I don’t think that the minecraft jumanji ripoff would actually have even been the worst plot (still definitely not the best choice) IF it had been done genuinely. IF (and it’s a big if) it was genuine then I could see being highly effective.

Waking up and being trapped in a strange new environment where you have to discover the rules Does fit with Minecraft. Learning to adapt to a foreign environment and love the world around you Does fit with Minecraft. The level of solitude that happens when you are the only person trapped in a foreign land Does fit with Minecraft. Even having new players and people come into the world after you’ve become accustomed to it Does fit with Minecraft (the joy of multiple players and showing off your builds). All of these are relatively jumanji-esque plot beats

But what Doesn’t fit with Minecraft is the bathos, the lack of sincerity. The trailer (and the movie most likely) lacks the level of sincerity to properly make the trope function. It plays everything as a joke or a bit when it could have easily just played it seriously and had a better movie (plotwise, the design choices are a whole nother level) This isn’t unique to the Minecraft movie and has been happening in movies and tv shows for a while but this movie seems so ungenuine in its writing that it especially demonstrates this issue

Being my father's daughter means I pay a lot of attention to the background of the photos and tv shows and when Gwen is at the video store in "Random Shoes" there are a lot of films of course and the ones that I know and was able to recognize were in the first photo there are Titans, American Beauty and X-Men

on the second photo the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy(Alan💜), 13 going 30, the Cinderella story, Legally Blonde 1 and 2, Titanic and Ghostbusters 1 and 2

on the third one are basically the same films as the above but the ones below are The Princess Diary, Flubber and back To The Future

and last photo is basically the same as second one but a bit up close and has a lot of Simpsons, Bratz, Peter Pan, quite a few of Indiana Jones, the first three Harry Potter's, Jumanji and some 007's, if you recognizes any other movies do let me know would love to know 💜💜

I made my friend @killallyourfrendz watch Samurai Flamenco with me, and here's the highlights reel of their predictions and commentary:

Early Predictions

TV news guy is going to bankroll an evil organization of villains to get more viewers

Masayoshi goes full villain

Masayoshi is in a coma (from episode 7 onward--later changed to "from the end of episode 1 onward")

"Yeah, I'd beat this guy up, too."

Episodes 8-10 (King Torture Arc)

The rest of the show will just be 10 episodes of “horrific clean-up” after the King Torture fight

King Torture will be Red Axe

Episodes 11-14 (Flamengers Arc)

It's a Truman Project situation: "they’re all in on the bit except for Samurai Flamenco and the cop”

"Mari should just become a villain"

"This is all shenanigans."

"We are just speed-running seasons' worth of content right now."

“Are we going to find out the girlfriend was King Torture this whole time?”

"This whole time Goto’s been living his own fucked-up Black Mirror horror story.”

"Masayoshi actually blew up his own apartment; he’s having a Goto moment right now."

New fic idea: Modern Middle-Aged Man in Middle Earth.

His wife and kids have left him and he's alone, low self-esteem, mental health in the dumpster. Slumped on the sofa on a Sunday afternoon, surrounded by wrappers and empty crisp packets, TV on with the Netflix "are you still watching?" banner on the screen. On a nearby table are final demand letters and bills, an eviction notice, and a photo frame with two children at the beach.

Modern Man decides to have clear out; might as well before the bailiffs come and the eviction becomes real, less stuff to move out with etc. He comes across an old PlayStation 2 games console that belonged to his son. He decides fuck it, let's plug it into the TV and have a go.

Lord of the Rings: Return of the King has been left in the disk drive. The menu loads up. Modern Man grabs the controller and begins to play as Aragorn getting through the paths of the dead.

The console short-circuits and transports Modern Man to Middle Earth (yes I know I know it's basically Jumanji blahblabhlaja)

He encounters other male characters (maybe in Rohan but idk) and sees how they are men of honour, role models, fighters, doing their duty for their homeland

Cue the CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT

He starts eating well, sparring in the training ground and working out. Many, many years of eating junk food and sitting at an office desk haven't done him any favours, but shit it's not like there's much else to do in a world where electricity and desk jobs are not a thhing.

He starts working through some of the Issues that he has avoided for years. Finds out that talking about them helps, a lot.

Figures out why his wife (who is called Penny) left him: he loved her but didn't regularly show it, kept his feelings bottled up, didn't open up to her, made her feel shut out. Reeealllyy want Boromir to help him figure this out, don't ask why. Already knew his missed his kids (called Charlotte and James btw) but now knows he really misses them, would trade anything to hug them one last time.

Participates in a battle. Isn't an amazing warrior but has had enough practice to hold his own. Has a few close calls. But keeps going and keeps going. He starts to tire; he's not invincible and there are so many enemies.

Eventually takes a fatal blow. 😭

Wakes up back in the Modern World.

Realises he's been given a second chance, gets his Shit Together. Hugs Charlotte and James as soon as he sees them (and probably doesn't let go for a while despite their cries of "Daaad, get off!") . Gets evicted but finds a better place to live, closer to his kids. Joins the gym. Makes up with Penny. Things are looking up.

The PlayStation 2 console is packed away..... For now.

There are some bits that are not entirely... original.. But idk, I would read it?? Maybe??? 🤔

what's different about nancy drew than other shows in the same vein is evidenced in this jumanji episode. any other teens-fighting-supernatural-bad-guys tv show would have the cast desperately trying to figure out the rules of a deadly mythical board game and freaking out that a supernatural board game even exists. meanwhile at nancy drew it immediately cuts to a montage (complete with rock music) of the group really successfully playing the game.
