A complex relationship with "othering"

I somewhat recently learned of the phrase neurodivergent othering and queer othering. The portraying of ND or Queer characters as non-humans.

And it took me longer than I'm proud of to realize that this was a problem.

Why? Because I'm not really human. I mean I am physical. But seeing non-human characters who were super like me was very fulfilling.

One of the perks of being otherkin I guess. And not something I've really ever admitted to anyone but my partner. So here you go random internet people!

And yes we need more human rep too. But let's not cut out the non-human rep please? Bring on queer and ND people of all shapes, sizes, and species!

Nonhumans are here, even if you do not see us. We always will be. We are often hard to spot, but can be found doing all the things a human might.

A cat went to work at an event stall for a mental health service.

A massive sea serpent wanted to go to science class because it enjoyed it more than the rest of those living in its shared form.

The void sat down, huddled up in a blanket, to watch a tv show with its partners. It had to stop watching after a bit, but enjoyed spending time with those close to it anyway.

A wolf went to a psychologist appointment and gratefully drank the hot chocolate they were offered in the waiting room.

A shapeshifting being of pure darkness spoke publicly about trans rights in front of politicians and then went to the pride festival he helped fight to keep alive.

A dragon went to school so the others sharing his human body could have a break.

A manifestation of the fear of madness itself sat in the food court at the mall eating mochi and drinking tea while waiting for its friends to get back from shopping.

A witch drew a picture of his cardinal bird and shared the work he was so proud of with his friends.

A cockatoo borrowed the next book in his favourite series from the school library and almost couldn't wait the whole day to go home and read it.

An alien went camping and watched the birds outside and the way the wind made waves and patterns on the water.

A fallen angel went shopping for sunglasses to shield his eyes from how bright the sun was.

A harpy went shopping for new plants to look after. He named a few because he loved them so much, and sent pictures to all of his friends.

An anthropomorphic hedgehog traded Pokemon cards with his peers at school. He was happy with his collection.

You may not see us, and you may feel alone, but you are not. We are just hidden. We are in more places than you'd think, and in the places you'd least expect. We are complex, we are valued, and we are here.

you guys who are using "TikTok therians" to mean people who think being a therian is an aesthetic and not an actual nonhuman identity have forgotten the days when "tumblrkin" was the word of choice for that group, huh?

You will never always be cool. Or aesthetic, or pleasing.

No matter what you are, be it a majestic dragon, a powerful wolf, the void itself, a bunny, or even a song, a concept or object. Anything.

We almost all are organisms or living, one way or another, and organisms do strange and gross things. A wolf still needs the bathroom, a "cutesy" bunny may still need sexual things or things that aren't "innocent", sometimes even a God or holy figure may want to mess around and play with their hands like puppets. An eldrich being may make a childish sound to stim.

Everyone is gross or weird or uncool sometimes. It's just our nature as individuals. Let yourself need and want these things, and accept the weirdness being individual brings.

What are some weird things you did as a child before you realized you were alterhuman, because I ate cat food and tried to convince my cousins that I actually liked it so that they would see me as a weird human-cat-hybrid.

I also tried convincing people that I ate roadkill?????? And when I learned how to swim I KNEW what I had to do, but I just refused to stop with my dog paddling and my mom thought I was stupid 😊✨

dog with a blog? nah. dog with a JOB. i come into work with my tail and my theta delta necklace and the building implodes from my sheer swag. weirdo teenagers love me. also having your own paycheck means you can get whatever gear/treats you want (once bills are paid, of course - bet youve never heard a dog say that!)

living in your own apartment? well the pet limit is 2 but if i include myself im going over the limit. whoops! good thing i love lying to landlords (fuck landlords). living alone (no roomie) is even better bc theres no one to judge you for your animal habits. i can make a huge den in the living room and who is going to stop me?

i even have my own health insurance. bro. imagine being a dog with medicaid. im climbing the walls and howling and barking. i love being a dog filling out government paperwork.

having your own vehicle? THIS DOG CAN DRIVE! if i feel like going to the lake i can just go to the lake! nobody is stopping me! midnight ride with the windows down to howl at the moon? yes please!!

you can literally just go wherever bro. i moved 11 hours from my hometown to the mountains to feel more at home. i lived in the great plains and now i can just go out for a hike in the rockies and howl at the sky.

being an adult therian slaps so fucking hard i cant wait for the youth to grow up and experience the joy of freedom. yes being an adult is incredibly stressful but if youve been stifled living with family, you get a real chance to develop who you truly are. adult therians i love you im rubbing against your neck and mixing our scents. mwah.

Certainly it is a bit depressing how so many otherkin accidentally fall into ecofascism and such because of hating humanity. loathing humans won’t do anything, humans are also an animal species, but also with a unique capacity of altruism and caretaking. A cat does not care that a bird species can go extinct, but humans do, and there is truly something beautiful in humanity. It also alienates us otherkin where our kintypes are actually very close to humanity—drakons are protectors of human houses, pantries, and givers of health. My kintype is bound by humanity yet there is barely any representation for otherkin such as myself.
