santa monica is in limbo,

i heard it on the radio

the host said it cold and straight,

and no one gave a damn.

you, you’re riding high 

down the boulevard, 

chasing jameson with angels, 

making every palm tree zip by-

its a typical monday night,

and nothing can touch you.

not the news that broke,

or the radio silence-

nor the tears of an outsider,

or your calm inner violence.

the world changed its tone

when you dropped your shades

and looked it in the eye.

staring off into the dimming sun,

and you, surfing white caps

in choppy waters.

its low tide, but you can 

snuff the lines in the sand

and tilt your head back to jim- 

because the music’s never over,

in your world.

see the bright lights on the skyline

and when you take a drag,

racing from dive bar to dive bar,

dice swinging from the mirror.

you’re a wild storm in a heartbeat-

with toy guns in the backseat, 

sleeping anywhere under the sky-

reality swings at you and misses 

like a punch in a fist fight 

but what are you gonna do, 

when its all gone?

you can’t stay like this forever,

you’ve got nothing goin’ on.

trading youth for pleasure, 

and potential for the sublime-

you can keep robbing banks,

but you can’t rob time.

and now you’re lying

in the middle of the road,

the world is on fire-

but your hands are cold.

and you’re bailing down the interstate

arms held up high-

bible belt, pulled tight-

for the plunge.

oh, man of nowhere, 

you’re the brightest star,

everybody wants you-

so you burn half as long.

and you’re forever on the road

to nowhere fast,

always drowning your potential

in yet another full glass.

doing cuban eights 

on the surface of the sun,

for you, every crash 

is worth an ounce of fun.

and the end is rolling in, 

its doing circles around you now-

you do nothing-

but resort to pulling harder on the throttle-

thinking you can find the answers,

at the bottom of a bottle-

blowing smoke rings for drifters,

and those who got free,

and you-

wanting nothing, 

and wanting everything.

santa monica is in limbo,

it doesn’t matter where you heard it-

and if the world ends tomorrow,

you’ll be happy to go-

always driving down roads, 

where the heat spells free your mind.
