The event will run from February 8 to 14 and is a chance for people to celebrate the fic writers in this wonderful community! This event was inspired by the wonderful event here. The way it works is for you to recommend and review fics with fixed themes for each day, published in a Tumblr post.

Rebelcaptain Valentine Rec Week Day 1

So as per usual, picking just a few great fics in this fandom has been a pretty Herculean task because there are so many. So, like @incognitajones, I’ve decided to mostly focus on fics that I haven’t seen recced anywhere else and that I think deserve some more love.

Published 2017

Blind Faith by @nrgburst

Jyn is temporarily blinded by the Death Star beam on Scarif and she and Cassian heal together. A lovely dose of comfort with some comedy and (a bit of) sex thrown in for good measure.

Clues by @rapidashpatronus

The story of how Cassian and Jyn get together with the help of cryptic crosswords. This is sweet as sugar and manages to be so emotionally satisfying despite its relatively short length.

I vaguely remember reccing this before but I’ll do it again because man, this fic is SLEPT ON! Jyn goes with Galen on Lah’mu and meets a younger Cassian on a mission. It’s long and plotty (including more Bail and Jedi! Leia) and it features scorchingly well-written sex (for anyone worried about the dubcon tag - it’s referencing a brief, non-explicit interaction at the beginning that’s not between Jyn and Cassian). I’ve reread it a bunch of times and am always a bit bewildered that it hasn’t yet gained the traction in fandom that it deserves.

got a hold on me series by @ofhobbitsandwomen

This is a series of missing makeout scenes throughout the movie. The sexual tension is deliciously palpable in each story and I particularly love how well each kiss fits the part of the movie it’s set in - a gorgeous, swoony illustration of the progression of Jyn and Cassian’s relationship throughout the film.

Jyn learns Festian to give Cassian a piece of his home for his birthday, feat. an Extra Salty but also quite sweet K2 as her teacher. It’s dreamily romantic and cute as baby Yoda.

This is quite a dark fic set during The Mandalorian (and poised to place Cassian and maybe Jyn right in the middle of that plot line, which I’m v. excited for). Our poor bubs are not coping well after Scarif and the prose paints a stark yet vivid picture of their broken but compelling relationship. This has the potential to be a gripping story and I’m definitely hooked.

Four Drinks In (I’m Wasted)  by @moroaica

A beautifully written detective and informant au that oozes sex appeal without being explicit and also delivers on the pining that all of us are such trash for. My favourite thing about it is that even though we (rightly) see Jyn through Cassian’s eyes as mesmerising and mysterious, she never comes across as cold or unfeeling. It’s still unfinished but what a way to begin!

Modern au where Jyn wakes up next to her best friend Cassian (who she is, naturally, in love with) and glorious miscommunication and pining ensue! Just because we know the story doesn’t mean we won’t read it a million versions of it and love every one, right? This is hot and funny and delivers on everything its premise promises.

Honey Ask Me (I Should Know) also by @moroaica

Another great opening chapter from this author - this time it’s a post-demon apocalypse au. Both characters are captured perfectly as they began in the film: Jyn is prickly and ashamedly mercenary while Cassian is all hard-edged competence and trying to balance his contempt for Jyn with his curiosity. Their dialogue is slick and sharp and the sparks are already flying. Can’t wait for more of this one.

I’ll point you home by halflingmerry 

I adore this author’s work and they’re definitely on form with this story so far. It’s set after Endor with some flashbacks and the overarching plot is trying to find a new body for K2 (Cassian needs a new droid because he can’t bear to wipe another droid’s conscience because of course!! - the author has a particularly good grasp on characterisation and the thought they put into their work is always obvious). Jyn and Cassian’s relationship is caught in the limbo between romance and friendship and the longing just leaps off the page and grabs your heart. I also love the depiction of their professional partnership and how well and naturally they work together.

❤️ Day Seven: Most Re-Read ❤️

the silver in your dark hair by @halflingmerry​

My favorite canon fix-it fic, dealing with the aftermath of Scarif, the healing, and a billion of burning emotions. This fic is unlike anything I’ve read, it’s an Experience™. The author’s style is hauntingly poetic and the devotion between Jyn and Cassian is truly beautiful. A great Slow Burn, an amazing world-building, a lot of thoughts put into background characters and original plot points. Not to mention Kay, whose rendition is fabulous.  Just READ IT and thank me later! 

Leap by @sleepykalena

A one-shot of neck kissing, and oh boy, we’re talking god tier of neck kissing! I love love love the intimacy in this fic! The author perfectly balances Jyn’s desires and vulnerability in this T-rated fic, and the shift in their relationship is like a huge plate of comfort food. The descriptions are amazing and it feels 100% authentic and true to the characters. I’ve read it way too many times and I still try to hit the kudos button each time.

Shelter in Place by @incognitajones

I LOVE this young Jyn meets Cassian one-shot! The characterization is spot-on and perfectly in sync with canon, not to mention the premise is incredibly interesting. I love Jyn’s fierceness and the way she deals with her sexuality. The smut is amazing and beautifully written. Bonus point for an ending that delivers the right amount of angst and leaves you craving for a reunion! 

the waiting's been so long (so long) by @skitzofreak

Modern AU but masterfully keeping Cassian’s essence in this one. I re-read it many times because I’m absolutely in love with his characterization, not to mention that Jyn is a champ herself and both are extremely genuine rendition of my favs. I’m very sensitive to consent and the way this fic deals with vulnerable people and personal boundaries is phenomenal. Also, the smut is extremely hot.

BRING ME HOME

A one-shot fix-it fic that deals with Jyn’s traumas, fear of abandonment and survivor guilt. She runs away across the galaxy in search of somewhere she could belong until Cassian finds her back and show her how to stay. It’s my personal rendition of their happy ending and will always be incredibly special to me. Probably my most in-canon piece, too.

UNTITLED PROM NIGHT

High School AU (for people who don’t like High School AU). It’s the one I re-read when I need to cheer myself up. Cassian is desperately pining but he’s too much of a loner to talk to Jyn, until she decides that he will take her to prom (and he Did Not Ask). Cassian is shook. Jyn has literally no chill and will punch you in the face if you mess with her. I wrote this listening to the Euphoria soundtrack so it’s a bop.

Romance & Comedy?

Title: Taste All Your Thoughts

He's a CIA agent. She's an FBI linguist. Life happens in random moments.

Or: First meetings, flirtatious competition, and the trust and respect underneath it all.

Rated: Mature

What I love about it:

This fic came at a really hard time in my life and yet somehow reminded me how to laugh again. It’s fun and it’s sexy and the characterizations are spot on. 

The premise is that Jyn and Cassian are competing to get the most donations for an organizational charity. Deadpanprincess executed this perfectly: flirty competition; witty banter not just between Jyn & Cassian but also between Cassian & Kay; and there’s also some prize scenes between Jyn & Kay and Jyn & Bodhi. I absolutely love that Jyn is not only a linguist, but she’s written books that “saved Cassian’s life”! 

I think this quote perfectly encompasses the mood of this fic, and it’s one of my favorite lines: 

They dance around each other, smoothly stepping from one mark to the next. Cassian notes her coordination. Jyn tracks the length of his interactions. Kay records how many times they break conversation with their intended targets because they focus too closely on one another (five).

The whole fic is like a dance. Their backstories aren’t so different, their tactics for their competition are, but in the end they are both incredibly competent and incredibly attracted to each other. It’s so good! A really fun one-shot.

What I love about it:

This was absolutely, breathtakingly beautiful, from beginning to end — from the description of a sleepy spring morning to the description of glowing candles and how beautiful Cassian sees Jyn. This whole fic just fills me with a warm and happy feeling! I loved Jyn and Cassian’s quiet happiness as they look towards the future. It’s full of hope for the future and the peace at the end of the war. Wonderful fluff!

What I love about it:

This is so sweet and hilarious and very endearing at the end. It’s very striking how little Cassian smiles in the movie (not that there’s much to smile about, but still). It’s so wonderful to see two people coming together to give him more reasons to do so. Also, Kay and Jyn bonding is always delightful.

RC Rec Week Day 3

Romance

This was the hardest theme of all! I have so many favourites for this ship I had to be absolutely ruthless or this list would be 500 stories long. In the end, I went with two writers whose overall quality is so high that I could’ve recommended any of their stories at random. If you like these, please check out more/all of their work!

Did I mention I love reunion stories? This one has an edge of angst (another common quality in my likes) as Jyn’s squad took heavy losses and was unable to check in post-mission, so Cassian didn’t know whether she’d survived. The bittersweet backdrop makes their reunion all the more poignant.

“I’m never leaving for that long again,” she said, pulling his shirt over his head and muffling his response, retaking his mouth as soon as she’s able. All she’d thought about on her way out had been leaving him, and losing him, and the only consolation as she’d come back had been the thought of seeing him again. Bad feelings all around, and all the way through.

treading water by @lustfulpasiphae [M/E, 6000 words]

Simply put, this story is amazing. I'd sell my soul to be able to pack so much angst, characterization, relationship development, and an incredibly hot sex scene into just 6000 words of gorgeous prose.

He was genuinely confused. This, she supposed, was what came of never talking about their nightmares.

She took a deep breath that was trying very hard to pretend it wasn’t half a sob, as his hands cautiously stroked her upper arms.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly, but she could tell it was the sort of apology people gave when they had no idea what they were apologizing for.

Comedy

I had a hard time thinking of a rec for this theme, since I don't read a lot of straight comedy (though I do love stories with funny moments or good banter)... then I remembered these comics, which never fail to make me laugh.

@readordiebyemilyt's style is super cute & charming! Most of her Rogue One comics are about the whole team, or Cassian and K-2, but these two have some delightfully shippy subtext:

"Fine. If our pretend marriage fails, that's on you."

"here is another comic about dead people flirting"

You probably all know this one, because it is the fic on AO3 with the most kudos (I think) but my fic rec for day one of the Rebelcaptain Valentine’s Fic Rec Week is nevertheless “floating, sinking” from @shu-of-the-wind. It was the first Rogue One fanfic I ever read and it blew me away.

It was this fic that really brought me into Rogue One fandom. I was lucky I discovered it when I was on holiday, because it’s really long and so I could read it all the way through in three days. After reading this I just had to have more.

I love it because it’s a classic fix-it fic where the Rogues’ life after Rogue One is depicted, and where they even take on a role in the recovery of the Death Star plans. Jyn’s and Cassian’s beginning romance is so beautifully and subtly done, and the language is so beautiful, too. All the characters’ POVs are great, I love all of them, I couldn’t even decide which one is the best. I’m reading it for the second time right now (but I have to put it down sometimes for a while because I get too self-conscious about my own writing when I read this! XD)

There are just a million stories I love but I am going to stick with two for each prompt! Thank you to @dasakuryo for the format. It’s my fav so I snagged :D

∟ WIP corellian rum by @captainandors (wintersend)    Jyn has a plan.Only it doesn’t go like she’d hoped and she’s forced to reevaluate the year she spent with Cassian undercover as a married couple, wondering how much of it was real and how much of it was an act - or if it was all an act?

I love an angsty story with a pining and miscommunication. This has an amazing premise of a long term undercover mission with feelings that could be perceived to be mixed. I can’;t wait for what’s around the corner.

Jyn is Jyn, Cassian has feelings and is perplexed.

I love that Cassian has so much he has to say but can’t seem to get a single word out. The pining is real and I keep rooting for Cassian to just spit it out already and I am here for this story.

∟ Multi-Chaptered • Invisible Things by pipperkipper     Jyn Erso would never dare to call herself a hero, but there are few things she wouldn’t do for the ones she cared about, even if they’re painful. 

I think I may have reread this about a thousand times. It is sad and hopeful and loving and it shows the consequences of the actions we take, the impact it may have on those we love. 

• I might know my heart by @skitzofreak    It didn’t matter, he realized suddenly as Jyn’s weight shifted to push herself upright, probably calculating how she could jump over him and leave the room. It didn’t matter if they were still sensitive or awkward or just the most ridiculous two organics to ever attempt whatever-the-hells-this-relationship-was. He could ponder it later, when she wasn’t three seconds from stalking out the door under the mistaken impression that he didn’t want her with him.-

After surviving the Invasion of Jedha City, Captain Cassian Andor of Rebel Intelligence is sent to the Ring of Kafrene to discover what kyber crystals, Imperial weapons development, and a scientist named Galen Erso have to do with each other. It's a dangerous, complex mission full of more pitfalls than he can imagine ...but he won't be facing it alone.

Honestly I could live in this series forever. This is the third in the One Night Stand series and beyond the incredible world building, there is such a nuanced love story layered between the action that I live for the quiet moments. All the things said, unsaid, misunderstood and acknowledged is beautiful. If the author ever explored this world again, I would be the firs to sign up.

Rebelcaptain Valentine’s Fic Rec Week

Day 2: WIP || Multi-Chaptered

Spiel ohne Grenzen by @ruby-red-inky-blue 

Dear lord what can’t I say about this fic? It is one of the best things I have ever read, even outside of fanfiction. You can tell how much the author likes this era and Germany just by how detailed and fleshed out the setting is. The prose is gorgeous which is just something you should expect from one of ruby-red-inky-blue’s stories. They are also very good about using Rogue One’s original  themes and weaving them beautifully into new stories, in just a way that makes the story feel familiar (in the best way) and brand new at the same time.  

Speaking to just how incredible this story is, I already love Jyn and Cassian’s relationship and they have not officially met yet. In my defense Cassian is already half in love with Jyn and I can see what’s probably going to happen from Jyn’s side and I am so excited about it! I only recently (horrible I know) found this fic and I would have to say it’s my favorite Rogue One fic of all times. I’m sure I’ll literally cry and shout for joy when I get the next notification update because nothing about this fic does not utterly enthrall me, impress me, and leave me begging for more!

 After Scarif, Jyn spends four days unconscious in the Yavin 4 medbay. She sleeps through the annihilation of Alderaan, the sudden appearance of a young Jedi, and his subsequent near-miraculous destruction of her father’s legacy.  When she wakes, groggy and in pain, the amount of information that spills out of Bodhi simply flows over her, as if she were a river-stone in the fast-flowing streams on Lah’mu.  The only thing that does stick is that Cassian is alive. Bodhi is smart enough to open with this fact, and repeats it several more times during their one-sided conversation.

For the RebelCaptain Network fic rec day 6: Mission fic

True and False by @incognitajones​

So this story is about an weird undercover mission where Jyn is playing the role of a paid consort for a lazy arrogant jerk and Cassian is not really comfortable with it, even he has the role of the lazy arrongant jerk. What I like the most in there is that even if the story is told through Jyn’s eyes, and she doesn’t get what is wrong with Cassian, as a reader, it’s perfectly clear.

And of course, there is the problem of what is real, what is not, what is supposed to not be real and what is not supposed to be real but is anyway. True and False indeed.

I wanna talk about how I love The Soulmate and the Seeker which is so brand new it was only finished like a week ago. I’m a sucker for soulmate stuff and this one made me cry. Like, I literally had tears streaming down my face. I love it, go read it. You rule @pawprinterfanfic I love this story so much I tried to give it two kudos but it wouldn’t let me.
