Just thinking about how storytellers are all linked together in a chain of ingesting the stories, themes, metaphors, concepts, ideas, subjects, etc of beloved predecessors and peers and finding what touches you, inspires you, moves you, what you also want to communicate and then- making something of your own, something that will touch someone next, change them a little (or a lot) in a beautiful way and they’ll make something too, maybe with a little bit of you in it.

I have always seen this strange passive dismissal towards art. Not art in general...art as in painting, drawing etc. I have seen the singing skills of one of my cousins being greatly lauded while my painting skills were met with just a half-hearted exclamation. Anything beyond performative art is seen as a secondary artform. There are words like singers, dancers and musicians...but the word artist is shared by all. The only exclusive words we get are painter and sculptor...which covers only a part of the whole spectrum. By no means are performative arts any unworthy of the praise. But painting, sketching, drawing, doodling, sculpting etc, deserve much more appreciation...and definitely an umbrella term which is exclusive.

Do you have any idea how poets, philosophers, painters, scientists, musicians, dancers, singers, mystics escaped this life and all its troubles, all its miseries, all its pains, all its anguishes? They found and discovered something larger than themselves, something that required them to jump out of their own skins, something that triggered an unquenchable thirst in them, something that made them spend hours utterly devoted, oblivious of everything else. Now the best part is this - even while they were engrossed in this out of the body and out of the world experience, the final outcome of this entire process is so revolutionary that it actually changed and altered the course of human history. Just imagine how empty our lives would be without the poetry of east & west, without the philosophy of both ancient and modern, without the paintings of Michaelangelo, without the discoveries of our scientists, without the symphonies of Beethoven etc etc etc. The giants who devoted their lives to a cause, they found something greater than themselves, something larger than their own trivialities. Their art became their greatest gifts to humanity - we understood life a bit more closely and life became a bit more easier by their selfless contributions and dedications. How to Make Your Own Author Being

What is an Author Being?

You can create an author being or you can ask me to create it for you. If you are joining my patreon at the Paracosm Spring tier, then you can get an author being design for yourself as a reward. For those who want to create their own, here’s a step-by-step guide to create one that is “canon”.

Here's now to turn yourself into an Author Being

Creative Talent Put this in the "Type" place on the template

Look at what makes you creative--what is that talent?  

Writers and Artists are most common, but they aren't the only types. Just cause it's called an "Author" Being doesn't mean it's only a writer. However it HAS to be a creative talent. You can't claim a sport as your talent and expect to be an AB.

You don't have to have a story (a paracosm), though it is more common.

Some Examples: Writer, Artist, Singer, Dancer, Musician, Crafter, Actor, Cook, translator/reteller

Caveat: You can still BE in the Imaginary World with no creative talent. Realworlders with no creative talents are considered personas. Go to the “What’s your alias” section for more.

2. What’s your author power? Put this in the "Specialty" place on the template

Now determine how your talent manifests. Author Beings have the ability to bend reality in a god-like way.

Of course there are universal powers:

altering yourself

creating an alias to hide as

traveling through portals

And common ones:

creating domains and characters

altering character

altering worlds

altering plots/timelines

But determine how your talent creates a theme for powers. A painter can brush landscapes or objects into life, a writer can speak something into existence, but perhaps an actor can become any persona they want just by acting it out?

What Domain do you travel to? Put this in the "Domains" place in the template

First, determine what type of domain you’re in. Original or another creator’s?

Original Domain/Paracosm: your own world and characters.

Amateur or smaller creator’s world: A story and world with one or a small group of creators. Think of a webcomic, self-published book, or online roleplay.

Famous Creator’s world: A huge franchise with a studio or multiple creators. Shows, movies, books, video games, etc. Basically where fandom gets its food.

4. What Alias do you go by? Or what role do you play? Put this in the "Alias" place in the template

A FURTHER DIVE INTO CREATING ALIASES IS HERE.

Bad characters will want to use you and your reality bending powers to take control of their world, but also if they learn of other worlds, they’d want to take over them too (or worse). So to combat this, an Author uses an alias. Think of the alias as the mild-mannered disguise for the Author Being’s alter ego. You take on a role to do your work. You don’t have to stick to just one! Author Beings travel between worlds and the alias can change depending on the world.

Other Creator’s World: If you’re in another creator’s world, especially a famous one, creating a fan character is necessary. There are many ways to go about this and it depends on the domain and the author being’s tastes. Just keep in mind, this is YOU taking on a ROLE. It is not a totally separate from you character without your personality, you are ACTING.

Some questions to think about: 

How does your backstory fit into the plot without breaking it?

Are you an NPC? Or do you interact with the main cast?

If you interact with main characters, how is your alias involved?

Does your alias change canon? Does your alias exist in an AU only?

Does your alias belong to one “episode”? Or do they stay or an arc?

You don’t have to create a whole story behind your fan alias, unless you want to. If you already have a story, it’s pretty easy to establish where the alias ends and the author begins.

Original Worlds: Most authors needn’t worry about an alias while in their own worlds, but it can be fun. You have total control over your world while in it, so you can use a high-profile alias or a low-profile one, or none at all!

You can also use a self-insert in another world too!

For example, Bex will lay undercover as an NPC until something happens and she has to act, then out comes the Author Being! If anyone questions weird behavior she uses pieces of her own backstory to make her presence make sense.

5. What is your Author Being form?

You can be anything you want when you're all powered up! This form is also what represents you the most. Human? Animal? Both? Robot? Other?

Do you have an emotional connection to a specific animal? Or do you prefer being human? Or want to be a robot? (pay close attention to disassociation—it could be an indicator that you chose something that doesn’t fit you)

Then find relationships between your talents, powers, and personality. Choose features that match.

Bex’s notable features:

Horse—she is part horse in the back. Producing a semi-rigid back for running. I was a HUGE horse-girl, and still am

Dog/Big cat—aside from the jaguar, Bex is a mix of dog and cat in various parts. Dog nose for smelling the looks, cheetah/jaguar legs for power and speed, Dog/Jaguar fur for the texture and pattern. (But she doesn’t actually shed!)

Wings—She has wings because I always fly in my dreams, and I love the adventure and acrobatics. Plus I always liked being up high as a kid. • Human eyes—I love my eye color and the ability to see colors. Bex’s eyes are the same in any form, but the lining is usually different from my human form.

Crests/embedded gem—the crests on her forehead and chest are related to my story, so have symbolic significance, as does the gem in the tail. But they all come from things I’d do as a kid to make her a magical girl—the gems embedded in a character’s body are a call back.

Five-digits—Bex has thumbs even if it would be impractical for an animal. I’m an artist and darn it I’m still gonna draw in any form.

6. What’s your author weapon?

Author weapons are specific to the type of Author Being they are. There is a dormant form and an awakened form. 

In dormant form they take on an appearance of a tool or as a piece of jewelry. The weapon stays in dormant form if they are in their alias form, unless the author is actively using it. 

The awakened form is an actual weapon. It is extremely personal to the author who uses it. It can be any weapon

Example:  Bex: Bex has a shapeshifting rapier/sidesword Ell: Ell has a  whip

7. Extras Transportation: Your author being doesn’t have to walk everywhere. Do they have a form of transportation? A trusty steed or cool vehicle? It can be world specific too—maybe they have a motorcycle for modern worlds, and a horse for premodern. 

Items: Just like a roleplay character, they might have many tools that help them. Bags of holding are very common in fantasy worlds, and author beings love them! Fill them up! 

Party/character companions: Do they have a pet or are they alone all the time? Do they change friend groups or have a dedicated party to adventure with?

tired of that post that’s like ‘people who were fic writers before they were pro authors all suck’ and using like cassandra claire as an example. sure, some authors who started writing fanfic now make shitty derivative wish fulfillment books with bad adjectives. but that’s such a misunderstanding of what fanfiction is.

fanfic is not an inherently subversive genre, and i personally hate people who’s only queer lit is fanfic. they’re missing like everything important about the queer experience. but fanfic is also not meant to be a societal medicine, a cure-all for queer issues.

fanfic is a space for passionate people to express their love for a piece of art.

just like fan artists don’t make bad artists, fanfic writers don’t make bad writers. it isn’t causative.

however, lots of people in fandom are new to their mediums, or young, or not super high effort. so fandom spaces are flooded with the content of amateurs- people who create out of love.

lots of those people are bad at it. not because liking things enough to write about them makes you bad at art, not because wanting gay people to kiss makes you bad at art. but bc the point of these works is singular: to create for a fandom a thing that is wholly yours, drawn from your love of that fandom.

i go to art school (fake gamer, i know) and all of the most talented artists, especially the illustrators, had fandoms that they drew for when they were young. the fan space allowed them a community to create for, people to encourage those early stages of artistic development.

this is what lots of (i’d bargain most) fanfic is. it’s the beginning of an artistic process. it’s fresh, it’s new, it’s missing constructive feedback and editing and perspective. just like the early works of a million different singers, songwriters, painters, writers, actors, and dancers before them, these artists are laying the groundwork for their future endeavors. and they’re doing it out of love. i think that’s beautiful.

furthermore, lots of fanfic is actually well written. those posts that say ‘x is such a raw line you’d think it’s from shakespeare but it’s actually from a stuckky incest fic’ or whatever. those posts are a perfect example of the actual writing ability of some fic authors. i’ve read fics that do innovative things with form, rhythm, plot structure, etc. i’ve read fics that discuss in more plain-clothes fashion topics that are hard to find in most fiction. sure, maybe i do really like it when a character is confrontational in a way no real person is, but that unrealistic behavior doesn’t mark a bad author— fiction doesn’t have to feel like it’s real, it has to feel congruent with its own internal logic. some fic authors understand this better that some ‘real authors’. many don’t.

finally, there are some authors that i’m pretty sure were fic authors before they got published (no evidence, just conjecture) who make incredible work. nora sakavic, lee mandelo, c.s. pacat. their work is all notably fic-y, from some writing conventions to plot points to obvious references to other works. none of this devalues their books, which each have their own merits. the all for the game trilogy by nora sakavic is an awesome fast paced action series centered around stupid mafia drama and a fictional sport (which would be way more fun to play than fucking quidditch btw) and also deeply explores consent, trauma, and what it means to be someone’s family. summer sons by lee mandelo is a beautiful languid southern gothic with some innovative ideas about ghosts and some really intense haunting scenes. c.s. pacat’s captive prince trilogy is undeniably fic-y with a lot of weird plots and sub plots and sub sub plots, alienating dialogue, and an obsession with sexual trauma. and the captive prince trilogy is also the most comprehensive look i’ve ever gotten at battle strategy. i love how the relationship between afflictors and those afflicting harm was discussed- there’s no right way to understand the atrocities discussed in the text, but the characters are people, so they keep living, and they make bad decisions and they make good ones. i’d recommend all of these books.

all this to say that fanfic has its place. there’s nothing to be achieved by acting like it’s some angelic force, but likewise bashing on it needlessly does no one any good. and to close: i got into economic theory because of my sisters ex-boyfriend who had a copy of das capital. i got into queer theory because a fic writer i like mentioned the faggots and their friends.

I've been LOOKING for something like this!! what kind of occupations were you hoping to see?

All kinds are welcome, although personally, I tend to lean towards famous/artsy-type muses when given backdrops as glamorous as New York. So anyone in the broadway scene (actors, crew, writers, choreographers, etc.), musicians, singer songwriters, film and television stars, artists (painters, sculptors, graphic designers, animators, drawerers/illustrators, etc.), art curators, dancers, directors, producers, scriptwriters, makeup artists, and all that jazz would be cool to see! New York is also known for their fashion, so fashion designers, buyers, boutique owners, photographers, and models are more options. Business types of all kinds (marketing, finance, ceos, cfos, sales reps, pharmaceuticals, etc.) The classics of bartenders, baristas, teachers, bakers, waiters and servers, dealers, nurses, doctors, firefighters, and college students would be welcome. And then just piggybacking off ideas from the locations page, club workers, comedians, singing waiters, daycare workers, movie theater employees, and radio and podcast hosts would be cool! Let me know if you need anymore ideas!

Pressure..pressure..pressure.. (in the professional sense)

I feel there is a lot of pressure on us since childhood. In our childhood, the pressure was to study and get good marks instead of wasting your time in playing, according to our parents. From nursery to 10th class the pressure is all about, "GETTING GOOD MARKS IN THE 10TH BOARDS." With just a break of 2 months called the summer holidays we are again pressurized to choose a stream and in 2 years, "GET GOOD MARKS IN 12TH BOARDS, IF IT'S CBSE OR IN INTER EXAMS, IF IT'S STATE SYLLABUS."

After inter obviously you are not getting any job in a good company so you have to have a degree (graduation) of a minimum of 3 years. You have to struggle with the pressure of college with it's internals, lab records, practicals, syllabus, research works, assignments and inbetween all this you even have to give campus placement exams and interviews after preparing yourself for it, your communication skills, your marks, your CV...etc and after you get your graduation certificate in hand, you try and in a lot of pressure of earning a good life, you get a job, get experience of the corporate world, get stressedevery moment, follow one routine, getting up early....etc.

After a few years you have to undergo a post graduation course with your job on the other side to develop in this competitive world and earn more in your job through promotion after your have your post graduation certificate is in your hands.

At the end, when your too aged to work, your pressure of all these years gets paid off when you have a big house, savings to spend on your needs and a hospital bed to die on because of the pressure.

On the other hand, if you choose any other path in life, like an artist (painter, actor writer, dancer, singer, designer...etc) you obviously have your own pressure there too, of getting successful, getting fame, name, money, recognition....etc etc.

I don’t know who needs to hear this but, I just realized something.

Sometimes is better to have quantity over quality.

As someone that calls themselves an artist, I just realized that my art doesn’t have to be perfect, it doesn’t have to follow every single rule out there. It’s okey to break them, and to make them my own. I usually value quality over quantity, because i’m a perfectionist. But, when it comes to drawing, painting, writing… Practice makes perfection.

Today I had to explain in class the following “Focus on progress, not perfection”. I used this image to describe it. Realizing just now, how connected it is to everything I tell other people when they are discouraged.

Progress is not going to be a straight line, you are going to have ups and downs. I personally believe that the more you go down the higher you will go up. Trying to be “perfect” can be an unhealthy way of making progress. Worrying about what you are doing wrong all the time will get in the way of the changes needed in our life for us to grow and learn new things.

In what I like to do I need to be practicing constantly in order to be better. It’s fine if I don’t make it the first three or five times, I will at some point and it’s totally fine to do it at my own pace. Quantity can equal practice/progress. Quality in this case, can be equal to perfection.

Don’t be so hard on yourself for not being exactly like your favorite painter, writer, singer, dancer, etc. YOU ARE NOT MEANT TO BE THEM. Each and every single one of us has its own way of doing things. Celebrate the little achievements you have in life, that will help you to stay motivated.

Don’t put imposible goals, keep them on a reachable standard for you. Don’t compare your progress to anyone else’s, case you only see the a tiny bit of how far they have come. Don’t give up!!! I believe in you ;)

do you think spencer would be more into a girl that its more like maths science intelligent or more artistic intelligent? i always see fics/blurbs/etc abt him dating some type of scientist but i think i never saw him dating a writer, painter, singer, etc

i think he'd be attracted to someone ambitious but i don't think he'd have a preference. he'd love getting to talk science with someone who gets it, but he'd also love talking science with someone while they use him for inspiration for songs/poetry/art

Classic is a professor at a college Toriel runs. Vanilla is the Mascot of Monsters and also works at a supermarket. W.D. is a scientist working for Asgore.

Cardinal works and somewhat owns an animal shelter. Captain is a Lawyer. Salamander is a scientist who works with W.D.

Navy is in the Royal Guard and police force. Syrup is a bee-keeper. Coral is a boat captain and a scientist (though, part-time.)

Clove and Cinnamon have an animal shelter. Cinnamon is also a part-time chef. Clary helps his sons around the house but he's retired, but also remains a consultant for science. They also own a bakery.

Chai and Ceylon help with the animal shelter but are also looking to run a farm/ranch. Caper is retired, like Clary, but helps with science and part-time boat driving.

Chive works at an animal shelter while Cassia is a restaurant owner. Coriander is also retired but helps with science.

Griffin is a Judge for Angels and is also an Executioner, however, on Earth, he works at a supermarket. Sentinel is a Savior Angel, however, on Earth, he works at a flower shop. Cobalt trains Executioners and Guardians, however, on Earth, he is a professor.

Conroy is a professor and science assistant. Rain is in the Royal Guard at the captain. Crane is a scientist and inventor.

Latin is a dance teacher and Hip Hop works with him at Latin's studio.

Tango is a popular dancer and singer while working with Latin as a dance teacher. Rhythm is a dance teacher.

Merengue is a dance teacher and DJ is a backup dancer and part-time dance teacher.

Caramel works part-time as a dance teacher while also owning a bakery. Glamour is a bartender.

Hound is a consultant for both the Royal Guard and mafia, he's also a private investigator. Ebony is a consultant and private investigator and part-time food critic. Sirius is an archeologist and scientist.

Dolce is a judge and a private investigator. Airen is a captain of a Royal Guard. Ares is a scientist.

Brass works with Syrup but also is a painter. Jet is a Royal Guard member but also an inventor. Orion is a scientist.

Sharp is a hitman in the mafia along with his brother, Button. Canasta is the head of the mafia.

Spade is a heavy hitter who doesn't hesitate to fight. Slick is a bodyguard and spy. Hex is a person who uses magic to get what he wants (such as turning people into animals, etc.)

Roscoe and Commander deal with the less messy jobs with spying, but Roscoe is also a hitman. Brawl personally trains the new recruits.

Bliss is the Guardian of Positivity and Dusk is the Guardian of Negativity. Comet and Umbra just help their brothers with it. On Earth, however, Umbra is an artist and Comet is a singer.

Lenovo is the Destroyer of AUs and Virus helps him sometimes. Virus is a professional hacker.

Tusche is the Protector of AUs and Acrylic helps him sometimes. Acrylic is an artist.

Murder and Cinder are just people who work under Dusk.

some authors i follow and like reading have moved their fics to a place where you have to pay to read them and i understand but a lot of it is because of feedback. i’ve been reading your fics since 2018 but i’ve never said anything or liked them, and i’m worried you’re going to do that too. i figured you don’t need me to say it because you have so many followers and because i’m not very good with words (as you can probably see here) so i’m sorry. i really like your fics though 😭😭

hey anon~ i can understand why you or any other reader invested in those stories would be surprised or shocked, or maybe even a little sad, but i think more than anything im hoping you can respect the authors decisions to make those choices. its not unheard of for a fanfic author to have a ko-fi (i have one), a patreon (MANY authors do) or even to stop writing fic during the time they are attempting to write a book (which, yes, people will have to pay for). so while i can understand why it might be shocking or hard to process because its a sudden change, ill just reiterate i hope you respect it. i know you say you understand their motives, which is reassuring. but for the brunt of this message i will tell you this -

it does not matter the number of people following a person, every artist, writer, painter, singer, dancer, glass-blower, carpenter, etc etc wants someone, anyone, to engage with their work. they are creating something from their heart and their mind, putting in the work even if they are not necessarily inspired, pouring their free time into something, and being told ‘you have x amount of followers you dont need me to say anything about it’, at least for me, is kind of hurtful. not only to me but to you, dear anon. youre assuming your voice doesnt matter - as a content creator, i literally dont care if i have 100 followers or 100k. every voice of a person who reads my work matters. if you tell me you love it, i want to hear it. if you tell me you hate it, i want to know why so i can improve and consider how to make the story better. if you felt no way about it, but just want to say thanks for sharing thats also great. i want to hear from you!

this is not something you mentioned, but i did think about it while typing out my response here. its different for me here than on ao3. i think of ao3 as literally just an archive. there is not necessarily a community surrounding the fandom. on tumblr, there community is here. ive made friends from being in this fandom. even if i dont post or even if i dont say anything, im checking this app at least a few times a day to see the gifs, check on my friends, see if any updates have been announced. there community here. and engaging with the things creators produce encourages community. i joined tumblr in 2017 and lord god the mindset around sharing a creators work was wildly different. everyone wanted to support each other - everyone was excited to read works. i know im behind on my reading list and i know im behind on reccing works, but the point is that, at some point, im going to share what i love. and ive seen so much less of that in recent years.

im not saying this problem is because of you, but it is because of a lot of readers assuming a blog has a lot of followers so they dont need the engagement. thats not the way to look at art. if youre an exo or bts fan, do you not buy their albums or listen to their songs because someone else will so i dont need to listen to it? thats what that sounds like. i should also say im not necessarily angry, but i am appreciative that youve read my works and enjoyed them - i just wish you would have said something sooner so we could have had a great time talking about things you and i both enjoy. a lot.
