The Ishigamis and The Gifts of Science
Dr. Stone is a love letter to humanity and its sciences. The main character, Senku, often acts averse to all forms of affection, and the only love he doesn't deny is his love for science. But Senku is so so full of love. He just expresses it in a way other than physical touch or words of affirmation. He gives.
But let's go back to the one who taught him so– Byakuya Ishigami, his father. The love of Senku's life.

Byakuya is introduced in the tenth chapter of the manga as a dotting father who sells his car to present Senku with scientific instruments he will need for a more efficient research. This car is Byakuya's means of transportation, and given that he is crying and shaking in this scene, it could not have been easy for him to lose it. But his love for Senku is so big, that he wants to support his son's passion even if it means sacrificing a great convenience for him.
And Senku? Senku truly fell in love with science at this moment.

If there is anything that Senku is, he is Byakuya Ishigami's son through and through. They may seem like two very different people, as Byakuya is an openly affectionate guy while Senku is more closed off with showing his true emotions. But Senku takes more from Byakuya than not, and one of them is by showing his love and/or care for others through giving the gifts of science.
And it starts with Byakuya.
[Bodysuit Acquired!]

Byakuya had failed his first attempt at being an astronaut ten years back, but he doesn't give up and tries again. Senku then creates a bodysuit that manipulates muscle movement to help Byakuya pass his swimming test. And while the bodysuit doesn't quite help Byakuya to swim, the thought Senku had put into it had motivated Byakuya more than ever to pass the test. This is one of the fundamentals of gifting– sometimes, it really is the thought behind it that matters.
This motivation is what Byakuya credits during his interview with JAXA for passing the tests. He understands that Senku might not have given him any words of encouragement, but this bodysuit was all the words that were needed between them. Senku wants Byakuya to achieve his dreams just as badly. It's the way Senku shows his love for his father.
And it's the way Senku shows his love for others too.
[Glasses Acquired!]

One of the primitive aspects of the Ishigami village is that it considers bad eyesight as a type of "disease". Fuzzy disease, to be exact.
Suika wears a melon mask at all times to help clear her eyesight, which Senku later reveals is due to the pinhole effect. She, however, has never told Senku or the others about having the fuzzy disease. Senku himself notes how odd it is for her to wear a melon around, and confronts her about it once he decides to create glass. This is one of the most beautiful scenes in Dr. Stone, as Suika finds out that her disease was never a disease, and is finally able to see as clearly as the others. Senku basically gives her perfect eyesight, something she didn't even know was possible before.
[Antibiotics Acquired!]

One of the most beloved people in this village is the priestess, Ruri. Two of Senku's new friends, Kohaku and Chrome are deeply affected by her unknown fatal disease. Senku is such a person who would help a stranger even if there is no benefit to do so (though he would never admit to it), what more a person who his new friends truly love and care about. He cures Ruri of pneumonia, giving her a chance to live a life without the worry of it being her last day every day.
[Cola Acquired!]

Senku forms an alliance with Gen, who plays the role of Tsukasa's spy, for the promise of a bottle of cola. Both Senku and Gen are aware that the cola is only a front for Gen's loyalty to Senku and the Kingdom of Science, for Gen needs his superficial reputation as a comfort and cannot simply join them if there is no personal benefit for him to do so.
This cola is also the first gift post-petrification that Senku brands himself on, probably because it represents the first gift that is not out of necessity and leans toward a comfort/luxury that they both used to enjoy in the modern world.
For a modern man such as Gen, drinking his favourite soda in the stone world might have been one of the happiest days in his life.
[Cotton Candy Acquired!]

Senku cares about people so much, even if the people in question have tried to kill him. Senku sees Homura as a soldier who is merely following the orders given by her leader, but he also sees the Homura as a lonesome girl sitting by herself on trees day and night.
As usual, Senku hides his kindness and care by showing an evil ulterior motive, such as turning Homura to their side using the cotton candy, but Ruri points out that this is a facade. Similarly to Gen, a person with such an ego is unable to seem as if he is doing something good out of the kindness of his heart.
[Stove Acquired!]

As winter approaches, the elders in the village are worried about losing people to the cold. Senku hears about this and creates a stove which has a multi-purpose of cooking and also radiating heat for the people to stave off the coldness of winter. And speaking of winter...
[Christmas Acquired!]

Senku hangs up lights in the tree for the "light bulb test" on a random night. Except the date isn't random at all and he drops enough hints for Gen to catch on that it is the night of Christmas. The significance of the day is only appreciated by Gen and himself, as they are the only modern timers in the village. It is for the sake of nostalgia, but Senku would rather be caught dead than admit that he is a sentimental guy with such irrational feelings.
And well, it all comes back to that scene with Byakuya, doesn't it? If you recall, Byakuya calls himself "Santa" while giving the scientific presents to the young Senku. This indicates Senku received them during Christmas. Which means... Christmas is a sentimental day to Senku and his father. An anniversary of Senku receiving his Christmas presents from Byakuya, which led to his deeper dive into his science obsession. The beginning of it all, one would say.
And even though he's dead and buried, Byakuya never stops giving. He gives Senku the Ishigami village to provide Senku with allies. He gives Senku Lillian's music, because he believes in the light of music and understands the importance of media to society. He collects platinum till his last breath, because he believes that Senku will need it someday. Byakuya keeps on giving to Senku, because his love for his son is so huge and unconditional. And because he promised.

Surely, there is no greater love in the manga than Byakuya's love for his son and Senku's love for his father. Byakuya could easily win ten billion best father awards... well, not like there's much competition for that in shounen mangas.
#wrote this at 7am and went back to sleep immediately#and now that im wide awake again and rereading it it isnt that bad so erm ok hit post!#anyways i just rly rly rly love senkus and byakuyas relationship ok#the times ive cried for dr stone? ALWAYS FOR THEM#byakuya collecting platinum moment and dying...#i have lots of thoughts abt senku and byakuya and senkus love for his dad#the way the manga ended... it rly shows how senku is still always thinking abt his dad first and foremost#the love of a parent and how their children will always be just a little kid to them...#lots of ellipsis in these tags lmao#theres actually even more moments of senku giving stuff to others ofc#like giving tsukasa literal LIFE and the camera to minami yada yada#but yea i think these points r enough to show that senku rly invents things for ppl to show affection#like sure he enjoys creating science shit#but he also cares abt them and it's why he does it#i would say that gift giving is his love language or whatever#but ive heard that that love language stuff is bs so idk anymore#ask gen abt mentalism lore not me#wait no even if it was bs gen would not care and would have it in his psychology book#it's senku who would get triggered methinks#anyways lets just assume it's not bs and well#theres that thing where u make another person feel appreciated not based on ur own love language but based on THEIR love language#so like for example to make senku feel loved u should give him presents#and so far i think ive noticed three ppl doing this...? byakuya yuzuriha and gen#maybe theres more but i cant think of anyone else now#well might make another post in the future on this idk. or ill just reblog this one to continue#senku ishigami#byakuya ishigami#dr stone#dcst#long post

Just dropping in too say, really enjoying the Killieposting lately! As someone who was never a horsegirl but did read a lot of books about them, I love it.
Anyways, since i know you are also a Diana Wynne Jones enjoyer, I was wondering if you'd ever read Enchanted Glass? feat. an old retired jockey living with a disability caused by an injury from his racing days! It's actually one of my favorite DWJ stories but no one else ever seems to have heard of it (also featuring weredogs, vegetable growing, grief, romance, the failures of the foster system, the king and queen and queen of faerie, and a couple of slightly cringefail wizards types(for anyone interested in such things))
I’m really glad! I start to feel embarrassed but then people send me lovely asks!
I wish I’d written Enchanted Glass(2010), but she got there first.
On balance it’s decent Jockey Representation, with a joke just for me:
“Tarquin’s small, bearded face looked to Andrew to be showing agony. But he reminded himself that the man had been a jockey and that jockeys were used to pain.”
— Enchanted Glass by Diana Wynne Jones
(Killie offscreen plaintively saying that that doesn’t mean they want to be in pain)
DWJ 🤝 Dick Francis with the content, of course, but note the stylistic lack of comma!!! That’s not DWJ’s cadence, that’s a Francis signature. That is LITERALLY a joke just for me. One point for that.
Unfortunately, I do have to condemn this as Problematic, even if it’s Aidan (feral orphan failed by foster system)POV and intended to reveal Aidan’s character:
“Aidan was astonished all over again at the little man with one leg, who energetically heaved himself into the room with his crutches. He should have had the hat, Aidan thought.”
Oh Aidan no -
“He was surely a gnome, beard and all. But his greying head was bare and slightly bald. “You know my brother-in-law, Tarquin O’Connor,” Mr Stock announced.”
Do not -
“Ah, no. He’s Irish. He’s a leprechaun, Aidan thought.”
Why do English people exist? Really? I do understand that this is a feral foster child POV of course, but come on, kid.
“He had been right to think leprechaun about the brave, shrewd little man with one leg. He almost was one. He was full of gifts.”
No you were not right Aidan, that’s plain racism, argh.
I like this shoutout to the Injured Jockeys Fund:
“Tark, as Mr Stock heard it, had been lucky to live, trampled and broken in all directions as he was. He’d never ride again. Nowadays, Tarquin lived on his savings and what he got from the Injured Jockey (sic) Fund…”
Still relevant today and a nice touch. Here’s the webpage for the IJF with some up-to-date statistics.
Quick edit to show how DWJ is very good with POV here in Andrew POV:
“Though the life of a jockey was something Andrew could barely imagine himself, he could tell it had been as thrilling and absorbing as his own work on his book.”
Yeah I reckon it might be Andrew lmao. Lmao it is as thrilling as writing an academic text for SURE. So empathetic of you to notice that.
(Love a good DWJ unreliable narrator)
on the whole, not bad Jockey Representation and a book that contains competitive flower and vegetable growing.
Me 🤝 Tarquin having to console ourselves for winning prizes for our cakes instead, due to blatant FUCKING AROUND FROM THE JUDGES. I saw you, Tark, you deserved that win, and I completely understand that cake prizes ain’t shit really, anyone can bake a cake. I don’t care that the fucking king of the elves himself is fucking us around in some kind of climactic scene or something, trust me, that kind of thing takes care of itself, narratively speaking. it’s the fact that you look back at your records for years afterwards and have to remember that ONE year, that ONE YEAR where they DELIBERATELY DICKED YOU OVER - “oh that’s the year that the elf king guy or whatever got mad” FORGET THAT? SO WHAT? GEOPOLITICS?? - I’ll be noticing the blank spot where my prize should’ve gone for the rest of my LIFE?
On balance I do appreciate this book! Thank you!!
#jockeyposting 🏇#the jam saga#I do appreciate that Tarquin was just living his own version of the jam saga in the background of the rest of the book#He is not the main character he does not want to be#good! for! him!!

Appreciate the little things.
Not to ignorantly deny all of the big bad things in the world, but to survive them.
#magpie ramblings#there's so much shit going on that it gets overwhelming#and it's sad that we've made ourselves feel guilty for looking away when it's too painful to watch#but we literally CAN'T survive if we keep dwelling on the unfairness of the world#and the more you ask why can't this happen or why is that happening#the quicker it is to just ask 'why do anything at all?' ... the answer is simple#'just because'#so fuck it#i'm going to appreciate a short video of someone drawing a cat; just because#i'm going to read a book about a long lost culture and history; just because#i'm going to post personal book reviews of books hardly anyone has heard of; just because#i'm going to be thankful that my indoor plants have been doing well; just because#i'm going to let someone make a decision i don't agree with and not confront them; just because#i'm going to spend the little of my own money helping maybe just one other person in the world; just because#i'm going to be kind to those who haven't treated me kindly; just because#i'm going to smile regardless of the unjust in this world; just because

Mario and the Incredible Rescue is mostly a nothing burger in terms of characterization, but here are a couple of bits that I liked:
He be pining hard. Also, my heart grows three sizes every time something confirms outright that Princess Peach is fantastic at her job as a ruler.
The Yoshis are very doglike in this book (positive). There's a moment later on where Mario momentarily breaks away from the group with Yoshi, and when they return Luigi and Toad are killing time by playing with the rest of the pack. Just a big candy-colored mob of friendly puppy-dinos who will also devour sentient beings alive if they're too mean.
Luigi's relationship with Toad in this book reminds me a lot of his interactions with the toads in the Luigi's Mansion series. I would not mind if Toad and Luigi developed this sort of dynamic in the movie canon somewhere down the line. Two more little moments:
#Meant to post this sooner but I got sick#but here you go#Super Mario Bros#super mario brothers#Toad#Princess Peach#Super Mario#Luigi Mario#(pardon me while I criticize the characterization of a children's book written in 2006 for funsies in the tags)#But they kinda messed up Toads personality#normally he's the little guy who's vaguely aware of his own limitations but is steadfast enough to do what he can to help anyways#but in this book they made him quivering and fearful but with a good head on his shoulders once he pushes past his worries#Like excuse me good sir you just took Luigi's character arc#But then again it was 2006... guess I should be appreciative of a mid-2000s piece of Mario media that#characterizes Luigi as something other than ''nervous punching bag''

Something About Jason Todd In The Future I Guess
Jason Todd, in the eyes of the world at large, is a mildly successful author who lives on his father’s trust fund. He is in the minority of his siblings to have a college degree, and he was missing for a significant period of time, presumed dead. He is 28 years old, and he spends his nights grappling from rooftops as part of a flock of colorfully dressed birds, striking fear into their lawless, beautiful city.
He is the Red Hood. He protects the parts of the city many glance over.
He is the only bird in this flock with fresh blood on its talons.
Two of his younger siblings are birds of prey who have learned to eat nuts and seeds. He is a songbird who has learned to hunt.
He does not do so carelessly.
It has taken him the better part of a decade, but he has learned the ways he is different to his siblings. To his father.
For them, killing would be easy.
For him, it is never easy.
He feels the blood of each body on his hands. He knows the story behind each one. This does not paralyze him, as it would his older brother, or deaden him, as it would his younger brothers.
Each person he kills has a life. Each bloody body tells a story.
He was one of those stories, once, after all.
But every person he saves has a life, too. And every story has to end sometime.
The Red Hood kills. It is a tool, one of many in his arsenal. Once, it might have been his tool of choice, but he knows better, now.
This flock knows better than anyone, after all, that there are worse things than death.
#red hood#jason todd#dc#batman#batfamily#batfam#this is just kind of a personal thought thing that might be part of some kind of future AU thing I do eventually#I know we appreciate the angst and everything in this fandom but I do want to see this family all reconciled and a full team#fight me etc etc#murder is wrong. to be clear. in our real world#but our world is a different one than existed a hundred years ago#let alone the world that exists in comic books#anyway the gist of my future AU is jason becomes batman because bruce offers it#and he actively chooses to give up killing to take the mantle#because that is the choice bruce offers him and bruce trusts him to be true to it#because jason is the son most like his father. in my view.#i think him inheriting batman would be a solid way for his arc to go#jason goes onto turn the manor into basically a full foster home and shelter to bruce's delight as a grandfather of like two dozen#terry and carrie are among jason's own flock of birds

I'm also just thinking about how people's frustration with The Bear this season in general and not just with SydCarmy is so indicative of how little people understand about story writing.
I got my BA in fiction writing which doesn't make me the world's leading expert or anything but I know enough to know that The Bear is exceptionally well-written and most of the complaints about this season stem from not knowing anything about writing a story.
And on top of this, the same people who don't know anything about writing a story are used to consuming really bad stories because right now, we're in one of the worst eras of television and honestly, writing in general, ever.
Because right now there's no expectation or requirement for a show or book to be well-written before production or publication. There's no requirement for it to actually be good, or for it to even make any sense at the writing level. All that matters is that people will watch it or read it and since people can't tell the difference between good writing and bad writing and largely aren't watching or reading for that reason anyway, who cares?
It's just an endless cycle.
Audiences don't recognize nor want good writing > Producers and publishers don't require nor pursue good writing > Writers that ultimately become successful can't nor need to write well > And the cycle starts over.
And because people are so used to bad writing, and can’t tell the difference between good and bad writing, and don’t want good writing anyway, when a show like The Bear comes around, a show that doesn’t hold their hand and explain everything to them or doesn’t spoon-feed them exactly what they want, a show that isn’t going to sacrifice the narrative through-line just to cut to the romantic chase - people are not only confused but pissed.
And then the most frustrating part of all this is that people then come to the conclusion the writer’s are bad at writing.
It is so bleak to be an aspiring writer right now, I swear.
#the bear#sydcarmy#being a hater#does no one remember game of thrones? how I met your mother? Episodes 7-9 of Star Wars?#those are just the ones I can think of right now but there are many#this is what I mean by being in an era of bad writing#shows and movies and books by people who don’t understand their own craft#aren’t you tired?#don’t you want more?#don’t you think you deserve more?#I can’t tell you how much fucking hope the bear gives me#how much of a relief it is to see writers with a clear understanding of their own story#and the ability and willingness to follow through on it#thank god#I’m so serious#thank god a show like this exists even though no one will appreciate it

20. What was your most anticipated release? Did it meet your expectations?
!!!! def the mars house by natasha pulley! it did meet my expectations and in a lot of ways vaulted over them, because the pre-release reviews were...... rough. thankfully i found a lot of the reasons for the bad reviews (not all of the reasons, but a lot of them) to be nonissues for me. i really liked that way pulley played with gender, the pluses and minuses of living in a non-gendered world. the mammoths thing was kind of silly but in a cute way. and gale really is the most compelling love interest of the year to me. gale themarshouse call me if it doesn't work out with january.
#thank you!!! ^^#there are always Issues with pulley's books that are worth pointing out and not accepting#but overall i just appreciate the way she treats serious societal problems because she doesn't act like she's on the debate team#and she's arguing Her Side against The Other Side#instead she gets in the minds of people who actually live in that society and presents a lot of different reactions#wherein yeah the MCs tend to be the ones with more loving/'progressive' ideals#but they're never perfect. they're never Only good guys. there is in fact a lot of murder in pulleyverse MCs/LIs. and that's okay#like the society in tmh has problems!! and no one has perfect opinions or reactions because it's impossible to be 100% Right#it really does respect both the author's characters and the readers' intelligence. expects you to be able to draw your own conclusions#but also in the end these books are (imho) first and foremost romances. like they're not paperback avon romances or whatever#but they are always Love Stories to whatever degree#but yeah anyway. thx again <3

i try not to be such a cunt in my head when thinking about people with low functional literacy/reading comprehension because i know a good chunk of the many illiterate people in this country didn't have the opportunity to learn. but i can't just pretend my childhood wasn't filled with peers bragging about the fact that they never read.
#like the acceptable attitude toward books at my schools was that reading was lame#i was literally bullied.. for reading#at one of the best public school districts in the state#not just by like The Cool Kids the normal ones too#i'm sure some of them read in secret but even that is so absurd and prevents someone from appreciating their own literacy#'oh well books aren't the only info source blahblah blah' but literally the reason it was considered lame was bc it was 'smart'#'nerdy' like kids who were in any way interested in learning outside the classroom were targeted
