It's kinda shocking to me how few people seem to know how prevalent the 'my great grandmother was cherokee' myth is and how it's almost never actually true, especially when it comes with things like 'never signed up' or 'fell off the trail' or 'courthouse burned down destorying the documentation' etc etc.

People just don't even seem to know the history like.. when the Trail happened. My great great great grandfather was 2 years old during Removal in 1838, so peoples 'my great grandmother hid in the mountains!' is so clearly wrong. And we have rolls. From before and after removal, rolls done by cherokee nation and others by the government, rolls that were not stored in one random flammable courthouse. It's not difficult to find the actual evidence of ancestry.

And just.. there are lots of ways those family stories get started. It was a practice during the confederacy to claim cherokee ancestry to show one's family had 'deep roots in the south' that they were there before the cherokee were removed. Many people pretended to be cherokee and applied for the Guion-Miller payout just to try to steal money meant for cherokees - 2/3rds of the applicants were denied for having 0 proof of actual cherokee ancestry. [We even see lawyers advertising signing up for the Miller roll just to try to get free money.] And the myth even started in some families in the cherokee land lotteries, where the land stolen from us was raffled off, including the house and everything that was left behind when the cherokees were removed. We have seen people whose families just take these things stolen from the cherokee family and adopt them into their own family story, saying that they were cherokee themselves.

If you had some family story about being cherokee and you wanna have proof one way or the other, check out this Facebook group run by expert cherokee genealogists that do research for free. Just please read the rules fully and respect the researchers. They run thousands of people's ancestries a year and their average is only around 0.7% of lines they run actually end up having true cherokee ancestry.

If you are willing to justify your usage of a system created and profiting off of stealing from artists and writers, a symstem that is destroying the Earth, then you were never as “against that system” as you think you were. Being anti-AI isn’t something that exists only in name. You can’t claim to be against AI if you are willing and able to use it as soon as it benefits you. You can’t say you’re for writers’ and artists’ rights if you’re using the very thing that is causing them harm. You can’t claim to care about climate change and saving the Earth if you are participating in the system that is destroying it.

There is no middle ground here.

There is no “Oh, but I-“.

If you have the knowledge of what generative AI is doing, of how it is hurting people, and you choose to use it anyway, you aren’t  against it. You aren’t fighting against that system, you’re upholding it.

You can say how much you hate AI and how horrible you think it is, if you choose to use it anyway, then your actions and your words are not lining up, and the former reveals so much more than the latter.

Stop pretending like AI is something you can condemn only in name, while using it to your heart’s content in your free time. All it does it tells writers and artists that you don’t really care about us, and that any actions you claim to be taking to protect us are performative at best and lies or even outright malicious at worst.

You are—and I mean this in the kindest way possible, even with the fury that generative AI invokes in me—a complete and utter hypocrite. AI is not your friend. It is a tool, and it is a tool that steals from writers and artists in order to function. It is a tool that is using levels of energy and emitting amounts of polution in order to be maintained that are actively damaging the Earth. No matter how much you try to justify using it to yourself, that doesn’t change.

Stop hiding under the guise of being anti-AI while continuing to use it yourself.

I've seen a couple of posts calling people out for criticizing people based on their appearances and not what they did in reaction to James Somerton getting insulted on his clothes. Those posts are good! But I always find it weird how people in the notes talk about how you shouldn't "criticize people for something they can't change". That always feels extremely weird to me. I think you guys are missing the point of how reinforcing beauty standards and judging people morally for not conforming to them is always shitty as fuck.

You can change your hair style and clothes but you shouldn't insult people for not wearing what you expect them to. Would anyone be interested in a simplified version of the Jason reading carrd with this format? Rather than putting every single issue it's a list of comics from each era (pre-crisis, post-crisis, new 52, etc) that highlights his origin/personality at the time, and issues with his dynamic with different batfam members/his friends for fics research. Listen guys I get that the new watcher news sucks and is awful, I hate it too, but I think some people are overreacting, just a little bit. The pivot to streaming is absolute bullshit and, objectively, a bad move but you don't need to scorn everything they've ever made just because they made a stupid decision. So I don't want to say I'm disappointed about this, but maybe I've just been spoiled by scorpy's amazing (and authentic) VHS skills, because the picture quality is way too high for a CRT, even using RCA-to-RCA, no additional conversion, the pixels are just too well defined to give an authentic VHS feel...

I eventually switched it over to the flatscreen tv using 720p, RCA-to-HDMI, and the picture is again very clear, even with the artificially added loss. However, the texture bleeding and tracking loss effect that's been added is definitely much better in this particular format. It feels more authentic and enhances the experience, and while it doesn't compare to the naturally bad quality expected of the CRT, it's still an improvement.

And then I switched the flatscreen tv to a 1080p display, and again, the loss texturing that was added certainly helps, but it just doesn't feel authentic to an actual VHS copy. There's definitely effort in this, but when playing the video in such a high resolution, it kind of gives the game away that it's all edited in. Maybe that's intentional, though? Don't look TOO closely, or you'll see the wires, you know?

I'll plug this into my laptop next to see if I can pull some additional display options out of it, but I think it's safe to say the best option for viewing The Founder's Cut VHS tape is using around 720p on a computer monitor or flatscreen tv, as it gives the closest to an authentic genloss'd experience you can get!

Even if it doesn't look all that great on the CRT, I am still quite happy with how this tape eventually came out overall. There's obvious effort here to show a degraded, lossed, altered video, and that really adds to the story of Generation Loss, especially the version of that story that the Founder seems to want people to know.
