I know we all love bookshopping but honestly, not buying books and focusing on finishing the ones you already own is a very nice experience, strongly recommend!

Appreciate the little things.
Not to ignorantly deny all of the big bad things in the world, but to survive them.

Mario and the Incredible Rescue is mostly a nothing burger in terms of characterization, but here are a couple of bits that I liked:
Tumblr media
He be pining hard. Also, my heart grows three sizes every time something confirms outright that Princess Peach is fantastic at her job as a ruler.
Tumblr media
The Yoshis are very doglike in this book (positive). There's a moment later on where Mario momentarily breaks away from the group with Yoshi, and when they return Luigi and Toad are killing time by playing with the rest of the pack. Just a big candy-colored mob of friendly puppy-dinos who will also devour sentient beings alive if they're too mean.
Tumblr media
Luigi's relationship with Toad in this book reminds me a lot of his interactions with the toads in the Luigi's Mansion series. I would not mind if Toad and Luigi developed this sort of dynamic in the movie canon somewhere down the line. Two more little moments:

Something About Jason Todd In The Future I Guess
Jason Todd, in the eyes of the world at large, is a mildly successful author who lives on his father’s trust fund. He is in the minority of his siblings to have a college degree, and he was missing for a significant period of time, presumed dead. He is 28 years old, and he spends his nights grappling from rooftops as part of a flock of colorfully dressed birds, striking fear into their lawless, beautiful city.
He is the Red Hood. He protects the parts of the city many glance over.
He is the only bird in this flock with fresh blood on its talons.
Two of his younger siblings are birds of prey who have learned to eat nuts and seeds. He is a songbird who has learned to hunt.
He does not do so carelessly.
It has taken him the better part of a decade, but he has learned the ways he is different to his siblings. To his father.
For them, killing would be easy.
For him, it is never easy.
He feels the blood of each body on his hands. He knows the story behind each one. This does not paralyze him, as it would his older brother, or deaden him, as it would his younger brothers.
Each person he kills has a life. Each bloody body tells a story.
He was one of those stories, once, after all.
But every person he saves has a life, too. And every story has to end sometime.
The Red Hood kills. It is a tool, one of many in his arsenal. Once, it might have been his tool of choice, but he knows better, now.
This flock knows better than anyone, after all, that there are worse things than death.

I'm also just thinking about how people's frustration with The Bear this season in general and not just with SydCarmy is so indicative of how little people understand about story writing.
I got my BA in fiction writing which doesn't make me the world's leading expert or anything but I know enough to know that The Bear is exceptionally well-written and most of the complaints about this season stem from not knowing anything about writing a story.
And on top of this, the same people who don't know anything about writing a story are used to consuming really bad stories because right now, we're in one of the worst eras of television and honestly, writing in general, ever.
Because right now there's no expectation or requirement for a show or book to be well-written before production or publication. There's no requirement for it to actually be good, or for it to even make any sense at the writing level. All that matters is that people will watch it or read it and since people can't tell the difference between good writing and bad writing and largely aren't watching or reading for that reason anyway, who cares?
It's just an endless cycle.
Audiences don't recognize nor want good writing > Producers and publishers don't require nor pursue good writing > Writers that ultimately become successful can't nor need to write well > And the cycle starts over.
And because people are so used to bad writing, and can’t tell the difference between good and bad writing, and don’t want good writing anyway, when a show like The Bear comes around, a show that doesn’t hold their hand and explain everything to them or doesn’t spoon-feed them exactly what they want, a show that isn’t going to sacrifice the narrative through-line just to cut to the romantic chase - people are not only confused but pissed.
And then the most frustrating part of all this is that people then come to the conclusion the writer’s are bad at writing.
It is so bleak to be an aspiring writer right now, I swear.

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
!!!! def the mars house by natasha pulley! it did meet my expectations and in a lot of ways vaulted over them, because the pre-release reviews were...... rough. thankfully i found a lot of the reasons for the bad reviews (not all of the reasons, but a lot of them) to be nonissues for me. i really liked that way pulley played with gender, the pluses and minuses of living in a non-gendered world. the mammoths thing was kind of silly but in a cute way. and gale really is the most compelling love interest of the year to me. gale themarshouse call me if it doesn't work out with january.

i try not to be such a cunt in my head when thinking about people with low functional literacy/reading comprehension because i know a good chunk of the many illiterate people in this country didn't have the opportunity to learn. but i can't just pretend my childhood wasn't filled with peers bragging about the fact that they never read.

On s'est déjà tout dit Et j'ai déjà tout vu Je l'ai déjà apprise, la leçon la plus dure J'suis tombé droit dans l'mur, une fois, deux fois
[We've already said everything and I've already seen it all. I've already learned it, the hardest lesson. I fell straight into the wall, once, twice.]
#bea art tag#T'Pring#T'Pring/Spock#Spock#SNW#star trek snw#snw#T'Pring fanart#s he deserves more.....she deserves MORE!!!!!#The nerve of this man to say 'you know me well' WHILE cheating#This show's Spock's trust issues and reluctance to fully commit himself to T'Pring don't read at all as him being torn between two differen#worlds or reluctant to show T'Pring the 'real' him because we never really see T'Pring being .... idk. Disdainful of his humanity?#The most I can remember is her saying 'It hardly seems like a Vulcan lives here.' when she's poking at his interior decorating#T'Pring is out here reading books doing research and telling him she appreciates his Humanity and wants to have dinner with him and spend#time together and Spock's over here like 'I can't bring myself to trust T'Pring. Christine! Angel!' like DUDE....you're ENGAGED#Of your own volition you're engaged!!#The second your fiancee says 'let's take a break from seeing each other to think about our relationship' you start having sex with another#woman?? Immediately??? I don't like this writing ... it just makes Spock seem like a sleaze who's making excuses to be unfaithful#BUT you know what?? That'd be fine if they didn't frame Christine/Spock as like...ok? I don't get that. M'Benga is like wink wink#ohhh you like each other huh~?? HUH indeed. HUH?? Dude - he has a fiancee???#Even putting morality aside wouldn't it just be more fun to have them be in a secret forbidden relationship or whatever?#Spock: -Singing about how he and Christine broke up or whatever- / Uhura: ....[doesn't he have a girlfriend?????]#<- I wish there was more continuity with this. Like - why is everyone on the ship fine with Spock & Christine being together#when they KNOW he has a fiancee? Is no one going to mention it?#Like there's definitely a compelling story here but the writers are never gonna find it...everyone's too busy being in a marvel movie#Spock being like oh I love Christine we really have something WHILE reassuring T'Pring at every turn that he loves her and wants to make#it work between them ooohhhh!!!! -steam comes out my ears- flames flames on...on the side of my face...#Him being upset and feeling betrayed by Christine leaving for a work opportunity....sit DOWN sir. Sit DOWN!!!#If they make T'Pring cheat on him with Stonn or whatever so they can have a contrived#'well we're both at fault who's really to blame for this goodbye forever now have a great life' ending I'm gonna riot

2024 reads / storygraph
How You Get The Girl
Contemporary romance
follows a basketball star who left the sport 8 years ago after an injury, who unexpectedly becomes the foster parents for her niece who she encourages to join the high school basketball team
and the team’s coach, who happens to have been a massive fan, and also needs a co-coach
they start to become friends, and when the latter reveals her insecurities about dating and relationships, the other offers to practice dating her so she can figure things out. but of course they start to fall for each other..
lesbian MC, questioning demisexual MC
#How You Get The Girl#anita kelly#aroaessidhe 2024 reads#I thought this was okay! kinda cheesy set up but also a lot genuine?#some really great well rounded characters and exploration of identity; careers/futures; fostering; depression/migranes;#the practice dating thing is silly as a set up but it wasn’t drawn out in a similarly ridiculous way -#they dealt with the complex feelings in a realistic way#in general I enjoyed her figuring out her demisexuality but it falls into that common and frustrating trope of acespec characters conflatin#aro and ace experiences and putting them all under ace. half of the stuff she talks about is romance and relationships and dating and it’s#discussed as being potentially separate things.#(other than her best friend saying maybe you like romance but not sex etc but he never says aro & it doesn't feel like she internalises it)#Obviously personal experience is complicated and not everyone can figure out the differences in their own feelings#but if you’re making the point to talk about asexuality; why not bring up aromanticism?#i get the impression that a lot of these authors don’t even consider it at all; their version of demisexuality encompasses both aro and ace#but they’re not fully conscious of that fact.#also I know I made that pissed off post about this thing the other day which yes was after reading this#BUT i’m not super mad about this book specifically as much as the trend. like it’s fine just….Oh Yay This Again. kind of thing.#also I read the audiobook and just now finding out her name is elle not el shocked me LMAO she should have the more butch version...#hey i also appreciate some calling-parents-by-first-name without it being a Thing#also this cover art is unsettling.
