After 99 individual polls with almost 200 characters from Star Wars, one sapphic rare pair has emerged victorious! Congratulations to Morgan Elsbeth / Ahsoka Tano! 💝 This ship was introduced in The Jedi, Season Two Episode 13 of The Mandalorian, and has been tugging along since November 27 2020. From those who have been shipping them for years to everyone who just learned about the pair, Sapphic Star Wars appreciates you taking part in our tournament!
The prize for winning is a small fic and art piece being created by the moderators for the ship; it may take us a couple of months to publish (Femslash February has been keeping us busy!) but the works will be published to this blog once completed.
We hope everyone had fun, regardless the numbers. Whether your ship was out in round one or didn't make it in, we still want to hear about it! Please keep writing, drawing, editing, and sharing sapphic content- from the smallest of fanon ships to the biggest of canon relationships. This blog will be here to reblog and cheer you on! Feel free to tag us in anything you would like to see featured 💘
Want to see more sapphic content? Check out the new @swsapphics-ao3feed that is being worked on to post + reblog all sapphic fics set in the Star Wars universe! It is still a work in progess, but you are welcome to tag any of your new or old sapphic fics with their @ to have it picked up into the queue! There are so many amazing events coming up this year too: Velcinta Week, Satine Week, NiteArmor Week, Jyn Appreciation Week, and more! Check out our pinned post for updates.

Speaking of positivity, what are the things that made you interested in Rebelcaptain and Rogue One? What was the thing that made you fall for this movie and the characters? ☺️
well, to be honest I wasn't much of a Star Wars fan at first, in fact I hadn't seen a single movie until I was 22. me and the fam were doing a marathon at new year's at my dad's insistence and that was my first introduction to the franchise. although being on tumblr, I did know a little about Rogue One and I knew they would all die but I didn't expect it to affect me like that. I enjoyed the original trilogy a lot as well, more than I thought I would initially, but Rogue One was a complete surprise because of how much I loved it.
I also knew Jyn and Cassian were a couple people shipped, in fact one of my dear mutuals at the time really liked them, and since I trusted her opinion I already kinda had my eye on them to see if I was feeling it too. so you could say I went into it with a slight bias, but I'll say, it wasn't really until the Eadu argument that something truly clicked and I knew I was gonna have to look up some fics later. tbh I didn't even know if they would be canon or not so I fully expected them to kiss in the elevator and I was pretty surprised when they didn't (but not necessarily unpleasantly so).
I can't really explain why Rebelcaptain stuck with me so much though, I mean there are a lot of ships I temporarily get obsessed with, spend a few weeks binging a bunch of fics, then get it out of my system and move on. I honestly kinda expected it'd be the case with them too at first, but nearly six years later and I'm still here so... clearly something about them grabbed me. I mean don't get me wrong, it's not completely unexplainable because they have a bunch of tropes and elements I really dig in a couple so it makes sense, but also I think there's something deeper instinctual to it? like that sounds really cheesy but something just clicked, and idk how to explain it other than the ship chooses you, you don't choose the ship.
I also just really love tragedies and the idea of what could have been in a better life fascinates me. I often find that if a couple has a happy ending, I lose some of my interest for them afterwards but if they don't, I'll pretty much never let it go (this is kinda how I got sucked back into the destiel hole in 2020 after nearly five years of moving on from them). it's ironic because I wish Jyn and Cassian were able to be happy and have a life together, but I'm also not quite sure I would have been quite as invested in their relationship if they did. and I think that goes for the whole movie. seeing ordinary people from the sidelines of the story do extraordinary things... it always interests me more than the big heroes of the story. and I loved the slightly darker tone of the movie, it felt more grounded. tbh it just hit all of my sweet spots, what can I say?

I'm this close to finishing the first draft of my rebelcaptain fencing AU... yes, I know I've been saying that since NaNoWriMo 2020. My new year's resolution for 2023 is to finish and post it!
In the meantime, here's a brief summary, a link to the snippet from chapter one, and a snippet from chapter two.
Description: A rising star in youth fencing, Jyn Erso was once on track to become an Olympic-level athlete. But then, age 16, she quit unexpectedly. Her break from fencing unraveled her life. Three years later, she still refuses to discuss the subject, even with her father, a former Olympic medalist, and her best friend, Bodhi, who’s just returned from competing in the Olympics. It’s fine, it’s working – until she meets Cassian Andor, the kindest, most interesting person she’s ever met. Except for one problem: he’s also an Olympic-level fencer.
Excerpt from chapter two:
Jyn crosses her arms and waits. She’s elbow to elbow with strangers in the crowded cafe she and Bodhi chose for their weekly lunch. It’s not normally this popular, but it seems the dreary weather has convinced everyone and their mother that a cup of soup sounds quite nice.
Sighing, she glances over her shoulder, towards the filled seating where Bodhi has aggressively commandeered a table. He waves when she catches his eyes. She smiles back, but then looks past him, at the gray sky and gathering water droplets on the windows.
The days trudge along, minutes dragging like hours. It’s been two weeks since she scampered like a coward from Cassian’s home, from a well-cooked meal, from hope and possibility. Sometimes, she thinks she sees him passing on the street or in the hallway, and she ducks into an alcove or a classroom. Saw would be ashamed. That thought does nothing to help, merely reminds her why she’s in this mess in the first place.
“Order for Erso!”
She jolts back to the present, sees an employee place their order on the counter: a tray for Jyn’s meal, a tray for Bodhi’s, and two drinks. If only Bodhi hadn’t needed to stake out a table; now she’s stuck trying to balance it all.
“You seem like you’re carrying a lot.”
Turning, she sees her English professor. “Hi, Professor Malbus. My friend went to save a seat.”
He nods. “Chirrut’s doing the same.”
“Well, it’s good to see you.” Jyn moves towards the seating area, but her professor keeps talking.
“While you’re here,” he starts. It sounds ominous, and it occurs to Jyn that had her food been called just twenty seconds earlier, perhaps she could have avoided this conversation entirely. “I wanted to talk to you about your last paper.”
“Oh.” Yeah, bad feeling justified.
“I appreciate you handing it in early,” he says. The writing takes her mind off things. “But it seems a little rushed. You still have time before the deadline, if you want to take another stab at it.”
His phrasing pierces her a little more pointedly than he probably realizes. Am I really this sensitive to it after all this time? What doesn’t help is that she’d actually spent quite a bit of time mulling over that assignment.
“Of course, professor.”
He frowns. “I’m sorry — you’re busy. Let’s talk it over in my office hours next week.”
“Thanks.”
Her steps might be a little heavier as she leaves the counter area and winds her way through the seating, but at least she’s pretty sure they wouldn’t qualify as outright stomping.
At least this day couldn’t possibly get any worse.
Midway through the seating, she realizes she has no idea where she’s going, and she looks around again for Bodhi.
And instead, she finds Cassian.
Never think it can’t get worse, she reminds herself.
In fact, Cassian is, for some reason, talking to Bodhi, so at least she’s succeeded in locating her final destination.
She stands there staring for far too long, other customers bumping past her, until Cassian glances away from Bodhi just for a second, just long enough to accidentally meet her gaze.
She wonders if she looks as caught off guard as he does.
Bodhi follows Cassian’s gaze. “Oh, finally!”
His words jumpstart her mind, and she covers the remaining distance between them.
During that time, her mind screams, “How the hell do you two know each other!”
But instead, she says, “Sorry for the wait.”
“It’s fine,” they both answer her, although Cassian’s sounds a little less sincere.
All three of them frown. Bodhi and Cassian glance back and forth between each other and her in confusion.
Slightly faster on the uptake — she did have a split second advantage — Jyn places Bodhi’s food in front of him, all the while avoiding the intensity of Cassian’s gaze. “So,” she says, staring at her seat but not getting into it, “how do you two know each other?”
“I — we — what?” Bodhi says. He shakes his head as if to shake his thoughts loose. “He’s our bronze medalist in epee.”
Jyn’s eyes widen, but it shouldn’t be that shocking. She had remembered he’d taken gold at that Junior Olympics all those years ago. Just because she left fencing behind didn’t mean everyone did. Bodhi, after all, had stuck with it.
Before she can respond, Cassian says, “Wait, how do you two know each other?”
Both Jyn and Bodhi hesitate. And then Bodhi sends Jyn a look that somehow manages to be both apologetic and defiant, and says, “We used to train together under Saw Gerrera.”
Cassian meets her wide-eyed gaze with his own. “You’re… Jyn Erso?”
Sighing, she settles into the seat next to Bodhi. “Yeah.”
“Fuck.”
“Wrong f-word.”
His gaze bores into hers, like he’s trying to figure her out. She thinks — she hopes — that maybe he has enough information to understand why she ran, since she hasn’t been able to find the words to explain it.
“Well…” he finally says. “I should go.”
“No one’s going anywhere,” Bodhi says, and they both jerk guiltily toward him, “until we get to the bottom of this.”
That wasn’t the line, Jyn thinks inanely. But Bodhi thinks as fast as either of them, maybe faster, and apparently has no need to ask the same question a third time.
When he doesn’t continue, Jyn says warily, “There’s no … bottom… Bodhi…”
“Yes, there is, and you both are stuck in it.”
She looks down at her food, pokes her salad with her fork.
“It’s fine,” Cassian says. “You don’t need to—”
“Sit!”
Startled into compliance, Cassian sits. Despite everything, Jyn smirks. Cassian, it would seem, is less familiar with Bodhi’s determined “I will aggressively logic you into happiness” routine. It really only works because disappointing him is literally the worst feeling in the world, worse even than losing a fencing bout had been, once upon a time. And that’s really saying something because she wasn’t the most gracious loser.
“You’re miserable,” he starts, pointing at Jyn with his own fork, “because you haven’t seen that photographer chef since that date two weeks ago. You know, the one where you were all, ‘this is the best date I’ve ever been on’…”
“Whoa.” Jyn’s eyes dart nervously between Bodhi and Cassian. “I didn’t say it like —”
“And you’re miserable,” Bodhi says, turning to Cassian, “because the last date you went on, two weeks ago, the awesome writer undergrad you met left early and hasn’t returned your calls.”
“If she’s not interested,” Cassian says, without looking up from the table, “that’s not her fault.”
Jyn winces like he just thrust his sword into her heart.
Of course, it would seem that she’d struck him first.

Jyn's Music Share #7
Life has gotten busy with work and my other priorities, so I'm making Music Share no longer weekly.
I rediscovered a song this week - Guardian by Æther Realm [YouTube Link]. I cannot exactly remember when I discovered this song, but I know it was on repeat in Fall 2020. I was at my lowest point with my mental health and felt so alone. I will talk more about this time in an infodump post to come [Jyn add a link here], but I held on for hope of my own Guardian. This week when I heard this song, I realized I have her in my life right now... thank you darling, I will love you forever and I will be your Guardian too 💜🩷🩵
"I will be your guardian from loneliness
Feel my love surround you
Share your burden I will carry it
A refuge all around you"
(Guardian, Æther Realm)

Hello RebelCaptain shippers! ♥
Following our Valentine Fic Rec Week, we are launching the first RebelCaptain May the Fourth Visual Art Rec Week! The event will run from April 28 to May 4 and is a chance for people to celebrate the visual artists in this wonderful community! Given the risk for reposting with any event like this, we are adding this extra caution: people who repost others’ original work will be: 1) not reblogged, 2) reported to the original artist, 3) blocked by @therebelcaptainnetwork, no exceptions.
You can link to multiple works in the same post, and feature as many artists as you want per day.

RC Rec Week Day 3
[reminder that the overarching theme of my recs this week is lesser-known stories]
Romance
This was the hardest theme of all! I have so many favourites for this ship I had to be absolutely ruthless or this list would be 500 stories long. In the end, I went with two writers whose overall quality is so high that I could’ve recommended any of their stories at random. If you like these, please check out more/all of their work!
if all my words are gone (to waste away in the unknown) by @ladytharen [T, 1500 words]
Did I mention I love reunion stories? This one has an edge of angst (another common quality in my likes) as Jyn’s squad took heavy losses and was unable to check in post-mission, so Cassian didn’t know whether she’d survived. The bittersweet backdrop makes their reunion all the more poignant.
“I’m never leaving for that long again,” she said, pulling his shirt over his head and muffling his response, retaking his mouth as soon as she’s able. All she’d thought about on her way out had been leaving him, and losing him, and the only consolation as she’d come back had been the thought of seeing him again. Bad feelings all around, and all the way through.
treading water by @lustfulpasiphae [M/E, 6000 words]
Simply put, this story is amazing. I'd sell my soul to be able to pack so much angst, characterization, relationship development, and an incredibly hot sex scene into just 6000 words of gorgeous prose.
He was genuinely confused. This, she supposed, was what came of never talking about their nightmares.
She took a deep breath that was trying very hard to pretend it wasn’t half a sob, as his hands cautiously stroked her upper arms.
“I’m sorry,” he said softly, but she could tell it was the sort of apology people gave when they had no idea what they were apologizing for.
Comedy
I had a hard time thinking of a rec for this theme, since I don't read a lot of straight comedy (though I do love stories with funny moments or good banter)... then I remembered these comics, which never fail to make me laugh.
@readordiebyemilyt's style is super cute & charming! Most of her Rogue One comics are about the whole team, or Cassian and K-2, but these two have some delightfully shippy subtext:
"Fine. If our pretend marriage fails, that's on you."
"here is another comic about dead people flirting"

2021 Year-End Fic Review
Taking advantage of @thinkingisadangerouspastime’s open tag! Thanks for giving me a reason to ramble, Amy 💞
Also, I’m only counting posted stories as complete! And I’m counting fics individually, since only my -Week series (2 out of 8) are technically complete.
How many stories did you complete?
This year, I completed 25! Most are oneshots, but two are multichap 🥰which is a first for me!
What is your total word count for the year?
144188 which is...wow 😂 that’s crazy!! And it’s all of my works except 11 (7 from 2020, 1 from 2019, 1 from 2016, and 1 posted in January of this year that I don’t count because it was written in 2019)
What fandoms did you write in this year?
Ooh well ATLA of course. Also Cobra Kai/Karate Kid, Ted Lasso, and the Flash! And I’m gonna try to sneak in something MCU-related in the last few days of the year (emphasis on TRY). There’s a Star Wars fic in the mix too!
Did you write more, less, or roughly about what you expected?
More, but honestly, that’s only because my fanfic impulse control is close to 0 😂
What’s your own favorite story of the year?
This one, because the CK time travel AU as a concept has grown and bloomed into something amazing 💞 it’s how I’m coping with whatever decisions they’ll make in S4
Though a close second is this Empath Daniel fic, because I’m really proud of the worldbuilding 🥰
I also love this Evil Zuko fic 😂 it’s so hard to rank my fics!
(The Bumizumi time travel AU will join my list of favorites soon! I just haven’t gotten to the really fun part yet)
What is your most underappreciated story of the year?
...okay I know I said I don’t count this fic...but screw it, I’m counting it. This Jyn & Leia fic was one I quite liked! It didn’t get the reception I was hoping for, which is a shame, because I definitely think there’s room for these two to be friends within the bounds of canon
Biggest fanfic-related disappointment of 2021?
Hmm...honestly not many? I mean, there’s this series (for Nina Shelley, my Ted Lasso OC) and also this one (for Morgan Wells, my Flash OC) but...not much has really happened in either series yet, so I’m not too surprised. It’s mostly just been set-up (or pay-off without build-up 😂)
Biggest fanfic-related surprise of 2021?
Honestly this Roykeeley & Jamiedani fic, which I actually posted yesterday for a Ted Lasso Secret Santa! It’s blown up more than I expected, and I’m so grateful for that 💞 it wasn’t my favorite fic, and I definitely felt a little imposter syndrome while writing it, but I’m glad people like it! Especially the recipient, which was definitely great to hear
This fic (exploring Barry’s grief in the wake of 3x1 aka Flashpoint) also surprised me–two authors in the fandom who I love dearly loved that fic, and were moved by it, which I’m glad to hear! I wasn’t sure if I was writing Barry and Harry (and grieving, generally) quite right, but I’m glad it worked
Something you’re looking forward to working on in 2022?
My OCs with series (Morgan and Nina) are gonna get their series fleshed out! Amelia, a new OC of mine for Marvel/MCU, is going to get her own series (again, 0 fic-related impulse control 😂)
Other than that...my CK and Bumizumi time travel AUs are steadily chugging along.
I’ve got a couple House of Anubis and Flash oneshots planned! One of the HOA ones is coming in early January (there’s a hard deadline for that one, which is why I can promise a posting date 😂)
Some more Spidey-related oneshots (NWH-related) are coming next year too! That movie really has me in a chokehold
Also...CK S4 fix-its are definitely coming, because I don’t trust this next season very much (some of the things I’m hearing make me nervous...like how they’re gonna treat Sam)
And I promise I’m getting back to that ATLA Soulmate AU at some point next year! Not sure when, but at some point. I’m proud of the worldbuilding for this series, and I wanna explore in the sandbox more! And if anyone wants to run with the worldbuilding, feel free (just make sure to gift it to me and give inspo credit, because I’d love to read it!)
Tagging: @seek--rest @robbykeeneslawyer @connorswhisk @blackaquokat @usaonetwothree @starstruckpurpledragon @squireofgeekdom and anyone else who wants to do it!

I was recently offered a job, which is very cool. it is more or less what I have been doing for the past three years, which is fine. I liked the people I interviewed with and the benefits are promising. the main issue is the pay is not great; i would be taking a definite pay cut.
I am not sure if I am currently overpaid (probably???). I don’t think I can try and negotiate a higher salary, as it is a job with a public university in Ireland and they have pay scales contingent on previous experience.
the pay also isn’t TERRIBLE, and might in fact be good for the type of work I am expected to do?? this is the only job in my search so far that even asked me to interview, so I don’t know if I will get any more bites in my applications. I do have a couple out for jobs I am much more excited about (better pay and more interesting work) but I have no idea if I will even get to the interview stage with them.
the folks who offered me the job want a response ASAP as they want me to start ASAP, but my start date is in January at the earliest since I don’t want to move to Ireland before Christmas. (and YES on top of this I will be coordinating an international move prior to starting!). they want me to start January 17, and I imagine the earliest I would be able to get to Ireland is like a week before.
I don’t want to string them along while I wait for responses from a couple other places as the university people are in urgent need of a hire. but I also am not super enthusiastic about it. but this might be as good as it gets??
yes i am asking for advice and suggestions!!!!

my hot take about the WANDAVISION finale is that it was great and part of why it is great is the lack of cameos that distract from the story the series was telling.

whumptober 2020 ------ day 30. wound reveal
@whumptober2020 Rebelcaptain Hunger Games AU: Cassian is Jyn’s mentor in the 70th Hunger Games. After being crowned victor at fifteen years old, Cassian is all-too-familiar with what it takes to bring a tribute home, and what becoming a victor really means.

“And remember, Jyn: one fighter with a sharp stick and nothing to lose…”
“Can take the day,” Jyn finishes reciting faithfully.
Saw looks at her with pride, before lowering his voice. “It is my hope you’ll have more than a sharp stick in the Arena. Your mentor will be whom you rely on to improve your odds; impress him and he can get you what you need to survive. I’ve taught you plenty—but how far you get won’t be based on your fighting skills alone.”
Jyn frowns; he can only be talking about Cassian Andor. “He hasn’t brought back any of his tributes. How can I trust him to help me?”
Saw lowers his voice even further. “You can’t. He’s been in the eyes of the Capitol for too long. But he’s your only hope in the Arena. Therefore, your only hope to get out.”
-
Saw’s words rattle around in her head as Jyn lies in her bunk. The way the train car gently sways on its tracks as it speeds its way towards the Capitol could almost be soothing, except for the fact that they’re hurtling their way to near-certain death.
…no, she can’t think like that. She tells herself it’s only a reflexive fear, borne of the circumstances that she’s been forced into of all the sheer, rotten luck in Panem. If only she hadn’t gotten reaped, she and Saw would have been able to complete their mission, then abscond out of District 5 as planned. She could have been seeing her mother again in a week’s time. If only…
Well, no use in dwelling on it now. She turns onto her side facing the bulkhead, determined to get some shut-eye before the morning brings with it the next day.
And with the next day will come the next time she sees Cassian. What transpired a few hours ago comes to mind unbidden—she had thought herself clever for kissing him to quiet his words (was he really so foolish to not think about the train being bugged?), but after he spotted the Peacekeeper approaching he reacted in kind. Taking her into his arms in a false display of intimacy like that. And it worked; the Peacekeeper quickly left them alone.
But then there was that kiss before they bid each other goodnight. He didn’t have to kiss her then, did he?
Jyn forces herself to stop thinking so she can go to sleep.
-
The morning of their first full day in the Capitol has Jyn waking up to three sharp knocks on her door.
“Jyn Erso. Breakfast is in the dining room.” That Capitol accent can only belong to Davits Draven, their escort. “I’d advise you to eat before you have your meeting with your stylist.”
The stylist. Kay. She had met them and the other stylist for Joule last night when they were prepared for the Opening Ceremony. But she already knew who they were in the way that most people in the districts, from the Games’ mandatory viewing, were familiar with the faces of stylists and mentors and victors and commentators amidst the ever-changing pool of tributes. Kay’s surgical augmentations were distinctive compared to the Capitol trends that ranged between somewhat natural and grotesque; his body was covered with a matte chrome synth skin, save for his face and hands which were kept as—presumably—his own pale skin tone. His eyes shone with a luminescence in the viewing stands that she could see from the chariot as the horses pulled to a stop around the City Circle during last night’s Opening Ceremony.
Jyn gets out of bed, selects a normal-looking outfit from the closet, and joins the rest of the party in the dining room. Joule is talking to Cassian, probably for the first time since he went catatonic at the reaping. But at the sound of the glass doors sliding open, their attention is turned to her.
“Good morning Jyn,” Cassian says, his tone perfectly placid. “Care for some breakfast?”
She sits there and eats quietly while the conversation flows around her. Compared to the intensity that radiated off of him last night, his conversation with Joule gives off the feeling of being polite yet distant; she vaguely wonders if he wrote off her district partner as she already has.
At the conclusion of their breakfast and after Draven comes to collect Joule first for the meeting with his stylist, Cassian crosses over to her side of the table and sits down next to her. “He’s pleasant enough,” he says about Joule, “but I’m not convinced he has a chance to make it out of the bloodbath if he freezes up like that again.” He gives her a wry look. “I trust that I don’t have to worry about that with you?”
Jyn knows he’s thinking about the way she slammed the cabin door shut on the train and then tried to fight her way through a squadron of Peacekeepers; she recalls the memory with a grin. “Trust goes both ways, right? I’ll show you what I’ve got in the Training Center.”
-
Draven brings the three of them down to the level that houses the enormous gymnasium they’re to train in for the next three days and leaves them there. Joule seems at a loss for what to do but Cassian offers to point out some of the more useful, rudimentary survival skill stations, so Jyn decides to take her own tour around the periphery.
There’s the weapon stations, of course: swords, spears, knife-throwing and the like. Then there’s the skill stations, like knot tying and snares and camouflage. Then she sees there are trainers available for hand-to-hand combat.
Her hands have been itching to come to blows with someone since that Peacekeeper held a gun to her head and Draven informed her, in his gratingly crisp Capitol accent, that there was no escaping the fate decided for her the moment her name was drawn in the reaping. She decided right then and there she was going to change it in her favor.
So she goes to the combat station and easily spars with a Capitol attendant there. It’s just like sparring with Uncle Saw, so with a few words and a jerk of her head she has the other trainers that were supposed to be available for other tributes join in; first, as two against her, and then she takes on all three. The sparring match finally ends when she’s knocked to the ground and a foot is planted firmly on her chest, but the grin the trainer’s giving her doesn’t seem mean-spirited as they help her back up. It’s only while she takes a moment to fix her bun and catch her breath that she sees what an audience she’s gathered, including attention from the Gamemakers, and that’s when the lunch session is called.
Disappointingly, Cassian is nowhere to be seen when she quickly scans the people who had been watching her. But she does accept the invitation from the Career pack to sit at their table for lunch.
-
Jyn doesn’t see Cassian again until that evening after Draven comes to collect them back up to their floor in the Tower. He’s sitting in the dining room with Kay, in different clothes than she saw him in that morning. Not that she noticed.
“I heard you impressed quite a few people in training today,” Cassian says as they eat their dinner. “How was she, Joule?”
Joule has gone quiet again. He fleetingly makes eye contact between her and Cassian before he nods his head, once.
Jyn decides to save them from the awkward pause that’ll follow. “If you stuck around, perhaps you would’ve seen it.”
A look of surprise crosses his face before Cassian lets out a short laugh. “I would’ve loved to see you sweep three trainers, but I’ll have to wait and see you in the Games. It’s up to you if you want to team up with the Careers or not but you’ve certainly got their attention, both as a potential ally and an enemy; take care to remember that. I want the both of you to check out all the weapons stations to get an idea of what will be available in the Arena but make sure you spend enough time learning survival skills. And Joule…”
The stricken sixteen-year-old boy looks up.
Cassian softens his tone. “I’m doing my best to secure sponsors for both of you. It’ll pay off in the Arena but I need you to survive for that to happen, so make the best of the next two training days and then we’ll go over final interview strategy with Draven. Alright?”
Surely he must know that Joule doesn’t stand a chance, Jyn thinks. But there’s something in the set of his shoulders, giving her the impression that he’s giving himself a pep talk as much as he is to them.
-
The evening following their private sessions with the Gamemakers is when the tributes’ evaluation scores are released. For the gamblers the scores dictated the odds to bet on in macabre betting pools; for the tributes, each score was a sign of who’s a threat and who can be ignored or—for the Careers—who will be easy pickings. When Jyn’s picture is shown on the screen followed by a 11, the others congratulate her and she smiles her thanks as she thinks about Saw. Is he watching her on national broadcast? He has to be, if he’s still in District 5. Would he feel proud of her so far?
But then she has an upsetting thought: what if he’s already left the district? What if he was able to complete the mission without her and he’s already gone off to the rendezvous? What if he’s already written her off as good as dead?
She can’t afford to think about that. After dinner she goes to the roof, wanting to get some air and privacy without locking herself up in her room. This will be the only time she’ll let herself cry, and then it’s game on. Tomorrow is the last day before the Games begin, and she’ll be spending the entirety of it with Draven and Cassian.
She finds a bench to sit down on, draws her knees up to her chest and hugs her face to her thighs. It takes a moment for the tears to come, as unused to crying as she is, but she lets out the sobs and sniffles as much as she’s able to without letting herself dwelling too much on her doubts.
When someone sits down next to her she somehow already knows it’s Cassian. He lightly touches her shoulder as if to ask permission, and when she finally peeks at him from the shelter of her arms he scoots a little closer and carefully wraps a comforting arm around her back.
They stay like that for a while until Jyn’s sure the tears have dried up. Then she asks, “Why’d you follow me up here?”
“I’m your mentor. You’re my tribute,” he says with amusement, as if the answer should’ve been obvious. “But… I wanted make sure you’re alright. You’ve held up strong so far, Jyn. I know you’re committed to winning this thing.”
“I am, it’s just…” Jyn bites her lip. “I can’t help being nervous.”
“Nobody can.”
“I keep thinking about the worst.”
“…Do you want help getting your mind off of it?”
Jyn can’t help how her lips quirk up at that. “Why, are you offering?”
Cassian doesn’t hesitate. “Whatever you need. I said it on the first night; I want to help you in any way possible.”
She knows there’s suggestive intent in his words. But the way that he says it expresses a pure, earnest wish to help.
So, she doesn’t feel bad when she leans in to kiss him.
-
She can’t help but think about that last kiss and the make-out session that followed each time a silver parachute comes to her in the Arena. She’s received ten so far; in the past Games Jyn’s watched, it’s the Careers who receive the most gifts from sponsors eager to help their favored tributes win. While there were some morally repugnant people in the districts who were betting on the same tributes, ultimately only those in the Capitol could impact the odds; nobody in the districts had that much spare money to frittle away gambling on the deaths of children.
As the Games continued on, the price of sending gifts and aid increased. Even in the Capitol there was a hierarchy to sponsorship, with only the wealthiest sponsors holding sway in the endgame. The Games commentators often interviewed those uber philanthropists on the public broadcast of the Games and so Jyn even knew some of their names: Laertes Crake, Cygnus Vondel, Trimalchio Plena. Having made it this far, she wonders if any of the boons she’s received were sponsored by any of them.
It’s nighttime in the Arena. Jyn rests in the shadows of a ruined entryway, taking care to remain concealed. An unnaturally full moon illuminates the ruins of the game field; the Gamemakers made it so that each night alternated between bright moonlight and the darkness of a new moon. With each night, instead of resting, the tributes found themselves playing a deadly game of moving shadows and evasion and hunts in the dark.
Jyn wouldn’t have gotten this far in the Games without Cassian’s help; he had sent her heat vision goggles early on. The gift enabled her to evade the other tributes until more death cannons were fired, and when it came time to go on the offensive she had a frightening advantage.
But that boy from the Career pack must have gotten his hands on a pair too, because how else could he have known she was going to ambush them? He’d cut her with his blade, poisoning her with a paralytic, and she had genuinely believed she was going to die that very night. But true to her mentor’s word, the sight of a silver parachute some hours into the darkness of a new moon cut through her panic; inside was a sweet syrup that faded away the worsening stiffness in her body and left her feeling rejuvenated. She was able to get some good, actual rest for once that night.
This night hopefully she will, too. Tomorrow will be the day she has to attack the alliance stronghold, otherwise the Gamemakers might decide to set muttations on them or create some other disaster to force them into action. As she starts to doze she thinks about him. Cassian.
Going into the Games she knew she had an advantage not even the Career tributes could fathom, by virtue of being secretly trained in insurgent and resistance tactics by her uncle. But she had also known that what Saw said in their last words to each other was right: she wouldn’t make it far without help from her mentor. She would make it past the bloodbath and survive maybe a few days, but when the real challenges began she’d get killed by something or other, and there’d go any chance of her making it back to District 5 to complete the mission and get away with Saw.
While Jyn knew she must have earned some sponsors with her score from the Gamemakers’ evaluations, Cassian was ultimately the one in charge of handling them and dispensing gifts to her in the Arena. He might even have marshalled for her cause when she was in dire straits, such as when she got poisoned by that blade. Back in the Capitol he must be doing a lot for her and she can’t even begin to grasp what all of that could possibly entail; she owed him more than she could put words to.
And better still yet, after each night and day of fighting to stay alive, it felt nice and reassuring to be cared for. To know that somewhere beyond the Arena there was somebody from back home who was doing everything they could to help you. Because they believed in you. If she died in the ensuing struggle tomorrow she could at least die knowing that.
But if… when she wins, it wouldn’t be a lie to say she’s looking forward to seeing him again. To thank him. To let him know he sustained her both physically and emotionally throughout the Games. That just thinking of their last kiss on the rooftop did something to help to temper her fears, soothe her nerves after the stress of each day, and feel more ready to face the world about to kill her.
She thinks about these things, tucks them into the warm recesses of her heart. She might be facing certain death tomorrow but she won’t let his help be in vain.
And then disaster strikes with the earthquake.
-
Time is moving too erratically for Jyn to keep up.
It had seemed immeasurably long when the earth and the Arena shook beneath her feet, sifting the crumbling ruins to dust and debris on top and around her. It was a miracle that she was still alive, that the collapse of ruins she was by had pinned her leg to the ground beneath two walls that fell to support each other. Her heart beat in absolute terror, loudly and wildly out of her chest, as she waited for the dust to settle and for any possible aftershocks to finally strike her dead.
But time sped up once more once she had freed herself and made it to the general location that the alliance hideout formerly was. One moment she was emerging from her almost-tomb and in the next moment she’s leaning against the remains of a doorway to catch her breath, hardly knowing how many tributes she could take on or how many even survived.
When that dust-covered hand grabbed her ankle she had fallen in slow motion; after the eternity of one long second she was on her back, coughing as the wind was knocked out of her. Then it took several minutes to dig out her last foe—slitting her throat had only taken a second—and longer minutes still for her to bleed out and die.
Then a hovercraft whisks her away from the Arena faster than she could blink. But when it touches down and she disembarks in a stumble, the first person she sees is Cassian.
He looked as beautiful as anyone Jyn had ever known; time slows down in the beat of two seconds but she doesn’t even make it into his arms before she feels a prick and her vision suddenly tunnels out. But she still saw him, and when she sees him still in the strange, continual twilight the sedatives keep her under she’s comforted.
-
He’s there when she wakes up.
It takes a while for the disorientation to wear off, but when it does she realizes that the warmth in her left hand is his hand holding hers, gently. Her vision’s still blurry but she doesn’t need to wait for it to clear to know that it’s Cassian sitting next to her, just like she knew it was him that night on the roof. Aside from his genuine smile he looks so flawlessly styled—manufactured—as all things were in the Capitol. She had liked the scruff on his jawline and the stubble heading down his throat from when they had boarded the train, but after they arrived Kay had personally made sure Cassian’s facial hair was meticulously groomed. Not a hair where it needn’t be.
She wonders how long it will take to grow back once they’re back in District 5. Back home in District 5…
“How are you feeling?” he asks.
“How long have I been out for?”
“Five days. The poison that Career used to paralyze you came from a muttation; they had to detoxify your blood and run a lot of tests to make sure that it was all gone. Now, how are you feeling?”
Jyn tries to answer, but the way Cassian is looking at her makes her feel a little floaty, a little warm; like maybe the sedatives haven’t fully worn off yet. But she does manage to say, “I’m feeling okay. Thank you. Really. For taking care of me in there.”
Cassian’s gaze softens to something less intense, but still profound. He looked at her the same way after their make-out session on the rooftop, so she isn’t surprised when he leans in to kiss her.
He has to prop one arm on the other side of the bed to steady himself as their lips meet. It’s soft, chaste; they meet again, and again, and then he leans in close to her ear.
“Do you remember our first kiss on the train?”
Of course she does. “I do; why?”
“Can you pretend like that for me again? Once we’re out of here?”
It’s said like a flirt, but his words snap Jyn back to full awareness of their situation: she has just won the 70th Hunger Games. She had been resting and unconscious for the past few days but once she’s discharged Kay and the prep team are going to prepare her for the Closing Ceremony. To be paraded in front of the Capitol on Panem’s national broadcast as the newest victor, with her stylist, prep team, escort, and mentor. And then she will be crowned by President Snow.
Her mind flits over all of their conversations. Are they in trouble? They had talked about treasonous things, but that was under the sound of a thousand tinkling wind chimes; she’s sure that Cassian wouldn’t have brought her there for a private talk to be eavesdropped on.
Or by ‘pretend’, does he mean how they faked a passionate moment to deflect suspicion?
That must be it; she can read in his face the plea for her to understand. With him this close to her, she notices there’s a tension to his body that belies the playfulness of his words.
Jyn nods before reaching to pull him closer to her and kiss him again. For now she wants to ease his worry; Cassian will tell her in due time, and then they can face it together. After the last two weeks Jyn is confident they can.

“This story happened a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away. It is already over. Nothing can be done to change it. It is a story of love and loss, brotherhood and betrayal, courage and sacrifice and the death of dreams. It is a story of the blurred line between our best and our worst. It is the story of the end of an age.”
So begins the novelization of Revenge of the Sith. But fanworks are a pathway to many abilities some consider to be unnatural -- like the ability to change a angst-ridden final act into a happily-ever-after!
The 2020 Clone Wars Saved Exchange is a chance to commemorate and celebrate the clone troopers across all Star Wars media since their appearance in 2002, through both fanfic and fanart.
Tag nominations will open next Saturday, 23 May, 08:00 EST, with sign-ups running from Saturday, 30 May to Friday, 5 June on the AO3 collection here.
Schedule:
May 23-30: Nominations May 30 - 5 June: Sign ups June 6: Matching and assignments go out, requests go live July 19: Early default deadline August 3: Assignments due, pinch hits go out August 8: Pinch hits due August 10: Works go live August 17: Archive closes and creators revealed
Nomination Requirements:
Clone characters from across the Star Wars universe are welcome. This includes Legends, video games, Dark Horse comics, Rebels, &c.
Crossovers outside Star Wars are not allowed. As long as the nomination includes at least one or more clone character(s) from any Canon or Legends material, it’s acceptable for the exchange. If you want Sev from RepComm to adopt Jyn Erso, then go for it.
Original Clone Characters (OCCs) cannot be nominated, but they will be welcome in works.
Although this is a Clone Wars centric exchange, please only nominate characters under the Star Wars – All Media Types fandom tag. The mod will organize characters and pairings by subfandom (e.g. Star Wars: The Clone Wars, Star Wars: Rebels, Star Wars: Legends).
For the purposes of this exchange, Boba Fett will not be considered a clone.
Sign-Up Requirements
You must have an AO3 account to participate.
You will be able to request between 3 and 10 clone characters/relationships from the tag set. Please only request clone characters for whom you’d like to receive a gift. You must request three at the minimum. Please specify whether you would like to receive fic or art. If no offers match your request, you will be contacted by the mod to see if you’d like to add requests to make you matchable.
You will be able to offer between 4 and 10 relationships from the tag set. Please only offer clone characters and relationships for which you are willing to create content. Please specify whether you would like to offer fic or art or both. If nothing you offer matches any requests made, the mod will contact you to see if you can add offers to your sign-up.
This is a clone-centric exchange. The content created should include the clone character(s) matched on in some way. Jedi, Sith, Senators, OCs, &c. are all welcome, but the primary focus should be on the troopers.
There will be a section in sign-ups for optional details and letters if you have them. It is very helpful to give creators an idea of what you like, but more importantly what you Do Not Want (DNW). These must be included in the AO3 sign-up; DNWs listed in external letters but not on AO3 may slip through.
Assignments
You are only guaranteed to match on one clone character and one creative medium.
Please be judicious about where you chat about your assignment; your recipient may be sharing that space with you and this is an anonymous exchange for the first week. No spoilers, please.
If your assignment doesn’t match your sign-up, please contact the mod as soon as possible.
Gift Requirements
Gift works must respect the recipients’ DNWs. If a DNW is included, the creator’s work will not be published and the creator will be removed from the exchange.
Completed fic assignments must be at least 1000 words created specifically for the recipient and must include at least one of their requested characters and/or relationships.
Completed art assignments must be an original piece created by the artist in traditional or digital mediums. At the very least, it should include detailed line art and may not be drawn on lined paper. The minimum acceptable size is 1000 x 1000 pixels. It should include at least one of the recipient’s requested clone characters.
Posting
Fics and art must be posted on AO3 in the Clone Wars Saved 2020 collection.
Fic entries with excessive spelling and grammar errors will be rejected. Contact the mod if you need beta help and they will put the word out.
Obviously, as this is an anon exchange please don’t post your work (including snippets) elsewhere before reveals.
Pinch Hits
Pinch hits will be posted here.
If you’d like to claim a pinch hit, message the mod with your AO3 name.
Treats
Treats are welcome, but should fill a stated request for the recipient.
Treats must also respect any Do Not Wants.
There are no minimum requirements for treats (e.g. a fic of 700 words is acceptable).
Please tag all treats as “Clone Wars Saved Treat."
Treats may go into the main collection.
Code of Behavior
Please acknowledge (ideally with a comment) on your gift – even if you defaulted.
Default early if you know you will be unable to complete your assignment. The mod then doesn’t have to scramble for last minute pinch hitters.
If Sith Happens last minute, PM the mod asap or shoot an e-mail to [email protected]
This is supposed to be a fun low-key celebration of the clone troopers and Star Wars as a whole. This is not a place for kinkshaming, ship wars, militant moral policing, etc. Thank you!
For the Republic!
