I have a lot of complicated feelings about Trigun Stampede, feelings I can't exactly summarize in one post or fully form quite yet (especially because the second season is not out yet).

I have a lot of personal attachment to Trigun Maximum and the particular way that story is told. I think the difference in story approach and overall atmosphere in Trigun Stampede initially turned me away from it. It was quick to judge, especially because I had yet to even watch the show when I started to feel this way.

Even after watching it (and rewatching it several times) I can't help but feel that something is a bit off for me. The show is really good, like really fucking good. Between the art direction, the animation, the music, and the voice acting, it is truly shaping up to fulfill all of its ambitions. On a technical level alone, the show is an incredible piece of art. It is also rare that a series like this even gets a modern remake at all. I'm so glad that it has brought new interest to a series I have loved for a while. I am so glad that Stampede can act as a modern gateway to the world of Trigun.

And yet, I have difficulty connecting to it the same way I did the original anime and the manga. It lacks some of the heart, and especially the soul of the manga/98'. I can't decide quite yet if it has to do with the pacing or some aspect of the writing yet, or both. All I know is that maybe, upon some reflection, I can figure out why I feel this dissonance between Stampede and the source material I love so much.

This is not really meant to be a hot take, or a statement of any kind. I'm just trying to gather my thoughts about Stampede while I prepare for Trigun Bookclub, and before the next season comes out.

I didn’t realize so many people thought that “starter Pokémon” HAD to be like, three stage fire, water, or grass. Like sure, that’s what we see in game but it’s always been special circumstances?? The Pokémon we receive are rare and powerful species that are being studied by a professor (usually). Oak chose us specifically to be trusted with his new invention to carry on his life’s work so of course he’d give us reliable partner for this task. Elm trusts us to run errands for him and probably wanted more data on the Pokémon he had, encouraging us to try the gym challenge. Birch was being attacked by a wild Pokémon and asked us to save him, but after seeing the bond we formed decided to let us keep it. Rowan mistakenly left behind his briefcase which we used to defend ourselves against wild Pokémon, leading Rowan to see potential in us with our partners. Juniper is similar to Oak, she trusted us along with our friends to fill out the Pokédex and gave us reliable partners to help with that goal as well as be a gift for helping her. Sycamore has ties to our mom and has rather similar goals to to Oak and Juniper, these are kids that he specifically chose to carry out this work. Hala was most likely holding on to this group for Hau to choose his partner, but knew that he could help out another young trainer who was new to the islands. Leon outwardly gifts us and Hop these Pokémon as he has known us our whole lives, of course he’d want to start us off on the right foot. Clavell says that it is customary for new students to the academy to have a partner, so if we do not have one he gifts us one.

All of this to say, it’s really just for gameplay mechanics but also to explain how we’re able to get these rare Pokémon you can’t find anywhere else in the game. Most other trainers in universe obtain their Pokémon through other means, usually catching what’s easily available. The professor of an area isn’t handing out Pokémon to EVERY child that comes to them. In Let’s Go Pikachu and Eevee we get a taste of what most trainers go through, encountering a wild Pokémon and it becoming our friend. Heck let’s look at Hop again, his starter is technically Wooloo, he’s had it since he was young and before Leon gave him another Pokémon

And I know in USUM the Ultra Recon Squad says that Poipole is a common starter for young trainers there but Ultra Space is also extremely unforgiving, to me it makes sense that adults would equip kids who wish to explore it with something that can defend them

I really didn’t mean for this to be this long but really there’s nothing that directly makes a “starter Pokémon,” it’s just whatever Pokémon you happen to start with, which could be literally anything

Anyways I don't want to ramble about this under someone's post but I do want to speak my mind about this since thank god I thought I was kinda being too attached to media and being sensitive about it. I'm glad I'm not the only one speaking about this.

While I loved the entire IEYTD event, answering questions in the emails whilst under the guise of Zoe and Zavier and all the articles, it seems a bit cruel to me just to say everything they've answered and all those articles are fake. It was all a test by The Agency to "test if we'd defect or figure out the puzzle". Like it feels bad man.

Not only because of this, but because the intention to pander an audience, knowing that we as a community really love Juniper. To confirm his bisexuality and EVEN back it up with statements about his "EXES" attempting to hack into things numerous times and even when asked if it's really true he's still alive, implying "I can't say nothing read the articles" just to sum it up "hah all fake get a grip" is such a low blow.

Another addition is when asked about the women of IEYTD (Solaris, Prism, Fabricator etc etc), all we got was "classified" and "can't say anything". Going to spit out a hardball here but Prism and Fabricator has had more of an impact to me than Ollie anyday so it felt weird to play pretend "Uncle Ollie" is missing and focusing on him when you got 3-4 main women characters RIGHT THERE. Even then, ending off the whole Ollie thing with (((REDACTED))) stuff like ,,okay?? What are we going to do with this? I'm not saying this to downplay Ollie btw. I think IEYTD characters are great and I'm biased and understand why Schell loves Juniper. I do too but I also really love Prism. I love both Juniper and Prism especially when you have entire games made about them in particular.

In a sense though, I feel like some of the articles have partial truths to them. It feels a little weird to me to write lengthy articles about some of the more prominent characters of the franchise then claim everything was fake. Obviously there are some that was whacky (Juniper giving honey to orphans sounds like a Hivemind thing to do) but to an extent there had to be some truths to it.

Overall, it feels a bit mean spirited knowingly feeding your fanbase some content of their favorite prominent characters just to say "lol this is a puzzle do better anyways have a discount code". I appreciate the discount code for their game but come on now 😭

I love thinking about IEYTD because OUGH that line in the very first intro?

“We’re playing a game, you take from me, I take from you.”

It’s so true. Zor is playing this intricate game of chess with Zoraxis as their pieces, and The Agency as their opponent. They play John Juniper like a pawn, ever moving their game. They take the Phoenix—if only for a moment. They convince Juniper that if he plays along to this scheme he’s convinced he’s the star of, it’ll be the greatest role he’s ever seen. But that was a simple game. A child’s puzzle compared to the greater web of lies.

Prism gets played, too. She’s a piece captured by Zoraxis, and taken to make masterpieces. Zor now has access to ending the game right then and there, but The Agency’s hero—their game ending piece—swoops in at the last minute. No matter, they still had Prism thinking she knew the full plan for long enough to convince her she was important. They let her make her robots. They let her make powerful moves. They convinced her the simple problem was bigger and bigger until she felt wanted enough to give her Telekinesis information over. And then they tore down the facade, just like they did with Juniper.

See, in amongst all of this, I like to think Zor’s plan was so infinitely bigger than the pawns they play can realise. It’s this ever interconnecting web of lies, secrets and pieces moved in the dark. I guarantee people who think they know everything—people who think they’re Zor’s right hand—such as The Fabricator, that powerhouse with seemingly everything under her control, only knows what Zor wants her to know.

Ollie—who, yes, doesn’t play a large role in Zoraxis, I know, but let me continue—worked frequently alongside Kinesium and dangerously volatile information, and yet knew nothing. They knew absolutely nothing about the evil Zoraxis was doing. They’d been isolated from the world and the truth.

I wonder if some of their plays included dropping hints. Dropping information right into The Agency’s lap. Zor progresses the game intentionally—moving a core piece away, giving a pawn away freely—because it really is just a game to them. Anything to keep it going. Anything to keep it interesting.

And so, to summarise, my point is, Zor is holding all of the strings. Zor is the only one with knowledge as to what goes on behind the scenes. Zor is the only one with full knowledge of every Zoraxis plan and play. They are the only one who knows everything, and the game will keep being played until it is won.
