him. "wait a minute, mask off" you commanded as you looked at him. He carefully nodded and pulled it down, before looking at you carefully. "no way, it was you!?" You studied his face carefully, adding on the features from the photografer you had spent a drunken night with.
"Better to take the heat for it now" He said carefully as he blushed, now on full display. "how is that even possible.. I saw you two at the same time!" "shadowclones" He said plainly. "You have a few secounds to explain..." you warned carefully as you held back your own blush. "Well, it was to talk.. Since I thought you were in on the games.. But when you weren't I just took the oppertunity for a normal conversation.. And we got drunk and." You sighed. "Soo basically.. You were him?" you asked carefully. "yeah.. Lets just be happy you didn't pull the wig off.."
You shaked your head. "Soo my hook up were my ex.." You whispered. "that makes more sense actually" Kakashi looked over at you with a frown. "how come?" You filled your glass and took another sip. "For someone who never do hook ups, or anything like that.. Then suddenly doing it with one stranger, and somehow had a connection and things to talk about.. There is no odds for that" You looked at him. "but that is staying between us, anko is teasing me enough as it is" Kakashi relaxed a when he noticed you were not as mad as he thought you were gonna be, that was his biggest worry if the memories came back.. It was never meant to happen anyway. "Soo, what now? You are not gonna stop being my friend are you?" Your voice caught him offguard as he looked at you. "no, we can look at it as a fresh start..." You hummed and smiled. That is better than nothing.
Warnings: none in this chapter!
Enjoy! ♡
-------------------------------------------------------
Kakashi had tried his best to put Y/N out of his mind throughout the day, but the thought kept pestering him. He kept imagining her laugh, throwing her head back at something Genma said, and he would almost see red at the thought of it. Even worse, the idea of the two of them hooking up, would send him spiralling. As the evening drew nearer, he selfishly decided he needed to intervene.
He felt so guilty spying on them, as they stumbled towards her flat, but more than anything, he was annoyed at the fact that she'd invited him back. Deep down he knew how unfair and irrational his actions were, but he just couldn't stop himself from pressing further.
He hadn't even dropped his book the previous night. He just needed an excuse to interrupt their evening. Kakashi had used a substitution jutsu on a random box he'd found hiding under her bed, in support of his alibi. Despite his shame at how low he had stooped, part of him felt a sense of satisfaction from stepping in and showing the other jōnin who's territory this was. Then again, he had no right to claim Y/N as his own.
Burdened by these contradicting thoughts, Kakashi fled to his usual haunt - the park bench, where he'd bumped into her all those nights ago.
Back at her flat, Y/N sat down heavily. Although feeling mostly sober by now, her thoughts were at a disarray. She was upset by Genma's departure, she thought they had great chemistry and felt disappointed by his easy surrender. Having said that, she couldn't entirely blame the guy. Kakashi's notoriety followed him around, the awful nickname 'friend-killer' on everyone's minds when he walked passed. She wasn't afraid of him, but she could understand Genma not wanting to get on his bad side.
Oh, Kakashi. Just thinking about his antics earlier made her furious. What was he playing at, storming in there like that, pretending he'd spent the night with her. The more she played the scene over in her head, the more riled up she became. His nonchalant tone and sarcastic manners burned inside her mind's eye. He must've done it on purpose. But for what reason?!
Starting to feel herself go crazy, Y/N decided that she needed to confront the gray-haired trickster. And she knew exactly where to find him.
Unsurprisingly, he was in the park as if expecting her. She stormed towards him, unconcerned by the late hour.
"What the hell was that back there?" She demanded, letting her anger loose on him.
"I don't know what you mean." Kakashi acted casual, not looking up from his book.
"Oh please! You and I both know you have a million copies of that book, stashed in your house. This was deliberate!"
"I take it he's left, seeing as you're here, shouting at me."
"I'm not..." she had to consciously lower her voice. "I'm not shouting at you. And yes, what did you expect after that scene you caused. How did you even know he was there?!"
"I hear things." His sarcasm was infuriating.
"Why, Kakashi? What could you have possibly had to gain from embarrassing me like that?"
"Well, if you must know, Genma's a notorious playboy. I didn't think he was good enough for you." He replied, trying to convince himself as much as her that this had been his motivation.
She was astounded by his audacity. Recovering her composure, she spat back at him:
"Frankly, that's none of your business!"
"As your friend, I thought it my duty to intervene and..."
"No!" She cut him off, losing her nerve entirely. "You lost any authority over my lovelife the second you refused to be the focus of it." Her voice was no longer angry, but riddled with sorrow. Refusing to let herself fall apart in front of him, Y/N turned around and ran back to her flat, leaving a guilt-riddled Kakashi behind.
"Oh, boy...what have I done." He sighed into the night.
His earlier satisfaction from achieving his goal had completely disappeared, substituted by shame and regret. He'd recognised the hurt in her voice, forcing him to realise how he'd toyed with her tonight. He put his head in his hands in desperation.
One thing remained unclear to him; why had he done it? He'd acted almost impulsively, refusing to acknowledge a simple truth. Whether he wanted to or not, he was finally faced with an answer - he'd been jealous. Of course, he knew he had feelings for her, but he'd tried so hard to repress them for fear of losing her like so many before, that he'd hardly acknowledged them. And now... In his ignorance, he'd acted foolishly and threatened to lose her anyway.
"I have to fix this." He said to himself, still unsure of his next move.
Over the next few days, the rookie genin teams competed in the preliminary round of the chunin exam, where their numbers were significantly depleted. The remaining kids would go on to face each other in the finals, a month later. The Hokage called an assembly of all chunin and jōnin of the village.
"As you all know, many influential lords and politicians will be joining us during the final stage of the chunin exam. We need to showcase not only our village's strength, but our financial merits as well." The Hokage spoke.
"This is why, we are hosting an event to gain new investors, who will support our shinobi training program. It'll be held in one week, and I have personally invited some of the wealthiest merchants and title holders. I expect you all to attend and work towards charming our guests."
Great, Y/N thought, she only had a month to prepare Shino for the final matches, and now this.
None of the attendees seemed particularly pleased by the news, but one look at the Hokage's stern expression, and they all knew they had to do what was expected of them.
Leaving the meeting auditorium, it was Kakashi's turn to pull Y/N aside.
"Can we talk?" He said. Seeing her reluctance, he added a please at the end of his question.
She sighed and led him to a corner in the hallway, where it was quiet. They hadn't seen each other since that awful argument, but it still felt as fresh as the night it happened.
"Y/N, you have to know how sorry I am. I acted stupidly and things got out of control. I never meant to hurt you, truly." Kakashi looked genuinely remorseful as he spoke.
She'd planned on staying mad at him, but his sincerity cracked her stern exterior. There was no point in denying it, she had a soft spot for him, and she would forgive anything. But things couldn't go on like this.
She took a deep breath, letting her guard down.
"I want to be your friend, Kakashi, I really do. But I think we should stop with the late nights and surprise visits...both of us." She trailed off, avoiding his eye. She knew he'd be disappointed, upset even. She knew it, because her own heart was breaking as she spoke.
"We've gotten ourselves so emotionally intertwined, I think we can't lay any boundaries anymore."
He didn't interrupted her, didn't argue. How could he, when what she was saying was the truth.
"We can be friendly around each other... just not in the way we have been so far." She concluded.
Kakashi nodded silently. They remained in place for a moment.
"If that is what you want." He finally spoke, then promptly turned around and walked away.
Y/N sighed. What she had wanted was to be with him, but he'd taken that possibility away. Now it seemed they were both hurting.
The following week passed quickly. Between training with Shino and her other jōnin duties, Y/N had hardly any time to dwell on her recent personal drama, and she was glad for it. Only at night, when sleep would undoubtedly evade her, she desperately wished to see him, fighting the urge to seek him out with all her strength.
"It'll get easier." She kept telling herself, never fully believing it.
Kakashi applied himself vigorously to training Sasuke, even teaching him the chidori. He was somber and quiet the rest of the time, which wasn't unusual for the typically withdrawn copy-ninja, or at least so it seemed on the outside. In truth, he was suffering at the loss of Y/N more than he wanted to admit.
He would roam around the village at night, hoping to bump into her, if even for a second, then quickly hiding at the faintest of sounds, ashamed of his actions. He wanted to respect her wishes, yet his heart ached more and more with each day he kept away. He was beginning to realise that the most foolish thing he had done, was deny his feelings for her. He'd shown her everything, up to his rotten core, and she hadn't looked away. Kakashi loved her for that. Kakashi loved her. But wasn't it too late?
The investor event came along. It was to be held in the assembly halls, with live music, drinks and dancing. Although not entirely willing, the village shinobi put on their best clothes and their brightest smiles, to fulfil their duties for their homeland. Even if those duties were to charm the wealthy businessmen and women, whose money they needed.
Y/N wore her best yukata to the event, her hair neatly pinned back and with flowers tucked in it. As she walked into the brightly lit room, she was met by a dazzling Gai.
"Y/N, you're a vision of spring and beauty!" He said, taking her hand in his. "With your good looks and mine, we're sure to get some hearts racing tonight! And some money in our pockets" He whispered the last statement and winked at her.
She giggled at his usual flamboyance and allowed him to lead her away towards some guests. She was listening to a boring conversation between two merchants and politely smiling along, when she spotted Kakashi walking in. He wore a dark grey hakama over his kimono, which made him stand out in the crowd. Her first thought was how handsome he looked, but she quickly scolded herself over it and instead motioned a wave, when he looked her way. To her surprise, Kakashi didn't respond, but quickly ducked and disappeared amongst the pool of people. She wondered if he maybe hadn't seen her.
As the night began unfolding, music started playing and couples came out on the dance floor. Suddenly, Y/N found herself swarmed with suitors, asking her to dance one after the other. Bound to her duty, she obliged the guests, but every time one of them spun her around, her eyes would seek out Kakashi. And without a doubt, every time her gaze fell upon his, he'd turn away.
A group dance was organised, where couples would join in and switch partners at different intervals. An older gentleman, who traded with ships (or so she was told) asked her to dance. She smiled sweetly and offered him her hand, despite feeling exhausted by this point. At least she'd stumbled upon a good dancer, as he expertly led and twirled her around.
Upon switching partners, she was pulled in by a familiar embrace. Kakashi held her tight, as he maneuvered them both swiftly along the dancefloor.
"He dances." She said, feigning surprise.
"Well, when the Hokage's wife drags you out, it's hard to refuse." Kakashi let out a slight chuckle.
She scoffed at that, the cheerful glint in her eyes betraying her true feelings. It was a relief to see him smile again.
"You've been avoiding me tonight." She said matter-of-factly.
Kakashi cleared his throat.
"I'm surprised you noticed with all the men throwing themselves at you." His voice sarcastic, yet strained.
"Does it bother you?" Her eyes widened in curiosity. She couldn't help but push on.
"Of course it bothers me." His sincerity surprised her. Usually with him, it was all cloak and dagger, so why the sudden reveal? She felt the familiar feelings of confusion and hurt rising up in her.
"You must know by now that none of that matters to me." She whispered, loosing the grip on her emotions somewhat.
"And why not?" His gaze intensely focused on her expression, trying to read it.
"Kakashi..." She hesitated.
"I want to hear you say it." He pressed further leaning into her ear, his voice just above a whisper.
Sensing the exhaustion take over, she felt like she was going to crack. It was too much, being so close to him, wondering if he was toying with her again.
"I... I can't do this!" Y/N pulled away from him, running towards the entrance. A few heads turned to look at Kakashi, eyes filled with curiosity. Kurenai ran over to him.
"What happened?"
"Nothing."
"I better go and check on her." The female jōnin looked concerned.
"No, don't. I'll go after her." He interjected, leaving the dance floor.
Once outside, he spotted her walking away in rushed steps.
"Y/N, wait!" He called after her, running to shorten the distance between them.
She stopped and turned towards him. When he reached her, he could see tears gleaming in the corner of her eyes.
"Wait for what, Kakashi? I can't keeping doing this with you. This back and forth, this game..." She trailed off, her voice shaky.
Kakashi reached his hand and gently wiped her wet cheek.
"Y/N, I've been a fool." Was the only thing he managed to say.
"What on earth do you mean?" She was still angry with him, an anger born out of hurt.
"Denying what my heart has been aching for, this whole time." His palm rested on her cheek, the way hers once had, when he'd shown her the sharingan.
The sorrow in her eyes turned to surprise, then to hope. She leaned into his hand, taking a step closer to him.
"And what is it that you've been aching for?" She asked softly.
Kakashi sighed.
"You know."
"I want to hear you say it." She echoed his words from earlier.
He watched her for a moment, taking in her beautiful, tear-stained face.
"You."
At those words, she closed the remaining distance between them, pulling him into a passionate kiss. Weaving her arms around his neck, his own wrapping around her waist, their bodies intertwined as their lips devoured each other. When they finally pulled back to take a deep breath, they were both smiling widely.
"Take me home, Kakashi." She whispered.
He took her hand in his and led her back, both hearts soaring at the feeling of surrender.
The Big Bad Wolf
Summary: Obito survives the fourth shinobi war, and with Kakashi's help, is sent to live in the forest surrounding Konoha. He's a prisoner in his home, the property warded so that no one can enter or exit without the Hokage's explicit permission.
After two years, Kakashi can't ignore the fact that his old friend is wasting away in his home. Thankfully, though, he finds someone (reluctantly) willing to help bring him back to health.
Also, I know that his hair turns white, but I'm keeping it black here. Annnd there are cell phones in this au. I'm pretty sure those are the only major changes I'm making.
Obito Uchiha x Fem!Reader
Warnings: single mother reader, slowburn, angst, canon violence, depression, Uchiha bullshittery, mentions of abuse, alcohol usage, sexual themes
Part I
Word count: 1266
Note: New WIP because my brain can't focus. This is incredibly self-indulgent, because I am a slut for Obito. I will be back on my other WIP soon, I promise. This came to me after I read a fic on AO3, although I can't remember the name.
The Hokage’s tower was intimidating. It was your first time stepping foot anywhere near it in years, and you wondered if it had somehow risen in height. You adjusted your button up and slacks, took a deep breath, and stepped inside.
You navigated the busy hallways swiftly, muscle memory kicking in when your brain wanted to give up. You found yourself in front of the door to the Hokage’s office in a flash, and knocked before you could psych yourself out.
“Come in,”
You opened the door and stepped through, eyes wandering around the room. It looked much the same as it had a few years ago and the familiarity eased some of your nerves. The man in front of you wasn’t necessarily an unfamiliar face, either, and his smile further calmed you.
“Y/n L/n, it’s been quite some time since I’ve seen you,”
You smiled politely at him from your spot near the door. “It has,”
He gestured you forward. “Come, sit,”
You settled yourself down in the chair across from him, and he folded his hands on the desk.
“Thank you for coming in today,”
“Thank you for having me, Lord Sixth,”
“Call me Kakashi,” He waved his hand.
You just managed to keep your disapproving look from fully forming on your face. “Yes, sir,”
He rolled his eyes playfully. It made you shift a bit uncomfortably. You had never been close to the man, and when you had known him, he had been much more serious. He seemed to sense your discomfort, and switched back to a more professional tone.
“So, you’re here for the personal assistant position, correct?”
You nodded.
“Before we continue, I would like to make you aware that this position is not as an assistant to me,”
You frowned, confused. Who would be so important that the Hokage himself would interview for them? Surely he was incredibly busy. It was clearly evident that the aftermath of the war was still weighing heavily on Konoha’s government, even two years later.
He continued, “A close friend of mine has been struggling, and I believe hiring him some help is the least I can do,”
You nodded, curiosity replacing the nerves that had lingered. He drummed his fingers on the desk, eyes cast aside in contemplation. After a moment of silence, he started again, “I suppose I should re-title the position,” His eyes slid to yours. “It’s more of a caretaker job,”
Now you were really confused. “What exactly would I be doing?”
“Cooking, housework, grocery shopping, etc,”
Your lips quirked up and you nodded. You would call yourself an expert in those things after the last two years you had had. “And what would the hours look like?”
“Monday through Friday, starting at 8:30am and ending when you finish your tasks. The position is salary,”
He was ticking off each of your boxes the more he spoke. But, after struggling to find a job that fit all your needs for the past six months, you were quick to hold back your excitement. You were tired of being disappointed when you either didn’t get it, or something just wouldn’t work.
“That sounds like a good deal to me,”
His eyes crinkled into his little half-moon smile. “I’m glad to hear it. I have to ask, what brings you here today?”
“My current job just isn’t a good fit, and I want something that feels more rewarding - like I’m making a difference… I wouldn’t be upset about a pay raise, either.” You half-shrugged.
Kakashi chuckled. “I hear you. What do you think qualifies you for this position? I know it’s a bit different than what I advertised, so don’t worry about taking a second to answer,”
You shook your head, a little smile on your lips. “I’m more qualified for this type of work than what you advertised, so I can answer easily.”
You straightened up in the chair. “Before the last six months, I was a stay at home mom. I handled every piece of housework, managed our finances, did the shopping for the three of us, and took care of my son. It’s almost second nature to me to manage a household now,”
Kakashi nodded. “I was wondering about the gap in your resume,”
You quirked a brow. “Are you telling me you didn’t do a thorough background check before bringing me in here?”
He smiled widely, a sparkle in his eye. “Now there’s the little chunin I remember,”
You smiled bashfully, tucking a strand of hair behind your ear.
“No, I have extensive investigations performed for each person before they enter this office for an interview. I like to see who is honest with me when I ask questions, though,”
You ignored the urge to roll your eyes. “Well, based on mine, how much of a chance do you think I have to get this job?”
He hummed. “Pretty high, I’d say,”
You perked up.
He tapped a tinger to his chin. “Actually, since you caught me, I think it’s only fair to offer it to you, if you want it,”
You blinked in surprise. “Really?”
He nodded, his face sobering quite suddenly. “Although I can’t divulge why at the moment, you are my first choice out of all of the applicants.”
You looked at him in bewilderment, but held your questions in. His eyes flickered around the room. He scratched the back of his head, and brought the smile back to his face.
“Starting pay is seventy-five thousand a year, would that be sufficient?”
It took you a moment to respond. Your head was spinning with the possibilities that would open up to you with that kind of money. The foremost thought in your mind, though, was: I won’t have to struggle anymore.
You finally managed a nod. “More than,”
“Perfect, how soon can you start?”
“Uhh, Monday, probably,”
He started to say something else, but you accidentally interrupted him with your next question. “Who am I supposed to be taking care of?”
Kakashi met your gaze with intensity. He searched your eyes for a long moment, and you tried so very hard not to shrink into yourself. After an eternity, he let loose a heavy sigh. His reaction was making your nerves rise back up at full force.
“Your.. ward, for lack of a better term, is.. Obito Uchiha,”
Your jaw dropped and you stopped breathing, your mind going completely blank. When your thoughts finally filtered in again, your first coherent thought was: So that’s the catch?
Why would you be his first choice for a war criminal’s babysitter? Kami, what would your family say if they found out just who you were working with? Despite your negative internal dialogue, you couldn’t help but think about the money. It would do you so much good, even if you only worked the job for a year or two.
You scrubbed a hand over your face in a jerky movement. It wasn’t much of a debate. You would benefit far more by taking the job than denying it. A sudden thought popped up - something that you should have thought of right off the bat.
“What if he tries to hurt me?”
Kakashi frowned, but his eyes were understanding. “He won’t. I wouldn’t have created the position if I thought he would try something.”
You nodded slowly. It tracked. He didn’t fight at the frontlines during the Fourth Shinobu War to put his people in danger. You knew he was a good man.
“Okay,” you said quietly.
“Okay?”
“Okay,” It was hardly more confident than the first.
“Alright, let’s go over the details then,”
(Back to Chapter 1, Chapter 3)
Word count: 2.1k
Summary (from part 1): A new shinobi joins the Konoha ranks and Kakashi finds himself inexplicably drawn to her. Quick Gai appearance in this chapter.
Warnings: none in this chapter!
Enjoy! ♡
-------------------------------------------------------
As the genin were competing in the first two trials of the chunin exam, Y/N found herself with more spare time than she desired. Wanting to avoid both thoughts of the gray-haired ninja, and another situation in which she'd have to resort to her kekkei genkai, she decided that developing her skills as a shinobi was the best way to pass the time.
She arranged sparring sessions with Gai, which had become a habitual thing for them now. He had been her first opponent, but also her first friend in the village, and their relationship grew as time went on.
She was getting her butt kicked during one such match, as it was strictly taijutsu, and Gai didn't hold back for her sake. She hit the ground for what felt like the hundredth time, when he extended his hand to help her up and suggested taking a break.
They sat on a fallen log in the clearing where they trained, Y/N took a sip of water, handing the bottle over to him.
"Is there something going on between you and Kakashi, Y/N?" Gai asked, wiping his mouth with his sleeve.
She took another sip without looking over at him. Finally, she spoke, trying to keep her voice as neutral as possible.
"What makes you ask that?"
"I've known my rival for a long time, I can tell he acts differently whenever you're around. I just wondered if perhaps the spring of love has blossomed between the two of you like the flowers of a young sakura tree." He smiled widely.
Y/N managed to stifle her giggle at those words. Give it to Gai to describe things with so much flare.
"We're just friends, that's all." She replied, recovering her seriousness. "We have a lot of things in common." She added.
"Well, in case something does happen between the two of you, I want you to know that I will be the happiest man alive. Seeing two of my friends soaring high in the skies of love, brings such joy to my youthful soul!" He pulled his fists to his chest in a dramatic reenactment of how he felt.
"Thank you, Gai." She smiled. "But nothing's going to happen between me and Kakashi, believe me." The smile slowly fading from her lips.
On her way home from training, she thought about Gai's words. If people were starting to notice something odd between them, she had to put their minds to rest. Moreover, she had to put her own mind at rest. Although she'd enjoyed the closeness she still shared with Kakashi and their talks, he'd made himself clear that it would go no further. Perhaps it was time to move on.
Y/N was just preparing to go to bed, when she heard a faint knock on the door. Not expecting anyone, she felt on edge when opening the door. To her surprise, a scruffy-looking Kakashi stood at her entrance.
"May I come in?" He asked, weary-eyed and somber.
"Of course." She made way for him to pass. "Have you come back from a mission?"
"Indeed." He sat in his usual chair, stretching his legs in front of him and groaning in discomfort.
"Are you hurt? Do you need help?" Her voice was steady, although worry came through it.
"No, nothing some rest can't fix. I just wanted to see you."
His unexpected honesty struck a chord, but she forced herself not to read anything into his words. Instead, she put the kettle on and took some dried leaves off her rack.
"Why don't you lie on the bed and I'll make us some soothing tea. But take that muddy vest off before you do!" She added, as Kakashi headed to her room, making him chuckle.
"Don't tell me you've never thrown yourself onto the bed straight after an exhausting day." He said, putting a pillow behind his head, as he got more comfortable. It still surprised him how at ease he had begun to feel in her space. He pushed the thought away, refusing to let his feelings take over. He'd indulged enough by coming here in the first place.
Y/N walked over with two steaming mugs in hand. She handed one of them to her companion and took a seat on a chair by the bed.
"You've been keeping busy these days." He noted casually. "You're always out training or taking on new missions."
"Are you keeping an eye on me?" She raised her brow at him.
"I'm naturally observant, that's all."
As much as she enjoyed his presence, her desire to climb on top of him in that moment was too much to bear.
"Do you mind if I make some remedies while we talk?" Keeping her hands busy could resolve some of the tension in her body. She got up and started pulling various tools out.
"Go right ahead." He sipped on his tea, while watching her careful movements.
A few hours passed in pleasant conversation. Mugs, long emptied, sat on her nightstand. Kakashi got off of the bed.
"Thank you for keeping me company tonight. I needed it."
They bid each other goodnight and he left. Y/N sighed into the empty space. This friendship thing was becoming increasingly more difficult for her. She prepared her bed for the night, a new resolve building in her.
The next morning:
She was walking out of the Hokage's building after taking on a short C-rank mission to keep her occupied during the day, when she crossed paths with a handsome jōnin heading inside.
"Hey!" She called after him, surprising herself with this forwardness. "You're Genma Shiranui, right? You're one of the proctors for the chunin exam."
"That's right. I know you, aren't you Y/N? Your team is competing in the exam." He spoke, a faint smirk lingering on his lips. She nodded in response.
"Any chance you could give me a hint on what else you've got in store for these kids?" She asked, a cheeky smile lighting up her face.
"That wouldn't be very fair to the other sensei, now would it?" He replied, matching her cheek.
"It was worth a try!" Y/N prepared to leave but he interrupted.
"I'll tell you what though, my tongue gets quite loose when I've got a drink in me. How about it then?"
He was indeed very handsome, she thought, especially when he smirked in that self-assured way.
"Why not." She said out loud. "I'm on my way to take care of some things, but I'll be free tonight?"
"Great." He nodded. "See you then, sensei." He winked at her and went into the building.
Yes, a pretty distraction like that was just what she needed.
Walking out of the staff lounge later that day, Kakashi passed two chunin he vaguely recognised as Izumo and Kotetsu. They were talking loudly and he couldn't help but overhear their conversation.
"Hey, did you hear Genma's got a date tonight?"
"So what! That guy's always got some date or another."
"Yeah, but this one's with that new sensei. You know, the really pretty one."
"Ah, fair play to the guy then."
Kakashi's heart tightened at the thought of Y/N out with that jōnin. But why shouldn't she date, he tried to banish the feeling before he could even give it a name. After all, wasn't he the one who rejected the possibility of something more between them? Frustrated with both the situation and himself, Kakashi decided the best remedy was to busy himself throughout the day, so he could keep his mind distracted.
Y/N came home with enough time to shower the dust off herself and get ready for her evening plans. It was rare that she got to step out of her jōnin clothes and into something more appealing, so she took the time to make herself look nice. Once ready, she headed over to their meeting spot. Genma stood outside the venue, wearing a navy blue turtleneck with trousers to match, his signature senbon between his teeth. He grinned at the sight of her.
"Shall we?" He said, moving the curtain aside, so she could walk in.
They sat next to each other at the long bar, Genma sneaking looks at her, as they ordered their drinks. Y/N felt flushed with excitement. She couldn't help but notice the difference from her times spent with Kakashi. This felt both less secure and lighter at the same time.
They got to talking, the awkwardness quickly dissipating. Genma was very charming when he wanted to be, but he was also a good listener and showed genuine interest in what she was saying. Y/N found herself comfortably enjoying his company.
The more time passed, the more forward they became, flirting with each other and making remarks on the other's good looks. Occasionally, Genma would place a hand on her lower back, or his knee would touch hers and remain there, as if to test the waters. Y/N didn't mind, in fact, she encouraged it, feeling emboldened.
A few drinks later, they were both slightly tipsy and flushed with desire.
"It's getting late." She mentioned when the conversation had dwindled. "I should head back."
Genma looked at her, trying to read her expression. He was met with a cat-like smile that told him everything he needed to know.
"Can I walk you home?" He asked, ever the gentleman.
So, they walked, or rather swayed towards her place, locking arms whenever one of them tripped, giggling and talking loudly. Both of them too tipsy to sense the shadow that followed them close by.
Reaching the flat, they stumbled inside giggling, shushing each other, as to not wake the neighbours.
"I'll put some tea on to sober us up a bit." Y/N said cheerfully, letting go of Genma's hand, without even realising she'd been holding it for the last few minutes. In the fog of her drunken mind, she made a note of how quickly the intimacy between them had grown.
Genma looked around her flat, stopping at her bookshelf, trying hard to make out the titles, his vision blurry. When she'd put the kettle to boil, Y/N joined him where he stood, stopping awfully close to the handsome jōnin. He turned to look at her, his glazed eyes focusing on her lips, but before either of them could make a move, a knock on the door pulled them back into reality.
Surprised by the unexpected intrusion, she went to open it. And who did she find at the entrance, but the root of her recent troubles?
Kakashi stood in his usual slouched pose, a smile visible under his mask.
"Hello." Without waiting for a response, he made his way inside, brushing past Y/N.
"Oh, Genma, I didn't know you were here!" His tone was nonchalant, like they'd just bumped into each other in the staff room. "Sorry to interrupt, I think I might have left my book here last night." He said, putting a slight emphasis on his words.
Y/N stood completely stunned, still holding the door open, unable to comprehend what was happening. She watched in astonishment as Kakashi headed towards her bed with the obvious familiarity of someone who'd been in the flat many times, and crouched down to look under it.
"Hm. I think it might have fallen out of my vest when I took it off... Ah, there it is!" He pulled out a crinkled copy of Icha Icha and stuck it in his pocket. "You know me, can't go to sleep without my novels." He casually laughed, glancing at Genma, who looked like he'd sobered up rather quickly.
"Well, I'll leave you two crazy kids alone. Don't stay up too late. Goodnight." With a wave of his hand he was gone out the door.
Y/N finally regained some of her composure and turned to a very solemn looking Genma.
"I honestly have no idea what that was all about." She forced an apologetic smile on.
"Listen, I don't want to step on any toes here." He hesitantly spoke.
"You're not! Kakashi was here last night, but we just talked! I don't know why he needed to come in like that..." She blurted out, trying to do damage control.
"Look, Y/N, tonight's been great, and you're honestly very attractive, but this whole situation seems a little too complicated for me. Plus, I really don't want to get into Kakashi's bad books. That guy is terrifying."
Genma awkwardly remained in place for a moment, expecting her to say something.
"I think I had better go." He said, realising she wasn't going to.
Without waiting for a further response, he let himself out, closing the door behind him with a thud.
Author's note: Oh the angst!!! I swear the next chapter will be sillier and lighter, but there's a little treat in this one too. For anyone new - this is a reader self-insert, slowburn fic, but the reader has a pre-established past, which reveals itself along with the story. Looking like there'll be 5 chapters in total, unless my hand slips haha
Word count: 3.1k
Summary (from part 1): A new shinobi joins the Konoha ranks and Kakashi finds himself inexplicably drawn to her.
Warnings: mentions of blood and suicide
Enjoy! ♡
-------------------------------------------------------
She woke up in a foreign bed, with all her strength drained. The afternoon light was coming through the window.
It took all the energy she could muster to pull herself off the mat. As the cloud over her mind began to lift, it was filled with images of what had happened. The mercenary ninjas, Kakashi - trapped and then... She threw her bruised hands over her eyes.
"No... what have I done?!" She wept almost silently, coming apart at the seams. She'd made a terrible mistake, she should've never gone back to this life. And now, it could all go awry. When she'd finally managed to pull herself together, there was a faint knock on the door.
"Come in." She struggled to keep her voice from shaking.
The door slid open to reveal a grave looking Kakashi at the entrance. He kept his gaze downward cast as he spoke.
"I heard noise and assumed you were awake. How are you feeling?"
"Exhausted..."
Kakashi walked into the room, shutting the door behind him. He stood by the window, barely facing her.
"What happened? Where are we?"
"We're in the Sand Village. You collapsed and I carried you the rest of the way. The mission is complete."
Y/N remained silent for a moment, trying to put her thoughts in order. Suddenly, she was struck by an awful awareness.
"Those men... their bodies... if anyone were to find them, they could...they could realise it was me!"
"I burned their bodies." Kakashi's voice was low and cold.
Despite the relief of that knowledge, she felt the tears well up in her eyes again. But no, she would not allow herself to crumble. She was stronger than that, and she only had one choice. To tell the truth.
"You can't even look at me anymore, Kakashi. Are you that repulsed by me?" She spoke again.
At her words, he turned around forcefully, his dark eye locking in with hers, he looked angry and tired.
"Don't you understand?! I feel betrayed! This whole time, I had no idea who you were!"
"Please, just let me explain. I will tell you everything, I swear."
Kakashi shook his head, but remained in place. Y/N took the opportunity to speak, before he could change his mind and storm off.
"My clan, we possess the kekkei genkai to bend our own blood. If mixed with others', we can take our foes down in an instant. In the olden times, we were revered and respected, keepers of the peace. But as the clan grew, so did their thrist for power and riches. People from my clan sold themselves to the highest bidder, they fought wars on the wrong side, committed assassinations, we became feared and loathed for our kekkei genkai. We were deemed...unnatural."
"And your clan was hunted and killed for it. I've heard the stories. But there wasn't supposed to be any survivors remaining."
"My father, the last living member, escaped our village and started a new life. He married my mother and had me. They brought me up in secret, and when my ability became too difficult to maintain, he trained me in secret. But he was found out..." Y/N paused, taking a deep breath. Kakashi had leaned his back to the wall, avoiding direct eye contact.
"Found out by whom?" He asked, not lifting his head.
Y/N pondered her response. It was difficult to say his name out loud. After a moment, her voice came out, quiet, broken.
"Orochimaru."
Kakashi's whole body sprung up at the mention of that name.
"At first, he approached my father with a proposition. To take me on as his pupil in exchange for great power. By this point, word had spread about his betrayal of the Leaf Village and his dark dealings. My father knew he wanted me as a potential vessel, so he could use my kekkei genkai for his own purposes, so he refused. This angered Orochimaru and he swore to obtain our power by force."
"But that's impossible!" He interrupted.
"You of all people should know that's not true, Kakashi of the sharingan."
He involuntarily touched his covered eye at her words. They had never spoken about his history with Obito, but the rumours never ceased to float around him.
"I was given this, I did not take it." His voice was full of sorrow at the memory.
"Yes, but if it can be given, it can also be taken brutally away. Orochimaru has found a way to do this at the brink of one's death, by sheer force."
Kakashi's head fell solemnly.
"He went after my father first, he was relentless and strong. So my father did the only thing he could, before Orochimaru got to him..." she pasued. "...he killed himself."
Her words caught in her throat, her hands were shaking. She hadn't spoken this out loud in so long. The burden of her past, which she had carried for years, alone, in hiding, it was too much to bare facing it again.
Kakashi had his own demons to face at those words. Flashbacks of his own father's fate haunted him every day; seeing his body, the realisation of what he had done. He understood the heavy weight of what she was telling him, like few others could.
He let her collect herself, his exterior softening somewhat. He'd heard stories of her clan throughout his life. Of their ruthlessness and obsession for power. Their fate wasn't just a cautionary tale, they were viewed as beasts among men, and loathed for it. It was difficult for Kakashi to bring that image together with the woman he had come to know and care for. Was it possible that the stories were false? But no, hadn't he seen something in her eyes back there with the black ninjas? A certain hunger, a deadly fire. Could she be trusted?
"How did you escape?" He asked, unable to make any decisions yet.
"I faked my own death." She exhaled, summoning her strength to continue. "My father had managed to buy me the time needed to prepare. I made it look like I had drowned. And then I ran."
"Why did you come to Konoha and join our ranks? Why did you not remain in hiding? Surely, you must've known that something like this could happen!"
"I hid, for a long time! And in that time I saw so much suffering and indifference, so much blood and hurt. I have these abilities, I was trained as a shinobi, and to let things happen, things that I could put a stop to... I couldn't do it anymore! So, I made a decision, hoping that Orochimaru would never believe that I could be so close, so out in the open, even if he ever began to suspect I was alive."
They both remained silent for a moment. Y/N's heart was pounding so loudly, she was sure he could hear it. She broke the silence first.
"That's it. That's my story. I am at your mercy now."
Kakashi didn't respond immediately, weighing his response carefully.
"Does the Hokage know?"
"He does."
At that, he made a move towards the door. He stopped at the entrance with his back still turned to her.
"Rest. We'll head back in the morning."
Y/N was left in the room, her fate still uncertain. Would Kakashi accept her past and keep her secret? Or would he expose her to the ANBU, demand the Hokage shun her from the village? Or worse, deliver her to the people that wanted to see her clan erased from existance.
When she woke up early next morning, she'd regained some of her strength back. But her mental state was still shaky. She packed what few possessions she had and left the house.
Kakashi was waiting outside. They began their journey home in silence. Y/N would give anything to go back to their conversations from before. Despite her weighing concern, she couldn't help but feel some relief knowing that the truth was out in the open. Whatever happened next, at least she didn't have to hide from him anymore.
They walked this way for some time, keeping a calm pace. Now that the mission had been fulfilled, there was little danger threatening their return. When Kakashi finally spoke, his voice came out almost casual. There was just a slight hint of strain in it.
"I never said thank you for saving my life back there. It seems I owe you twice now." A faint smile lingered on his lips, hidden by his mask.
"Kakashi, you must know I would never do anything to harm a comrade. And I will always stand by your side." Her gaze intensely focused on him.
His silence hurt her more than she was ready to admit. Of course she knew things could never return to what they were, but she hoped he could accept her.
"I just need time, Y/N." He said, as if reading her mind.
It was a painfully slow journey, wrapped in a cumbersome silence. She forced herself to be patient and give Kakashi his space, only venturing to speak when required. They made camp during the night and she kept watch, although it wasn't necessary. She gazed at his sleeping figure and her heart broke at the thought that she might lose the little they had built so far. Now that everything was on the line, Y/N began to realise how attached she'd grown to the gray-haired ninja.
The next day they increased their speed, eager to get back to the village. In some ways, running through the trees, jumping and swinging from branches, brought relief to both of them, as it didn't allow for much conversation. They made good time this way, aiming to be back in Konoha during the night. Nearing the village, Kakashi made a sign to stop. He swung down from the trees, landing with a thud on the ground, Y/N following.
He stood facing her for a moment, hesitant.
"I will keep your secret. If the Hokage has deemed this plan acceptable, I won't be the one to challenge his decision."
"Thank you." She replied with sincerity.
Kakashi nodded, preparing to continue, but stopped at the sound of her voice.
"And us? Are we still friends?" There was so much hopefulness in her tone, which she didn't care to hide anymore.
"Yes. We're still friends." He said after a brief pause, but avoided looking at her.
Continuing on their path, Y/N was unconvinced.
Days passed and life seemed to return to normal. Y/N was back to training her team of genin, the memory of the unfortunate mission fading. The only thing that still weighed on her mind was her relationship with the copycat ninja. She was sure he was avoiding her, as she hadn't bumped into him since they had come back, only seeing him in the distance ocassionally. She dared not approach him directly, hoping that he'd eventually come round, if only she'd give him enough space. But it was becoming increasingly more difficult to do so.
When the chunin exams came around, Y/N confidently put forward all three members of team 8, although deep down she was concerned for them. She felt protective over those kids since the first day they trained together, and Iruka's speech hadn't helped to ease her anxiety. Hearing Kakashi's confident words, she was reminded of the way they used to speak; how they would argue on various topics and his ability to shift her opinion. All she wanted in that moment was to talk to him, to voice her concerns and have him soothe her.
After they had seen the Hokage, she waited for him outside and approached him for the first time since their mission together.
"Can we talk?"
"I've got some business to take care of." He replied, not unkindly.
Y/N was about to give up, regretting following her impulses, but he intervened.
"Tonight. I could swing by your place. That is, if you don't mind."
"Not at all. Tonight then." They seperated, her heart both excited and terrified at the prospect.
After handing team 8 their sign up sheets and delivering the news of the exam to her eager students, she returned home. She made a point of tidying her place and making herself look somewhat presentable, without trying too hard. After all, this was just two friends chatting, which was perhaps the best case scenario she could hope for from tonight.
When she heard his knock, her heart skipped a beat. She was almost annoyed at herself for being so affected by him.
"Sorry for being so late, things took longer than expected." As always the mystery man. She knew better than to ask what his business had been.
"Would you like some tea?" She asked, closing the door behind him and leading him into the kitchen.
It was strange being back here for the first time, since she'd patched him up. Kakashi felt unsure of his legs, so he took a seat in one of the chairs.
"Perhaps something stronger, if you have it."
She smiled, turning away from him and pulling a bottle of sake from one of the cupboards. She produced two small cups and placed one of them in front of him, filling it up. He drank it in one big gulp, without looking up, putting it forward to be filled up again.
"Long day?" She asked, obliging him.
"Long life." He sighed.
"You've been avoiding me, Kakashi." She took a sip from her own cup, her eyes cast downwards. Her expression was calm, she'd given up on waiting around for him to make up his mind.
He stared at her with his one visible eye, pondering his response. With resignation, he decided to be truthful.
"You're right. I've been finding it difficult to face you since we returned from the Sand Village."
"But you agreed to come here tonight."
"The truth is, Y/N, I found myself missing this. I thought I could get over the feeling if I stayed away, but it has persisted. I've come to... value your company more than I expected." Kakashi searched her face for a reaction, but her features remained the same. Only her eyes lifted to look at his, a certain glint in them, or so he thought.
"Does this mean you can come to terms with who I am? The people I come from?"
"The more I know you, the more I want to try." Her hand was resting on the table by her cup and he wanted nothing more than to place his own on top of it. But something in him wouldn't allow his body to move.
"I'm so worried about the chunin exam. I don't want to see any of these kids get hurt." She sighed, glad to speak her thoughts out loud.
Kakashi leaned back into his chair, feeling the ease of being in her presence take over him like it used to.
"Hurt is part of this life they have chosen." He started. "I know what I said to Iruka, but truth be told, I worry too. Perhaps, we don't give them enought credit, they have proven to be more resilient than most."
The conversation went on like this for some time. They kept drinking sake until their cheeks warmed and their tongues loosened. Kakashi dared to ask more about her past, returning her honesty by answering her own questions in more detail than ever before. He told her about Obito and Rin, about his great shame and his many regrets. He surprised himself by talking so much about his own past. He was glad to be met with understanding, rather than the usual pity or shock that followed him around. All the cards were on the table and they were both revealing their broken and twisted lives to one another.
"I've never told anyone these things." He sighed, feeling lighter than he had in years.
"I'm glad you could tell me." Her hand moved to rest on top of his, the same thing he had wanted to do earlier. Her skin was warm, he could feel the calluses on her palm, a reminder of the difficult shinobi life they had both chosen. Was it possible that it didn't have to be so damn hard and lonely all the time?
For once, the usually careful in calculating his every move jōnin, stopped thinking and just let his body move for him. His other hand gently grabbed her forearm, pulling her into him. Met with no resistance, he closed his eyes, pulling his mask down and parting his lips to clash with hers. He embraced her, holding her ever so close, their bodies leaning into one another. She felt so soft and tender in his arms, for a second he forgot anything and everything that had happened before this moment.
When their lips finally parted, they remained close, starring into each other. Y/N's head was spinning, she felt his coal eye bore into her soul like the first time he had looked at her. She felt vulnerable, yet she wasn't afraid. Seeing his face fully exposed, he was more beautiful than she had imagined.
Suddenly, Kakashi's mind was flooded with a myriad of emotions. He pulled back sharply and stood up, leaving a distressed Y/N behind.
"Kakashi, what's wrong?" She spoke hurriedly.
"I can't do this." He refused to turn back and look at her.
"Do what? What do you mean?"
"Y/N, I can't be this person for you. You heard about my past. Half of me is already dead. I can offer you friendship, but nothing more." His head fell, his body felt like lead. He pulled his mask back on.
"Please tell me you understand." He pleaded, still not looking at her.
Y/N stood motionless. Her instinct was to argue, to be upset, to make him change his mind. But deep down she knew her efforts would be futile. Because she did understand, better than she cared to admit. After all, wasn't she herself only a ghost in this life. But with him, she had felt like she'd had a chance at happiness. Perhaps having his friendship would be enough. It sure was better than the agony of the last few weeks. She sighed.
"Friends then." Y/N replied, forcing a smile.
Kakashi finally dared to look at her, his gaze focusing on her reddened lips for a moment. He shook himself off and crinkled his eye in a small smile.
"I promise I won't avoid you again. We can try returning to normal."
Y/N nodded, although she knew things between them had changed forever.
"I should go, let you get some rest. There are big days ahead of us. Goodnight, Y/N." With that, he was gone and they were both alone once more.
