11. Babysitting Spoon for a day.

He's terribly warm, for something so small and thin. Even when he trembles and whines, begging for Cheshire's hand to keep patting him with big tapioca pearl eyes, the heat he exudes is something she almost would have expected from his handler, not from this twig of a dog.

Regardless, Cheshire sighs, frowning down at the pup who rolls over to have his underbelly given attention. Cheshire really wishes that he understood why in the world Steel thought that she was the perfect person to dogsit. The two of them aren't even close. In fact— and yes, certainly this is it— Cheshire is quite certain that this is some form of psychological warfare disguised as a show of trust. Yes, that would be Marshal Steel's angle, wouldn't it?

It's no secret that Cheshire doesn't like dogs.

It would be unfair to say that she hates them. It would even be a disservice to say that he dislikes them. He thinks that every dog is great and wonderful and everything a person never could be.

So long as they keep a twenty foot difference away from her— and even that is generous of zir.

She knows how fast they can turn. Lickety-split, quicker than lightning to a rod, ivory goring flesh as the handler barks orders and Cheshire is sent stumbling back in line. They don't bother to heal the bites. There was no pain in such lessons to stay back, stay in line, blocked by the gate in zir spine, so a lesson had to be learned in other ways. The fear of infection, sepsis. Of being rendered inert- a useless, blunt tool meant to be scrapped for parts. To be submitted to the ridicule of the others, fingers twitching louder against zir ears than rattling branches on a window. The shame. The fear. Being small. Tiny. Weak. Cradling his arm, praying the stitches and antiseptic would stay.

Even Spoon could leave his legacy on Cheshire's wrist if he so desired.

The thought churns his stomach and Cheshire's hand retracts from Spoon as if she'd been burned, leaving the dog whining and worried as Cheshire shrinks away. Zir mind is sharp and coiled, curdled on her tongue, spoiled and rotten just like everything about her. Just like everything about the world. People. Zirself.

"It's alright," she says, offering the worried greyhound a wan mile, voice honey as he gulps back the soured milk in zir chest. He doesn't dare touch Spoon's mind when hers is like this. He doesn't deserve it. Chen would have her head, too. Chen doesn't deserve that... even as annoying as he is.

Daniel would be mad at him too, wouldn't he?

Cheshire can't stop the small smile from zir face at the thought of him. Even far away, the thought of him clears the clouds from his head. Makes curdled milk turn pillowy soft yogurt, even makes Spoon lurching to lick away at his face not so scary, not so bad. Minus the breath smell.

Daniel is just as bad with Spoon as Cheshire is.

Uncertain, a little jumpy. Unable to fully predict the dog's wants and needs, unable to fully read his movements. Julia is different. Sure. Confident. Even when she gets it wrong, bouncing back like the mistakes she made never mattered all along.

Cheshire sighs, giving up on pushing Spoon back. Zir eyes still wander the room, as if she were being watched. It still makes zir stomach churn to let zir guard down. Force zir muscles soft, let Spoon climb down into her lap. Let himself look as tired as she feels. As small.

"How am I going to do this?" She whispers to Spoon in the dark, gingerly scratching his ears. His little eyes are intent, wide, listening; little tapioca pearls of attention and affection, and she can't help but give his little forehead a kiss. Zir hand softly holding his muzzle. Never forgetting.

Daniel.

Julia.

Sometimes the lies grate. Sometimes zir teeth ache between kisses. Lies growing like cavities, sweetened and smoothed with diversions and secrets. But it's better for everyone involved, isn't it? What people don't know won't hurt them. Julia doesn't need to know her best friend and situationship beat her bloody at the gala. Daniel doesn't need to know his fucked-up lover broke his knee beyond repair. Chen doesn't need to know he trusted a killer to babysit his dog.

No one ever needs to know.

"It'll all be over soon," He murmurs into Spoon's fur, stroking the silver silk, allowing herself the weakness of a hug, the shame of curling into the happy, warm, trusting body that believes zir hands could never hurt.

One way or another.

Good end or bad.

This masquerade will be over soon.

Rüdiger (based on a true story)

This is the grave of Rüdiger. I buried his imaginary body for the group show 'Von Pionierpflanzen und Flâneusen', developed by Julia Kiehlmann. The exhibition surrounded the topic of abandoned and therefore vacant areas within the Eastside of Leipzig, highlighting the socio-political, ecological and also emotional meaning of these urban wastelands for their human visitors. I placed the grave on a nice spot next to a little bush, on a wide so-called 'Brache' underneath a car traffic bridge and besides train tracks. A perfect place to bury your beloved animal friend.

Rüdiger was an experienced tomcat living on a graveyard in Leipzig West. One of his eyes was dead and his fur was always a little filthy. He looked a little grumpy but he was actually a very friendly fella who also enjoyed some company, since he used to sit directly at the gate of the boneyard, where all the people would enter. Shortly after the first socially traumatizing lock-down, due to the pandemic, in 2020, he suddenly disappeared without a trace. His body was never found and people believe that some lonely soul kidnapped him as a companion. I kind of identified with that cat, ever since i first met him when i was doing a sculpture on that graveyard. One day, for no special reason - more as a little joke - I placed my own face on his picture with that simple spot camera in the instagram story tools (unfortunately the zuckerberg deactivated that nice tool a few years ago). This cute picture of Rüdiger (including my own hand in it, petting him) finally turned into a funny kind of ego-cam mirror self portrait. And I had turned into the Cheshire Cat version of Rüdiger. Needless to say, it somehow felt like burying myself in that lovely little grave under the bridge.

Harry LOVES James in an avuncular way. James has been part of his London-based support system from the earliest 1D days. Here’s how James describes it in last October’s New Yorker festival interview:

At the New Yorker Festival on Sunday (9th October) Corden revealed to staff writer Rachel Syme that it was Louis Tomlinson's late mother who helped introduce him to Styles when the singer was 18, and One Direction were in TV show X-Factor in London. As reported by People, Louis Tomlinson’s [late] mum Johannah Deakin introduced him to Styles, having previously been a chaperone for one of Corden’s television shows.

He said that she, “wrote me an email one night saying, ‘My son’s down in London. I don’t know if you remember me. You met him years ago.’ Corden explained the email continued: “We’re slightly worried that he’s in London on his own. Would you reach out to him?”

The presenter agreed, and spent time with all of the group. He said: “Various members of that band would come around to our house in North London and we’d eat pizza and play PlayStation and my wife [Julia] would feel like she was babysitting!”

Speaking about how his relationship with Styles carried on from that point, the host of The Late Late Show continued: “From then on, our friendship has grown, and I love him very, very much. I’m very proud of him and protective of him, always.”

Awww: you know how H loves to hang out with families. And he either met Ben Winston through James (they are besties) or at the same time because of the documentary Ben’s company shot for itv back in 2010-11, but that relationship is mixed up in here too.

And James’s rep is…tarnished these days, as he tries to re-establish his career in the UK (without Ben by his side, as Ben is still in LA). Which H probably hates.

Who is well-liked in the UK, and whose reputation could lift James’s by association (a pseudo-halo effect, if you will)? Our beloved green-eyed man from Cheshire.

So maybe H sees this as a small gift to a friend who has been there for him and had his back from the earliest moments of his career? When he was still a kid, James helped him. A decade plus on, the roles have reversed and OF COURSE H would love to return the favour!

“-You can admit it, Josh. It’s okay.” Cheshire grinning into his pouting face and crossed arms. “It’s mature. Respectable to admit you’re wrong.

Heheheehe. She’s inching closer to his still grumpy face, like an intimidation tactic but more trying to see if she can crack him into a laugh.

Her nose pressed against his, eyes comically wide watching his. “juliaaa, you were right..” She whispered, like trying to get him to repeat after her.

But he was a tough nut when he wanted to be, huh?

Her hands tried for the underside of his ribs, a change of tactic to crack this man with ticklishness.

God, still nothing?

One of those growling huffs of frustration at him, this man that she loved and his beautiful stubborn face. She’d get him.

Her hand reached out, to squish his lips together and try to move them to look like he could be talking, her voice changing to something higher and more puppet-like, putting on an Irish accent much more strong than anything she’d actually heard from Josh.

“Man oh man, do i have a smart girlfriend. Feck. Julia, you’re always right and im sorry i ever even questioned what you said. not only are you beautiful but you’ve never had a wrong opinion ever. I love you so much Juliaa.”

VICTORY. Pure glee at watching the laughter take hold, the shaking of his shoulders and falling forward of his head, that smile, that smile.

Then she threw her arms around him to attack with a barrage of fat kisses to his cheek. “I WIN. I win, I GOT YOU.”

4/23/2023 - 4/29/2023: Cheshire by ITZY

After a year of hate for their releases, ITZY finally found relief from the backlash with "Cheshire". 2022 was a hard year for the girls of ITZY. Thankfully, this comeback gave them the adoration they deserved.

ITZY is a 5-member girl group under JYP Entertainment. They debuted February 11, 2019 with "Dalla Dalla", a song all about breaking the rules and being yourself. This became ITZY's signature: breaking the rules of what society wanted them to be. They immediately became one of the biggest groups of the 4 gen.

Music is subjective. People are always going to have something to say. But, when that number jumps to the vast majority, it is hard not to take it personally. In summer of 2022, ITZY's promotional team dropped hints at their next comeback, calling it "Checkmate". The visuals featured ITZY members dressed as dark royalty, decorated with chess pieces and jewelry. Fans were bursting to find out what was coming next. Then, very suddenly, the posts were flooded with neon colors and spray paint, followed by ITZY in brightly colored layers. The art read "Sneakers", and fans were confused. Teasers of the comeback came out and fans were immediately displeased. When the video for "Sneakers" finally dropped, the reviews were scathing. Some were happy with the brighter sound and fun nature, but many were still disappointed that they didn't get something to match with "Checkmate". The comeback was pronounced a failure, leaving ITZY and JYPE to work on the next comeback.

Not long after, ITZY dropped their English debut "Boys Like You" to a temperamental audience. Fans were extremely confused at this release, claiming it sounded like a song from Disney Channel or "an old Taylor Swift song", nothing like the ITZY they always knew. After all of the hate, several interviews came out with ITZY being noticeably unsure of themselves, scared for what would come next. Multiple members broke down crying in videos when the subject of hate or confidence was brought up. Things were not looking good.

"Cheshire" was released on November 30, 2022. The video features ITZY's iconic sharp vocals, strong dance details, and some of the cleanest transitions and editing in any music video ever made. On top of that, it serves as the pinpoint in which ITZY received mercy from the public bashing of their releases. It was everything the fans knew and loved about the girls! Hopefully, it is also the start of more good things to come from them.

In Kpop, it is very dangerous when a group is met by hate and a loss of sales. Depending on the artist, it can mean an instant disbandment or drop from the label, or it can mean harsher treatment behind the scenes. ITZY has not had a comeback since "Cheshire" and fans are anxious about when, or if, something is coming.

ITZY is also full of powerhouse members. Ryujin competed on MIXNINE, a competition show featuring trainees from various agencies, each competing to see who could make the strongest team. The show was also a battle of the sexes. Ryujin landed in 1st place for the girls and was offered a place at YG Entertainment. She stayed at JYP and was a very highly anticipated trainee. Chaeryoung competed on SIXTEEN, the show that formed iconic girl group TWICE, alongside her sister, Chaeyeon (IZ*ONE and soloist). Yeji was called JYP's "secret weapon" on the show that formed Stray Kids.

Nowadays, ITZY is known best for their strong dance skills, group unity, stage presence, and endurance. I hope to see more from them soon!

Ze presses another kiss, onto the tip of her nose this time, pausing to coo at her grumble. Holding her chin in zir hands, hot skin against silvery cool.

It's not often that Argent lets zir indulge like this, so ze plans to make the absolute most of the 5 minutes of unregulated affection she's given zir.

Cradling her face in zir palms, ze dapples kisses from the corner of her jaw to her temple, tracing over her eyebrow, revelling in the giggle it prompts from Argent. Ze keeps tabs on Argent's mind, when she needs a few seconds for a break, what makes her heart flutter, when a cautionary warning rises in her conscious as the nanovores get too jittery. What she likes and dislikes, and, as Cheshire ventures lower, daring for a kiss, daring for more as she reciprocates, zir tongue swiping across metallic lips and pressing deeper as her mouth parts for zir, ze makes sure to map out every inch and movement that makes her mind go fuzzy and soft. What makes it grow opaque at the edges, stained-glass thoughts of affection muddling with desire.

Ze pulls back, smiling, bubbly, satisfied when Argent pushes softy at their chest, licking zir lips with a cheshire-cat grin at the hazy look in her eyes.

Julia coughs on the other side of the couch.

She's pouting, brow furrowed and face propped up on her forearms from where she leans over the armrest.

"It's been five minutes," she informs, flicking her gaze to Argent's frown with a smug grin. "Sorry to steal zir from you, Angie, but it's my turn."

A chuckle tumbles from Argent, little rumbles of her throat where Cheshire still traces the line between jaw and neck. "It hardly counts as stealing when I was already planning to dump Smoocher Supreme onto you before ze gets too carried away," she says, drawing an offended gasp from Cheshire.

"I do not get 'too carried away,'" ze sniffs, dramatically tossing a lavender-dyed lock of hair over zir shoulder. Ze is indeed patting down heat that had been gathering in zir stomach, but neither of them need to know that. "Doting on you is hardly a crime."

"Wiggling your tongue in my mouth is your definition of doting?" Argent quips, an amused smirk doing beautiful things to her face and- oh. Uh-oh. There's something else swimming in her eyes, a flash of mischief, quicksilver and piercing. "In that case, Julia, how about you show Cheshire what real doting looks like?"

Oh. Uh-oh, big uh-oh indeed, because glancing at Julia was a bad decision because she's smirking with that look in her eye and zir can feel the flush of embarrassed excitement beginning to creep onto zir face.

"With pleasure," Julia smirks, stalking towards zir, looking every bit predatory, making Cheshire feel every bit prey at the confident saunter in her hips.

"Come on, Bluebird, have some mercy here, yeah?"

"Mercy? I think I'll make you beg for that, first," she purrs, crawling over Cheshire and pushing zir onto their back. Ze lets out a small oof as ze falls, and. Oh. Oh, Cheshire moans at the sight, quiet and breathy and helpless at the look in Julia's eyes that says she's about to devour zir. The heat that had been simmering in zir earlier is coming back full-force like a punch to the gut. Oh dear, there's no getting out of this, is there? Ze doesn't want to get out of this.

The whimper in zir chest damn near comes to fruition when Julia leans down and nips at zir jaw. Gasp becomes groan as the swipe of her tongue on zir pulse point becomes riddled with teeth, and ze tries not to pant, not to rip a chunk out of Angie's carpet at the force of zir need when Julia holds zir chin up, sucking a bruise into zir skin. And. The angle she tilts zir head at. Ze. Ze is staring right at Angie.

Angie who stares back, eyes molten and flickering with interest. Angie who bears witness to this, to the way ze melts all to easily beneath Julia. Angie who projects what she sees, projects zir's laboured breathing and needy gaze, a mirror of Cheshire's embarrassment tossed right back into zir face.

Cheshire's entire body blooms like a red light-up Christmas tree at the fully amused smirk she throws at zir.

Julia pulls away from the fifth hickey she's worn into Cheshire's skin, tossing Argent a smug look. "Wanna watch me show Chess what real doting looks like?"

Cheshire's hands smack onto zir face to try and hide the heat of zir blush, grumbling when laughter pearls out of Julia at zir expense. Devil woman. Ze will get back at her later for sure.

Argent smiles and Cheshire frowns at the spark of sadness and disappointment that shoots through Argent, gone and swiped away with the hand of someone who's used to pushing those feelings aside.

"I wish I could, but I'm afraid that this is it for me," she says, and Cheshire's nose tickles with the buzz of the nanovores' excitement in Argent's hindbrain. She gives Cheshire a placating smile at the wave of concern and affection ze sends her way, small, reassuring thoughts that yes, she'll be fine, and no, they don't have to stop because of her, and if they do, she'll punt zir into the sun the next time they fight.

"You kids have fun, I'm going to go eat the churros we got earlier. Let me know when you're done so we can watch The Nun." She says with a wink, sorrow replaced by enthusiasm at the thought of cinnamon-sugary goodness. Cheshire huffs, smiling, glad at the bounce in her step and the genuine joy that she gets to enjoy the kick of eating all of the sweets that were supposed to be intended for the three of them. Never mind that ze would have given her all of zir's if she asked, anyways.

But Julia is tilting zir chin up again to face her, and Cheshire gulps as zir thoughts resettle on the devil above zir. Julia's grin is long, wicked, and hungry.

"Try not to scream too much, corazón. We don't want to disturb Angie while she's eating sweets."
