Southern Dutchess Toastmasters: Meeting Minutes: July 15, 2024

Lizdely Garcia led us as our Toastmaster for the evening. The theme of the meeting was dining out in the Hudson Valley and Lizdely gave us many great ideas for restaurants to check out in the area (including The Beast and Dutchess Biercafe, Cosimos, Lola’s Café, Kipp’s Tavern and McKinney & Doyle). 

We had two prepared speeches- both from the Engaging Humor Pathway. First, Devaki demonstrated the power of humor in the impromptu speech with 2 short speeches- one on 3 keys to a happy life (never compare yourself to anyone else, stay healthy and have reasonable expectations). Then Mekkat entertained us with tales of travels and tribulations when his daughter went away to college but wanted to come home frequently. 

Ruwan led us in Table Topics with his scary list of questions. They weren’t quite so bad this time. We heard about giving your life for someone else, doing the right thing, staying healthy, valuing family time, interacting with people and loving people. 

This week’s evaluators were Wanda for Devaki and Joe for Mekkat. 

Our word of the day was deference- meaning humble submission and respect.

When filmmakers Alex Jablonski and Kahlil Hudson decided to make a documentary about wildland firefighting, they wanted to get up close and personal with the men in the fireline. So they went there themselves.

“We actually became firefighters to make this film,” says Jablonski. “If we were going to do this story right, we needed to experience it with these guys, and just be there all the time.”

The resulting Wildland is one-part-redemption tale, one-part-coming-of-age story of a Type II Initial Attack handcrew in southern Oregon. Jablonski and Hudson stay out of the shot and capture the stories of their crewmates, many of whom face the arduous task of fighting wildfires—and reconciling the ghosts of their pasts and the promises of the future—for the first time.

An hour-long cut of Wildland kicks off the season premiere of PBS’s Independent Lens series tonight, October 29, at 10 P.M. Eastern/9 P.M. central. The full, 80-minute version can also be viewed in select theaters across the country, with a few screenings scheduled for January 2019.

A character-driven film, Wildland is devoted to firefighters’ inner journeys every bit as much as it is to their jobs. Viewers meet Charlie and Aiden, both bible college dropouts seeking raw experience. John’s in pursuit of redemption following a period of drug addiction. Their perceptive crew boss Tim leads by example—drawing on his years of experience fighting fires, as well as his own troubled past.

“Wildland” kicks off the new season of PBS’s Independent Lens on October 29

Filmed during two recent wildfire seasons, “Wildland” is a sweeping yet deeply personal account of a single wildland firefighting crew as they struggle with fear, loyalty, dreams, and demons.

What emerges is a rich story of working-class men — their exterior world, their interior lives, and the fire that lies between.

Directed and produced by Alex Jablonski and Kahlil Hudson, “Wildland” kicks off the new season of Independent Lens on Monday, October 29, on PBS.

Every summer, the American West burns. As climate change has increased, average temperatures have risen, resulting in a sudden increase in both the frequency and intensity of wildfires.

Inside each of these fires are small crews who work to contain them by hand, using shovels, pickaxes, and methods that haven’t changed in 60 years.

With a lifelong admiration for those who do this dangerous work, filmmakers and native Westerners Jablonski and Hudson went through firefighting training with the men in the film in Grants Pass, Oregon, a sleepy mountain town.

Each firefighter has come to this work for personal reasons — for some, it’s a need to test themselves or a desire for adventure and purpose; for others, it may be the job of last resort after time in prison or a lifetime of addiction.

The cinematography for the fishing documentary Low & Clear is quite lovely and made the film worth viewing even though I have no interest in watching men fish or hearing them talk about their peevish fishing competitiveness.  Also it's a short film.   I thought it could have been shorter, but so often people insist on having films a certain length at least to count as a feature... but sometimes I think there's really not a feature film length story.  This was that kind of film... but nature is timeless and so I could watch sky and river and lake and mountains for quite some time. I watched this with my sweetie, who napped through part of it and still declared that it was too long.  I think that about sums it up for me as well. It's won awards... including Audience Award at SXSW, so it's evident that this film struck a chord with a lot of people in ways it did not strike in me.  The film world's like that.
