I'm procrastinating actual life tasks, so I will ABSOLUTELY take an excuse to talk.
Lemme get distracted with Australian archaeology for a bit and give you 3 things about Australian archaeology I very excitedly discussed with Reid over the course of class prep (I wont subject you to more than that)
Not archaeology, but Indigenous context and diversity
One of my all-time over-talked topics (not that its ever going to stop me) is the importance of recognising the diversity of Indigenous peoples in Australia, both in terms of the vast array of different Aboriginal nations that exist and their diversity of culture, as well as the inclusion of Torres Strait Islander people, who i feel like always seem to get overlooked on an international scale. (I grew up in the state that the Torres Strait is in as a child, and so went to a school with a number of students from there, and remember being delighted to be taught children's songs when very small). Their all too common lack of recognition when it comes to Australia's Indigenous people devastates me who grew up in a context with both Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in equal amounts. Both from the standpoint of being peoples and cultures worthy of respect and recognition, and also for the super important role that the Torres Strait Islands played in Australia's Indigenous land rights legal cases.
2. Tasmanian Aboriginal peoples and archaeology
On with the topic of re-correcting misconceptions, the importance of the recognition of Tasmania's long and enduring Indigenous peoples. Tasmania has a very dark and genocidal colonial history, from which came the rather horrifying claim that Tasmania's Aboriginal peoples had been "made extinct" alongside other native animals. This is an all too common myth, which thus removes a lot of the agency of Aboriginal communities in Tasmania. This statement lumping attempted genocide along with animal extinction is horrifying enough.
But to make matters worse this so called "fact" has continued in public conception of Tasmania and it's Aboriginal peoples for the past 200 years, and is only recently being "corrected" from both public conception, as well as actual legal documents. Reid's included a good public-facing article about the recent removal of this statement from within world heritage list documentation. I highly encourage anyone to go have a look into Tasmania's current Aboriginal culture and past history. It is a place of both amazing culture, diversity and examples of human environmental mitigation, as well as the attempted genocide of (in addition to further very very dark actions) against Aboriginal peoples. I'm super encouraging of everyone getting a better understanding of peoples and histories that have been commonly disinformation-alised.
3. Oral histories in Australia
I will literally never not be excited about oral histories and Songlines in Australia. I 100% recommend people looking into this topic, as well as anthropology research into the history of Songlines (particularly the large ones like the Seven Sisters Songline). I think it does a lot to show the depth of environmental understanding that Aboriginal people had, which is missed a lot in archaeological discussions. While its incredibly infuriating that it is a perspective that needs to be countered, i think the complexity and accurate passing down of oral histories and songlines does a lot to counter the perceptions of Australiaâs Indigenous peoples as âprimitiveâ. The further research that has recently gone into various oral histories relating to geographic events such as these does an amazing job at corroborating the thousands of years of Indigenous voices, who are finally being believed and recognised by modern scientific research (x) (x) (x) (x).

I'm in charge of teaching my very own class this semester, which means I have full control over the course and I can do pretty much whatever I want. I was given a hand-me-down syllabus and overall I'm not changing much because this is my first time doing something like this and I don't want to get too into the weeds.
But the course is Ancient Civilizations, and we're getting at AUSTRALIA WEEK, babeyyy!!!
I've taken a version of this class and seen examples for a couple more, and I don't think I've ever encountered Australia in a context like this. Ancient Civ classes tend to focus on urban centers and monumental architecture, which is (partially) the result of Western bias for what counts as a "civilization" and means that a lot of cultures get left out.
With Mice's help, I've been learning about early Australian archaeology, and there is SO MUCH TO LEARN! Way too much to fit into a single week, but classes like this are really only capable of giving a very general overview. Anyway, here are some of the readings I'm having my students do:

What Do I Bring as an Interpreter?
To start my final blog post, I think it's fitting to reflect on all that has shaped me throughout the semester. In the reading for each week, we have discussed audiences and methods of communication for interpretation, as well as the various realms of interpretation such as music, art, and science. But something that rings true in most people is their own personal ethics. It is something that you build from very young, and doesn't have many changes over time. While there are objective rights and wrongs in the world, ethics can be more ambiguous. So coming into the interpretation scene, it has been important to get a major sense of what's important ethically. With this, I'll begin with the beliefs that I think would be beneficial to be brought.
I am less sturdy in my beliefs compared to most people. I believe it's important to be diligent and accepting of others potential ideas. This can be especially true when considering people have "invisible knapsacks" (Gallavan, 2005). We've considered how other people's experiences shape how they interpret the world, and what better way to start my interpretation of the world with other people at the forefront. Since beliefs are very subjective, the ability to adapt and accept ideas outside your own is my most needed belief. While this adaptability is important, the middle ground is not always the right solution. If two people believe that 2+2=4 and 2+2=5, the right answer doesn't become 4.5. With this, I think its important to hold your ground on certain topics and opinions. But knowing when to do this is difficult. My belief is that this is innate to oneself, and knowing your limit will come automatically. In interpretation, my belief is that everyone will have their own set of opinions, and that is their privilege to do so. A different ethical belief I hold relates back to the middle ground argument, where some people will be better suited to interpret certain environments. As stated in Beck et al., (2018), indigenous individuals have been interpreting their natural environments for thousands of years, and non-locals cannot interpret these environments with the same level of intricacy and nuance. But for me personally, a fresh set of eyes on the environment can perhaps bring back some commonly overlooked things for the experts, so everyone has their own part to play.
This translates into the responsibilities I would have as an interpreter, and for this it really depends on the context. If I were to be interpreting the environment I grew up around to someone outside of it, I would take up the responsibility of sharing. This is in the sense that my opinion is sought after and wanted by someone else, where ethically it is unjust to inject yourself and your insights onto the unwilling. However in this case, assuming other want to hear, it's also my responsibility to make sure that I am catering my insight in a way suitable to my audience. This could be to those of different ages, races, genders, and backgrounds, or it can even be just those with different learning styles (Beck et al., 2018). This is my responsibility because if you do not convey your interpretations in these ways, the message or story you are trying to tell may be lost. We can relate this back to the blog prompt on historical interpretation, where historians and cultural story tellers have had their tales convoluted and misinterpreted maliciously or just by accident. This ruined the accuracy and authenticity of the work, which is something I do not want to do (Beck et al., 2018). Another shared responsibility between myself and all other interpreters out there will be maintenance of their interpretation. This could be your local trails or parks, all the way up to your country and the planet. In the way that one interpreter cares for their specific interpretation, we all must care for the larger group of them that makes up our world. By doing this, we can ensure the future of interpretation for our children and theirs after them. I believe that it is paramount that interpreter give those younger the opportunity to interpret in the future, and that requires our planet to stay healthy. Children are the most capable of interpreting and absorbing the outside world in their first years, and they develop very quickly through different learning styles, as an interpreter to these children I'd be responsible for creating activities that boost their developing abilities (Beck et al., 2018). By doing this I could aid in ensuring a future for interpretation.
This final section is the most difficult for me to convey, as I've just noted that interpretation should be catered for your audience and not yourself. But I feel that the approach I most resonate with tells a story. A picture paints a thousand words, and nature is a million pictures. Guiding people through a natural wonder is the best approach to create wonder and have audiences take charge for something you care about. You would tell this story while moving through nature, to keep them on their toes. The story would have abrupt changes of pace with constant highs and lows. It would be mapped steadily, to keep flow throughout. Their would be puzzles to solve, and give a sense of accomplishment after completion. But most importantly, the stories meaning would be at the forefront. The stories message would be one I personally am passionate about, and I could answer any follow ups with ease. This is my ideal approach, one that goes through all the learning styles in some way, in an attempt to reach the most people.
I have learned a lot through this course, but most the important thing I've learned in my opinion is to not lose yourself. Regardless of how you have to change your interpretation to meet your audiences needs, don't lose the passion you have for your interpretation. Maintaining your passion will allow it to spread to many others, and that has been the goal of the course all along.

Research Questions
The research questions I presented in this class were:
How can communication design be used to challenge female beauty standards impacting physically disabled women?
How can collage be used change perspectives on female beauty standards and boost self-confidence in physically disabled women?
How can visual explorations of disabled perspectives be used to challenge global beauty standards and societal perspectives?
From talking to Marcos, the bottom two questions are definitely stronger than the first. The bottom two situate my work more into a specific practise and although this will probably change the further I get into my project, it allows me too look at a narrower field. I've also been considering looking at abstract portraiture which both Marcos and my group said I should work into a question.
Marcos also mentioned that the last question is stronger by using the word challenge. It reflects more what I am trying to do and according to Marcos reflects my personality. Based on this feedback I've reworked the question to have two different paths, focusing on collage and abstract portraiture.

I definitely need to narrow these down, but my group also helped me brainstorm some different words. Non-conforming, conventional beauty, and feminist could be some interesting ones to explore.
While showing these to Marcos we had a pretty interesting conversation around the word disability. Marcos did not feel the word was right to fit in the keywords because of the negative way he had been taught perceived it. As a word, 'Disability' is not inherently negative. It just describes any long-term impairment that may prevent disabled people from equal participation in society due to challenges and barriers that society presents. Society has given the word disability negative connotations. We have been told so many times through various forms of media that being disabled is bad and disability is a thing to look down on. The word itself is not a bad word. I do not think calling myself disabled is a bad thing. It did take me a long time to reverse society's brainwashing and realise that disability isn't a bad thing, it is just different and that is ok.
It is really important to me to keep using this word to describe myself and other disabled people. To remove the word disability to something that feels nicer would feel wrong. It would further perpetuate the stereotype that disability is bad and I want my work to empower disabled people and embrace disability. It is just a word after all.
Annotation

The feedback from my annotation was pretty positive and my group and I had a good discussion around what could be improved. The main point was since my topic is on female beauty standards, something that is rapidly and continuously changing, I need to make sure that my sources are up to date. My source was written in 2003, the year I was born, so it's safe to say that things have changed a lot since then and I need to be careful when selecting sources. Cross-referencing older sources with newer ones could potentially help this.

Ranjana Lipi: Efforts to revive the ancient script
What is Ranjana Lipi
The diverse culture of Nepal is home to many ethnic groups with over 100 various languages. In Nepal Mandal (the current Kathmandu Valley) from the 14th to 18th century, Nepal Bhasa was the official language but was replaced by Nepali after the Gorkha Kingdom was established. This Sino-Tibetan language is spoken by Newars, indigenous inhabitants of Kathmandu Valley, and has remained alongside Nepali as another prominent language of Nepal. Nepal Bhasa is written in Nepal Lipi, which has nine different variations. An artistic and distinctive script, Ranjana Lipi is one of those widely visible scripts among all the Nepal Lipi. It is commonly used to write the Buddhist Mantra âOm mane padme humâ in Buddhist Prayer Wheel.
Besides, it has been used on stone and copper plate inscriptions, coins, palm-leaf documents, and Hindu and Buddhist manuscripts. Ranjana script has not only been used in the Nepal but also in Tibet, where it is known as Lanydza. Tibetans typically decorate temple walls, prayer wheels, and Mandalas with this script and use it on the title pages of Tibetan texts.
Current situation
Throughout history, Nepal Bhasa and its script have faced many threats. Nepal Lipi has struggled a lot to maintain its existence in the history of Nepal. With the aim of preservation of Ranjana Lipi, Nepal Lipi Guthi came into existence. The institution, founded by Bikash Man Sheshya in 1980, has remarkably helped in spreading awareness about the importance of Nepal Bhasa.
Although organizations have successfully increased visibility among the people in recent decades, there is still much to do. Today, young adults are primarily aware, but few understand it or know how to write it.
However, the current situation among youngsters seems even more worrying, as many have not even heard of it. Younger generations need more opportunities and enticements to study the endangered Ranjana Lipi. Otherwise, it is in danger of vanishing.Â
Recently, Community Homestay Network have also acted and organized the event Ranjana Lipi & Aila in effort to support the endangered script. In addition to giving a wonderful cultural experience for the participants, this event has provided an opportunity for Kirtipur Community Homestay, as two of its representatives, Buddhilal Maharjan and Gyan Maharjan, facilitated as trainers to spread the script to reach more people.
We had an interview with the men, where important topics were discussed. In the conversation, Buddhilal and Gyan talk about their lives and challenges with the endangered Ranjana Lipi. They also discuss current and potential opportunities for its preservation.
Ranjana Lipi & Kirtipur Community Homestay
âIt is not just a script, but the heritage and pride of all Nepali people,â Buddhilal Maharjan states. âRanjana Lipi is the soul of the whole nation, and without the existence of it, the existence of the whole nation is questionable,â Gyan Maharjan continues. The men share an interest in the ancient Newari script and a passion for teaching it to others.
Buddhilal's Encounter: Nepal Lipi Guthi Connection
Retired jobholder, Buddhilal, and Gyan, who works in water supply, both have their roots in the ancient town of Kirtipur on the outskirts of Kathmandu. When discussing how they got involved with Ranjana Lipi, Buddhilal recalls: âI got to know about Ranjana Lipi through an organisation, Nepal Lipi Guthi, which was established for the script in 2036 B.S. (1979 AD).â
During Nepal Sambat (the New Year of the lunisolar calendar), he remembers how he helped the community by writing banners in Ranjana Lipi. Gyan, in turn, says that his first encounter with Ranjana Lipi happened during school days, around 2038 B.S. (1981 AD). âSeeing Ranjana Lipi on temples and banners got me very fascinated about the authenticity of it, and as a result, I used to make tattoos with a ballpoint to my hand when I was a kid,â he recalls with amusement.
After Gyan had learned more about Ranjana Lipi in 2052 B.S. (1995 AD), he started working in a small organisation established in Kirtipur, Nepal Lipi Parishad, through which they ran a month-long workshop to generate awareness. âHowever, the workshop ended up short when we were halted by Maoist (The Communist Party of Nepal),â Gyan closes the story.
In the interview, both Buddhilal and Gyan often mention the government of Nepal, which has not supported the spread of Ranjana Lipi much but once even limited it. This has served as motivation for them to teach it to others: âJust to go against the government, we started to teach in small communities,â Buddhilal reveals. Gyan mentions that his motivation, besides the governmentâs ignorance, came from believing the writing style was endangered. To preserve it, he wishes to teach it not just to the Newari community but to other communities and foreigners.
Challenges and preservation of the endangered script
Gyan and Buddhilal consider the biggest challenge in preserving Ranjana Lipi to be the governmentâs limited efforts. The government is responsible for attracting young people to learn Ranjana Lipi, but there has been no action: âPeople donât see any advantage of learning Ranjana Lipi. Neither can they earn from learning the script, nor is there any job guarantee from the script.
Thatâs why people would rather learn Japanese or Korean because learning those languages can guarantee a job in a foreign countryâ, Gyan explains. They both believe that the government of Nepal could play a pivotal role in preserving the script.
Government's Role
According to them, to protect Ranjana Lipi, the government could organize workshops and arrange some opportunities to earn income through the script. âToday, people are also very busy and occupied with their own stuff and have limited time to learn new things. Even taking the time to learn Ranjana Lipi is a huge thingâ, Gyan ponders other challenges.
Besides that, the men wish the government would take Ranjana Lipi into account in the school curriculum; they believe that it would be helpful if the script was still used in the writings in temples as well as in the products people use in modern days. âTo keep it alive, Ranjana Lipi could be incorporated in poems, books, childrenâs cartoons, and songbooks, and even international short stories could be translated into Ranjana Lipi,â Buddhilal adds.
When asked about other methods for its preservation, the conversation turns to young people and how the nepalese calligraphy could be used in the products aimed at them: âEspecially for younger generations, tattoos, posters, keyrings, lockets, and souvenirs would attract them,â Gyan considers.Â
Digital opportunities for Ranjana Lipi are also current, and the men see that there are many of them. Buddhilal digs out his cell phone from his pocket and introduces an application called Nepal Lipi â Ranjana Lipi. âPeople can use the app to convert Devanagari to Ranjana Lipi. I think it is the best platform to promote Ranjana Lipi,â he praises the app.
The Ranjana Lipi & Aila workshop
âWe are thankful for the opportunity that Community Homestay Network offers people. Because of the event, we got the chance to reach more people,â Gyan expresses his gratitude. The event Ranjana Lipi & Aila has been held twice now, and there is more to come. It is inspired by the âPaint and sipâ type of events, but instead of contemporary paintings, papers are decorated with Ranjana Lipi, while traditional Aila is served as a drink. At the event, the trainers teach participants the basics of the script while offering an opportunity to immerse themselves in Newari culture.
Community-Led Preservation Efforts
Community Homestay Network is not the only organization that have organized such events regarding Ranjana Lipi. As Buddhilal mentioned, there have also been efforts made by Nepal Lipi Guthi; an institution focused on the Newar language and script: âAlong with this event, there was this event called Calijatra. It is an open participation event, and people would come and write down their names in Ranjana Lipi and learn the basics of it.â Established in 2015, Calijatra has, until now, organized over 40 workshops all over Nepal (Khadgi, 2020)Â
âThe Newari community appreciates the efforts to teach Ranjana Lipi from different organisations. As there are not any efforts from the government to teach it, people have taken it upon themselves to preserve the endangered scriptâ, Buddhilal explains.
Peopleâs efforts have borne fruit because these days Ranjana Lipi can be seen more in different places, for example âin letter pads, headings of newspapers and on boards of government offices,â he lists. Gyan thinks that these kinds of events are essential for people interested in cultures and also help young people who nowadays donât know much about the script get to know it. He notes that Advertising through social media such as Facebook and Instagram could attract youth to learn it.Â
Community Impact
The men discuss that the eventâs impact on their community would be even more significant if CHN expanded it to different neighbourhoods. This way, more people of different ages and backgrounds would be reached. âIf we keep on organising this kind of event, it might inspire other organisations to organise the same kind of events, too,â Buddhilal mentions. Gyan, in turn, brings up the possibility that a package with more time rather than just an event could attract more participants and be more effective.
When asked about their experience as trainers in the two past events, both say they were happy to see the participants enjoying the event. âThe enjoyment from participantsâ was fuel for us, and we are looking forward to future events with great enthusiasm,â Buddhilal adds in the conversation.
Gyan mentions he found the event very interesting, not only because of teaching but also interesting because of many other Newari cultural components. âI want to highlight the almost endangered culture of the Newari community, like serving Saakha: ti (traditional Newari beverage) while welcoming guests,â he says. âNot just the script, but I want the culture of the Newari people to be promoted at this event,â Buddhilal agrees.
Conclusion
The historical significance of Ranjana Lipi is not limited regionally only to Nepal. âTalking about the historical importance of Ranjana Lipi, it can be stressed back to many Asian countries, such as Tibet, China, and Japan. It has travelled the world with prayer wheels.â Buddhilal explains.
The men emphasize the importance of Ranjana Lipi as a valuable cultural heritage: âMost of our historical and religious books are written in Ranjana Lipi. They are not just books but heritages, so to preserve this kind of heritage and obtain knowledge from the books, its preservation is requiredâ, Buddhilal states.
As a valuable part of Nepalâs rich cultural heritage, Ranjana Lipi has united the nationâs identity, tying together different generations and groups of people. Like many other ancient scripts, Ranjana Lipi has also faced difficulties and was in danger of disappearing.
Nevertheless, it continues to flourish today, for which we can thank the efforts of the organizations and the strong unified identity of the Newari community, with the power of which they have kept it alive, passing the heritage from generation to generation. An excellent example of how even one event can arouse others and create something bigger is Ranjana Lipi & Aila.
The event has inspired members of the Kirtipur Community Homestay to take the reins of preservation by spreading the script among their community and teaching it to those interested in it, including tourists. We must protect cultural heritage as it is part of the past, part of ourselves, and a source of identity.

What I learned From Going On a 7-Day Fast
I just got off of a 7 day fast of no food or sugar. All I allowed myself was Water, Coffee, and salt. And today I wanted to share what I learned from that experience

My reasons for trying a fast is
I wanted to challenge myself. no diet reason No protest reason. no religious reason. Just wanted to see what it was like to fast for 7 days.
I wanted to see what my thoughts when in that type of hardship was. I didn't focus on food but I noticed fast food signs everywhere.

Day 2-3
Hungry at times But also noticed darker urine and no need to go poo
the internet says that I wasn't getting enough water despite drinking 3 gallons of water in those two days alone
Day 4-5
the hunger is still there from time to time along with the darker urine but it was beginning to lighten up to a bright yellow
Oily stool
Day 6-7
On normal enough days, nothing exciting happened. I was even able to go get my wife some food and not be tempted
But I also went shopping and I could smell the food everywhere. Even the rotisserie chicken from across wal-mart.
Results
I showed myself that I could do hard things and this one didn't do the wear that the 22km walk did back in 2022. I do have worries that I may have slowed my metabolism down a bit but that is my biggest worry
 Summary
In this episode of The Relaxed Male, we delve into the topic of challenging ourselves and the importance of embracing hardships. As the host of the show, I have a deep understanding of the struggles men face in their everyday lives, whether it be divorce, work-related issues, or family troubles. I am committed to helping men find the courage and confidence to relax and enjoy life to the fullest. We begin by discussing the need to push ourselves and do hard things, as our modern lifestyles have made us comfortable. Our ancestors faced regular hardships and challenges, such as the Great Depression, which forced them to adjust to difficult circumstances. It is time for us to adopt the same mindset and embrace challenges. We recognize that our eating habits have shifted from consuming food for sustenance to seeking comfort, which has contributed to the obesity problem we face today.
To challenge this mentality, I recently embarked on a seven-day fast and completed a physically demanding challenge of carrying 22 pounds on my back while walking 22 kilometers. Although I faced difficulties during the journey, pushing my limits has always been something I enjoy. While there have been failures along the way, such as attempting a long bike ride, I have learned to recognize when something is beyond my capabilities. After completing the walking challenge, I realized that I had been neglecting other areas of my life, such as taking care of my house. This lack of fulfillment led me to understand the importance of pushing myself further.
During the seven-day fast, I had to navigate through various physical and mental challenges. Hunger was to be expected, but it was manageable. With increased water consumption and proper electrolyte balance, I was able to sustain myself. As the days progressed, I faced temptations in truck stops and grocery stores, with enticing aromas constantly surrounding me. However, I remained focused on my fasting journey and resisted the urge to give in to these temptations.
Throughout the fast, I became more mindful of my food cravings and worked to change unhealthy eating habits. I introduced healthier snack options and limited my indulgences. On the sixth and seventh days, I allowed myself a reward of cherry vanilla ice cream, acknowledging the need for balance. Winner Stage-Left, or: Did you know any MHA characterâs position in the frame is a spoiler?
(Subtitle: Whoâs gonna stop me from converting other old Discord conversations into meta? You? YOU? Doubtful.)
Honestly itâs just embarrassing that I havenât made this post yet.
Iâve talked before about horizontal and vertical design on the faces of MHA characters, but thereâs another visual trick thatâs ever-so-present in MHA--nay, in all of shounen manga and anime--that deserves at least a cursory discussion. Ever since I was a wee tyke, I noticed an odd tendency in anime to always place the winner of a fight (or...childrenâs card game) on the right of the screen. I never thought anything of it for a long time, but a few years ago a friend mentioned something about it to me in passing. This friend was very unfamiliar with anime but had somehow heard something about this phenomenon and its potential origins. Naturally, I had to look into it.
The research I did wasnât as conclusive as I would have liked, but I did discover something about the topic. What I discovered was that in traditional forms of Japanese theater such as kabuki and noh, stage-left is considered a superior position to stage-right. Someone of a superior ranking to the other would stand stage-left. Sometimes this âsuperiorityâ would be as simple as social ranking or whatever.
But then you have various anime with confrontation via martial arts or sports or fights where "stage-left" can take on a different meaning.
As we explore this concept as presented in MHA, I would like to start with this back cover of tankoban #33.

For clarityâs sake, note that Izuku is looking towards the right of the page while Katsuki is looking to the left side. Stage-left is determined by looking to the left of an actor when they stand on stage and face the audience (in other words, from the audienceâs perspective, stage-left is to the right). Izuku and Katsuki in the above page are facing each other, and so on-screen Izuku would be standing stage-right and Katsuki would be standing stage-left.
But what does it all mean?
(It means Katsuki is the hero in this moment.)
I wrote above that in anime confrontations "stage-left" can take on a new meaning. Specifically, the concept of what "superior ranking" is can be played with. We end up with the storyâs hero often being stage-left. Or sometimes this positioning is broadcasting who will be the winner of the match. Go watch an older anime like Dragonball Z or Yugioh and take note of each match-up: who is standing on the left and who is on the right? Then guess who wins the match. The statistics are pretty clear on this: stage-left is most often (if not always) the winner.
But in many of these older anime, the positioning of the characters remains the same for the entire match. Thatâs not the case with MHA; Horikoshi loves to change up who is standing where throughout a match (or dialogue, if you will), so itâs important to pay attention to whatâs happening when positions get swapped around.
With regards to the above image and the events of Deku vs Class 1-A, consider who is positioned where and when. Just think about these images:
Here in chapter 319, Izuku is stage-left. The depiction is supposed to prime us to believe he is stronger than Class 1-A, which technically he is--in a contest of each individualâs strength.
But then if you read chapter 320, you'll find that once the action starts, Class 1-A is almost always standing stage-left of Izuku, specifically when they're trying to talk him down.
The whole ice ramp chase sequence in chapter 321 shows Izuku fleeing towards stage-right while the others are stage-left and chase after him.
And then you have this moment, where Iida passes Izuku just to get more stage-right of him. This is an interesting way to play with the âwinnerâ side of the stage. In order to save Izuku, Iida is elevating him from the self-destructive âSymbol of Peace" back into Izuku Midoriya their classmate. Izuku, their friend and one piece of class 1-A, is meant to be the âheroâ they wish to save, not the loner Deku whom Izuku tried to become.
And then we get to think about what this staging means in the apology.
Katsuki stands stage-left, which weâd expect him to do as the forecast "winner." But this is such an interesting take on staging because Katsuki is essentially debasing himself by bowing to Izuku with his apology--but itâs in order to win, in order to get Izuku back, in order to achieve his goal of saving Izuku. It's almost paradoxical, but it's basically broadcasting to us the reading audience whom we should be cheering for: Katsuki.
This isnât the first time MHA has played with positioning like this. The sports festival is one of my favorite examples. If you look at how the anime depicts the match-ups and who wins each match, the matches can be listed in stage-right vs stage-left format (bold names are the winners):
Midoriya vs Shinsou Todoroki vs Sero Kaminari vs Ibara Iida vs Hatsume Ashido vs Aoyama Yaoyorozu vs Tokoyami Kirishima vs Tetsutetsu (draw) Uraraka vs Bakugou

And if we take a closer look at the anomalous stage-right winners:
Midoriya vs Shinsou ends with Midoriya's victory, but Shinsou is portrayed as the hero we should sympathize with in the end. Thus, he wins the attention of Aizawa and the audience enough to give him a shot at the hero course, which fulfills his original goal in competing.
Todoroki vs Sero ends with Todoroki's victory, but the end is perceived by Midoriya as "sad," and the audience ends up cheering for Sero when it's all over. Todoroki is still a captive of his hatred for his father, and in that sense he is the loser.
Iida vs Hatsume ends with Iida's win on a technicality. Hatsume clearly has control over the entire match and only loses because she wants to, and even then only after she presents all the gadgets she wanted to, which achieves her goal in competing.
Ashido vs Aoyama can be considered an outlier with Ashido's win until we remember Aoyama as the unwitting traitor may have actually wanted to lose? Either that or this fight is meant as a joke to subvert our expectations because of Mineta's call to see Ashido's underwear at the start. Either way, even if Ashido starts on stage-right, she actually swings her way over to stage-left for her surprise victory at the end.
And then we have Bakugou vs Todoroki, which actually becomes Todoroki vs Bakugou as soon as the story makes it clear to us that Torodoki is wavering on whether or not he'll use his fire. Bakugou switches over to stage-left before the end, and the final non-clash keeps him there, even if that's not how he wants things to play out (he certainly would have a hard time considering himself the âwinner.â)
Another one worth rewatching while keeping this positioning phenomenon in mind is absolutely âDeku vs Kacchan, Part 2.â Holy shit, they swap places so damn often, and it's always about what they're saying or doing in the moment.
Whatâs wild is how in the manga, this sequence is played with Katsuki stage-right...
...but in the anime heâs played as stage-left.
And just think about how that affects the portrayal. In the manga version, is Katsuki being portrayed as a victim who needs saving by hero (stage-left) Izuku? Is Katsukiâs despair the trial for the hero to overcome? In the anime version, is Katsukiâs anxiety meant to be relatable and sympathetic for the audience? Is Izukuâs ignorance of Katsukiâs true feelings the obstacle for hero (stage-left) Katsuki to overcome?
Stage-left is even played with when the boys are airing their grievances! Whoever is speaking gets to occupy the hero spot:
And of course thereâs my favorite example from this face-off: the ending where stage-right Katsuki, refusing to lose, grabs Izuku's sleeve and forcefully switches them around to pin Izuku from stage-left.

We have a winner!
These examples, of course, are not the entire list. Read the chapters or watch the episode and count how many times they swap places. It puts that whole sequence in the anime where the camera swoops around the boys as they clash in the sky into a whole new perspective (like the story-boarders just gave up on all the position swaps and pulled out the 3-D graphics in protest.)
So give it a shot next time you read/watch MHA and see if you notice these positions. I obviously pay the most attention to the ones with Izuku and Katsuki (their stage positions get played around with a lot). Consider the first anime opening when they're drawn in one positioning as kids but swap when they hit middle school. And the creek flashback scene? Izuku offers his hand to Katsuki from stage-left. And in the PLW arc? Izuku vs Tomura in the sky? Izuku starts out stage-left, but they swap when Izuku goes feral and Katsuki starts panicking. Katsuki saves Izuku by traveling from stage-left. In the final panel of chapter 285, we see Katsuki still positioned stage-left as heâs stabbed, which highlights his heroism.
Oh, and hereâs the new part Iâm adding that wasnât in the Discord conversation that spawned this meta: Katsuki vs TomurAFO. I just find it so telling wherever Katsuki is positioned.
Chapter 359: Katsuki is portrayed as stage-left.


Chapter 360: Katsuki is forced stage-right by TomurAFO...
...but the heroes pluck Katsuki back into stage-left...
...where he stays.

Chapter 362: Katsuki attacks from stage-left and continues to circle around TomurAFO to stage-left.

...but as soon as he expresses his desire for an autograph, he unexpectedly moves to stage-right...
...and takes a fatal blow.

Talk about a visual plot twist!
(I also happen to think Tomuraâs positioning throughout this arc is very curious, and I will continue to pay attention to it.)

What's your hunch on what could be in Louis' documentary? I for one, hope he talks about his improvements in learning music and hopefully about his fans, the good and the bad of it

This was a fun question so thanks! Iâm going to split this into things I think are likely topics and then a couple of thoughts on what I hope for! But Iâm really very excited about this.
Iâm curious about the period of time over which this has been filmed, the description mentions following him from when 1D ended until really very recently, and Iâm intrigued by the home footage thing. What I am first curious about is whether the home footage is going to be used to plug a gap between 1D ending and the decision to start filming for a documentary, and potentially over periods of lockdown. Or whether this has been something Louis has been working on for longer than I realised. I do think the title is interesting.
I think both of the things you mention are likely to be included, and Iâd love to see more of what we saw in the AFHF doc where Louis was working with Helene, I thought that was a really great aspect. Iâd like to see/hear a lot more about the making of LT2 but Louis has had some pretty tight boundaries on what heâll discuss so far. I would love to hear more from Louis too about fans, because from a fan view his fandom seems like itâs as much a burden as a joy, and Iâd expect he has some complicated feelings about it - but I think itâs unlikely weâll hear too much about it. I think itâs more likely that the fan stuff might focus around fan footage.
Since the description starts from the hiatus, and mentions One Direction, Iâm going to guess weâll get more reflection from Louis on how he navigated that period after the band and before walls, the challenges etc. And probably the bit Iâm most interested in is what Louis wants to talk about, how he wants to talk about it and which bits he thinks are important, as well as the things he doesnât.
Iâm also interested in how much of Louisâ personal life this touches on, and how that is going to be framed. No one will be surprised to hear that Iâm actually really very interested in how his relationship with Eleanor and his role as a father is navigated, but also how much of his family is included. He obviously had lots of family visit at various points during tour, and itâs clear theyâre pretty close.
I think the thing just now thatâs a bit harder to guess without seeing the promo is who is the target audience? Who is Louis hoping to reach?

Thoughts on Xia Yanâs Anniversary/Kiss Date
Not a translation, but rather an unleashing of the many thoughts I had for his date because it made me feel so many emotions and think so many things;;

Date Translation
Preamble
Tears of Themisâ 1st anniversary features one of the most significant in-story events you can view within an otome game - the confession event between MC and respective male leads. The gravity of this confession event, however, is intensified with respect to the ML Xia Yan, as their emotions towards each other is not the only focus of said confession - he must also reveal the heartbreaking truth that his life is likely to end in three years.Â
In the below sections, I will discuss the significance of various components that comprise Xia Yanâs anniversary date. My primary focuses will be on Xia Yanâs internal struggles, his care for MC, and the nature of the confession, and I aim to ultimately express why this date had such a major effect on me and whoa if youâre still reading this rambling part, I applaud you. Iâm really just doing a fancy thoughtdump here.
The Nature of the Confession Event
From the beginning, XY never intended for the confession to be full of pomp and circumstance - and this was out of concern for MC, fearing that she would be too swept up in emotion to make it. Based on how the other guysâ cards look (them being outside and MCâs all dressed up), I assume that there was some ceremony-like aspect to their respective confessions, and I think that this draws a stark contrast to XYâs (who staunchly refused Yang Xiaoâs offer to help make his confession just as ceremonial). In XYâs, MCâs not dressed up the way she is for the others, and both have been drenched in rain and are dissolving into tears of sadness as they speak. In addition, their desires are conflicting (rather than a situation where both parties confess and get together, and thus have coinciding interests) - despite what XY has said before, he does not want MC to be with him, while MC wants the exact opposite. Itâs not a beautiful or gorgeous scene by design - instead, itâs very raw, very çźç as the two lay bare their own painful emotions, discuss/cry about heavy topics, and show very vulnerable sides to each other, trying to get through to the other person.Â
Speaking of showing vulnerability, the fact that Xia Yan is so anguished by what he has to say that he has to sit down and cry hits particularly hard because he has always, always tried to put on a strong face in front of MC. Whenever his illness strikes and MC sees it, such as in aquarium date or Neruda poem date, heâll smile and/or joke about it after. When the two were talking about his posthumous letters during the RRG date, he still had a calm smile on his face. Even when he talked about being shoved into a car trunk to be âdisposed ofâ, he was still calmly smiling. As MC noted, his job has taught him to have extreme control over his emotions, so itâs almost overwhelming, trying to imagine how much sadness pushed him to that point.
Pathetic fallacy also plays a part in increasing the impact that the confession event had. In the days leading up to the last part of the date, storms keep striking suddenly, such that itâs even described as âstrangeâ. Storms are, of course, generally associated with less-pleasant things, such as conflict, anger, depression, difficulty, and so on. The meaning behind why they appeared suddenly or frequently is a little harder to understand, but my assumption for the frequency of the storms (rather than an ongoing storm or gloom) reflects how things could not completely âclear upâ (despite uplifts in emotion from time to time) until they confronted each other with their feelings. During the confrontation, not only is the storm still going on, but theyâre also harshly drenched in the cold rainwater. It is only after the kiss, after their interests finally coincide, that the storm lifts and the beautiful starry sky casts its light on Xia Yan, who was holding the majority of the conflict/sadness/depression between the two of them. (This is also highlighted in how MC notes that Xia Yan feels slightly cold (during the kiss), and she tries to transfer her warmth over to him, trying to alleviate that heavy emotion thatâs wrapped itself around him.)Â
The Location
The attic of their old home remains an important location for these two, and I pretty much canât think of a better choice to set the confession. It contains their childhood memories, and it also came into play during Xia Yanâs first birthday after his return (i.e. the idea of continuing to make memories there). Itâs also interesting to note that Xia Yan, from his rational mindset, did not intend to see MC⌠yet he still came to this place - a place that was equally meaningful to both of them, and a place where heâs likely to get lost in emotion. He may be restraining his emotions for MCâs good, yet they still show in small places. (At least, there doesnât seem to be any logical reason for him to be there, since he wasnât setting anything up thereâŚ)
The Humanizing and Internal Conflict of Xia Yan
I call it âhumanizingâ because Iâve done some commenting before on how Xia Yan has felt a little superhuman - so many skills everywhere, and rarely a moment of weakness. Now, this date really drives home that he is just human too, with the harsh reality of imminent death hanging over him (especially since we also learn a few more concrete details on exactly what his illness is). This point is brought into attention when he talks about how heâs neither able to be as brave as Schumann (who acted based on emotion) nor as silently strong as Brahms (who acted based on reason). Heâs pulled in so many directions for all the things he wants - a desire to stay by MCâs side and do so much with her, whether as family or as something more, versus his rational mindset that tells him to not see her at all, to disappear from her life after, or to push her away even after her confession. There was also his ârationallyâ created plan in which he would give her the letter and let her decide, yet he still tries to convince her to not be with him.Â
The Schumann/Brahms comparison shows how he keeps getting pulled back and forth between reason and emotion. He reveals his feelings to MC (Schumann), but wants her to make the optimal decision, which he believes is to not be with him (Brahms). He then kisses her after hearing her conviction (Schumann) and then gives her the gift thatâs linked to Brahms. In realizing that heâs not able to stick to either path, he calls himself a coward - but he doesnât need to be like either person. As MC says, his restraint is a part of his own background, and his emotional wavering is because of his care for MC - all in all, his motivations are because he is Xia Yan, not Schumann or Brahms.Â
Personal Story Chapter 2 Parallels
In Xia Yanâs personal chapter 2, Yang Xiao sets up the story of éś/Zero and ç丽čč/Marivisa to mirror MC and Xia Yan (respectively). The mention of what will bring Zero and MC happiness is starkly similar in these two situations:

Yes, the Zero/Marivisa story was intentionally made to parallel these two, so it might feel moot to compare them like this. However, I still really appreciated that they brought this discussion of what brings MC/Zero happiness back, especially since XYâs chapter 2 was very major in developing his character. Back then, MC is vehement in that Zero would have been happier spending all the time he could with Marivisa, as well as even having the choice to spend that time with her. I think that this part was instrumental in Xia Yan eventually deciding to tell her the truth and letting her make her own decision (as he explicitly stated to Yang Xiao in part 1 of the date). However, he still wasnât fully convinced by what MC said back in chapter 2, so we satisfyingly see this discussion of happiness come full circle by the end of this date, when Xia Yan finally trusts MC to make the best decision for herself.Â
Xia Yanâs Considerateness
Xia Yanâs enduring consideration for MC displays itself in nearly every single action within this date.Â
The flashback, when he thinks about MC potentially having to go through what the widow is now experiencing, and how his own happiness for three years isnât worth that
His conviction to give her the right to decide in this matter that involves both of them, because he canât be the one to decide everything
He insisted on not making it a romantic event, because he wants MC to make the best decision without having a mind clouded by emotion. Heâs also made peace with the idea of not being with MC, for the sake of her long-term happiness. All he wants is for her to know the truth of his feelings and illness.
His decision to still make MC a gift to retain some aspect of the romance in the confession (but he only gives the gift after MC has made her decision, again to ensure that her mind isnât clouded). I think the concept of the gift is particularly beautiful - the little, happy holograms of them inside the glass, as if ensuring that he will always be by her side in some way; the music that brings back their childhood memories and alludes to an enduring, quiet, and protecting love that puts the recipient first (i.e. Brahms to Clara); and the rainbow, which has its childhood memories and treasure implications that are already mentioned in the date, but it also reminded me of the miraculous double rainbow in his Lost Gold date. That double rainbow was the trigger for Xia Yan to proactively seek out a future with MC, when he took the initiative to ask MC if she could be with him to seek out more miracles. Overall, there are a lot of beautiful memories and implications wrapped up in that music box/snowglobe.Â
The little comical segment where he worries about the optimal time to deliver the letter, worrying about MCâs sleep or if sheâll be able to eat well.
His stress over what he shouldâve done after the letter was delivered, and how he immediately answered MCâs call out of pure worry, despite being so resolute about not answering her calls that heâd turned on airplane mode before.Â
Their ensuing discussion in part 3 is just full of Xia Yanâs consideration for MC at its peak -Â
Rather than being ecstatic about MCâs confession, his first instinct is to tell her to take a few days to think about it logically. (But really, emotions arenât logical to begin with, so itâs not like MC wouldâve stopped liking you after mulling it over for a few days, haha)
His immediate apology after yelling that he has to mention his death
His worry about how MC will cope after heâs gone, going so far as to saying that she would be better off with another manÂ
I think that this particular (above) line got a particularly visceral reaction from Xia Yan fans, including myself. Because like MC, our initial thoughts fell along the lines of âHow could I ever choose someone else when the only person I like is you? Thereâs just no way someone else could make me happierâŚâ. Another reaction that Iâve seen among Xia Yan fans (yep, including myself) is how we originally viewed the story in third-person, seeing âMCâ in the story, but this date (and this particular scene, where MC says nearly everything that I myself would want to say) dragged us into a first-person position.Â
The heartbreaking scene where Xia Yan cries from being unable to give MC the happiness that he wants to give her (or so he thinks).Â
Heâs just so painfully selfless. I also really like the line during the kiss where MC tries to transmit her warmth to him, trying to balance things out between them and have him feel better, when he had already written himself off by thinking that his happiness is better off sacrificed for hers.Â
Jin Xianâs Voice Acting
Jin Xianâs voice acting deserves a whole section to itself, because I think that he did an amazing job of portraying the intense emotions Xia Yan feels during the date. Just going to list some lines that really hit hard - both because of the content, and because of the voice acting that really considered how Xia Yan would be feeling then.Â

§éĄžĺĽšăăă(âI could pursue her. I could even marry her. I could live my last three years happily, without the slightest of regrets. But what about after? How will she cope on her own⌠Who will be with her as she handles this? Who will take care of herâŚâ) The ups and downs of this sectionâs voicing really hit hard.
The gentleness with which he speaks about what he plans to tell MC, especially the line 弚äťćĽé˝ćŻčżć ˇ (âSheâs always been like that.â)
Heâs so cute in Part 2!! The toneâs a lot happier and relaxed and itâs really nice to see and hear.Â
In part 3, the vehemence with which he talks about how the risks of MCâs work arenât comparable to his established time limit, which then softens into something sadder when he talks about how Yang Xiaoâs efforts havenât extended his time by much.Â
The intensity when he says ćĺż
饝说 ! (âI have to say it!â) (when MC reacts to him using the word âdeathâ), and how he immediately softens his tone after. But then his voice starts to rise again as he worries for how MC will bear his death⌠and then he takes a break to calm down, and then makes the suggestion of MC finding another man with a near-inflectionless tone that gradually slips into a whisper

The date was short relative to the other, super-long Themis dates, but Iâm personally alright with that because it places focus on the confession itself. It hit all the points that I personally was expecting for Xia Yanâs confession, including his past struggles with the idea of staying with MC, his confession about both his feelings and his illness, and how resolute MC is about staying with him vs. how hard he tries to get her to understand the implications of being him, considering that he doesnât have much time left.Â
I think nowâs a good time for the two of them to get married if theyâre well aware that Xia Yanâs time is limited, so Xia Yan, whereâs the ruby ring?Â
I wonder what implications this will have on the main story - e.g. will the rest of NXX find out about Xia Yanâs illness in Chapter 7.2? Or will they never know? Actually, I wonder if theyâll have MC be aware of his illness in the main story because⌠that implies his confession happened, which might anger fans of the other boys.Â

this is an essay post that was written in response to an in-depth discussion i was having with another person on a lot of topics. thatâs why itâs written like itâs addressing someone. because of that, it is a little confusing on its own (because the things in quotes are responding to things the other person said) but me and the person who runs this blog thought it would be better to make this a separate post, so that people who want to see this response can see it without it being attached to the person i was having the discussion with. we spoke to the person and they said that would be fine. with that being said, this is a very long post. if anyone finds parts of it useful, it will have served its original purpose.
so what i mean about it âmaking senseâ that dream became like that is that it kind of does, you know? iâm saying that the desires were always there. not that he was always willing to go so far for them, or even that they were as strong as they ended up being! after all, thereâs a difference between declaring war to reclaim land and people, and making a vault in order to take things that were important to people.
what he always did possess is a sort of âownershipâ of the server. and this was probably founded from the fact that it was, you know, his server. he wanted lâmanburg back because he didnât like that people came onto his server and then said he couldnât have something. and thatâs one of his primary points in his conversation with skeppy: the analogy he uses of someone coming into his house and saying he canât have a table.
and later, in the vault, this is the reason he gives for wanting control: that it is his server. he tells tommy it isnât supposed to be fair, it doesnât need to be fair, because fairness implies equality, and he doesnât see everyone else as having equal claim to the server. so thatâs what i mean when i say the signs were always there: his statements match upand paint a path through the story. true, you donât just âbecomeâ a bad person. thereâs no reason for him to suddenly get all weird and want ultimate control, if he was completely neutral and peaceful in the beginning. this is why his character is decently written!
and since the potential was there in the first place, thatâs what gave him the ability to or put him in danger of doing what he did.
so yeah, itâs true that his spiral was not only his fault, because even someone who thinks they own something is not going to just jump to the lengths that he did. he had other experiences, and saw how other people worked, and then was met by pushback from people when he wanted them all to do what he said. because his house analogy is lacking something: he owns the house, but everyone else lives there too.
it may be âhisâ server in that he pays upkeep fees, but that doesnât mean he deserves control over everything that happens on it! if your roommate goes âi want this table and you canât have itâ, even if the house belongs to you, itâs kind of weird to go âno you canât have it, itâs mineâ. especially if all the roommate wants the table for is so they can play monopoly or something with their group. and even more so if the roommate will let you play monopoly if you want to (remember the embassy?), and if you can just buy a new table then whatâs the point in getting upset over the one?
i just think you put a lot more of the responsibility on other characters. saying that all they did was villainize him and treat him as pure evil and break his boundaries is wrong because one, no, thatâs not all they did, itâs exaggerated, and two, he was also doing things to them! it did not come out of nowhere! and clearly, his mindset didnât come from nothing, so a personal flaw contributed to it! people who are innocent and care too much about others and are then mistreated do not do what dream did, and we know this because there is a character very similar to that: ranboo.
(i could talk about this for a super long time honestly. itâs very interesting how close they are, and since enderwalk ranboo is just ranboo with all his memories and he helped dream... thereâs clearly something that happened that heâs forgotten thatâs very important.)
hates conflict, tries to mediate things, cares about the people he loves to a fault. and we donât see him running around and telling people they canât build nations because it âdivides peopleâ! he has also been hurt and betrayed, but he still recognizes his responsibility to respect others and their agency. the difference between dream and ranboo is that one, dream has a spine, and two, dream thinks of the server as his. dreamâs belief is one of the driving causes of his actions.
itâs true that nobody deserves to lose half their friends at once. itâs also true that before he declared war, nobody had any actual negative feelings towards him. they made fun of him for saying his side had more women. he made fun of them for having none. it was playful banter. thatâs the thing about the hot dog stream: the tone is incredibly light. wilbur soot, known dramatic idiot, decided he was going to go play capitalism on a minecraft server. both tommy and wilbur at that point had been making various stupid attempts to gain âpowerâ. and none of this was treated seriously, because others were doing the same kinds of things.
you know how many times tommy logged on and got involved in small petty conflicts? pretty much none of them are mentioned in canon again, because at this point, there wasnât even much of a canon to get involved in. the smp at this point was a place for people to go and do bits. and invoking wilburâs joke hatred of tommy and those like him seems a little unfair. wilburâs main bit was calling tommy an annoying child. when wilbur was stealing the blaze rods, it was not an actual attempt to get power because it was not treated as such by anyone, it was treated with the exact seriousness that it deserved: sapnap and tubbo declared themselves the âpoliceâ.
what kind of actual control is going to come from taking blaze rods, especially on a server where you can just go get more? and itâs not like theft is really a crime on the server. everyone else chose to play into the bit.
itâs like now, when tommy shows up with a new idea and people who donât like him start claiming that this is proof that he never learned anything and he was actually bad all along. the church prime thing, lâsandburg, any time he steals something or is rude to jack manifold. because although semi-lore is fun, sometimes people treat it as serious lore when parts of it are not intended to be and then use it to imply things about the characters that donât line up with canon.
thatâs kinda off topic and not really about dream, so iâll move on
âiâd like to ask you to once again watch the actual stream.â
i mean, yeah. i did watch the stream. i donât know a lot about george, and i prefaced my thoughts at the start by saying that. obviously attempting to catch up after isnât as good as knowing the context and plot, (this sounds sarcastic but it is genuine iâm sorry sjhksjs) but i do want to offer this: itâs an opportunity to look at the plot in a different way. you say that you are on dreamâs side in this scene, and while having that bias alone isnât bad, i think itâs a good idea to attempt to see the other side. thatâs what iâve been doing while going back and forth with you; examining my own bias and attempting to look past it, and explain why itâs there.so dream kicks george off the throne. and you say that itâs not bad that dream does it, because georgeâs monarchy was already a figurehead. you know, i donât see this as being any better? this means that when dream made george king, he already did it with the fact that george wasnât really in charge in dreamâs mind, meaning that dream was, you know, the ultimate authority. that is a power dynamic. dream has control over who is king of his faction.
when you watch the stream where dream makes george king originally, dream doesnât really let him know that his power isnât real. thatâs the problem with this situation: the presence of a power dynamic alone is not the issue, itâs the fact that dream was misleading about its presence. dream just tells him âyouâre king.â in fact, dream demonstrates more control over eret, by telling them just that they canât be in charge anymore and george is king now. he tells them to take off their crown, to which they protest because itâs a layer on their skin and it would show their eyes, something theyâre uncomfortable with. dream says âi need you to do it. you gotta do it. i mean, iâm not asking you, we have three of us here.â
they physically threaten eret. and by the way, the reason that dream thought eret had âbetrayedâ the greater smp? eret was attempting to help pogtopia and make things right with the people of lâmanburg, something you claim was also dreamâs wish during this time (he had switched over to manburg at this point). dream told eret that the king had a duty to remain neutral.
it is only then, when dream tells eret to remain neutral on things, that dream tells eret that the act of being king means nothing. this is where the âwhat makes you kingâ quote coms from, by the way. dream has the ultimate control over who is king. but whenever he makes someone king, he doesnât tell them that. and when dream leaves, eret fully realizes this and admits that dreamâs right: they donât have any power. so what was the point of betraying lâmanburg?
if there was no power with being king, why did george accept it? why was there even a king in the first place? the only reason eret agreed to betray lâmanburg in the first place was because dream offered them power.
when dream confronts eret about remaining neutral, dream says âmy plan is that thereâs no manburg, thereâs no lâmanburg, thereâs no pogtopia, thereâs just dream smp and thereâs dream smp everywhere. and thatâs been my plan since the very beginning, iâve never wavered on that. thatâs why i had you betray them, and thatâs why i gave you kingship, because i felt like youâd be a good king because youâre neutral.â
ignoring the fact that heâs twisting why he made eret king (they were on the side of lâmanburg and he tempted them away), he also claims that his faction only has been his goal since the beginning. this will be important later.
cc!eret confirmed in a twitter thread on their alt that their character was possibly the longest victim of dreamâs manipulation.
and finally, watching the stream where dream dethrones george, the thing sticking out to me is how dream is phrasing it. he says that george should step down because people are attacking him, and dream isnât always going to be able to protect him. and then he says this.
âand i think youâll just be targeted if youâre the king. and you want to be able to like, get revenge on tommy and stuff, right? so we can work together.â
i kind of wish he didnât bring up tommy. i kind of wish his main goal at this time wasnât just going after tommy because he thought tommy was the root of all the problems. and i think this kind of highlights a little bit that when dream built the walls around lâmanburg again, it wasnât just because he was âdefending georgeâ or anything, because i donât think george really cared that much? dream was using the fact that it was georgeâs house that blew up in order to go after tommy.
after this line, the others all kind of gang up on dream, true. itâs partially for the joke, as evidenced by quackityâs âTHE GIRLS ARE FIGHTING!â, but itâs also kind of them being, you know, legitimately angry at his character. and itâs funny that itâs sapnap who leads it. sapnap brings up what dream said, that he doesnât care about anything except for the disks. dream says that he didnât mean it, and then george says âthen why did you say it?â so dream saying that clearly hurt them, and he canât just push it off by saying he didnât mean it once.
and in the end, george doesnât even agree before dream makes eret king again! george and sapnap are trying to have a conversation with dream about how they feel theyâve been treated, and dream brushes it off with âmaybe this isnât a good time to bring it up,â before ultimately ignoring what theyâre both saying because in his mind he has a good enough reason and it doesnât matter what george thinks.
dream is in the act of passing power over to eret, and george says âiâm still king. iâm literally right here.â dream shushes him. dream also implies that the reason george is getting attacked is because he backs up everything dream says, reducing george down to an extension of his own will or calling him a follower. dream accuses sapnap of trying to divide him and george, and sapnap says this: âiâm not dividing anyone, i stand by george. heâs my king but most importantly heâs my friend.â dream replies that george is his friend but not his king.
i just sort of want to show you the other side here. george and sapnap werenât just running around instigating conflict any more than dream was. and although george didnât do anything as king, it meant something to him, because it was a symbol of the trust he thought dream had for him. dream saying he was taking it away for his own good meant he didnât even trust george to protect himself. he was treating him like a child.
and then when george is silent, listening to everyone debate whether he deserves this or not, dream accuses him of only pretending to be sad. itâs true that he was pretending to cry, but i donât think that warranted dream telling him heâs âacting like a babyâ and that he was a bad king.
sapnap and george had a real point, and dream ignored them. he hadnât addressed the things he had said that hurt them, and so they raised legitimate grievances with him! dream doesnât treat their concerns as important, and talks down to george in particular.
ignoring the fact that sapnap and george were also hurting is kind of hypocritical. youâre right, âabandonment hurts you, no matter if the people have good reasons for it or notâ. dream said the spirit thing before sapnap did any sort of real leaving him. and dreamâs reasons were definitely not good.
i have no idea why you got the idea that george is so awful. he was walking around with his head down. the only one also calling him things like manipulative and a drama queen is, well, dream.

so sapnap, george and quackity felt betrayed there. they left, and went to mexican lâmanburg to try and console george. and then dream shoots quackity and kills him, and tries to attack the others as well. itâs worth noting that quackity also had a reason to be upset at dream: dreamâs treatment of lâmanburg. dream then shows up and calls george a tyrant. dream never listens to what george says during this, he just continues saying what he already said. dream taking the kingship away from george hurt him more than letting him stay would have.
watching this is painful, because itâs making me realize just how much dream doesnât actually care what his friends think! he says he cares, and he might think he cares, but then he calls them babies and liars and tyrants. his argument with george here reads like something awful. heâs using the excuse of âcaring about himâ in order to undermine and insult him, and take the moral high ground. dream essentially tells george that he didnât make george king out of any respect for him, it was just random. he doesnât treat his friends well during this scene. i donât think itâs unreasonable for them to get angry.
when quackity, after sitting in silence for the entire conversation, says he disagrees, dream tells him that heâs just dumb. doesnât wait to hear his reasons, doesnât value his opinion, because dream is so sure that heâs right and he knows whatâs best for the server, and by extension, everyone.
other interesting things: dream brings tommy into it again by saying heâs what causes all the problems on the server. dream tells quackity to think about what tubbo would think about him picking this fight. dream says that george would probably do anything he told him to do. his entire position is âyou guys can think whatever you want, but it wonât change anything.â genuinely, tell me how this is them abandoning him? and when they do drift away later, tell me why they donât have a reason to? dream doesnât respect them! he takes their friendship for granted!
âwould you consider it justified for all of tommyâs friends (even tubbo who heâs been close with for so long) to abandon him just because heâs said basically the same thing about the discs - like three times?â
thank you for bringing up the disk thing. do you really think that tommy and dream acted the same when saying that an item held more worth than their friends?
think about what the disks symbolize. control over tommy. tommy wants them back because they are a sign of dream having power over him! tommy doesnât want his abuser having power over him! and yeah! it was a messed up thing for him to say to tubbo that the disks were worth more than him, but he apologized! he understood that what he said hurt tubbo, and he tried to rebuild the relationship! tommy took responsibility for what he said, and tried to be better. notice how afterwards, he was willing to sacrifice anything for the safety of his friends? notice how in the vault he told dream to take the disks and do whatever he wanted with them, when dream switched from threatening the disks to threatening the life of tubbo?
and what do the disks mean to dream? they mean power over tommy. the disks have no power over dream. they are a tool that he can use to hurt and control tommy. and he never apologized for this, because he wasnât sorry. sapnap told dream that this hurt him, and all dream said was that he didnât mean it. who is he lying to, then? tommy or sapnap? it was so important to dream that he had ultimate control over the life of someone else that he almost drove them to take their own life. iâm sorry, but this comparison sucks.
people gave dream a chance. people gave him a lot of chances. the disregard he showed for others is disgusting, especially towards his friends, and even more so towards those who he didnât like. my problem is that though you repeat that you donât âblameâ others for what they did, you still hold them to more responsibility than youâre willing to hold him to, or at least thatâs what it seems like. iâve been investigating the other side through this whole process. and yeah, there are definitely places where i was wrong. but sometimes i do not understand, and maybe that means i should just give up on trying to understand those places. if other people can see things i canât, maybe we agree to disagree.
i legitimately cannot see dream being the person who was treated the worst here, but let me know if iâm misrepresenting you.
iâm sorry that i sound angry, and iâm not really upset at you, but the comparison of what dream said and what tommy said set me off.
âno one having respect for him as a personâ
people did respect dream, man. he was the leader of his faction. he had a lot of power. his friends trusted him to be a good friend to them. but he didnât feel like he had an obligation to do that, yeah? and you only get respect if you give it, so they stopped respecting them because he hurt them. he didnât learn any hard lessons about violence being the only way because he never stopped to consider another way. when faced with a problem, his options were for the problem to go away or he would make it go away: surrender or die.
during the stream where he sets up the walls with sapnap, his message is the same throughout: wipe them out. no mercy. burn their land to the ground, leave no survivors. thereâs no love in war. children get hurt in war. this is a warning shot, he says, as he fires into their land. as sapnap burns down tubboâs house and chat spams âno mercyâ. they donât show mercy because mercy is weak, and they are powerful.
one day iâm gonna write a thing that talks about the greater smp like how people talk about early lâmanburg because oh boy
iâd like to see evidence of dream learning that violence is the only way, and only being able to protect himself through fighting. i donât remember this happening, i remember him generally choosing violence as the first option.
âdream didnât have an arising god complex.â
a god complex means more than just saying âiâm a god.â there was buildup because thatâs how characters work. tommy was also trapped in the prison, and he didnât suddenly get a god complex at the slightest bit of power, did he? the definition of a god complex is âan unshakable belief characterized by consistently inflated feelings of personal ability, privilege, or infallibility.â dream cannot admit when he is wrong. he feels as if he has a right to the control of the server, and that grows into a state of obsession. and when heâs taking tubbo and tommy down into the vault, he mocks them for thinking he was weak or that he didnât think ahead.
once dream knew he had control over death, the complex reached its peak, and thatâs when he actually admits it. characters that antagonize others already possess traits that contribute to their arc.
and hey, i know that cc!dream says his character is blocked off emotionally. i also know that heâs been given a lot of chances to apologize to people, to be sorry, to admit fault, even in small situations. did dream show remorse during exile? did dream sound like he was being âforcedâ to isolate and control tommy, or did he sound like an abusive parent scolding a kid for something? when dream beat tommy and tubbo and took them down to the vault, did he sound sorry? the thing about subtext is that it has to actually be there, no matter how quiet, at least a little bit. listen to dream arguing with quackity after george was dethroned and tell me he sees himself as anything other than right.
a few one off lines are not enough evidence to wipe out the rest of his characterâs development.
he sounds sorry once he is faced with direct consequences, because that is the only time he is held responsible for his actions.
itâs also a weak argument to say that something is happening when, as you said, we donât see his pov. it is fair to say that i donât know if itâs not happening, and thatâs a good point. cc!dreamâs comments about his character being closed off emotionally can mean a lot of things. for instance, they could mean that his character is willing to do this to himself in order to get control. or it could mean something else entirely, i donât know. basing an entire fact about a character off something we donât see at all doesnât tell us anything useful about the character, and i apologize for doing that.
i guess my reason for saying that was that i donât see evidence of him trying to get better during pogtopia. if we donât see signs of him being sorry or attempting to treat other people better, why should we assume that he was doing those things?

dreamâs friends supported him until he abandoned them and disrespected them. his time in the prison is a consequence of his time out of the prison, albeit an unfair one.
âdream didnât hurt george.â
dreamâs disrespect of george is what hurt him. dream didnât apologize for it, he didnât attempt to understand what george was feeling, and he didnât look for a compromise. and yeah, it was beckerson in the vault. he had a space for mars, he just hadnât collected it yet. so yes, dream did betray sapnap. if you have legitimate evidence of sapnap doing something that made dream actually upset, before the vault, iâd like to see it. (there might be something lol iâm sorry iâm Very Bad on his lore but from what iâve investigated i didnât find anything really important.)
i donât think puffy saying âthis person does bad thingsâ is her dismissing their trauma. and the eggpire and her have both hurt each other. puffy isnât the Trauma Designator of the server. if thereâs an instance of her straight up saying that someone doesnât have trauma then i missed it.

i donât see evidence of this? there was the one stream where the relationship was established, but after that he never tried to seek her out. he doesnât even talk about her. itâs not a failure from her to not reach out to him, if their connection is light at best. i honestly feel like she was more attached to him than he was to her.
âlike sheâs doing something extra by being a decent person.â
sheâs saying he didnât deserve to see her because he did bad things! she still cares about someone who has done bad things, but she recognizes that those things are bad. sheâs saying the punishment for what heâs done should involve not seeing her, personally, and i think she should be able to make that decision? she doesnât endorse the rest of his punishment, because she doesnât know what it entails.
she helped him by thinking he was in the right. she helped him by even trying to understand him, when everyone else could not. she gave him the help that she could by being on his side, by being friendly to him, and after she realized he was wrong she could not do that because he was off preparing the vault! and she had other things to worry about! âcould haveâ is useless because it can mean anything! tommy âcould haveâ not burned georgeâs house down. would it have mattered, when dream already had it out for him? no!
dream took anyone being close to him for granted. he did not give anything back to them once he started going down the path. if he did something bad to them, and they were angry, that was it for him. he did not attempt to fix the bond, like other characters do when they hurt someone they care about.
âi never said anything negative about them other than describing things they did that had a negative effect.â
hereâs my main point: we donât know they had a negative effect.
you criticize the characters for not taking an action that we do not know the implications of. everyone could have been super nice and worried about dream and that could have changed nothing. thatâs why i think the criticism is unwarranted.
their crime is inattention to a situation that some of them did not even know was happening. thatâs like saying that techno is âresponsibleâ for some of the pain of tommyâs exile, because he did nothing to stop it. thatâs like saying that quackity or tommy âshould haveâ removed the tnt from the button room under lâmanburg.
i just donât get the point of the criticism. because it can apply to any character in any situation, you know? we could say that eret taking back the kingship from george enabled dream into taking more control over his friends, and that eret should have stopped him. we could say that skeppy telling dream he was wrong about lâmanburg pushed him further into the role of the bad guy. if you arenât being negative about the characters, then why bring it up in the first place?
âtruly believe they did all those thingsâ they didnât do anything. if youâre talking about the âactual consequences and effect it had on him as a characterâ, you have to look at what affects his character.
we can say âsapnap should not have said this to dreamâ. because that is something sapnap actually did, directly to dreamâs face, and it is something that visibly affected dream. considering the conditions of the prison, it is an inhumane thing to say. thatâs something i would call reasonable to consider when analyzing dreamâs character.
but puffy talking to herself, writing her own thoughts and reactions down? that does not impact dream in any way! and i think puffy thinking internally that dream is a bad person (when she has been given adequate reason to think so) has a lot less impact on Real Plot Events than the stuff that dream actually did.
what is her âfaultâ here? what harm did she do? what am i excusing? what did she do wrong, and how is the effect of her specifically visible in dreamâs actions? he hasnât mentioned her in months, and itâs my perspective that if he cared, we would know.
if a tree falls in the forest when nobody is around, does it make any noise?
(the person i was responding to linked a thread about how the prison isnât helping dream and how puffy and sapnap saying he deserves it is inhumane)
that thread doesnât actually seem to be assigning any fault to puffy, itâs just saying that hearing that kind of thing hurts.
(also, the person who wrote the thread saying âi told you soâ is going to have nobody to tell it to. we all already know dream is going to be violent when he gets out, because he told tommy he would hunt down and take revenge on the things he loves. but heâs not going to be violent because puffy didnât visit him.)
âanother person he cared about who didnât prove to care about him enough to stop him from spiralling or try help at all.â
how did puffy not care about him? what did she do before the vault that showed that? how did she specifically abandon him, by actions of her own will and not of consequences of his? for supposedly caring about her, dream did pretty much nothing to show it.
âif âthey donât owe him anythingâ is your base argument against someone being hurt via being left by people they care about over and over again until theyâre utterly alone with no support system and unhealthy mindsets, we might have to agree to disagreeâ
we would disagree if that was my point, but itâs not. because thatâs not what the characters did. they didnât all abandon him, as iâve said. he says that he cut ties with them, but if you say heâs lying when he says that you can disregard it, i guess. and five to six people are definitely not responsible for him. again, youâre critical of them for an action they didnât take, and in some cases it was impossible for them to take like with tommy, who certainly didnât abandon him, as hard as he tried to.
âhis (dreamâs) manipulation is the clumsiest thing iâve ever seenâ
i mean i donât really find it funny that dream was âbadâ at manipulation. and clearly it was powerful enough to work on multiple people, and if he was that ineffective at it it wouldnât have worked. but i understand what youâre saying, although i disagree with your take on wilbur.
itâs true that wilburâs smart, but this is again saying things about stuff we canât prove. if you look at the context of wilburâs actions next to everyone elseâs, they seem pretty tame. and he can play a morally grey character without the intent being that the character was seriously manipulative all along. although i guess itâs nice to think that youâve solved the code, if âsolving the codeâ means âthe majority of everyone else is wrongâ then you may want to take a step back.
i think the principle of occamâs razor sort of applies here, and especially applies later to the conversion between dream and wilbur. unless there is strong, strong evidence for a theory that sort of goes against stuff, there may be a better explanation. iâve scrapped like fifty theories because of this dude hskhdksjsthe things i said at the start about tommy and wilburâs grabs for power not being serious still do apply, and so does the fact that at the start of the roleplay, the ccâs didnât see their characters as that separate from themselves. i think it would be kind of weird for cc!wilburâs intent to be genuine manipulation of his actual friends all along, especially when he wasnât playing it as a bit.

nope. he didnât tell anyone they âneededâ to to anything. anyone who joined the country joined of their own free will, and nobody joined during the war, just before and after.
wilbur didnât really ârecruitâ tommy so much as they were on a team of causing small arguments. wilbur joined and he and tommy went to go scam people together, while tommy told him about the various other little schemes he had been running. and i donât really think he was intending to do a real takeover, which is why i called it âweakâ. the man told people that potions give you diarrhea. does that sound like the work of a mastermind? no, because itâs the self proclaimed âcrime boyâ. and that âdrug empireâ got shut down pretty quick for something that was supposed to last a long time.

lâmanburg was not the drug empire under a different name. lâmanburg was about separation from the greater smp, admittedly because they felt that being stopped from selling drugs was a bad thing, but then they pretty much completely dropped the drugs and the empire throughout the wall vod.
so when he was recruiting people like fundy, he was doing it with the intent of getting them to make drugs with him. he says nothing about dream when fundy joins his drug empire. and yeah, he lied to him originally, but it didnât work. fundy visited the van and saw through wilbur (and tommy)âs story, and then he decided to join, on his own. because he wanted to make drugs.

there was no targeted hatred towards dream until he approached them. and i would say the most âevidenceâ that wilbur was trying to go after dream in any way is the infamous âwhatâs tyrannical meanâ moment. the thing about that moment is that taking a single moment and using it to define an entire period is unfair. itâs not like thatâs a turning point, and after that they solely go after dream. they donât. i agree that you have to watch the actions of wilbur, and his actions at the time were geared towards becoming independent and progressing the condition of lâmanburg.
wilbur is honest with eret when they join that they are committing crimes. eret joins because âhaha americans badâ. meanwhile, dream is in chat telling eret that there are âthree defectors from the kingdomâ.

if what revivedbur said agreed with canon, people wouldnât be pointing out that it doesnât. watch back the hot dog stream, the wall stream, the first war stream, even the stream after that when niki joins. look at how wilbur speaks, and also look at how he acts. it does not match up with all of what revivedbur says.
early wilbur is naive. he thinks heâs doing the right thing, so he therefore concludes the people against him are wrong. the only fighting back that lâmanburg does before war is declared is killing alyssa (and this was tommyâs idea, wilbur was discouraging killing her), because they thought she set the fire. once she told them she didnât, they gave her back the stuff they thought they had. tubbo still had her pickaxe, but didnât realize. and for this? the people of the greater smp hunted him down, trapped him in a box, and killed him as well as killing tommy, who tried to save tubbo.
wilbur scolded tommy for killing alyssa. wilbur wanted to focus on building the nation, on declaring independence, and actively ignored the other side. he writes the declaration and he believes in everything it stands for! half the things in there are things that the other people of lâmanburg yelled out, that he wrote in as they were being fired on by the greater smp. it comes from all the people.
the declaration of war from the greater smp pretty much says âsometimes you just gotta kill some people, you know?â
i am not disagreeing with you that after the first war, wilbur fell into corruption. itâs implied greatly that this is partially a consequence of the first war, and also partially stems from his fierce protectiveness of lâmanburg.
also, if youâre saying that you have never and will never believe wilbur, i would urge you to re-examine that. itâs hard to avoid bias when you refuse to take most things that someone says as truth. i am also curious how you came to this conclusion as you began to watch the smp (if you never believed him at all) and whoâs perspective you were watching.
âaccording to his actions and all known laws of logicâ according to the streams and vods that very much still exist, and his actions in them, no, he wasnât lying since the beginning. did he tell lies? yes, everyone did. was he being untruthful about his devotion to lâmanburg when he took arrows for it and died for it? no. itâs pretty clear to see when you watch the vod. his actions speak louder than his words.
so no, it doesnât make sense for him to be lying since the beginning. it doesnât make sense that revivedburâs ideals are a switch from how he was even right before he died, so we cannot trust his memory and his morals to remain intact! the man was alone for thirteen years, speaking of torture.

a point- not everything cc!wilbur says about his character is negative.
a lot of his commentary on his character came after his death, so it encompasses his spiral. i will again suggest that you listen to âeightâ by sleeping at last. itâs true he can play a morally complex character, because he does, but he does not play an intentional antagonist the entire time, even in âsecretâ.

how are his later accusations hypocritical? wilbur calls him a tyrant in the moment, yeah. wilbur thinks that he should be able to do whatever he wants, and since itâs the dream smp, he assumes dream is the leader. dream never contradicts this, by the way. wilbur writes in the declaration of independence that âin the course of human events it becomes necessary for one to dissolve the bonds which bind us. disregarding of this truth is nothing short of tyranny.â so thatâs what he considers tyranny. when he got stopped from selling drugs and tommy got arrested, he didnât yell âtyrannyâ.
mistreatment of citizens by authority and denial of independence is tyranny.
dream and the people of the greater smp hurt and attack the people of lâmanburg throughout the wall stream. importantly, since they denied lâmanburg independence, the people they were firing and attacking were their own citizens in their eyes. mistreatment of citizens is cruel. upon hearing that lâmanburg existed, they became even more tyrannical. thus when wilbur writes this in the book, as they are being fired on, he believes this to be true because it is.

wilburâs form of lying and deception for the drug empire was the norm for the server at the time. we donât see him pulling this sort of exaggerated bit once he gets into lâmanburg, because heâs idealistic and he really believes in it. if you watch tommyâs stream where wilbur first proposes the country, he jokingly says the reason heâs making it is because âamericans ruin bitsâ. also during that stream, tommy asks if theyâre making a drug empire, and wilbur says that no, theyâre making a nation where drugs are legal.
âdidnât even do that muchâ hmm. no, iâm pretty sure dream and the people of the greater smp did do the stuff wilbur accused them of. one, he wasnât directly accusing dream, (because. his problem wasnât with dream specifically.) and two, the things he said in the declaration did happen?

tommy was imprisoned for the drugs and for other things he was involved in, and tubbo was trapped and murdered for a thing he didnât even know he had.

they were fired on multiple times when building lâmanburg, they were threatened with consequences for the drug stuff, they told them in pretty clear terms that they were prepared to kill them instead of letting them be independent. the day of the war, dream and sapnap burned down all the trees around lâmanburg and lavacast walls around it, saying it was a âwarningâ.

again, true. tommy and tubbo in particular died a lot during this time.
so since these things really did happen, how is wilbur lying about them?

one, he accused sapnap of being an american, and it was the americans that were going for them. you donât need to protect people that arenât being hurt. most of his reasoning for âno americansâ during this time was that anti-mask protests were happening in america, and he was making fun of them. two, the others imprisoned tommy, which does not count as âself defense in an anarchist societyâ. they accepted tubbo because he was european, and because he was willing to work for the nation like the rest of them. sapnap just wanted a drug dealer.
âdreamâs âno factionsâ thing he had going on also included no government by default, showcased by him having problems with people starting countries.â
if there was no government, why did dream never point this out when wilbur said he was seceding? the server is dreamâs faction! he doesnât want âno factionsâ, he wants only his faction. dream refers to the server multiple times as a nation, and even a kingdom. anarchist societies donât have prisons. the prison and the police is a system. if you have an anarchist society, but two specific people are going around arresting people, them going âoh but thereâs no governmentâ doesnât take away the fact that theyâre creating a hierarchy, using their own power? they also never claimed that there was no government.
everything that dream said later in the conversation with skeppy also lines up with this. ignoring the fact that there was a monarchy established because it âdidnât have any real powerâ is disregarding the fact that one, it was there, and two, that there was someone around with enough power to establish it in the first place. i donât know how to say this any clearer. anarchist places do not have kings.
and anarchy is not the only thing that fits. it wasnât designed to be a geopolitical drama, they just made the mistake of letting wilbur soot onto the server. so they didnât need to have a name for the system, because the system was âdo whatever you wantâ, including establishing authority.
âdream had all the reasons to believe they were aggressive and was fully justified in declaring war.â
dream didnât declare war because alyssa was attacked. he had done stuff to them before that happened, and they got back all of her stuff (again, not by asking and trying to work it out, but by kidnapping someone who genuinely believed they were innocent and killing them as they begged for help.) dream started the official conflict because he declared war. he also started the unofficial conflict. he didnât think they were aggressive, he thought they were weak.

what, because he had any sort of power? he did stop mistreating others. lâmanburg legitimately did nothing to intentionally hurt anyone, and tommy killing alyssa doesnât count because that was his decision and revenge was already paid out for that. so wilbur stopped scamming people, built the walls to contain his country (he said that they needed nothing outside the walls at some point) and then was attacked multiple times. his mistreatment didnât stop.

wilbur didnât destroy it because it was supposed to be his and it got away from him, thatâs why he held the election: to try and restore peace through attempting to rig the election. he destroyed it because âthe thing i built this nation for doesnât exist anymoreâ, meaning the freedom it originally granted to its citizens was gone under schlatt. meaning the policy of no violence and using words was ruined. if the thing he built this nation for was power, this would make no sense. he could have taken power so easily. he passed off the presidency.
âsomething worth having power overâ is something important. it is something that can be good for lots of people, and the power over it is what makes it safe. itâs worth having power over because when others, like schlatt, take that power, it is no longer safe.
violence and tyranny had become so much a part of lâmanburg that wilbur felt the freedom and peace was gone. so when he blows it up, and says âmy lâmanburgâ, he means it can no longer be used for evil. âmy unfinished symphony, forever unfinishedâ. he saves it for himself by destroying it. so yes, he is being selfish, but not to ruin it for other people. he takes it into his own hands to weed out the fighting, and by doing so takes himself with it. his vision was never complete, because the wars had taught him that the only true freedom, the only true victory (âi won.â) for him was in death. (and then that turned out to be wrong.)

this full quote from cc!wilbur about his character (from his hey and stuff podcast) is very interesting. iâll transcribe it here:
âi decided i was going to make a breaking bad style roleplay, where me and tommy would be drug dealers. and uh, one thing lead to another and iâm the president of a nation losing it due to my own insolence and uh, short sighted naivety. basically disregard for my fellow citizens who i claim to love so much. and a, and a dark, twisted understanding of what is possession. and what is, what is my right.â
i like this quote a lot because it highlights the initial traits that caused his spiral. it also places him as kind of similar to dream. the reason he lost the presidency is that he got too cocky. and the reason his spiral was so selfish is that it was all he could seeâ when his earlier vision of freedom was shattered by the first war, he didnât know how to adapt and so became attached to power as it now felt like the only way to keep what mattered to him.
this is emphasized in his conversation with quackity during his second lore stream: that there was a drastic change between the person who made lâmanburg and the person running for president. this quote matches up very well with the election arc. wilburâs motives were different before the election, and they were different after.
once he had the freedom that he wanted, he became scared of losing it and that is what pushed him down. âif i canât have it, no one canâ is on the surface about the power, but the lament for what he once had (freedom in a country without tyranny) is there. thatâs why he became so power-oriented. if he did not have control of lâmanburg, it could be used to go against his original vision and it would be better off gone.
another good piece of information is cc!wilburâs comment on his dnd alignment post, where he says this:
âwilbur is on the border of chaotic and neutral evil. wilbur, in his chaotic sense, is a crazy man who wants to blow up his old nation and kill his friends. but, more realistically, in his neutral sense, wilbur is the archetype of a man who had great power and who lost it all due to his own poor choices and negligence who sees destruction as his ratification.â
note the ârealisticallyâ.
he feels as if he owes it to lâmanburg at the end to blow it up, and he didnât mind taking himself with it as he thought that nobody cared about him anymore and he didnât have any more to give.
(related to this, in the dnd alignment post, cc!wilbur places season 1 dream as chaotic evil and says his only motive is chaos. firstly, this would only apply to season one, and although cc!wilbur was working with cc!dream and everyone else to write the plot here, i wonder why he says this instead of saying anything else about dreamâs motives. this seems to disagree pretty severely with what you think, but it also disagrees with what even i think about dream during this time.)
revivedbur comes back and has plans because he regrets his past. he hates that he gave up that easily. and he could absolutely lie about his past actions! there is no reason to ignore the contents of an entire war because someone who was alone for thirteen years says it!
âshouldnât have itâ doesnât mean he was lying when he said he wanted it. he was just wrong, which he knew when he blew up lâmanburg and thatâs part of why he did it.

they said the words thing a lot of times, and most of the time it was used as a âtommy donât attack that person.â and âfighting with wordsâ is arguing, it is replacing the trauma of real battle with talking it out. lâmanburg did stick very closely to their motto of words over violence. look at the contents of the first war.
and once war was declared, wilbur was enthusiastic for it. sounds suspicious from someone claiming to not want war, right? he said it was a chance for them to prove themselves, to prove they could rule themselves. he also said that if they could defend themselves it would be proof. he never went âtime to attack themâ, and when he said he didnât want a war in the past he meant that he didnât want to start one. his being enthusiastic about the war ties into his naivety about running a country. it was also an acceptance in a way, no? it meant that the greater smp saw them as something worth declaring war on.
and itâs heartbreaking seeing him so excited to prove himself, because we know that the experience of the war is what lead to his spiral and his cynicism as president. we know that a few weeks later, heâs going to be crying into his pillow every night.
for the clip (the âsomething worth having power over and then you get killed by your dadâ clip), i kind of donât know what to say. i donât think this is a clear condemnation of the entirety of lâmanburgâs beginnings, but i do think that i was probably reaching a bit with trying to interpret it. there are definitely a lot of ways to see that, though.
no, he showed it in the first war and he clearly said it. i donât think somebody who wants to mess with dream is going to not even think about him until he shows up, and even after then largely ignore him until he declares war.

question: power over what? power for what purpose? how did he use that power?
if it was only worth having power over, then why did he give it up? why didnât he just kill schlatt in the first place? again i think the reddit post addresses a lot of this. original lâmanburg was worth more to wilbur than power because he was willing to surrender when his life and his friendâs lives were threatened, and he told tommy it was not worth it to enter a duel and sacrifice his own life for it. after the war, he cared about power over it in order to keep peace, and then he realized that his own desire for power caused him to abandon his morals and he attempted to destroy it all.

i just donât think the ideals of the early smp line up with anarchy, and especially not dreamâs actions later. he believes in forced peace, and unity under his terms although that belief is more gradual.

itâs not âfalling for propagandaâ to watch the streams and interpret them. âpropagandaâ is defined as an attempt to spread information, often of a misleading nature. itâs what wilbur used during his presidential campaign, itâs what everyone used during the election. i do not base my opinion of his character off things that have been said about him after the fact. i watched the content when it happened.
so what about the facts that one, he wanted peace at the start, and two, that he cared about protecting his nation and the people he cared about is propaganda? it is information that i believe to be true based on my own analyzing of his actions during that time.
wilbur never says this as an attempt to lie to anyone. he wanted peace if it meant he could have freedom, but he would not attack anyone for freedom, he would defend it once he had established it. he wasnât trying to establish an empire after the drug van stream (he says this in the vod where he discusses his plans for lâmanburg with tommy) and the actions of the greater smp were tyrannical. what happened is that later, after the first war, he lost faith in peace because people continued to attack him!

can you explain the âbenefitâ that division would give him? because like i said, his goal was his own personal freedom. he wasnât attempting to divide people, he was reacting to mistreatment, whether perceived or real. and more often than not, people asked to join him, he didnât try to convince them.

as i was going through the old vods, i did find the origin of that quote (the quote where wilbur says âwe go in with no armor and then stab them in the backâ or something along those lines)! thereâs something funny about it though. notice how he says it and then never does anything about it? and how nobody from lâmanburg acts on it? because you have to look at his actions, something you emphasized that i agree with. they have more weight than his words. he also said âwanna kissâ to dream, so i donât think this really counts as âproofâ of an ulterior motive, because he said a lot of things.

the âpatternâ i see of his reactions to conflict in his nation is that he didnât want to assert control in order to oppress people, he wanted to assert control to keep the peace, by rigging the election so that he had âlegitimateâ authority. was it a hypocritical? yeah! it reminds me of what dream was doing, too: placing his goal of peace over his wish for freedom of everyone.
the difference is that dream didnât have any reserves about âstarting an army and asserting dominance over his own people because they didnât respect his authority and he was irritated by itâ. weird that that can be used to describe dream as well, huh? and before it can be used to describe wilbur?
this is also after the first war, where wilbur learned a very important lesson! and itâs right before he realizes heâd become what he had tried to destroy. the other person who acts like this never realized this, though. itâs because he was never trying to destroy it. just saying.

wilbur did not consider making lâmanburg as a severing of relationships between the two nations. he even expresses neutrality towards some members of the greater smp. wilbur didnât âmake people thinkâ they needed lâmanburg, he saw it as a thing to devote yourself to, an ideology. he did not force others to think this way, although he encouraged it. people ended up sacrificing a lot for that (against their will sometimes), and so they became attached to it.

hmm, no, wilbur did fear for everyoneâs safety. you know, when they were being attacked continuously throughout the war? and when he finally surrendered because they were being threatened and killed?

dream and sapnap need better ways to âkeep the server safeâ than by blowing up people who wanted to go off and do their own thing and posed no threat to the greater server.
i donât know how to provide âevidenceâ that dream and the others attacked lâmanburg? the evidence is the fact that they did. again, wilburâs initial goal was not conflict with the greater smp, it was emancipation. when tubbo was taken hostage and killed, shot at, robbed multiple times of materials it had taken him hours to get, and had his old house burned down simply because he was part of lâmanburg, those were the reasons that tubbo ever fired a shot at them in the first place!
when wilbur lead his people out on the first day of the war, it was to negotiate. they dodged the arrows and went to the embassy, where they were then trapped and driven back into tommyâs house. it was then that they fought back. self defense. i donât know what else to tell you.
âtrying to end the war as soon as he couldâ is kind of misleading, because it implies that dream hated the violence. he just wanted to win as soon as he could. he didnât care what he had to do to win it. no mercy.
the dream smp was not freedom because when you try to leave freedom, it doesnât hunt you down and try to destroy you. anarchy doesnât call you a traitor when you leave. and yeah, dream was real friendly to tommy when he continued the disk war when it first settled. and of course when your friends join a different nation, the most logical course of action is to murder them repeatedly! /s
the definition of anarchy includes personal freedom, the exact thing wilbur wanted. anarchy does not include authority, it is firmly opposed to it. i think i would place the early greater smp as more of a stateless society, if i had to put a name on it (again, i am extremely wary to do that because it wasnât written as anything with a name. this is also a mediocre take that i donât really believe because dream had his own faction.). a stateless society is one of the goals of anarchism, but does not encompass the entire belief.
dreamâs main motivation was that he didnât want anyone being independent. it didnât matter who was leading it.
and iâm sorry, but you canât just take away evidence by saying âhe was lyingâ when there is no proof he is? if you take this conversation at face value it makes more sense! (this is about the conversation between wilbur and dream right before the âindependence or deathâ scene)
âboth sides had their losses and were ready to harm the otherâ what did the greater smp lose. its people? its land? there was other land, and the people could still remain friends. some of them did. dream even says before this that yeah, lâmanburg is losing. and wilbur here is attempting to downplay that loss, claiming theyâre on even ground because thatâs what he wants to happen. he is trying to appear stronger than he really is. heâs bluffing, but it doesnât work.
i donât like saying ânobodyâs the victimâ here when one side was getting absolutely whaled on by the other. wilbur has the ability to be genuine, and he does. if he was trying to âplayâ the victim, he would exaggerate the damage his side had suffered. his words and his actions match up, and this is a pretty different circumstance from him doing a bit. he is a victim. thatâs just straight up true.
iâm not surprised that you think this way, as youâve said you were on dreamâs side since the start, but iâd like to once again ask you to examine where you got these perceptions.
dream offering them âchancesâ was just offering them surrender. thatâs not merciful, and itâs not fair, either. and he may not have wanted to hurt them, but he sure didnât mind doing it. wilbur wasnât sewing some kind of anti-dream propaganda in his nation while the battle was going on, the hatred for dream came from the fact that he was attacking all of them.
âcolonizeâ is a bad word choice for what lâmanburg was. nobody was living on that land before they got there. the land should have belonged to nobody, so why did dream get so mad about âhisâ land being taken? what about that specific area was so important to him, when he did have the ability to visit?
wilbur was pacifist, he was not the instigator, again i have to say i canât offer up proof if youâre convinced that he was lying. when he fought back later it was in self defense. please watch the vods. and recognize that wilburâs actions election era are consequences of his experiences revolution era.
i genuinely donât understand what you mean by comparing this to exile. please rephrase your point. if youâre comparing what dream did to tommy to wilbur trying to stop dream from hurting him and his people more i have to say thatâs a... questionable take. itâs probably a bad idea to make exile comparisons if youâre going to use them to victim-blame, as thatâs very antithetical to exile as a whole and kid of ironic.

dream has a responsibility to not attack kids. dream also has a responsibility to attempt any sort of peaceful negotiation. tubbo was boxed and murdered before war was declared, and tubbo personally had done straight up nothing to the people of the greater smp, and he didnât even know why he died until tommy saw that alyssaâs pickaxe was mixed in with his stuff.
if wilbur claimed to wish to prevent violence, and then he did, or at least attempted to, i donât know why you think itâs untrue. calling someone a rude name is not equal to murder. âverbally violentâ means pretty much nothing and was coming from both sides.
(this next part is about the âlet me be your vassalâ scene in pogtopia)

iâve watched the clip a lot of times and i think that the meaning can be ambiguous. i am using dreamâs other actions during that time to determine how much of an effect i think it had on him. i donât think he got âshut downâ in any sort of meaningful way here.

and i do not know where you got that his fatal flaw was caring too much? he âcaresâ in the way of having control! he doesnât care about the well being of others as long as he thinks heâs right. iâm just saying that he sure could have walked away, because he did just that later when he sided with schlatt. itâs not a speculation about his character when itâs something that he did.
him walking away did not entail complete surrender to wilbur. there were a lot of other things he could have done, but i donât want to get into âcould haveââs as i donât really think thereâs a point. wilbur was attempting to convince him, yeah, but that didnât mean it was true. we know that wilbur was lying about wanting ambition.
also, i donât think dream was allied with pogtopia because he liked them or he was trying to be better or anything. he said in âtyrantâ that itâs because schlatt was worse, and wilbur didnât have any ambition to expand.

slanderous means false and malicious. abusive means offensive and insulting. defamation is things that are not true.
if somebody says, âthis guy punched me.â that would not be vilifying them. it is a true statement with a neutral tone. if they add âhe is a bad personâ, that could possibly be seen as abusive, as it is insulting, but the point of vilifying someone is that you are making them out to be someone theyâre not. it involves the use of lies and continuous exaggerated language. slanderous and abusive. abusive only is not enough to classify something as vilifying.
someone reacting to something dream did by calling him a name is not vilifying him. it is true that he did the thing, and it is also true that the person saying it believes it. it is rare that someone criticizes him without real reason or goes overboard (the person who really does this as far as i can remember is tommy), and when tommy does so it is almost always reciprocated. so we have dream and tommy constantly vilifying each other, and other people saying negative things about dream and sometimes vilifying him, if they lie about it. he sometimes vilifies them.
my point is that vilification is not wilbur telling niki, âdream burnt tubboâs house downâ, despite the fact that he calls dream a bad guy. itâs not slanderous because it is true. dream assisted sapnap with the act. vilification is not tommy explaining to ranboo what was happening during exile, or telling dream that dream makes him worse. âsomeone calling someone out for hurting themâ implies truth, and it doesnât necessarily imply abusive language, but it doesnât matter because itâs true.
maybe we were going off different definitions of vilify. but when weâre accusing characters who are victims of abuse and manipulation, we need to be careful with what we accuse them of.

wilbur saying he wanted to use the tommys of the world was left in the drug van stream. tommy himself was pushing a lot of the âdream badâ stuff because he had more experience with him. when tommy was confused during those two scenes (vassal scene and revivedbur calling dream his hero)it was because he believed that wilbur respected him, and wilbur working with or idolizing someone who had hurt tommy in the past was a contradiction to that belief. wilbur does not question tommyâs anger during the vassal scene because he doesnât care that dream is bad, and when he is revived he either does not believe it or does not want to acknowledge it. revivedbur cares a whole lot more about power for the sake of power than wilbur ever did.
again, tommy isnât stupid. he has his own reasons for not liking dream, and the disconnect comes from a place of trusting wilbur.
by the way, wilbur left the vc before saying that tommy didnât care. he was talking to himself (and chat). and he was more fearful that tommy was leaving than angry. plus, he didnât actually force tommy to give up his house: there was miscommunication between them and the embassy was the power tower in the end. wilbur just wanted confirmation that tommy would spend time in lâmanburg. itâs true that he went about it in a bad way, though.
he didnât push patriotism onto them, they were also excited about the country. there were other scenes beside the tyrant scene, and the amount of times wilbur had to tell tommy to shut up about how great the country is is a lot higher than the one time he had them call dream a tyrant.
true, that scene (scene where wilbur asserts his authority as president) is before pogtopia. itâs also after the war for independence. i am not saying that wilbur should have said any of that stuff. iâm just pointing out that it wasnât always like that.
also i do not really see âyouâre never gonna be presidentâ as a taunt or manipulation or anything. i think wilbur genuinely believed that having tommy in charge of the country would one, get them into more conflicts, and two, mess up tommy mentally. being the president sucked and wilbur knew that. wilbur was not kind to tommy. but a lot of stuff thatâs pointed at as manipulative is pretty clearly wilburâs own paranoia spilling over in a desire to protect tommy, ie saying that tubbo would betray them. wilbur genuinely thought that and he was trying to warn tommy.

tommyâs life has been hard, thatâs true. not disagreeing with you there. but not every adult has been using him the whole time. and if youâre looking for fault, i would personally look at the guy who killed him three times first, just saying. other things had impacts but thereâs a clear scale.

so yeah, initially it was a shallow trade: the disks for the armor. once that conflict was resolved, and tommy apologized, that should have been the end of it, yeah? especially since tommy now had a stronger connection to the disks? that would have been nice.
the problem is that dream took them back for no reason. because he did, he went back and dug up tommyâs whole front yard and spawned months of conflict after. having âleverageâ over someone like that is kinda messed up! itâs not like tommy was going around committing mass murder every tuesday, he got in scraps with other people on the server who also committed petty crimes. so i canât really blame tommy for wanting them back, even though he stole them.
and if dream didnât care about the disks, why did he later use it as âproofâ that tommy caused all the trouble on the server? if they were so worthless to him that he gave them to skeppy, why did it matter that tommy stole them?
i donât know what you mean about this being the only way dream could control people. the amount of genuine fear other characters felt when he logged on was there for a long time. he held a lot of power on the server, and a lot of his control was physical, evidenced by exile in particular but also the wars.
when he did ultimately use connections to control people, that was still a bad thing.

okay, georgeâs house got burned down. do you remember the initial punishment that dream proposed? probation for tommy until he was eighteen. and when dream was arguing with his friends, he pointed out that the only reason lâmanburg was being held hostage for tommyâs crime was that tommy was involved in the government. he said that if tommy hadnât been involved in the government, he probably would have just hunted him down and killed him.
also, someone responding to this pointed out that dream was trying to frame tommy for things at the time. dream was intentionally creating other conflict in order to get to tommy. dream did not care about the house. he burnt down other peopleâs houses.
thatâs not âholding someone accountableâ. thatâs not even close.

the leather from the horse was used to blackmail him after he had already started doing that to people. you know how tommy mimicks him? thatâs what was going on (still bad that he did it but like. come on.) so that may have been the push that caused dream to cut his own connections (so that nobody could ever do that to him again, and he would have no chance of failure), but it didnât just happen to him for no reason: it was a behavior he taught someone else.

tommy called dream a lot of stuff before the war, and most of it was unprompted by wilbur. a lot of it was also, like you said, two friends joking around. just because wilbur taught him a new word (he didnât really tell him what it meant though) doesnât mean he was manipulated into using it all the time or something. and iâm pretty sure tommy got a decent definition of tyranny later, when the greater smp decided to attack lâmanburg before anything went down.

what iâm saying is that narratively, wilbur has an extremely good reason to be biased right now. taking anything he says as truth doesnât solidify an interpretation as truth. there has to be enough evidence to actually back the entire thing up in the first place, and iâm just not seeing âwilbur was always going for power and divisionâ as solidified by his actions during the first war.
and again, tommyâs not stupid, and the entire time tommy is yelling at him! tommy knows something is off! if people also in the story are saying âthis isnât rightâ, i feel like theyâd know? tommy was also part of lâmanburg, he has an opinion too. so when he says âwe founded lâmanburg because we knew dream was the bad guyâ, heâs talking about why he did it. and he brings up a good point: âyou say you did it to stick it to the man, but youâre idolizing dream, who is the manâ. (paraphrased i donât know his exact words but this was his point) this shows that wilburâs motives have changed, even from what revivedbur will say.

-wilbur did not legitimately think dream a tyrant when he told tommy and tubbo to call him that. neither, really, did tommy and tubbo. it was a joke. like infinite women. like dream saying âiâm evilâ when he was blowing up creepers on their land before the battle. like dream and sapnap being all âdown with the britishâ.
-their attitude on that changed when the greater smp begin exhibiting tyrannical behavior (before war was declared!).

-the lâmanburg anthem was, one, not written by wilbur (he commissioned someone to do it on fiver), and two, was written after the first war. they sing it in the stream where niki joins. so yeah, at that point, they did emancipate from the brutality and tyranny of their rulers! it doesnât say who the rulers are (therefore itâs. not blaming solely dream.) but pretty much all of them were brutal!

-âwould rather die than submit to your tyrannical ruleâ is a quote from the speech wilbur gives before dream lights the tnt. dream had done stuff to them at that point. this is out of context.

-the main argument, that dream did nothing before being irreversibly forced into the role of the villain does not really match up with what happened.

-and also, dream was lying about wanting lâmanburg to be something. he says to eret a few days later the quote that i included a while back, that his goal has always been for there to be one faction: the dream smp. note that at this point heâs officially on manburgâs âsideâ now. he also says he has never wavered on this from the beginning. so heâs either continuing his manipulation of eret and lying to them, or heâs just saying that he wants lâmanburg to be something to wilbur and tommy to try to get them to trust him. and hearing him yell âYES!â after the explosion? iâm inclined to think itâs the latter.
okay, so then looking at the second analysis:
-once again, calling wilbur a colonizer? there is a definition of that word that matches up with his actions, but that definition is something establishing itself in a place. by that definition, everyone on the server is a colonizer. so calling just wilbur that seems... a bit weird, considering that the common definition does not match up with what he did.

-dream had no idea what kind of government they were setting up there. he didnât ask, so he wouldnât know if it was a dictatorship. and again he was allowed on the land, he just never built the embassy. the âno americansâ rule was weakly enforced during the first war, and the reason wilbur got so serious about it later is that the americans were the ones who went after him and killed everyone during the war! so he had a reason to want them off. objectively a bad reason? maybe
-it would be cool if dream said âhey donât do this hereâs whyâ instead of stomping off during negotiations and then coming back to beat them up and declare war. he didnât though
-the problem people have with greater smp vs. lâmanburg is scale. the greater smp was quite literally infinite, and lâmanburg was a small space. there wasnât anything important in lâmanburg that other server members needed to get to. people could still leave to visit their friends. they didnât legitimately hate americans. but nooo, you canât have the table because itâs my table. what if you do something bad with the table? remember when you tried to sell people âbetter airâ for three dollars and then took someoneâs air conditioning? you just want power! iâm going to go bring back rubber bands to pelt you with.

no, i do agree with you on the sam stuff. for some reason i was under the impression that cc!sam was uncomfortable with being depicted as torturing dream a while back, but with the stuff happening with quackity now, iâm reasonably sure that doesnât apply. they donât retcon stuff that was intentional but there may have been something taken back a few months ago before they planned this.
but yeah, clearly the prison stuff is awful and messed up. thatâs why i noted the thing at the start of the reply: i am in no way saying that anything sam or quackity have done to dream since prison hasnât affected him. these are things that i see as having visible impacts on the character.

i understand that itâs frustrating to hear that used as an excuse, but i wasnât using it that way. i was pointing out that neither of them deserve it. during the vault stream, dream tells tommy that his plan is to put him in the prison. he says that exile was âperfectâ, and the only issue was that tommy could get away. putting him in the prison fixes that.
so yeah, what dream was planning to do to tommy is different than whatâs happening to him. but the reasons that other people wanted dream in the prison match why he wanted tommy in there: like you said, itâs a vault. itâs so he can store him and use him later, to give attachments and thus power and control over others.
tommyâs original plan was to kill dream. ultimately, he didnât want him to suffer more, he wanted him gone. nobody on the server knew yet that death was limbo, and tommy probably thought it was mercy for someone like dream. dream was the one who brought up the book, as an attempt to save himself. he will say whatever he needs to say to avoid death, because anyone would (except someone like wilbur whoâs. accepted his role. you know?) so heâs the one who reduced himself down the the book, saying if he goes, so does it. thatâs when sam suggests the prison.
true, the arc is dark. this is where samâs actions become corrupted and he loses sight of some of the responsibility he claims to have. itâs also the arc where dream lied to tommy that he had changed, and pressured him into staying by saying he was his friend. itâs the arc where dream kills tommy, and doesnât allow sam to come get his body for days. itâs the arc where dream gets even worse, whether because of his time in the prison or because of his peaked god complex, probably both.
and again, my problem is that criticizing characters for actions they didnât take is pointless. it tells you not much about the character, and considering the circumstances of what dream had done it does make sense for none of them to step in! they are looking at the fact that dream had an entire vault dedicated to controlling them. they are seeing that dream was fully prepared to murder tubbo and lock tommy away forever to be used. they are witnessing tommy giving dream exactly what he got.
so âacknowledgingâ this does nothing useful! we do not see these actions (or lack of) specifically affecting dream. i can tell you what dream told people he was doing, and it matches up with things he had done in the past, and there are moments he denies the narrative that you say drove him to do this. but i canât really prove anything when you say heâs lying here because it fits how you interpret the story.
itâs what youâre saying people are doing to revivedbur: saying heâs lying without any proof, when with him there is evidence and he has the motive to lie. when revivedbur lies, tommy calls him on it. tommy doesnât call dream on it. iâve laid out why i think itâs not true, and iâve seen stuff in early canon that directly contradicts what revivedbur says. occamâs razor! many pieces of evidence versus a few statements from someone who at that point commonly lied about things like that.
dream standing by while tommy and the other citizens get killed in lâmanburg by his own orders isnât very peaceful or non-tyrannical of him. tommy was enforcing an eye for an eye, and to be honest? i donât think âkill your abuserâ is such a terrible message to send, despite the fact that we know that tommyâs coping mechanisms come from a bad source. and tommy was far from free of what dream did to him, as evidenced by later when he again attempts to mirror what dream had done to him in the past.
yeah, i read your analysis of the interaction (skeppy and dream arguing over lâmanburg). thatâs not the only interpretation. skeppy doesnât call him the villain. he is repeating back to dream the actions that dream took, and dream tells him heâs making him sound bad. skeppy wasnât influenced by any âpropagandaâ you think lâmanburg was putting out while they were getting murdered. skeppy was an outsider who was calling it as he saw it.
and if other people saw what dream was doing as bad, maybe he was... doing bad things? for bad reasons? skeppy was critical of dream for his actions. talking over somebody does not certify it as âtwisting wordsâ. skeppy was accusing him of doing the actions, like âso you did this? you started the war?â. dream was defending the logic behind his actions, like âwell i did it because.â

okay, name one? puffy. sam. punz? he did cut them off, he straight up told tommy he did it, and making a place in the vault for fran when sam had done nothing but work with him? and they didnât âshow up ready to kill himâ, they showed up to see what he was doing. so he tells tommy he abandoned them, and indirectly tells them with the spirit scene. sapnap and george noticed this, and called him on it, but he just said he didnât mean it?
if dream âwasnât as closeâ with sam/puffy/punz, why are we putting responsibility on them for his actions.
so sapnap and george walked away from him, but because he did something to them. and puffy didnât abandon him. punz didnât abandon him, punz got paid off because thatâs what punz cares about: money. heâs a mercenary.
using âthey left him firstâ for sapnap and george doesnât allow for why they left him: because he wasnât treating them fairly. he isnât their parent, heâs their friend, and he wasnât acting like it.
âhe was hurt and abandoned to the pointâ âhe ended up hurting people doesnât negate the fact he was hurt himself firstâ âthe environment they all were a part of pushed him this far, and thatâs just what happenedâ
so youâre saying itâs right that the reason dream did bad things to people is because bad things were done to him first? because dream was definitely the one who got attacked first during lâmanburg. because he just cared so much about george that he kicked someone out of society just to defend his honor. /s and then, because his real purpose was protecting george, he went back and tried to make things right with george because it wasnât about tommy? oh wait, he didnât. he focused on only tommy. because georgeâs house was an excuse.
âthatâs just what happenedâ is a bad take on âpeople got abusedâ. the fact is that dream started a lot of the conflict. looking at the retaliation and self-defense that people did towards him and saying âhe got hurt a bunch thatâs why he did the later bad stuffâ completely negates that he started it? and his âretributionâ was always exponentially worse than the actual crime committed?
dude, iâm just trying to point out that the story says he cut people off. yeah, he was hurt at times, but that is not an explanation for what he did. itâs not even a logical cause, because we do not see it affect his character. the subtext has gotta be there. the fact that he was hurt does not make him any more justified.
âcircle of violenceâ does apply (not all of them, though). but in this situation, itâs a kid stealing someoneâs lunch money, and then the other kid breaks their nose. the first kid punches the kid, the second kid puts them in the hospital. when the retribution dream gave was always worse than whatever happened to him, the issue is not âlook at the people hurting himâ, itâs âstop him from hurting peopleâ!
so clearly dream needs some kind of therapy (not from puffy though iâm not letting him near her /hj), because just killing him would be a permanent solution but it would upset people who like his character. the prison is awful and not going to work. my personal solution for him is to send him out somewhere a long way away, so that nobody heâs hurt has to see him again. maybe people that wanted to go with him could, and it would be like a new smp. but when that idea was proposed, tommy said darkly that he was always going to come back. maybe itâll be the solution in the future. who knows.
if the mistakes were unintentional, why criticize the characters for them? and what about âthe environmentâ besides the other people changed how dream thought? a lot of it was internal.
we have him exiling tommy as a weird, desperate plea for friends (not really) when he very much could have gone back and spoken to the people who were his friends. we have him continuously saying that tommy causes all the problems, and he needs to be ârestrainedâ or âcontrolledâ or whatever other excuse he came up with for taking away a personâs free will.
we have him obsessing over the disks, and we know itâs not about the disks, itâs about power over tommy and power in general. he says this in the vault. he says this at the community house scene. his progression is towards a twisted sense of possession, same as wilbur, oddly enough. but they are different in that wilbur is possessive over the idea of freedom that he created with lâmanburg (and having power over that) and dream is possessive over control over all.
wilburâs idea is ruined. he tied his sense of self to the nation and when it was used for corruption (kind of by him and mostly by others) he saw himself as corrupted and decided to take them both out so that they couldnât hurt anyone. he admits his own fault to the point of self destruction.
dreamâs idea is threatened. other people live there, other people want to do things, and so he becomes so attached to the idea that itâs his server and he will do anything to control opposition. he cannot admit his fault unless forced to.
wilbur would do anything to control a tool of power, because he wanted to not use it as that tool. wilbur wanted anarchy at the end. he says so in his last presidential speech. his naive views about freedom from the start of the server had worn off, as he saw people use power as a tool in a way that he had never intended or meant to use it.
wilbur created the election so that he would have an actual authority over the land, and he could stop the fighting of its citizens. he thought he knew better, kind of like dream did. this is when his motives get the most twisted and selfish, he wanted peace so bad that he would take away freedom for it (like dream). but when he lost, he accepted it, and thatâs the difference. he saw the desire for control in his own actions, and hated himself for it. thatâs why he wanted to blow up lâmanburg, to take away the tool for power and the person who had been tempted to use it.
wilbur was a good leader in the political sense (dream admits this in âtyrantâ) but when he stands before the rubble of lâmanburg and calls it his, heâs saying that his rule would only lead to destruction. anyoneâs rule would. power corrupts. lâmanburg ruined is his lâmanburg, itâs his original vision of complete freedom laid out before him, and tracked to its inevitable end.
so then, you would say, dream was right, yeah? he didnât want lâmanburg. but wilbur before he explodes lâmanburg doesnât like dream. he thinks dreamâs right in that factions lead to oppression, no matter how good the intentions, but he also knows that dream was a little too willing to hurt them and that dream doesnât believe this. dream does not want anarchy, he wants chaos but only if it gives him control. he treats the smp like his country, and once again, power corrupts.
went off there, sorry. dream and wilbur are similar but different in some very important ways.
sapnap had been hurt by dream before the vault, and as dream didnât see himself as in the wrong, he didnât reach out. sapnap was with pogtopia (wait this might be wrong i do not remember but he was definitely on lâmanburgâs side during doomsday) because tommy had shown him more kindness than dream, and that was originally dreamâs side. dream just turned on them for the book.
and sapnap also witnessed dream mocking tubbo, making fun of tommy, exposing ranboo. he heard dream going off about how tubbo was so stupid for thinking dream was his friend, for thinking dream cared about him. why would sapnap side with dream if dream was showing no signs of even wanting him?
sapnap accused dream of that, and dream did not listen to him. he could not see the other side: he was so convinced that he was right. we do not know if sapnap went into the vault with the intent of killing dream. iâm pretty sure most of them were there to see if what tommy had said was true. and then, sapnap saw that it was.
nobody abandoned him because of the vault because he had already abandoned them. they just made it mutual. it being a âconsequenceâ of stuff doesnât make it any less of a messed up, power hungry thing to do, and some of them had done nothing to him before he decided he needed to control them. he was planning to use friend to control ghostbur, who he had already taken advantage of and tried to kill once.
âpeople do not decide to isolate themselves for no reason.â
true, people donât cut themselves off for no reason. the reason was power and control. i once again have to emphasize that nobody forced him into this: it was a spiral. other people didnât do everything âfirstâ. the small taste he got of his own medicine was a poor mimic thrown at him by someone he had done terrible things to. he started spiraling before the spirit scene happened. and if people are telling him he canât achieve peace, maybe theyâre just... right? did he go up to someone and go âi donât know how to make this server peaceful :(â? because if he did, and if they then pointed at his long list of war crimes and told him not like this, i donât really see that as anything more than a consequence for things he had already done.
someone can lie about what they want. maybe he did originally want peace, or maybe he was lying to himself that he did. lâmanburg did not invite war. he wanted unity above peace, and that âunityâ dissolved into âcontrolâ.
it was a defense so that nobody could control him the way he was going to control them. cutting himself off was out of fear, yeah. collecting everyone elseâs items? power and control. he says this a ton of times, sometimes not even out loud.
i did rewatch the vault vod. thatâs how i got all the quotes of him stating his motives. iâm not saying it was a healthy thing to do at all. i never said dream was mentally healthy, i said he had a god complex and he was obsessed with control. someoneâs bad mental state can hurt others as well as themself, and theyâre still responsible for the others and for trying to be a better and more respectful person. thatâs why revivedburâs âapologiesâ mean nothing right now.
âhe lists his reason for starting the war as them declaring independence, so i donât think it really matters when the official document was sent.â
it does matter a little bit, actually. they were already attacking lâmanburg before official war was declared. they also attacked them during the peace period. wilbur wrote the declaration as he was standing on the roof of the caravan, being shot at by the greater smp.
a country becomes independent when it officially declares itself to be independent. they were still united; it was tyranny.
when dream saw that lâmanburg was writing the declaration, he scrambled to declare war. he had reopened and started other conflicts in the past, and involved himself in places he did not need to be. itâs true that a response is a response, but you cannot treat all responses the same way. quackityâs âresponseâ to the things dream had done (killing tommy among those) was to torture him. we do not consider that good, or fair, or âjust a responseâ, we consider it cruel and unusual punishment.
the greater smp fulfilled the words that wilbur had not yet written in the document, and thatâs because they werenât a prophesy, they were a history.
â...would be completely honest about (dreamâs motivations in the vault) in front of his biggest enemy. /sâ
i donât see evidence that dream wasnât being honest. what did he have to lose by it? tommy could do nothing to hurt him. so yep, he would be honest about it. and heâs listed his reasons as power before. he also has the ability to tell the truth about his motives.
dream does not see tommy that way. he sees him as someone whose only positive contribution to the server is attachment. he tells tommy that evil is relative, and to dream, tommy is the evil one. in fact, he says that tommy is evil lots of times. he only says that tommy sees himself as a hero when heâs trying to convince him to let him kill his friend. dream is using tommyâs black and white perception to get him to do what dream wants. he only says tommy sees himself as the hero, not that dream sees him that way. dream does not care about whoâs the good guy and whoâs the bad guy, because heâs not idealistic like wilbur and heâs not a kid like tommy.
him making a joke about building the prison with a âlittle bit of evilâ doesnât matter because next line he says that tommyâs evil to him. dream isnât playing the villain, cc!dream is. cc!dream is playing a character that is antagonistic towards others, and he plays into it and jokes around with it, as other people playing antagonistic roles have in the past. cc!wilbur does this a lot during the election and pogtopia. cc!techno hints at it with his âah yes, blowing up a country, we must be the good guysâ.
it may sound like a character because someoneâs playing it, but itâs not dream.
this video matches up with some of my points here, but itâs also framed like an english class. it is an interesting meta argument, and one that i would say i partially agree with, but as weâre not really arguing on terms of meta it does not act as a general opposition to your argument. the intent of the authors does not dictate how you see the story, but it can help with interpretation of it.
dreamâs words during the vault scene sure do line up with his actions for the months before that. so yeah, no discredit to cc!dream. heâs playing his character. and itâs not like heâs unwilling to make him sympathetic. heâs done so in the past (and is doing so now) and the fact that he does not do it during the vault, and downplays the tragic part of it (him losing his friends) sure makes it seem like the main point here isnât âpoor dreamâ, itâs âpoor tommyâ. theyâre telling a story. it has a moral.
dream being reserved about his plans may be shown in the fact that nobody knew about the vault (except punz i think?) until dream was ready to put it into play. he generally is quiet about what he wants, he just cares a lot about it and will do a lot to get it. heâs not one for speeches unless heâs trying to make a point. the point here being that tommy is trapped. dreamâs capable of explaining his thoughts. tommy asks him why and invites him to share, so he does.
this isnât really a ânobody can interpret it like thisâ, itâs just pointing out that the events of canon are there and should be fully considered. character dreamâs perspective of the story is biased, so people can look at it and be correct in how dream sees the situation, but âhow dream sees itâ and âhow the story goesâ do not necessarily line up.

-burning down other buildings in order to frame tommy
-blowing up the community house (or having it done for him)

-demanded tommy be punished
-took personal responsibility for exile and used it as a way to isolate tommy
thereâs also this post that describes things dream has done in general. the tone of the post is biased, but the actions were canon. some of these may be âretributionâ but they sure were uncalled for.
so when he exiled tommy, that was about âunityâ? big happy family except for one guy because âhe causes all the problemsâ? it doesnât matter whether he believed he was in the right for his motives. the vault does not make sense for peace or unity. it is a twisted, controlled unity. what iâm saying is that he uses peace as an excuse for his actions. he had to exile tommy, tommy would have just gotten worse. he had to declare war on lâmanburg, it was a necessary evil. because nothing screams âpeaceâ like declaring war and killing the other side, right?
those may be his actual motives in the early scenes, and he thinks heâs doing the right thing. this changes with the vault. he no longer uses this as an excuse, his âexcuseâ is that he has a right to it. his self proclaimed motive is power and control, and unity through that. so why not accept that as his motive when he says it there?
âbecoming a control freak as a result of feeling the loss of control over your own circumstances isnât equal to dehumanizing the people youâre trying to control.â
nah dude he absolutely dehumanized them and took away their agency? he describes tommy as a pet and a tool, minutes before he switches and describes himself as the book. this could also be used to make an interesting point on how he sees people as their values, in item form. so heâs using one item to control another. tubboâs a pawn, tommyâs a tool, technoâs a weapon, heâs the book.
he calls george a baby, and makes decisions for him. by planning to using the items to control the people, he was prepared to take away their freedom and agency by emotionally manipulating them. he did this to tommy. agency is the capacity of someone to act. he takes away that ability in order to have control.
heâs not just a control freak over his own life, the problem is that he does it to others. again, weâre talking true freedom here: the ability to do anything, even things that we would consider morally wrong. he takes away georgeâs power, which is revealed to be nothing. he then swiftly turns and tells him that if he tries to overthrow eret, he would be a tyrant. not acknowledging that dream just overthrew a king and stated in a new one, he hypocritically calls george the tyrant for planning to do that.
(i didnât even notice this until now, but itâs actually interesting: dream is extremely hypocritical here, unless, of course, he sees himself as having more claim to who is king. now why would he think that? a hierarchy, perhaps?)
âwhich is understandable seeing as youâve said already you never tried to look deeper into him, but itâs incorrect nonetheless.â
i said that before this i had not attempted to examine his character in a sympathetic light. thatâs what iâve been doing. his wish to âfixâ his home is really just a wish to control his home, which is pretty evident when you look at right before exile. the smp was peaceful then. tommy had committed petty crimes before, and george didnât even really care about the house. it was minimal damage. dream jumped at the opportunity to convince everyone else that tommy was the real problem (speaking of propaganda and vilifying).
and âhe was getting better until the sixteenthâ disregards that he threatened eret, enabled wilbur (however you interpret that, he still enabled him), and sided with schlatt for power reasons even though he said he would help pogtopia. giving pogtopia some stuff doesnât make him the âgood guyâ because pogtopia were not the good guys! thatâs the point! he sided with them because wilbur had less ambition than schlatt, and therefore posed less of a threat to the greater smp! he wasnât helping them just purely out of the goodness of his heart. he didnât think schlatt was right, he abandoned him very quickly, but he could have just taken the book and dipped. he fought in the war. he took the book for personal gain and he placed that above the trust of pogtopia.
âhe wasnât on a power trip at all, he didnât have a god complex up until the prison stripped him of all his dignity and then threw an opportunity at him, and he wasnât trying to prove anything to anyone.â
power trip: an activity or way of behaving that makes a person feel powerful
exile and the vault, arguably before that a few times as well. there are a few quotes that emphasize this.
dreamâs god complex was already there in the vault. thatâs why he was scared enough of being controlled that he shut everyone else away: he wanted to secure himself even more as the sole power.
and exactly. he wasnât proving anything to anyone else, he was proving it to himself. therefore he also wasnât trying to âproveâ he was big and bad and evil and irredeemable, he was trying to feel confident about his own power!
if he doesnât care if heâs thought as of evil, why did it supposedly drive him into the spiral? if he stopped caring about it, that would also explain why he was indifferent towards it (because he was indifferent towards it, every time someone called him that, indifferent or angry). he didnât think he was evil because he thought he had a right to what he was doing. so he pushed himself into wanting more control, after seeing something he identified as a problem: tommy. youâre right that thatâs part of what makes him tragic: that he stopped caring about what he owed to anyone else. thatâs why he hurt them.
âitâs likely and fits perfectly into his character arc in canon.â
people who are emotionally repressed still show emotions, they just donât show them as often. dream shows emotions but he does not show the specific emotion that would give evidence to this theory. iâm saying that claiming something is deeply rooted in his character (not the emotional repression, thatâs confirmed) when he shows no sign of it doesnât line up with canon. itâs more of a theory than an analysis.
âit is good storytelling because cc!wilbur pulls it off brilliantly.â
cc!wilbur still played a complex character! his behavior changed significantly after the war, but there is evidence that he was a certain way during the war. his character grew from that point but my argument is that he was not always a liar about important things and that he genuinely believed in the values he formed lâmanburg for. if you want to watch wilbur being power hungry and hypocritical, rewatch the election arc.
actions, not words. cc!wilbur pointed out hypocritical things his character said, but that just shows he was playing a flawed character. people using the wall thing as some kind of proof that he was evil is stupid because part of the idea behind the wall was poking fun at america. it was âlook, this is what you guys doâ.
his early character was passionate and naive. cc!wilbur was aware of this. he was still a chaotic crimeboy, the nation was founded on drugs. but not everything he did was âfor chaosâ because again, he played a multi-dimensional character. he can make jokes about politics.
âhis main support system left by themselves.â
iâve already explained why i think dream broke most of his own bonds. again, thereâs textual evidence to support this and actions as well that line up with it. and lots of people were willing to help dream. he didnât murder all those people by himself.
âit also seems youâre strongly biased against c!dream, which, to be fair, the majority of the fandom is.â
itâs true my bias is against dream. itâs also true that my reasons for that bias are backed up by moments in the story where he clearly states his intentions, and a lot of the evidence to the contrary is, to me, one-off moments that can be interpreted in many ways. a lot of the bias also comes from the fact that he did pretty bad things and iâve been watching this for a long time.
this post is pretty much what iâm saying, i guess.

Hi, everyone.
I have something extremely important to talk about that is NOT fandom related. I really do hope this can reach everyone on here, especially since it's still Autism Acceptance Month.
A few quick questions for anyone who happens to see this before I dive right into this: Have you ever heard of Dhar Mann? If so, have you ever seen his videos? What do you think about them?
If you don't know who Dhar Mann is, he's a content creator whose main platforms are Instagram and YouTube. He makes these videos about various scenarios from a couple on the brink of divorce, to kids bullying one of their peers, even about Autism Spectrum Disorder. All of his videos have some kind of message at the end that really drives the point home. One of his most recent videos is about ASD, which is what I'm going to discuss today.
Personally, I think some of his videos are interesting, despite the concepts being reused and recycled over and over; however, how I feel about the video he made about ASD is the complete opposite. I'll summarize the video he made so you don't have to watch it. (If you really want to watch it to see exactly what I'm talking about, I'm not gonna stop you. Do what you need to do in order to form your own opinion.)
The video Dhar Mann made about ASD is about this boy who excludes his autistic brother from participating in activities with his friends at school. The boy bullies his autistic brother and does pretty much everything to make his brother's life Hell, even going as far as to pretend that he doesn't know his own brother. The boy "instantly regrets his decision" when their mom is called into the school to discipline her son for bullying his autistic brother. What his mother says is what REALLY upsets me. The message of this video in particular is this, WORD FOR FUCKING WORD. I wish I was kidding. But here's the message below:

How the video concludes is the boy reluctantly includes his autistic brother in every single activity, the boy sees his brother's potential, and they live happily ever after. Whoop-dee-fucking-doo.
As an autistic woman who works with disabled people for a living, that message Dhar Mann put in this video specifically is not only extremely ableist, but is also spreading misinformation about ASD.
News flash to all the people who still spread misinformation about ASD: Not every single autistic person is a little white boy in elementary school, nor is every single autistic person a young white man who's a Super Geniusâ˘ď¸. (I could go on all day long about how the media stereotypes autistic characters and autistic people in general, but that's a whole other topic.) No autistic person is the same, meaning we all fall on the spectrum in different places and all that jazz. There's no "look" to autistic people either because no autistic person looks the same.
Autistic women exist.
Autistic girls exist.
Autistic nonbinary people exist.
Autistic BIPOC and AAPI exist.
Autistic people who are completely nonverbal exist.
Autistic people who are completely verbal exist.
Autistic people who are in the middle of being nonverbal and verbal exist.
Autistic people who require minimal to no support exist.
Autistic people who require moderate support exist.
Autistic people who require full support exist.
Autistic LGBT people exist. (Reason why I bring this one up is because the media almost always shows cishet autistic men and I don't see autistic LGBT representation very often, if ever.)
Autism isn't something you can "catch". People have this same mentality about ADHD and Tourette's Syndrome too, which, by the way, you can't "catch" either.
Autism doesn't "go away" when you reach adolescence or adulthood. Why? BECAUSE AUTISTIC TEENAGERS AND AUTISTIC ADULTS EXIST. Autistic kids grow into autistic teenagers, then into autistic adults.
You can't "cure" it either. Unless you can build a time machine and a device to go back in time to change how a person's brain develops, there is no cure. ABA therapy is a fucking shit show in itself that does more harm than good.
The title of the video is a real squick for me too. It's mostly because I don't particularly enjoy people using person first language (the "boy with autism" part). I've seen many other autistic people on multiple other platforms sharing that same sentiment and preferring identity first language (autistic person). There are also others who prefer using person first language and those who don't have a preference. That's all perfectly valid. Whatever you prefer people using when referring to you, or whatever you refer to yourself as, in this case, is totally valid and I love you. This goes for disabilities in general, not just Autism Spectrum Disorder.
Regarding the message in this video, here's my response to it! A quick heads-up, my response is VERY long and VERY passionate. I was VERY close to making a response video where I tear that video apart AND tear Dhar Mann a new asshole. Unfortunately, it worked me up so much that I was really struggling with what I wanted to say and I had to stop multiple times because I kept stumbling on my words. That's how angry this message made me. I'll try my best to explain whatever parts you have questions about. I put my response in the nicest way I possibly could, despite me seething with rage, wanting to go OFF on him.
(The first part of my response are the first three screenshots, and the second part are the last three screenshots.)






The first part of my response, I did forget to add that the message is offensive and disrespectful to autistic people as a whole. I apologize. My initial comment got way too long. I pretty much covered that when I told him the message is ableist. I wanted to clear that up before anyone asks about it.
The second part of my response is me opening up about my experience with being diagnosed with ASD, formerly known as As//per//ger's Syn//dro//me, at sixteen years old. I also went into how not calling ASD what it truly is (which is a disability) and calling it a "different ability" instead is extremely harmful and is treating being disabled like it's a bad thing.
By the way, saying that a disabled person is disabled isn't a bad thing. I'm disabled. It is what it is. Does it have its challenges? You bet. Does it help me with certain things? Hell yeah. I can really absorb information about my favorite bands, characters, shows, books, etc., and tell you a lot about those things. For example, I can tell you that Su can't ride a bike or read manga and she's okay with that. I can also tell you she can't tie her shoes very well, which is why her boots don't have laces and are slip-on and/or zip-up. But that doesn't mean my struggles are nonexistent or that I never struggle. I do, and it makes my life Hell at times.
The narrative that autism is a bad thing to have, every autistic person is somehow broken and they all need to be "fixed" is also super fucked up and not true. That's the narrative that I received when I was diagnosed by a therapist I had. I'm gonna be real here, I cried when I was first told that I was diagnosed with ASD. I felt like I was broken. I already felt like a total outcast. Being told about my diagnosis made me feel even more broken than I already felt. I was so ashamed of myself, despite me not doing anything wrong whatsoever, that I masked for SEVEN YEARS of my life. I masked for so long that I forgot I was even diagnosed with ASD in the first place. I wasn't taught how to really put my special interests into good use. I kinda had to figure that out on my own. I was pretty much under the assumption that me being interested in anime, cartoons, music, comics, theatre, writing, etc., to the point of obsession, was somehow weird and hurting people around me. You know, despite those things being harmless. Despite me being able to separate those things from other things that are important (like work, for example). Despite my only surviving parent, other family members, and the woman he was dating at the time completely overreacting and not bothering to see exactly what makes these things so special to me.
(By the way, having a disability does not completely make who a person is. There are a lot more things that make who a person is than that.)
It's kinda shocking that I wasn't able to come to terms with my diagnosis until this year. Considering that I masked for so long due to being ashamed of myself, plus being treated like a burden for being disabled, it's probably not very surprising. I initially thought at the time that it was the worst thing to have, as I was already struggling with enough shit back then, but came to realize it's not a bad thing. It doesn't change who I am. But I'm glad I came to terms with it finally nonetheless.

You may have gotten blocked in the âwinc*st-adjacentâ craze a few months back. Everyone who has ever reblogged a reblog of a reblog from a winc*st shipper got canceled. I have the tag blocked, and sometimes you post things that were at one point tagged as winc*st.
I absolutely understand that there are some people who need a bullet-proof boundary around things like that. That doesnât make all the people who donât need that hard boundary into predators. Purity culture is a mess.
Iâm very sorry if those blocks hurt you, because you are the last person on earth to deserve it.

one of them blocked me almost from the moment i made this blog, it's more confusing than anything else (that little part of my brain that fears rejection and the larger part that is continually anxiety-ridden goes, but what did I do?! even though consciously i realize it's not a big deal in the scheme of things! it's just jarring when i go to reblog an edit from S1 or something and tumblr says, "no, you can't do that!" me: "i only want to appreciate the nice posts!" ;___;).
as far as i know, i didn't get caught in the great blocklist purge, but a few of my close friends/mutuals did, and that hurt me more than when i'm blocked myself because i love them and know what amazing people they are (mutuals i will be glad to be canceled with, they're burning all the witches even if you aren't one, but i will happily claim my witchery. <3 besides, if one must block me, at least block me for my gothic romanticism soul mate meta and my annoyingly effusive love/dean feelings posts đ), and that list was nothing but a bizarre/ugly public shamefest (i block people for things i find upsetting, too, hence why half of dean cr*tical/anti fandom is on my list lol, but i have no intention of dragging them in a mass post, we are in completely separate circles and that's fine! the blacklist also exists to help us ignore topics we don't want to see for whatever reason, it's a very helpful feature and doesn't require drama...we all have the prerogative to make our own spaces as comfortable and enjoyable for ourselves as possible, but it doesn't need to be widely disseminated). some of the people on that list didn't even belong there, there was really no care or caution about who that might hurt - not that perceived (judgmental) "guilt" matters on an issue like this, because the puritanical outlook of doing that to people is so oppressive and disturbing in and of itself. self-protection is valid and important and always subjective. purity culture is...not interested in that, it's interested in thought policing and deriding people. it's like new wave mccarthyism, putting people on a list of sinners - "are you now or have you ever been [insert 'offense' here]." and i get that it started from a place of caring about real issues, which is a whole other important discussion, but applying that to transformative FICTIONAL fandom to the point where real people, who may potentially be vulnerable or sorting through difficulties of their own, are put on blast because they were seen dancing in the moonlight is one of my least favorite phenomenons in current fandom culture. (also, people tag things with ship names for various reasons all the time even when it's totally innocuous - there was a post on my dash the other day that was blacklisted, not even spn fandom, and i clicked on it out of curiosity and the post wasn't even about a ship, it was a quote, but someone along the way had probably tagged it for their own interests/blog and that's completely fine too!) there is also the aspect to consider that many corners of fandom are predominately women-created content, and women are chastened and judged so often for exploring and communicating and imagining that all we're doing is fueling more silencing of safe spaces for female expressionism.
tl;dr i'm sorry you didn't ask for an essay, but this has been on my mind SO much lately.
it makes me sad that we do have such stringent dividing lines and that fandom has become a bit of a minefield because i think it's stifling creativity and discussion in some ways since that divisiveness has fueled a lot of unfair bullying. we're supposed to be having fun! i love how passionate so many of us are! i wish we could have that without the toxicity, but i know every fandom has factions like this. this is very rambly, but in sum - purity culture is a mess - you're right.

21 tips for writing humor

There are many theories as to the nature, science, and reason for humor. It's an element of human behavior that seems objective in the skill that is required to execute it successfully, and yet just as subjective for how unpredictably it can hit every individual audience member. Today, I'm going to talk about the various forms that humor takes, and give you some tips for making your humorous story a success. To start with, lets look at what I will call the âfive scales of comedyâ. (Please note that the following is not intended as definitive list of the only sources and scales of humor in the world, only the ones that I have been able to identify within my own life, time, limited understanding, and culture. Also note that I will use the word âHumorâ instead of the word âComedy,â simply because I do not want this discussion on genres to be confused for the type of story that is opposite of Tragedy.)
The Five Scales of Comedy
A story or other source of humor can usually be found along the lines of five different scales. These are: High Humor vs Low Humor, Sweet Humor vs Acidic Humor, Distanced Humor vs Close Humor, Predatory Humor vs Reflective Humor, and Clever vs Ridiculous Humor. These scales stand apart from the sub-genres of humor (dark, slapstick, dry, etc...), and have to do with how the humor affects the audience. Note that there is no âbestâ type of humor; there is only humor that works in different ways and which impacts different sorts of people. So wherever you find your story in the scales, know that there is no need to change it unless you want to. Also, the names of the scales are just thatânames. Just because your story falls into the category of âlowâ humor, doesn't mean that it is any less valuable than âhighâ humor.
Range 1: High Humor
Within the range of High vs Low humor, what we are discussing is the how large an audience we are trying to reach. High humor involves jokes and comical situations that are only understood by a very select group of people. An example might be a comedy series that focuses its humor on the experience of working in a corporate office (like ⌠The Office), or perhaps political commentary. These are only funny to those people who have shared the experience or the political knowledge of the person generating the humor. Basically, the higher the humor, the more the entire set-up begins to resemble an inside joke. This type of humor is excellent for gaining the interest of select demographics who you may want to address. For example, if you only want to talk to nerds (I say non-insultingly because I am one and am proud of it), you might have lots of references to science fiction and fantasy.
Range 1: Low Humor
On the opposite side of the range, you have Low Humor. Low Humor deals with topics, jokes, and situations that are more universal to the human experience. An easy example of this is a fart joke. Everyone in the world farts, and most people are in touch enough with their inner child to think that it is funny if the joke is skillfully set up. Again, there is nothing wrong with low humor; and in certain situations it is even preferable. The lower your humor, the larger your potential audience can be. Other examples of low humor might be family life, slapstick, and situational comedy based on everyday experience. Shows like Spongebob Squarepants, for example, involve such a low degree of comedy that people of all ages, demographics, and locations across the world are able to find delight in it. Â
 Range 2: Sweet Humor
The next range of humor, Sweet vs Acidic, deals with the intensity of the humor itself. Sweet Humor involves jokes, situations, and characters that require less pain and cynicism to appreciate. For example, a story that involves simple characters bumbling around, making mistakes, overcoming, and becoming better people for it would generally fall into the range of Sweet. We don't laugh at their misfortune (or if we do, its lighthearted and with limited consequences, like slipping on a banana peel), we laugh because their situations are joyfully amusing. Â
An example of this are the sort of jokes and humor found in Youtube âLets Plays,â like those of Markiplier and Jacksepticeye. We don't laugh because of anything bad happening to these people (or the characters that they play); we laugh because they are eccentric, silly, and joyful in a way that also makes us feel joyful. This form of humor can be tremendously encouraging and uplifting to the types of readers who enjoy it.
Range 2: Acidic Humor
On the other hand, we have Acidic humor. Much like with food, most people have strong preferences and limits to how acidic (spicy, sour, or bitter) they like their humor. Acidic humor deals with laughing at topics that are increasingly serious or even tragic, such as death, illness, social injustice, etc... A popular example of acidic humor is South Park. Those of us who enjoy acidic humor will find ourselves laughing at topics that would otherwise likely bring us to tears. The power of acidic humor is that it helps its appreciators to cope with the difficult truths of life, and also to acknowledge problems that we are otherwise tempted to ignore because they are too hard to think about. Â
An example of an issue addressed in South Park is the elderly, their treatment, and our fear that we will face the same. Sure, when we watch an episode we laugh when the younger characters mistreat and abuse the elderly in the community. However, a conscientious viewer will then begin the chew on the issue, once the episode is over. We'll look at our own actions, and begin to wonder if our treatment of the elderly is just as bad. Because of the acidic humor, these difficult truths come to the forefront of our minds, we gain the courage to actually think about them, and we can even bring them up in discussion with others. This discussion can then lead to people changing the world for the better.
Range 3: Distanced Humor Â
This range has to deal with the necessary emotional distance we need in order to be able to appreciate a certain level of humor. Even with lighthearted humor like slapstick, which has very low acidity, the audience needs to be distanced in order to laugh. For example, if I watch Bugs Bunny wallop Elmer Fudd on the head with a mallet, it's generally pretty damn funny. I know that these characters are both flat cartoons with limited depth to their character, and that as non-beings they don't really feel pain. Therefore, I don't have empathy to Elmer's pain (because it is really non-existent), and I can laugh. However, if the show were to show me Elmer's life, how he's been a vegan but famine has caused him to need to find meat to feed his family, and how he struggles to even shoot at a rabbit because it makes him feel like he's betraying himself; then I'm not going to laugh if Bugs hit him with a hammer. I'm too close, and need emotional distance in order for my empathy to not get in the way of my humor.
Range 3: Close Humor
We do not need distance in order to find something funny. With close humor, the jokes and situations actually rely on how well we know the characters and how much we empathize with them. An example of Close Humor is Scrubs. In the show actually find ourselves within the mind of the protagonist, JD, and seeing the entire world through his eyes. He tells us about his insecurities, his genuine pain, his fears, and we actually really care about him as a character. Yet, we find humor in his minor misfortunes and even in his silly victories. The closeness of our perspective amplifies the events that happen in his life in a way that distanced humor cannot achieve. For example, when he stutters and says something embarrassing in front of someone he idolizes, we find ourselves giggling. If Elmer Fudd were to stutter in front of someone he idolized, we wouldn't laugh nearly so hard because we can't possibly understand the stakes of the moment or why meeting this person is so important to him. We need to be close to a character for Close Humor to work.
Range 4: Predatory Humor
With the range of Predatory Humor vs Reflective humor, we are discussing who will be the âbuttâ or target of the joke. (Note that a joke does not necessarily need a butt, as we will discuss later.) While often used in a negative way, in order to bully and shame others, predatory humor is not a bad thing in and of itself. Predatory humor can be used to tackle and harm negative constructs and ideas in our society. For example, Fairly Odd Parents used to frequently attack neglectful and abusive parenting. Note that the while Timmy's (the protagonist of the show) Parents were frequently the butt of jokes, they were also not the real target (just like parents in general were not the target). The targets were their selfish and non-reflective actions that had damaging effects on their son. We can use predatory humor to attack ideas, and point out the evils that are so often overlooked in society. The trick is to always keep vigilance of your own mind, actions, and motives to makes sure that you do not become a bully who targets the people themselves. Because even if someone acts in an evil way, bullying them will never cause that to change.
Range 4: Reflective Humor
On the other side of this range we have Reflective Humor, which serves to make fun of itself. Again using South Park as an example, the creators would often make their own beliefs and ideals the target of their ridicule. For example, it's fairly clear that the show speaks in favor of LGBT rights and for their being accepted as equals in society. However, they also go as far as to mock people who are so over-enthusiastic and pro-LGBT (to the point of hypocrisy). Another example is when the show begins to teach a moral lesson, the writers will often make fun of themselves through the character of Kyle for being so preachy. The effect of the show making fun of itself is two-fold. First, those of us whose beliefs South Park mocks feel like the show is being fair. Thus, we continue to listen to and respect the views of the creators, even if we don't always agree. Second, we trust the messages of a story more when it has the integrity to point out its own failings. Note that unlike with other scales, Reflective and Predatory Humor can actually be interwoven so that a joke or story makes fun of itself just as much as its target.
Range 5: Clever Humor
The last range of humor that we'll discuss is that of Clever vs Ridiculous. This range is fairly self-explanatory, but the core of its nature is what sort of punchline is delivered at the end of a humorous situation. Clever humor takes the audience expectation and amplifies or twists it to an unexpected place. You can see this in the work of comedians such as Louis CK and Demetri Martin. Martin, for example, has a humorous bit about doorways that say âExit Only.â The joke then involves his compulsive desire to tell store workers that they underestimate the potential of those doors by about 50%. The delivery of the punchline is true and logical, but it such a way that it humorously exceeds audience expectation.
Range 5: Ridiculous Humor
Opposite of Clever Humor, we have ridiculous humor. This is when the punchline of a humorous situation is so absurd that we can't help but laugh. And example of this is the Spongebob Squarepants episode where he and Squidward get lost while delivering a pizza. They become lost in the wilderness and spend the episode becoming more and more so. Then, right at the end, Spongebob exclaims that they are saved because he's found a big beautiful boulder, the likes of which the pioneers used to ride for miles. And, to make matters even more ridiculous, the boulder worksâdriving just like a car. We find humor because the punchline is simply so grandiosely absurd that we can't help but enjoy it. Note that both Clever and Ridiculous humor require a great amount of skill and thought to pull off successfully, it's just a matter of your preference and your target audience. Â
The Five Sources of Humor
Once we identify what type of humor we are employing by using the scales, the next thing to consider is what makes our stories funny. This is something of a challenge, because we don't generally put much thought into why humor makes us feel the way it does. The humor either hits or misses, and we laugh or we don't. Making matters even more complicated is that there are so many theories as to why and how humor worksâwith everyone from Aristotle to Freud interjecting an opinion. But if we look at the particular sorts of things that make people laugh, we can improve how we use humor in our stories.
Source 1: Misfortune Â
Whether a cartoon character is slipping on a banana peel, or a character in a romantic comedy finds themselves in an embarrassing situation, the misfortune of others seems to be the most popular form of humor. This is why slapstick and funny home videos have been so prevalent in modern humor. Plato and Aristotle seemed to believe that this was because such humor made the audience feel superior to the characters being ridiculed (Superiority Theory). This seems especially true when we see unlikable characters (like the villain in a children's cartoon) experience misfortune in a comical way. Â
Though Superiority Theory has its place, I would assert that there is an alternative way that people enjoy misfortune. Perhaps the experience of slipping on a banana peel or being in an embarrassing situation is funny because of our own memories of experiencing the same thing or something similar. Freud and others theorized that humor was a release of energy (Relief Theory). Maybe our camaraderie with the character, mixed with emotional distance from the scene we are watching, creates a safe space to release our own stored feelings of pain or embarrassment. Thus laughter really does become a healing force.
Source 2: Absurdity
In his essay âThe Myth of Sisyphusâ, Albert Camus defines and explains the absurd.
âIt's absurdâ means âIt's impossibleâ but also âIt's contradictory.â If I see a man armed with only a sword attack a group of machine guns, I shall consider his act to be absurd. But it is so solely by virtue of the disproportion between his interaction and the reality he will encounter. [âŚ] Likewise we shall deem a verdict absurd when we contrast it with the verdict the facts apparently dictated. (29)
Though Camus is not talking about humor (rather the existentialist question), I think that the absurd is a source of humor. Audiences are often entertained by the absurdity of a situation. And by looking at Camus' explanation, we can hypothesize that this form of humor comes from the disproportionate contrast of action and situation. An example of this might be one of the last battle-scenes in Braveheart. In this scene, victory looks unlikely, the dramatic tension is high, and it seems to be the most serious moment imaginable. Then, upon being signaled, the protagonist's soldiers pull up their kilts and reveal their bare asses to the enemy. It's so unexpected and so absurd, that many people cannot help but to keel over laughing.
This scene is completely disproportionate to what we would expect to see in this dramatic a moment. The action does not suit the situation, but in a strange way it also kind of doesâwith the action juxtaposing itself against the situation. Perhaps, just like with misfortune, absurd humor creates a needed release of energy, connected to our own sense of existentialist absurdism. The absurd could then serve to release our feelings of despair in a positive light. The show, Rick and Morty, seems to be built on this connection between absurd humor blended with existentialism and nihilism. Of course, this is just a theory. What you'll want to focus on when writing absurd humor is the relationship of your characters' actions to the situations that they find themselves in. Are they lost in the desert? Have them climb a boulder and ride it home. The stronger the contrast between action and situation, the higher you'll make the potential for absurdity.
Source 3: Wit
Wit is the essence of Clever Humor; its the pithy intelligence that makes us laugh because of all the thought put into a situation. When we hear a witty joke or are part of a witty situation, we find ourselves moving in a forward humorous momentum, instead of the backwards and diagonal momentum of the absurd. But we don't stop at the expected location. For example my mother called me a few months ago, asking me if I was going to wish my brother a happy birthday. The expected response for this sort of set-up/situation is to answer âYesâ or âNoâ. But I went forward and beyond âNoâ by asking why she wanted me to congratulate my brother for being one year closer to death (I have an acidic sense of humor sometimes). This reply was much more thoughtful than what my mother expected, and pointlessly taken beyond the realm of reason. Therefore, she found it funny.
Perhaps there is an element of the absurd in any given amount of witty humor. It's as if we are taking extra steps to be as intelligent and rational as possibleâending with us standing somewhere close to the absurd. Using Camus' illustration of absurdity, the soldier with a sword wouldn't necessarily attack the machine guns, but instead go home, refusing to sacrifice his life to be a metaphor. You can see this sort of humor in Youtube series such as How it Should Have Ended. In this series, animators take a closer look at popular movies and then make efforts to enforce logic in worlds and characters that didn't have them. This includes having Severus Snape use his time-travel gizmo to go back in time and kill Voldemort before he became a problemâan action that is so logical that it erases the need for any of the Harry Potter stories to even happen. So when you create witty humor, look to take things beyond the realm of expectationâaiming for the absurdly reasonable.
Source 4: Anti-humor Â
Anti-humor is when something is so unfunny that it becomes funny, sort of like puns. As we find delight in the absurd and the unexpected, humor and jokes can begin to feel predictable. We begin to look for the solution in jokes, and we're usually smart enough to begin to be able to predict it. In this case, the expected becomes surprising. An example is the classic: âWhy did the chicken cross the road? To get to the other side.â If you haven't heard it before, this anti-humor joke is actually kind of funny. A great example of this are the great collection anti-jokes found online. Â
You can take anti-jokes to the next level using extremely acidic humor. This is where you take serious, grievous, or tragic topics and use them as the punchline for your joke. For example, a joke about a fatal illness is not funny because the person making the joke finds that topic amusing (otherwise that person needs some counseling). A joke about fatal illness can be funny to some people for the exact opposite reasonâbecause of how dark and unfunny it is. Again, I believe this ties into a release of negative energy while in a safe space, and the processing of difficult emotions. If you plan to use the extreme form of anti-humor, please note that many people have very legitimate reasons for not enjoying it. So be careful, and give your audience some sort of forewarning so that you do not spring something so emotionally charged on them without their consent.
Source 5: Familiarity and Value
When I was taking university writing classes, I had an extremely eccentric professor who had all sorts of mannerisms that were unique to him. In the moments when he was particularly eccentric and acting out of his true nature (which he was quite comfortable with), I would find myself laughing, even if the situation wasn't funny. I think others can relate to this, as we all love to talk about fun people that we used to know, and find ourselves laughing even when what we are remembering isn't particularly funny. We laugh because those people acting happily out of their own nature gave us joy, and so anything they do creates a laughter that feels akin to humor. Â
This mirth through familiarity can be accomplished in stories as well. In Bob's Burgers, for example, we really don't even begin to understand the humor until we develop an attachment and feelings for each individual character. Sure the situations are mildly amusing, but true laughter and humor doesn't begin until we know the characters, their likes, their dislikes, and who they are deep down inside. Once we know that, we laugh as each character acts out of their nature. When we see Louise (one of the protagonists) act with mischievous intent, we laugh even before we know what she's doing because we are happy that she is about to act out of who she really is. Note that this is a rather difficult sort of humor to pull off because you have to create a relationship between the characters and the audience before the humor will be possible.
General Tips for Humor
Tip 1: Create a patterned and uniform blend of humor for your story.
When you choose what sort of humor you plan to use in your story, the best way of maintaining audience enjoyment is to keep it constant. Just like when we watch a stand-up comedian, we begin to develop a taste and sense of expectation for whatever we are watching or reading. Over time, your audience will begin to really appreciate the flavor of your humor, and that appreciation will make your jokes increasingly funny (so long as they are creative and continue to be intelligently crafted). The pattern will also make all of your jokes seem, feel, and become purposeful. Your audience will enjoy this much more than if you seem like you are desperately trying to milk the humor from anything you can get your hands on (you perv). Â
I recommend you begin by analyzing the origins of humor in your story's world. Is the world simply absurd, with unseen gods of chaos just dropping coconuts on people's heads for pure amusement? Does the humor come from a specific character? A group of funny people living in a serious world that they must learn to cope with through humor? A funny narrator with a unique perspective on life? Once you figure out the origins, determine where your humor will fit on the scales (it doesn't have to be on any extreme, you can stay in the middle of the scales and still be hilarious); and then figure out the source.
Tip 2: Create a genuine story with genuine characters, in order for humor to gain the most power.
If we value stories in terms of how much people enjoy and remember them, the best humor stories are those with good plots and characters. This may seem counter-intuitive when your intent is to make your audience laugh, but think of it this way. If an audience wants just concentrated jokes, they will read a joke-book. Your audience is choosing to dredge through the murky waters of story in order to find the humor with more difficulty because they want a blend of story and humor. Â
An example of this is the movie,âAustin Powers.â Many people, myself included, watched these movies before we ever watched the James Bond movies that they were making fun of. And we enjoyed them greatly, and laughed the entire way through. Why? Because the characters and story, ridiculous as they were, were good enough that we actually invested our interest and emotions into them. As an added bonus, the story has become timeless and respected in its own right. Even if we face a future where nobody knows who James Bond is, the Austin Powers movies will be able to stand on their own merit because they are more than just jokes. Â
Tip 3: Be careful about dating yourself.
Speaking of parody and humor losing its ability to be funny, let's talk about references that date our stories. Humor at the expense of popular culture (movies, politicians, celebrities) is a fun ploy of high-humor. It's especially useful for nighttime comedy shows that will be lost to time anyways, within a couple years. When you are writing a novel, however, you are trying to create something that will last a bit longer than that. Additionally, novels take a lot longer to write than an episode of a late night comedy show. This means that by the time you publish and people begin to discover your book, they may not know who the vapid pop star you're making fun of is. Your humor will be lost to time, and your book quite possibly forgotten. Of course, I'm not telling you that you can't use this sort of humor, just that you should be aware of the risks it holds.
Tip 4: Mark every line that is supposed to be funny, and make sure that it is.
Nothing detracts from a story or from a spirit of jovial humor so much as an obvious joke that falls flat. It's like watching an acrobatics show. If the acrobat falls on their face too many times you'll either be embarrassed for them or you'll empathize and start worrying for their safety. Either way, you won't find the situation amusing. In your own personal copy of the manuscript, mark every joke for analysis of whether it actually succeeds and whether it serves to empower the story. Then, ask your editors, test-readers, and writing partner to circle every point that they genuinely found funny. Be sure to pick test-readers who fall into the niche you are writing for, as well as those who do not. If nobody but you marked a specific joke, then you need to either get feedback for how to make it funnier, or else cut it.
Tip 5: Write within your own expertise and authority.
This does not mean that you can't laugh at things, and poke fun at things that are outside your realm of expertise, so long as you have done your research. But consider the power of an insider making a joke about something that you are a part of vs an outsider doing the same. It would be like the difference between me calling most writers narcissists (as I am one, and know that it is pretty true in most instances) and a politician making a joke and calling writers narcissists. I mean, what right does that asshole have to judge us, even if it is true? The point is that your jokes gain power when you can tell them with the confidence of an insider. Not only that, but your audience who is a part of the group at the butt of the joke, will be much more gracious and feel far less attacked when the joke comes from one of their own. Â
Tip 6: Humor is personal Â
Humor is something that is highly individual to specific groups and people. For example, I do not understand, nor am I really able to appreciate most British or Spanish comedies. This is not because they aren't funny; they are just as valid and hilarious as every form of comedy that I do enjoy. The reason is simply that because of either how I was raised, my life experiences or because of who I am by nature, I can't enjoy them any more than I can enjoy olives on my pizza (seriously, I hate them). It doesn't matter how artfully these types of humor are composed, there is simply no effect akin to joy, amusement, or laughter when I come across them. In other words, the problem is me and not them. Â
All this is to make three points. First, it may be more difficult to find test-readers and worthwhile criticism for humorous work. Even if I'm really good at critiquing stories, I will not be able to give you any helpful feedback if your humor doesn't match with mine. And that isn't your fault any more than it's my fault. It's just a difference in taste. Second, humor is as personal and close to the heart as any other story or craft. When you create a joke, you are channeling whatever emotions and mixes of experiences have led you to the type of humor you have. So recognize the emotional bond between yourself and your humor. Â
The third piece of advice is for those on the other end of the spectrum, those experiencing the humor of others and perhaps trying to give advice. Please recognize that others' sense of humor is just as valid as yours. Whether their sense of humor is simple, complex, dry, witty, dark, acidic, sweet, or anything in between, it is their sense of humor and not yours. Be careful in how you voice any attempts at criticism, as there are few ways to break your friends' trust and confidence as completely as when you tell them, âThat's not funny.â You might as well be telling them that their heart sucks, and they are a sucky person. Â
Instead, acknowledge the differences in people's humor, value it even if that humor makes you uncomfortable, and voice your criticisms accordingly. Try: âThis joke wasn't successful with me, and might be perceived as racist/bullying/insensitive to some readers; so seek other feedback to see if it's just me.â You will voicing just as honest an opinion, without formulating a direct attack against the person who has trusted you with something so delicate to them. Â
Weekly Recommended Watching: Doraleous and Associates by Hank and Jed. (A free animated fantasy Youtube series that manages to successfully mesh several humor types with an over-arching plot. Examine how even there are plot elements that are serious and even sad, the series maintains its humor through well-balanced distance and wit. And if this form of humor does not amuse you, that is perfectly valid and your own unique sense of humor is still a valuable thing.)

The police officers told him they needed to ask him a few questions. What they forgot to mention was he would be locked in a small, remarkably bare room for five hours with a police officer who was dead set in viewing him as a suspect. Danny had never been more relieved to get out of a room before in his life. Yeah, he understood family members needed to be questioned due to the statistics surrounding such crimes, but seriously! Did someone as scrawny as him really look like he could have hurt Winston that badly without getting any sort of injury in the process?
However, he couldn't really blame them for being suspicious, especially when it came to his whereabouts the previous night. How do you rationally explain you were chased by a murderous robot-ghost-thing? The obvious answer was to avoid the topic all together. He hoped he was convincing enough when he said he and his friends had taken a walk in the evening and returned to Sam's house to watch some movies. He specifically avoided mentioning the park. There was no telling what the officers would think if they learned he might have been around when it got torn up. He was actually kind of surprised no one in the precinct had mentioned it.
A few times during his interview, he had nervously flattened his bangs a few times, hoping to hide the cut he had suddenly remembered getting at the beginning of his terrifying adventure. The officer interviewing him had noticed the motion, which caused him to leave it alone the rest of the time he was in the room. Surprisingly, Danny wasn't asked about it. A little wary after he was finished and allowed to exit the room, he touched the spot only to find smooth skin. It took a lot of self-control to not dash to a reflective surface and examine his forehead. There was no use in making the officers more suspicious. As weird as a missing cut was he could wait until he got home to check.
Scratch that⌠he could check after he found a place to stay for a while. As he was about to exit the station, an older officer kindly reminded him of the fact his house was currently considered a crime scene. After apologizing for a lack of effort from the staff for trying to contact his family and promising to personally look into it in the morning, he directed Danny to a nearby phone situated at the front desk.
Danny was a little surprised at the kind attitude of the officer as he had been dealing with a special type of dick for the past several hours, but it was a nice change. Shaking his head a little, he moved to the phone to call Sam, praying she was still awake as it was approaching midnight. Both of his friends told him they wanted an update, but with it being late and he being emotionally, physically, and mentally drained, the only topic he wanted to discuss involved where he would be staying for the night.
As he was dialing her number, the door to the station opened and a tall man strolled in. The newcomer was tall and rather thin. He wore a clean black business suit which appeared to be expertly cared for and rather expensive. Gray hair had been slicked back into a neat ponytail, and calculating cold blue eyes surveyed his surroundings. Danny dropped the phone in surprise as he realized the man in front of him was the one and only Vlad Masters.
The sound from the phone brought him to Masters' attention, causing the man to adopt an unsettling grin. "Why here you are! I've been looking all over for you!" The tone of his voice and his expression adopted a semblance of concern, but it did not reach his eyes. "I was so worried after I found out what happened to Winston. My condolences, but I'm glad you're safe and sound."
"Don't talk about Winston like he's dead!" Danny snapped. "Look, can you just go away? If you haven't realized, it's been a pretty bad day for me, and I don't feel like talking to you right now."
"Of course. How inconsiderate of me. After everything you've been through today, you must be exhausted. Come, I'll make sure you're well taken care of."
It took Danny a moment to grasp the implications of Vlad's statement. "Wait⌠what? There's no way I'm going with you!"
"Poor boy, you must be more tired than you realize." The businessman pinched the bridge of his nose as he let out a dramatic sigh. "Don't you remember? It was determined that you would be placed into my care if anything were to happen to Winston."
"That's news to me!"
"Excuse me, but what exactly is going on here?" The sound of the officer's voice made him jump. He had forgotten there was another soul in the room. However, he couldn't be more relieved. Being in the room alone with the businessman was an unnerving thought. It was even more relieving when he realized the officer seemed to be equally suspicious.
In a truly professional manner, Vlad introduced himself and explained his relationship to Danny as well as his involvement in the custody battle. Again, he mentioned how he was now to act as a guardian in Winston's stead.
"I already told you, I'm not going anywhere with you!" Danny growled as he glared at the man. Something was very wrong with the picture. Winston didn't trust Vlad, and there was no way he would let him fall into the billionaire's hands.
"You have to forgive the boy. We had a little spat the last time we saw each other, and I'm afraid he hasn't forgiven me," Vlad apologetically explained to the officer.
"Spat? You broke into my house?"
Before Vlad could respond, the officer held up his hand to halt the brewing argument. "Mr. Masters, do you have some sort of proof you can take the boy?" Vlad's expression quickly changed from shocked to insulted as the officer spoke. "Surely a man of your standing can understand our position. With the way Mr. Wolfe was attacked, we cannot rule anyone out as a potential suspect. With you being involved in a custody battle and Danny's status as a minor, we are rather uncomfortable sending him on his way like this. I'm also fairly certain you weren't notified of the situationâŚ" The officer's eyes narrowed as he appraised the man. "Which leads me to wonder how you found out."
"One of my staff members was going to drop off some papers at the house when she saw the police cars and asked what happened" Vlad explained with an impatient air. "But that's not important right nowâŚ"
As he watched Vlad begin to argue with the officer, Danny couldn't help but feel a rush of gratitude. For whatever reason, the officer did not seem to believe Vlad's story and generally seemed concerned for his wellbeing.
Everything seemed to be going in his favor when Danny was nearly bowled over by a sudden blast of cold air rushed by him. Startled, he started looking around to find some possible source⌠and open window, a vent, something to explain it. While he tried to wrack his brains for some other answer when the normal explanations were ruled out, he noticed the officer stumble slightly. He didn't think anything of it until the man rubbed his forehead and excused himself for a moment.
Rather unsettled by the officer's display and being left alone with Vlad, Danny moved back to the phone to attempt to resume his call. Though he was able to reach Sam's house this time, a presumed butler answered and informed him that "Miss Samantha is asleep and no longer taking calls for the night." While Danny was pretty sure it was a lie, he went with it and asked the man to give a message to her when he could.
Displeased by the turn of events, he was about to try calling Tucker when the officer returned to the room. Something did not seem right as he looked at him. The man's posture seemed stiff, and his eyes were unfocused and reddish. Wait⌠Danny blinked and rubbed his eyes before checking again. The man's eyes were actually red! Weren't they brown before?
"Sorry for the inconvenience." The officer's voice had an unusual mechanical quality to it⌠almost as if the words he was saying weren't actually his. He held up a document of some sorts as he spoke again. "It seems like someone did verify this earlier, but just forgot to place it somewhere it could be found."
"Does this mean everything's in order?" Vlad asked with a voice filled with hardly concealed delight.
"Yes. You can take the boy. We'll be in touch within the next few days to let you know how Wolfe is doing."
"Splendid! Come on my boy, it's time to go!"
Danny backed away as Vlad beckoned to him, nearly tripping over the desk in the process. His mind was screaming all sorts of warnings at him. The entire situation felt wrong, but he had no idea how to escape it. Vlad was blocking his way to the front door, and he doubted the few officers left in the building would appreciate a desperate search for the rear exit.
"What did you do to him?" he demanded as his eyes darted between both men before he pointed at Vlad. He knew he probably wasn't going to get an answer, but he hoped he could stall the man long enough to come up with some sort of plan.
"Pardon me? Whatever do you mean?"
"Y-you know what I mean!" While he tried to keep the anger in his voice, it was quickly giving way to panic. Vlad kept moving towards him wearing an increasingly predatory expression which was really creeping him out. Strangely, the thought of accidently falling through the wall crossed his mind. Unsettling as it was, it was a far better situation than the one he was currently in. "The officer's not acting right!"
Vlad replied, but his words were drowned out as a strange coldness started to seep into his body, quickly filling every aspect. He tried to escape, thinking it was somehow tied to where he was standing, but his legs wouldn't respond. They felt heavy and strangely detached; his arms were beginning to feel the same way. He tried to yell out without any success. He soon realized his mind was being pushed further away from the sensations of his body and into something like a dark crevasse to be stored and forgotten.
But the coldness was not finished. It briefly brushed against his mind and seemed to whisper in an almost familiar voice, "Relax⌠It'll be safer for you and me if you doâŚ"
Danny's last conscious thought before the darkness completely took him was to wonder if he was ever going to wake up.

When he came to, Danny found himself lying on his back and staring at an unfamiliar white ceiling. His mind felt groggy and his body heavy. Though he wasn't sure, he felt as if he had been asleep for quite some time. Sitting up, he tried to remember how he got where he was⌠only, he didn't know where that might be.
Looking around, he realized something wasn't right. The room he was in was rather large. It was a bedroom, not much different from Sam's, only it didn't have any posters or the same dark decorations. In fact, the room was mostly white save for some wooden furniture. Even the four-poster bed he was sitting on had a white comforter and curtains. The only real decoration in the room was a painting on the wall directly across from him which seemed to show military conquest with⌠a paranormal influence. It was rather grotesques.
The blank room gave him an uneasy feeling. Although it definitely wasn't, it gave him the feeling he was in a jail of sorts. Unnerved, he slowly got up and moved to the room's single window. After moving the curtains aside, he cursed as he realized the glass was heavily frosted, preventing him from seeing any scenery. His next move was to try the door, but it was locked.
After a panicked few minutes trying everything he could think of to attempt to open the door, he placed his back against the door and slid down it. What was he going to do? The better question was what was going to happen to him? With the room being blank, it gave him no indication of what he should expect. He should, he supposed, be thankful for it, but the wait might be too much for him to handle. What was the old adage? The suspense is worse than the actual event? He really hoped that wouldn't be the case.

The sound of one of her parents calling for her to come into the downstairs wafted through the room, however, Sam was dead set on ignoring the summons. There were far more important things on her mind than dealing with whatever new 'daughter improvement project' they had come up with.
She was incredibly worried about her friend who neither she nor Tucker had heard from in a little over two days. At first she thought it might be due to being overwhelmed by suddenly finding out the man who raised him had been severely attacked and/or the police being jerks, but a call earlier in the day really concerned her.
She had been thinking about calling the police in the morning (while skipping class due to a feigned illness), however they beat her to the punch. Around eleven, she had received a call from one of the detectives asking her if she had heard from Danny. She told him no right before demanding to know what was wrong. Though it took a little bit of coaxing (and a reminder of her parents' influences), the officer admitted they had no idea where the boy was. He disappeared after his interview with another officer, and though they hated to admit it, after failing to contact him or anyone else who might have the boy, he was being labeled as a missing person. Her immediate response was to insult the competence of him and the rest of the force as the boy had gone missing from underneath their noses, but after she calmed down a bit, she promised to help in whatever way she could.
Sam sat down on her large purple clad bed and stared up at one of the posters on the ceiling as she tried to understand the situation. Her friend, who seemed to attract terrible and odd events, was now missing. Danny had tried to contact her the night he disappeared, but her family had forbidden her from further calls when she had returned home that night after they learned about the attack on Winston. Somehow, they had gotten the notion whatever had harmed Winston could attack her if she continued to talk to Danny. Though it was kind of nice to know they cared, they had taken it way overbroad.
But what was strange about the situation was there was no security image of Danny leaving the precinct. The officer had explained to her they had installed cameras a while back after someone had tried to break in to the office in an attempt to steal their guns. Due to safely concerns, they regularly had them checked, but the night Danny disappeared, they had a major malfunction. There was an image of him entering the entrance area, but after a few minutes, the image distorted so badly they could not make heads or tails of it. It also seemed to return to normal rather suddenly after a while, but Danny was long gone by then.
A look at the clock told her she was going to have to wait a while before she could contact Tucker. Unlike her, he had been forced to go to school. She had no idea if he already knew Danny was missing, but no matter what, he was going to help her try to find him. Tucker was the probably the only person in town who could possibly get an image off of the damaged security tape, and the only other person (besides her) who Danny had trusted with his issues. They had to try and do what they could to help him.

"So, any luck?" Sam asked the boy currently sitting on her rug surrounded by any number of other electronic equipment. He had been staring at the screen of his PDA with an intense look for quite some time.
She had managed to contact Tucker mere moments after he was finished with his classes for the day and explained the situation. After freaking out a bit, he told her he would be over soon after he made a quick stop. He arrived about forty minutes later looking more determined than he had ever seen him while carrying a bookbag filled to the brim with tech supplies she had never seen before. After asking if he needed anything, Tucker quickly went to work with his task.
"âŚWhoever did this to this footage is really goodâŚ" he eventually replied after a few more minutes of silence.
"What do you mean?" Sam asked hesitantly. It was rare to hear such a tone in Tucker's voice when it came to technology. He could usually work his way around a system in a few seconds, minutes if it was more complicated, but this was really causing him problems.
"It's hard to explain⌠Usually, people just modify existing images when they don't something seen, but this guy actually managed to replace some of the footage with an error screenâŚ"
"So⌠it's gone⌠Like completely, gone? You can't trace it or anything?" There was no way for her to hide the hint of panic in her voice. If Tucker couldn't bring up anything, no one could⌠which meant they weren't going to have anything to use to find Danny.
A small laugh escaped Tucker, which caused her to stare at the boy. "Jeez, Sam, you shouldn't think so little of me. Who do you think I am? This guy, though good, made a small mistake. I guess he got interrupted or something because he started just covering up the image after a while instead of changing it. To most people, it's nearly impossible to catch, but it's there. Just give me a little bit of timeâŚ."
"A little bit of time?" Sam repeated as she watched him frantically work with his PDA. "How long are we talking about?"
He hit a few more buttons on the screen before he looked up and smiled. "Does 'now' work for you?"
"Tucker, you're amazing!"
"I know, I know. But it's nice to have my fans remind me."
Sam pulled down his hat in response as she sat next to him on the floor. "Anyways, do you have the entire footage?"
"I couldn't get part of it due to the replacement⌠but it looks like a little less than half was just modifiedâŚ. So, let's see what no one wanted us to findâŚ." He pressed a button on the screen and a fuzzy image began to appear. On the footage, they could see Danny backing away from someone standing near the door. It was difficult to make out, but judging from Danny's posture, he did not seem to be happy to see the person. After a little bit, Danny stopped retreating and followed the unknown man out the door.
Without any prodding, Tucker tried to see if he could clear the image a little or at least clear up the image of the suspect. After frantically trying several different techniques, he sighed and rubbed his eyes with his free hand. According to him, even though the person had changed methods, they were still able to damage the rest of the footage.
"I'll continue to work with it when I get home," he promised. "This is going to require some big guns for me to get something useful out of this. But don't worry; I'm not going to give up. After he saved our lives, I think this is the least I can do for him."

Tucker had been booted from the house as soon as Sam's parents caught him being there. Thinking back, she was a little surprised he had managed to sneak past them in the first place since they were particularly good at catching people going up to her room. They had punished her in response by having her stay in her room for the rest of the night, which didn't bother her in the least bit.
Around seven in the evening she received a call on her cell. Noticing the number, she picked it up as quickly as possible, hoping her parents didn't hear it ringing. "Did you find anything?" she asked the caller as a form of greeting. The caller's reply was spoken too quickly and frantically for her to understand. "Whoa, slow down Tucker! I can't understand you!"
"Sam⌠it's worse than we thought!" came his panicked reply. "I managed to identify who was in the police station with Danny."
"Yeah? Well, who was it?"
"It was⌠Vlad MastersâŚ."
Sam barely registered the phone slipping from her fingers and landing on the floor. How could she be so stupid? She knew that man had an interest in getting hold of Danny and should be the first logical suspect, but she didn't realize he would have stooped so low.
Angry with herself, she reached down to grab her phone so she could calm a frantic Tucker but stopped midway as a thought crossed her mind. How were they going to be able to get Danny back from a man who had mastered in lies with an unimaginable fortune to back him up?

I just wanted to point out that the way these officers are depicted is due to experience. The ones in the borough where I grew up were usually nice, but if they had it in their minds you did something wrong, you could be treated like trash. But at the same time, they're the reason why my childhood bully wasn't excepted into the NFL - they slapped him with assault charges when he decided to get into a fight while he was in college. I have mixed feelings. The officers from the neighboring borough were wonderful.

â The fact that Wakanda was presented as an advanced country looking down on others from it's comfortable vibranium armchair but had a monarchist system that could place a ruler with 100% muscles and 0% brains at the head, along with other bothersome stuff like that, like Shuri being the head of the government's science department while she is a part of the royal family, or really, every single part of Wakanda that looks good on paper - a king with a council of people leading the different tribes - but that history has shown us very often ends up creating a dictatorship, which is really what happened in the movie and I'm surprised no one sees it.
Like, the movie literally shows us this country that's supposedly so advanced, with spies and people placed around the world, most likely putting their fingers in as many pies as possible, and an incredibly developed technology - which is frightening on many levels considering that UN or no Wakanda could blow up everything outside of its borders and people wouldn't know it until it happened -, but with a monarchist - and whatever other words could define it - governmental system that has revealed a lot of problems in its configuration. The tribes leader were literally being choked in the throne room and no one was doing anything, there was a destruction of a historical, scientific and cultural heritage being condoned by the new religious ceremony leader(???) just because the king ordered it. They would've literally tried taking over the entire non-black population (and where does that leave all the metis people? All the ones that are not white, but not black? Of middle eastern descendance? Of Asian one? Etc?) if the ex-monarch hadn't done something.
What I'm trying to ask if, what do you think of Wakanda being a good idea on paper but terrible in practice? True! Untrue? Something else?
Holy shit lady, you ask the tough questions. This is a difficult subject to cover - youâre asking me to look at the political structure of a fictional society within a disenfranchised continent - and Iâm uncertain if itâs possible to do a decent analysis without addressing heavy topics. Basically, I donât want to sound like a privileged dickwad. So I guess what I can say is - this comes from someone with a (mostly decent) American-based education, and no formal study of pre-colonial customs and political structures in Africa. I apologise for any misconstrued ideas and more than welcome any corrections to those who know more about these subjects!
I like Wakanda on paper, mostly due to the fact that the majority of Africa got completely screwed in terms of historical treatment and Iâm rooting for the continentâs people to gain their own voices again. Wakanda being such a huge thing in international popular culture might serve as an inspiration for someone who ends up being important to at least one country there. In that sense, I really like Wakanda - the idea that it can potentially inspire historically disenfranchised cultures in the real world. How practical that thought is, Iâm not sure - I might just be too idealistic.
Dictatorships can happen in non-monarchies as well, which you know -- as the most famous examples in 20th century history are not monarchies. The issue that can appear in monarchies -- or dictatorships -- is the lack of checks and balances to help keep those in power from going overboard (or the populace not having enough manpower/arms to get a dictator-like-coup out, but thatâs an entirely different discussion!)
From what we got in the movie, Wakanda does seem to lack those checks and balances and no ability to overrule a kingâs command. It seemed that they never had any sort of Magna Carta in their history (which is far from a perfect document, but did start the precedent of limiting monarchical power), and it doesnât seem thereâs anything resembling a representative government with veto power over the leader that you see in, what, 2/3rds of the world these days? (I legit have no idea, but I do know itâs wide-spread.)
But why wouldnât they have such a document limiting monarchical power or some sort of democratic process? The modern mindset across many countries around the world leans towards democracy and elected, representative governments. But it canât be denied that colonialism helped spread this, as -- at least, according to wiki -- representative democracy/liberal democracy/Western democracy all originate in Europe. So, in some way it makes sense that they didnât transition yet because they were never colonized, and they were completely self-contained so didnât have any of the outside world conflicts to force them to make changes. France helped fund the barons who pushed for the Magna Carta. France was also responsible for helping fund/arm the US in their fight to gain independence (lol France vs England history, itâs so great). External conflicts with other regions/countries caused *changes* to happen in those societies, at least from what I know of European history. Possibly happened in other continents, but Iâm just not knowledgeable enough about their histories to give specific examples.
Wakanda had no outside conflict, and with no outside conflict, you get one major source of problems eliminated. Civil wars happen for a multitude of reasons, but perhaps one of their solutions historically for kingship changing without civil war was the fight of a representative of a tribe to try and win it over. Who knows? But when youâre enclosed like Wakanda was, thereâs a lot less chance of things changing.
(On that note - their selection of a new leader is also incredibly disproportionately unfair to women. The average man is physiologically stronger and faster than the average woman. Itâs just--biology. But who knows, maybe Wakanda was the same as much of the rest of the world in terms of their thoughts of women leading in politics. Thereâs comic canon that could be different, but the MCU did a lot of changes from comic canon.)
A *lot* of things changed across the world in the 20th century, making the world much smaller. Before the 20th century, it was likely considered completely useless and nonviable to make war on other nations because, though they were more technologically advanced, itâs incredibly unlikely they had something akin to nuclear bombs in the 19th century. They had to have their own steps of progression. And if they were only *a bit* better, they couldnât stop the entire world if they started attacking and word spread. Itâs only in the late 20th, early 21st century that things like destroying the rest of the world with Wakandan weaponry was likely actually feasible. Though honestly? I donât think that shield could withstand a nuke. I just donât see it. If Erikâs plan went through, he may have doomed Wakanda's capital city to being utterly annihilated because too many countries do have the ultimate kill button, and there are some who would not hesitate to use it.
It also could be cultural. Wakanda didnât go conquering their neighbors left and right. They were happy with five tribes and it seemed to remain five tribes. That speaks of something deeply cultural, deep within the roots of how theyâre raised and taught. Erik came from an entirely different culture with a violent childhood and background, and because they were in the 21st century, other Wakandans could *learn* of the rest of the world, and get new ideas - and get the same anger that stirs war and revolutions, and ultimately can affect a countryâs culture.
So perhaps before the 21st century, limited power with the king wasnât needed simply due to their isolation. Now, though that they are much more connected with the world, maybe they need something more like Botswana or Nigeria, only tied in with a monarchy (according to wiki -- Elsewhere, in Botswana, the kgosis (or chieftains) of the various tribes are constitutionally empowered to serve as advisors within the national legislature as members of the Ntlo ya Dikgosi. Meanwhile, in Nigeria, the various traditional polities that currently exist are politically defined by way of the ceding of definite authority from the provincial governments, which in turn receive their powers to do so from a series of chieftaincy laws that have been legislatively created.)
So basically what Iâm trying to say is, while Iâm personally super gung ho about representative democracies and individual liberties, thatâs not necessarily the culture of Wakanda and it may not fit for them. But *what* the culture of Wakanda evolves into, being more open to the rest of the world -- and thus, the rest of the worldâs ideas and cultures, remains to be seen. They may find that they do need to reform their political structure after the civil war we saw in the first film, though, and perhaps they do so.

Once Royal Wolf - Chapter 1: The Perils of Mishandling Superheated Flour
Story Summary: Vesemir had been alive for a long time, he purposefully tried to forget his past. His life before being picked up by Barmin when he was 8 years old and his easy-going and promiscuous ways after start on The Path were times he tried to bury for various reasons.
With the recent changes in Kaer Morhen brought about by Geralt becoming Warlord of the North, he had been focusing on the present and the improvement of the Witchers within the Keep.
With the upcoming Progress to review the Wolf lands and building diplomatic ties having brought up the uncomfortable topic of Rivia. A place he had not been to for centuries.
He hadnât counted on Ciri digging into his hesitancy and accidentally pulling someone from the past and into Kaer Morhen. Vesemir now has no choice but to face his past and deal with the person he has longed to see for so long.
Chapter Summary: There are downsides to not handling flour correctly
Notes: This story was inspired by my lovely Beta and co-author Randi and I chatting about Vesemir's past and about the things he got up to when he was younger.

Randi: so even though he slept around in his youth and couldn't have gotten women pregnant everyone who kind of looks like him gets accused of being his because his brother had mistresses and bastard children
Me: It would be even better if they were identical with the only difference being a slight difference in eye colour
Randi: In my head the twins were identical
It sort of snowballed from there.
30/08/21: I finally decided to post this story on here. I have been meaning to but haven't gotten around to it until now.

Today wasn't going well for Vesemir. He had a low-grade headache for the better part of the day that was very quickly turning into a migraine. It was originally caused by a lack of sleep and a series of strange dreams that didnât quite feel like dreams.
He couldnât fully remember them once he had woken. Remembering only bits and pieces instead.
Every time he closed his eyes he would see the inside of an expensive carriage. He decided to give up at that point. He wasnât getting back to sleep. The migraine had gotten worse as the day progressed, small things that usually wouldnât bother him were irritating him more than usual.
A young pup who had been struggling with the same flaw in his sword forms despite constant correction and hard work. The loud noises of his fellow Witchers as they went about their own training.
The Cranes had started a section on bomb-making with their chicks which resulted in somewhat frequent explosions that felt like they were rattling his skull.
The hustle and bustle of the various servants and inhabitants of Kaer Morhen as they prepared the Keep for the start of the Progress set to begin in a few weeks once the passes and The Killer had fully thawed out. All added to the relentless pounding in his head.
His back and knees were aching due to the lingering cold of the early Spring weather.
He sat down in the office above the Kitchen, resting his tired body and began to work on the mound of paperwork that went with ensuring newly medallion owning Witchers would have what they needed for their first years on the Path and reorganizing pack groups to include rookie Witchers among the Veterans.
Just as he had started to really make a dent, and his headache had started to go away, the rest of the council appeared at his door, bringing their own issues and needs. They still needed to work out who was going with Geralt, Ciri, Eskel, Jaskier and Yennefer on the Progress.
In no time, he was entrenched in discussing and mediating between the various parties and his headache was back with a vengeance. Jan needed input on the number of staff and the Witchers to remain in Kaer Morhen so he could meet the needs of those that remained while everyone was on the Path with the Progress.
At the same time, the same information would be needed to calculate the supplies needed for the Progress.
Livi needed to know how much coin would be needed for each person as well as who exactly would be staying and who would be going so no one would run out of coin and the staff would be where they were most needed.
In addition, she needed to know how often and where the Progress would stop so she could make plans to coordinate with sympathetic Lords and Ladies to ensure the Progress would be supplied as well as giving hosts warning as to when they could expect the Progress to enter their lands.
This would ensure the Hosts were at their best to meet their current and future leaders. Mouse also needed this information so she could place her spies and gather intelligence of the state of the Wolf Lands and the Kingdoms beyond.
Jaskier and Yennefer were trying to convince Geralt that stops outside the Wolf Lands would be equally important to Ciriâs future leadership and diplomatic efforts.
âShe needs to be seen, Geralt. Not only as your Heir but a future leader of her people.â Yennefer insisted. Geralt glared at her, not willing to budge, not caring that he was being stubborn. He wasn't going to put his daughter in danger.
âTaking her outside our lands puts her at risk and potentially exposes her to the ongoing tensions and threats in the South. Nilfgaard is pushing towards Sodden and threatening to invade the North.â Geralt snapped.
âItâs bad enough I agreed to this endless nightmare of parties and diplomacy within our own lands; as you have repeatedly insisted it will help us get a better grip on the state of the people and their needs.
In addition, it will help unify the various countries and peoples but we donât need to be going to other sovereign countries. That is just asking for troubleâ
âYou already agreed to Aedirn, Wolfâ Eskel stated before Yennefer could say anything else.
âThat was out of necessity. The only way to keep somewhat peaceful relations with Demavend,â Geralt glanced at Yen and Jaskier.
âAs everyone has pointed out, has been to make a diplomatic visit with myself and Ciri present in his capital. I donât have to like it, but I can tolerate it. However, I draw the line at Aedern.â
âBut if we visit the capital of Aedern and donât donât go visit Lyria and Rivia, it will be a slap in the face for Queen Maev who has always been supportive of Witchers,â Jaskier added, staring at his husband with a raised eyebrow.
Vesemirâs headache was approaching full-on migraine territory. He paled slightly when Jaskier mentioned Rivia, not enough to be immediately noticeable.
Feeling his heart rate pick up, he thought for sure the other Witchers in the room could hear and scent his distress but so far it had gone unnoticed save for the very observant silent shadow of Ciri.
He smiled wanly at Ciri, hoping it would distract her from his distress.
Vesemir wasnât⌠looking forward to visiting Rivia. It had been a long time since he had stepped foot in those lands. He left for good reason and tried to leave the past behind him.
The Progress would be leaving in a few weeks and he wasnât sure if he was ready for that, let alone a trip to the place of his birth.
If improving relations between their neighbour's and aid abroad for Witchers was the benefit and mission of this trip then he wouldnât stop it.
However, it was something he was hoping to avoid himself as he hadnât been home in 300 years.
âVesemir whatâs the matter?â Ciri asked. She had indeed noticed how distracted Vesemir had become since he had heard they would be stopped in Rivia for several days.
The others paused in their debate when they heard Ciriâs question. Now aware of Vesemirâs distress, Jaskier, Yen and Eskel became equally concerned.
Vesemir was never this distracted during council meetings and had been fine until this point as far as they could tell.
âHmm⌠ah, just concerned as Rivia is very close to Sodden and the trouble with Nilfgaard potentially preparing to invade is all,â Vesemir replied, trying to keep the nervousness out of his voice and scent.
He knew there was a very high chance they wouldnât believe him. It was a valid concern but not the reason he was actually nervous.
He tried not to wince when he saw the looks the rest of the council were giving him.
âVesemir, the Mahakam Mountains are to the west and the Desert to the South of Rivia. Poor conditions for the troops of Nilfgaard to march through and cause problems for us. Now, what are you actually worried about?â Eskel questioned, staring at his mentor. It was a very poor lie and the man clearly knew it.
Vesemir sighed, he looked like he was about to say something when there was a loud explosion from below, the force was enough to make the floor shake.
Vesemir grabbed his wine goblet and inkpot before wine and ink could end up on his paperwork, that was a mess he didnât want to have to clean up.
âWhat the hell? The Cranes know better than to practice inside or near the Keep itself!â Vesemir snapped, getting up, using the explosion as a distraction from the inquiry he was suddenly facing.
âIâm going to have words with Einri and Byrtel.â He marched towards the door, having to back away when the door suddenly opened.
Letho stalked into the room dragging the completely flour-covered Crane Trainees Konrad and Rafal followed by a somewhat messier than usual Julita.
The three Witchers were coated from head to toe in flour. Lethoâs scowl showed he was clearly not pleased with the two boys. Julita looked like she wanted to strangle Konrad and Rafal as well but was also struggling to hold back laughter at the same time.
Seeing the scowl on not only Lethoâs face but Vesemirâs as well, the boys immediately tried to speak in their defence, only succeeding in talking over each other.
âWe didnât mean for it to go off in the kitchen. Please donât punish usâ Rafal pleaded.
âWe meant to take it outside. I donât understand why it went off in the kitchen,â Konrad added at the same time.
âShut upâ Letho growled glaring down at the two trainees. The boys' mouths quickly snapped closed. He had just stepped foot into the kitchen on his way to the hot springs to get a quick bite to eat and to see how Julitaâs newest creation was coming along.
He had wanted to see if she had figured out the solution yet when Konrad and Rafal started to drag the very clearly overfilled bag of flour from the pantry and across the kitchen.
They obviously werenât going as quickly as they would have liked. Julita had been on the way to the door to greet him when the bag of flour exploded from the friction.
Lethoâs quick reflexes were the only reason he managed to get between Julita and the fireball caused by the superheated flour.
âWhat the hell happened?â Jan demanded, staring at the flour-covered trainees. They were burned in a few places and appeared to be bleeding a little from where their skin had cracked open from the heat of the explosion.
Letho was also a little singed but Julita, thankfully, looked perfectly fine though clearly very amused by how scared the two trainees were of her Uncle.
âThese two idiots were dragging an overfilled sack of flour through the kitchen and it blew up. The flour somehow caught on fire. You're very lucky no one else was injured given the size of the fireball,â Letho growled in answer for the boys, now cowering not only from Lethoâs anger but a very stern Jan as well.
Every Witcher, fully trained or not, knew to never mess with the human staff whether directly or indirectly. Just then, two older Cranes burst through the open door of Vesemirâs now very crowded office.
âIs everyone alright?â They immediately queried.
âWe heard the explosion near the kitchens and just wanted to make sure everyone was unharmed.
âAh, Einri, Byrtel so nice you could join us,â Letho growled when the two Cranes appeared. They looked a little concerned when they saw the state of the two boys and paled slightly at Lethoâs words. Bad things happened when Letho was pissed.
âWhat on earth were you two doing, overfilling and dragging 50lbs of flour across the kitchen?â Byrtel questioned. He and Einri had told the boys to fill two five-pound containers they had been given with flour. Using what would commonly be on hand, they had to find a way to create bombs just using flour, cloth and string soaked in oil as these were items they would often have on the Path.
âThis, boys, is why we told you to be careful in the kitchen and exactly why you shouldnât overfill the bags of flour. The friction from the bag being dragged across the stone floor and it being pressurized from being overfilled caused it to explode.
The force of the explosion was likely the cause of the fireball. Weâve talked about the importance of keeping substances under pressure from exploding.
Next time pick the bag up,â Byrtel explained, not once taking his eyes off Letho who looked like he was contemplating strangling not only him but any Crane who stepped across his path.
While it was true Letho had mellowed out a little since he had rescued Julita he was still dangerous. Every Witcher and Human in Kaer Morhen knew Letho was very protective of his niece.
Anyone who hurt Julita had to face Letho and if they did hurt her they knew what was going to happen to them once Letho found out.
With his pounding migraine and the inquisition he was surely going to face from the Council for his previous distress prior, Vesemir decided to use this argument as a distraction and beat a hasty retreat from the room.
Now would be the perfect time to head to his quarters, make the room as dark as possible and lay down to wait for his migraine to go away.
He might even be able to catch up on the sleep he had missed the night before. Surely his anxiety around visiting Rivia was an overreaction to not getting enough sleep.
300 years was a long time and nothing was the same as it once was. Right?

I guess now that I featured The Kids in something I can elaborate on them and everything related slightly without seeming completely insane. BIG HEADCANON BLATHER TIME: Raven and Ryss had 2 kids, both boys.Â
Ryss wasnât a terribly good mother. She loved her kids but was a little panicked about them at all times, and didnât really like the distraction they were. Specula was a good mother and did the majority of keeping them out of trouble.Â
They were also psychic as fuck, but that didnât show up until they were hitting puberty. Iâm sure that was an entire Time. Â
Ryss literally didnât think she could get pregnant by Raven. She based this off of both what sheâd been taught by Hiltz (humans=/=Zoidians) and the fact that Fiona had never been pregnant despite sleeping with Van for years*. So, once Ryss figured out she was pregnant**, telling Raven was a bit of an event because Raven was under the impression that such a thing wasnât possible. He also had little interest in being a parent. Ryss also had no idea what pregnancy even entailed for a Zoidian, and neither did Fiona. Again, all she knew was what sheâd learned from Hiltz, and it wasnât as if he went out of his way to teach her the finer points of anything. (Knowledge is power after all, and he wanted wanted to hold as much power over her as possible. What she didnât know to begin with, she couldnât know was being withheld. All she knew from Hiltz on the topic was Zoidian pregnancies are of a greater duration than human pregnancies - mainly because heâd irritably snapped about how âthe verminâ reproduce faster.) Ravenâs main reluctance about parenting had to do with... you know, his massive unresolved parental trauma. Which after some extreme stress he and Ryss managed to work through, largely because they had a lot in common in this department. Afterwards Raven warmed up to the idea of being a father, and was... well, Okay.jpg at it. Letâs just say he had Shadow helping Specula with the kids a lot. ...the kids were raised by Organoids. SO.
An attempt was made to keep track of Ryss and her offspring, especially after Ravenâs death and she began to make herself scarce. But nobody expected the kids to be psychic af, and they quickly sussed out that something was up and followed their momâs lead, making themselves and their families impossible to find. ....
The Guardian Force pretty quickly lost tabs on them, but did know what to âlook forâ, so to speak.Â
However, this attempt was never linked up with the information the Empire had on Ryss, mainly because too much time had passed and no one knew to bridge the info.
Anyways. All three Zoidians were aware there were differences between themselves and humans, Hiltz more than most. Hiltz was the only one of them that had an adult level of knowledge from Zoidian times. Fiona and Ryss were literal children and were only ever, at best, taught the very basics about things. Part and parcel of subscribing wholesale to the weâre-the-best groupâs newsletter, Hiltz also a keen interest in biology/related, obviously interested in scholars of that groupâs discussion on what amounted to Zoidian eugenics. âweâre the best, and hereâs why.â Hiltz didnât even remotely consider that humans and Zoidians could hybridize, nor was he interested in finding out. (though he had well-established to Prozen and the Imperial scientists his âownershipâ of Ryss and the fact she was not to be messed with, Iâm sure he had to mindfuck and/or sic Ambient on a swath of folks to get them to stop bothering him about jizzing in a cup.)***
Jokeâs on him because he fathered *at least* these three:Â

because he, Hiltz, the weird guy, was hot, amazing in bed, and quite DTF.  scholar: ...  Hiltz: (ă) scholar: ... Unlike with Ryssâs kids, who at least had a slight understanding they were different and some guidance on the situation, any and all of Hiltzâs offspring HAD NO IDEA WHAT WAS GOING ON. And not that any of the fertility restrictions were enacted at this point in time (thereâs wars, you live in the wild west, please have kids), but the addition of Zoidian into the mix fucks the inbuilt population-control-genetic-engineering-bullshit straight up, which resulted later in a lot of confusing surprises for people annnnnd is part of why miscarriages became common later down the line.Â
Nobody expected the spanish inquisition weird side-species fuckery. Nobody even knows to look! By NC0 times thereâs just starting to be coherent, unified inquiry into the various vanilla-human mutations running around.
WHOOPS THO: Backdraft & Co have been at this shit for a while and already know a lot about this. Because they have a hard-on for the Empire and a lot of OG Backdraft are basically really rich, bitter offspring from Imperial families who think theyâre better in just about every way. Including genetically. When Backdraft became predominantly a moneymaking, black-market, illegal-battling underground enterprise, a rift began and never stopped growing. Backdraft has a strong preference for recruiting folks of Guylos descent (hi, Bit), but in recent memory had stopped turning people away for not being so. Because money. It did kinda... go in peoplesâ file though. In the game of historical telephone, Ryss (and Ravenâs) bloodline were more or less demoted to the same: âfrom Guylos.â Alteil was in range of figuring a few important things out. Unfortunately, HE DED. His successor with this information is Layon. Surely nothing can go wrong there. ANYWAYS. A massive and valid concern Ryss had was what would happen with hybrid offspring, since to her knowledge her kid would be the first. Hiltzâs were already adults, they were fine. They were better than fine, they just needed a lot more water and salt than everyone else. So, as we all know, Hiltz uh, actually succeeded in removing a sizable chunk of the human population on Zi. Once everyone had scraped semi-functional society back together, the powers that-were-to-be basically prioritized secure settlements and making everyone feel safe so... you know, theyâd have kids. Important for the whole rebuilding society thing.  The Zoidian offspring became slightly more statistically relevant during this time, because them and potentially even their kids had all been scared shitless and fled into the hills from the Death Stinger bullshit long before anyone else had. Once there they were good at Not Dying In General, because they had a variety of inexplicable abilities and were just WELL IâM A FREAK BUT IâM ALIVE SO, YOU KNOW, WEâRE COOL.Â
Greater than zero chance that someone started a cult. Very, very obviously: these folks knew to keep to themselves. Though the original offspring and their mother had NO idea what was going on, over time any kids at least had fair warning, and knew to keep oddity to themselves. When the most blatant expressions of things were bred out, only the subtle but strongly expressed items remained, discussion of familial strangeness subsided. Then youâre left with people like Brad who can basically see in the dark, but thinks everyone can see in the dark, itâs no big deal right?  RELATED, BUT NOT: This is technically a spoiler, but not really, because Iâm not sure this actually âplays into the plotâ so much as it is just âa fact of the plotâ annnnnd I sort of want/need to explain this a little because itâs related to all of this. In this hc, the Zoid Eve is a metaphorical hyper-simplification of âresources.â
Back in Zoidian times, some scholars - namely those aligned with the group(s) Hiltz was eventually born into - theorized that the Zoid Eveâs power was not an infinite resource as many believed, but actually an incredibly finite one. Not in the sense of it being used up, but the sense of âthere are only â100Ⲡof these, there will only ever be â100Ⲡof these, we cannot add to or take away from thisâ (sidenote: I subscribe to the idea that the Zoid Eve was some kind of supernaturally-occurring power source that the Zoidians shaped into what everyone now calls the Zoid Eve. They did this so long ago that its origins became unclear; beliefs from various groups ran the gamut from âLITERALLY GODâ to âit was built by usâ)  The power of it gave life and longevity not only to all Zoids but them too. And it seemed that the more individuals there were, the smaller the âslice of the pieâ they received. They began to project apocalyptic futures in which the âslicesâ were so small that death ran rampant, and Big War would be inevitable. Obviously, nobody wanted this. But unfortunately the group who theorized this also started a huge, lengthy campaign to reduce the population, which - after many years, a lot of societal sabotage and and many smaller conflicts between groups - eventually culminated in ongoing, wholesale slaughter, which led to the big Zoidian-apocalypse nonsense that weâre all familiar with. Cool story bro, right? Well, yâsee, those ancient scholars werenât wrong, though. To an extent thatâs actually what led to the hyper-concentration of strength in the DSaurer/DScorpion battle, and why Zero and One are functionally god-tier Organoids. But what this means in modern times, is that the remaining Zoidians - and to a proportionately-relevant extent, the hybrid offspring - are the only remaining folks (besides the Organoids and Zoids) benefiting from the pie anymore. Ryss is the last Zoidian; sheâs basically non-aging at this point.Â
First-gen hybrids? Aging at a complete snailâs pace. Second gen? Still having a very strange time. So on and so forth... Can they die? Absolutely, but itâs pretty hard to kill them. Basically only complete destruction of vital parts works. Does this also apply to Organoids and Zoids? Absolutely. âthen whyâs Fiona deadâ Because the double-bond with Zeke seriously fucked her up. Van dragged her down, hard. âbut-â Zeke couldâve pulled away from her at any time and she wouldâve lived. Been a nutcase probably, but lived. She suspected it, Zeke was outright in denial; she never called him on it because she cared about him too much and didnât want him blaming himself for whatever happened. This is what Ryss suspected/understood as well, and likewise didnât want to break Zeke. âwait, what about zeke?â HMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMMM IN CLOSING: I donât have names for any of the offspring discussed here, but I have thought about the appearances/other stuff. Obviously. Iâve never specified how many original offspring(s) were running around. But it couldnât have been too many. So anyone in NC0 times related to either Ryss or Hiltz can trace back to ^^^the folks pictured above, most likely. I actually have no idea how to properly calculate the amount of population vs how much impact a handful of reproducing individuals would have over x generations. So please excuse vagueness there, as Iâm both open to adjusting that number when/if it becomes feasible to do so, and also donât think itâs terribly necessary to have this information nailed down because letâs be real nobody cares and thatâs a lot of work. Also as Iâve mentioned before, thereâs several serious confounding factors here: -these people can LIVE A LONG TIME. The original hybrids and their kids ARE POTENTIALLY STILL ALIVE. They mature relatively rapidly, but then coast into a very slow aging process. That means that - especially the males - could still technically be producing offspring. -that makes my head hurt and makes figuring out lineages stupid nightmare mode. so donât expect me to actually do that because Iâm not sure how to. The main Facts(tm) you need are: Sara is 4th gen. Vega is 5th gen x2. Brad is 5th gen. Stoller is 7th gen.
thatâs the important part, okay. (*âs from earlier: ) *tl;dr the bizarre situation theyâd inadvertently created with Zeke wreaked havoc on Fionaâs ability to reproduce. Conversely, Raven and Ryss *almost* had a âproperâ setup, so Ryss was fine. Nobody knew this. **Ryss figured this out with Fionaâs help - and who did they both go to, to ask in confidence?
Yep. âisnât he-â YEP. ***The Empire knows next to nothing about Hiltz. The Republic, however has AN OBSCENE AMOUNT of information about him. Difficulty level? The data was both classified, and never really tied back to him. Because Hiltz murdered the scholar and burned down his house/lab, the connecting information was all lost. The scholar had moved the material to his house in secret, due to fears of an Imperial spy in their research facility - he was telling Hiltz the truth. Â The most that the Empire ever learned at that time was that the Republic had âcapturedâ a Zoidian (Hiltz), and that was about it. This drove the fervor which led to them grabbing at the Republicâs continued excavations - eg what happened with Shadow, and presumably them attacking (and IMO, overpowering) the Republic group thatâd also seized Ryss. Â Before Hiltz became involved, Imperial scientists gleaned a lot about Ryss, but as Iâve mentioned before, she wasnât treated anywhere nearly as poorly as Hiltz had been. She also had Specula, which helped a lot. Â So, the Empire knew nothing of Hiltz, but a lot about Ryss. Â Thanks to Alteil and his predecessorâs longstanding obsession with the Imperial military, Backdraft has almost all of the Imperial militaryâs data from the past few centuries. Â Ergo...
