Nicki Minaj’s The Pinkprint Era (+No Frauds)

this is my first #PrettyHeiressDiaries post. as i’ve previously stated, this series is going to be me diving into my fav muses and celebs and dissecting what i can take from these lovely ladies. this blog will focus on Nicki Minaj’s branding from 2014-2017 roughly. + a few Queen era looks.

The Pinkprint Era Style Elements:

the pinkprint was alter ego free, and a return to hiphop and r&b for nicki. meaning she was highly stripped of the campy pop rap star we had come to know. it was chic DOWN. think collector barbie vs the harajuku barbie. don’t mistake me though, onika was still very in touch with her cutesy girly side. there was a balance of sexy and chic with a few drops of cute. and this is why the pinkprint era is my absolute favorite, with her looks being a standard i follow for a lot of my looks.

nicki’s iconic black barbie insta selfies, wearing real hair or natural extensions(often textured ponytails and blowouts), minimal makeup and natural beats 🎀

No Frauds Era Style Elements:

after the pinkprint era was dying down and nicki had become the victim of “the nicki hate train,” her style was still reminiscent of pinkprint. but i would say her branding shifted from the demure somewhat sweetheart to more of an unapologetically bad bitch. this is marked as the “no frauds era” (the time between pinkprint and queen)

glamorous gowns, grandiose blingy bodysuits and adornments, continuing from the pinkprint aesthetic, she’s still wearing natural glams and hairstyles 🎀 +

latex catsuits, lacey looks, pink as seen in the paper magazine cover and the motorsport video 🎀

literally queen couture (tiaras, headpieces, and maximalist furs), the subtle return of the barbie chain, 40 inch “you b*tches can’t even spell prague” naomi/cher hair 🎀

So What Can We Learn?

Nicki’s style has never been anything short of ultra femme and makes it clear she’s not afraid to take up space and your attention.

As her branding and look shifts through these eras, it’s as if she’s becoming more aggressive with the her fashion to speak to the public.

During The Pinkprint Era, she said “Look, I can put the pink wigs and rainbow paint away and still capture attention while making quality work. Respect me.”

The No Frauds Era saw her evolve into a more flashy Nicki while taking hints of her past looks to say “I AM the greatest, you will NEVER top me, and I can remind you who I am.” Note the Barbie chain while also dressing like modern day royalty.

Nicki Minaj is a highly polarizing figure in pop culture but that should not stop us from acknowledging the cultural resets she’s delivered us in the fashion and beauty industry. When she said “I got all these girls wantin’ to be Barbie Dollz,” it wasn’t just a line, ITS TRUE. So many influential girls on instagram look like either Nicki, Kim K, or Madison Beer, just to name a few. The girls have taken a heavy note from the colored hair, bussdown middle part inches, bulky chains, all while trying to maintain an untouchable level of HYPERFEMININITY. An actual BLACK BARBIE.

Oh dang, I did forget to talk about what I liked! 😅

It was absolutely wonderful. I had a great view and it felt surreal seeing them relatively close up (or as close as one can be without standing in the floor section)

Doyoung blew me away. I wish I could share videos. He's my sister's bias, so she managed to get basically all of his best notes. He definitely showed off his musical theater skills and I could not be happier 😂 Hearing him in particular was beautiful though because the backing track at their last show was too loud and it drowned him out. At this one, it was perfect. And I had protective earplugs in, so any extraneous noise from the crowd was filtered out and his voice was amplified even further. Overall, I could hear each member very very clearly and they all made a strong effort to sing as best as they could. Especially Jungwoo. He's never been a strong singer, but he pushed through it anyway and I loved that. It must be hard having to cover parts that he never sang in the original recordings, and Jaehyun and Taeil have big shoes to fill. He did well!

Yuta's energy was infectious and he rivaled Taeyong at points - and what I mean by that is that he brought the appropriate amount of intensity. No one can match Tae one-to-one but it seemed like Yuta was specifically chosen to help embody that missing energy. His love of Rock music and his rockstar-esque aura made him perfect for that role and I couldn't imagine anyone else doing it. He was often the Center. Out of nearly everyone, Yuta got the most screams from the crowd

Johnny was given the most attention and responsibility he's ever been given, lmao. It was nice to see him in his element after years of relative neglect (neither good nor bad. His exposure throughout 127's career was always appropriate given his level of talent. He's a decent singer but a very subpar rapper and there's historically never been any real reason to have a strong spotlight placed upon him. This is coming from the perspective of a lifelong hiphop fan who's spent years intimately engaging with local rap scenes. In my eyes, he is a low tier amateur at best. But do not get me wrong, I am beyond happy for him! I hope my criticism doesn't obscure that fact

Mark is Mark and Haechan is Haechan. I have little to say about them because you and I both know they do their best to bring their best at all times. They've always given 1000% when I've seen them. Regarding 2Dongs, it was heart-warming to hear and see so much collaboration between the two. I didn't get to experience much of that last time. Their voices pair well together and I teared up during Gold Dust (mostly due to Doyoung. He tugs at my heartstrings constantly. I can't even listen to Youth all the way through without crying at some point, lol)

One of the most heart-warming parts of all though was seeing and hearing the love expressed for Jaehyun and Taeyong whenever they came on screen or whenever the members mentioned them. During Lemonade for example, instead of letting any of the members say his iconic opening part, they flashed a recording of him saying it on screen, and the stadium erupted. The same happened during Intro: Wall-to-Wall. And at the very end of the show, they closed it with a clip of Jaehyun winking at the camera. It was very sweet and made me smile because Jaehyun is my bias. And speaking of biases, no. There were no bias wreckers tonight! However, Doyoung posed the most threat. Ahaha!

Despite everything I told you about during my previous Asks, absolutely none of it prevented me from enjoying myself. They were moreso details I noticed but had zero influence on how much fun I was able to have 🌟

Now, that's a review! Thank you, it was an interesting read (everyone knows I've never been to an NCT concert. To any k-pop concert, really. And 127 even came to my hometown once. Zero luck.).

Good to know Yuta delivered. I don't remember who originally sings/dances what, so I don't notice who covers whose part with the exeption of the most remarkable (I didn't even realise at first Do got Jae's part in Lemonade, lmao, shippers had to point it out for me). I'd like to know how neos decided on the parts, what was taken into consideration, were there fights over certain lines, etc.

Well, you brought it on yourself. Now I want to know your opinion about rapping skills of Tae, Mark, Jae, and Do (lols, lets change it to his potential).

Also, I don't have that many Jaehyun-biased people here. Why him? What was the moment he hooked you?

BPP I'm starved for performance energies like I get from BTS. JK's live show yesterday made the feeling more acute cos all I could think was how much better it would've been with 6 other BTS members. I wonder if you understand my feeling. Are there groups that give you similar performance feeling to BTS?

There's no other group like BTS when it comes to performance synergy, energy, and charisma. In my opinion. That's one key ingredient in the secret sauce that sets BTS apart from other groups. They really are the best, and I'm saying this to help calibrate your expectations. But this also doesn't mean all the other groups are shit lol.

If you're looking for a solid dance and performance-driven group, Enhypen is one of the only groups that's worth a look.

I started paying real attention to Enhypen when I heard Pass the Mic and realized they were the first k-pop group to make a song in the Chicago Drill genre. The song itself I'm not a huge fan of (I don't like Ni-ki's rap verses and I think some of the lyrics are a bit cringe), but as far as misses go, this is the only one in their discography. And I still appreciate how drill was incorporated into the song. Also, the choreography is top tier, like every other choreography in their repertoire.

Enhypen is a 7-member group under Be: Lift - HYBE, and it's the first full concept group under HYBE - their concept being a vampire coming of age odyssey. Basically, all the members are vampires and I'm impressed by how consistently this theme is incorporated into their music, styling, lore, MVs, even stage personas without it seeming contrived or cringe.

The members are Jungwon (leader and my bias), Heesung, Sunghoon (bias), Jay (bias), Jake, Sunoo, and Ni-ki (maknae and main dancer). Every member that isn't my bias is my bias wrecker lol.

Honestly, Enhypen should be a lot bigger than they are, because every single one of their performances are, and I'm not saying this lightly, iconic. I'll link a few below and you'll see what I mean. I know the reason they aren't more known is because they don't have a rapline, but the group is beyond talented with a professional figure skater, a dance prodigy, several athletes and one former trainee peer with TXT, all in the group. Their music has roots in rock, hiphop, and EDM but not the 'noise k-pop' type.

Personally, I like their music a lot and feel it's easily some of the best in the entire 4th gen. Because Enhypen is a HYBE group, of course their dance skills, energy and synchronization are best in class. I've seen them in concert once and seen most of their recorded performances (comeback shows, Studio Choom, M studio, etc) and I'd honestly rank them behind only TXT in terms of performance skill and storytelling.

Blessed Cursed - the song and choreo is in my top 10 for all of 4th gen

The infamous Bite Me performance - with this one alone they made history for not just 4th gen, but arguably for all boy groups.

Upper Side Dreamin' - is criminally underrated and I know why but it doesn't make it any less painful.

Drunk-Dazed - the entire thing is good but the outro seals the deal.

Anons I hope this answers your questions. Enhypen will be coming back on November 17th with Orange Blood - their 5th EP. I'm personally looking very forward to it. The boys are just completing the 1st leg of their FATE world tour (all I've heard are rave reviews) and will immediately shift right into promoting the EP. They are working hard and if you like their work, I'd say this is a group worth supporting.
