Can we have your thoughts on Darlin' getting drunk for the first time? Oh, also, does Jake ever let himself get drunk with her? Maybe when they celebrate something at home alone together? Or is it a "if you drink, I stay sober" kind of deal? Does Darlin' ever see Jake get drunk? Can he get drunk (on anything other than her pus-)?
Tumblr media
The first time Darlin' gets drink is right after she turns twenty-one. I talked a bit about it here. She goes a little too hard at the Hard Deck, and she definitely pays for it the next day. But Jake is there to ease the hangover with plenty of ice water, some painkillers, and couch snuggles.
Darlin' gets the opportunity to see him drunk on his thirty-first birthday. He didn't mean for it to go as far as it did, but everyone was ordering him drinks, and Penny's whiskey sours are top tier. (And it turns out he can get drunk on something other than her pussy!) (alcohol consumption below)
The Hard Deck was warm and loud, and Jake was trying his best to figure out which song was playing on the jukebox, but he couldn't stop laughing. He counted five empty glasses in front of him, and that was just what he'd had in the past hour. There was a woman in the world's smallest shirt trying to get his attention, and he started laughing at her, too.
"You want another drink, birthday boy?" Rooster asked him, and all Jake could see was a hideous tropical print shirt fading in and out of his vision. That's when he realized just how drunk he was.
"Please, go away," he told the random woman, placing his hand on her shoulder and pushing firmly away from him. "Where's my Darlin'?"
"I'm right here, Jake."
God, your voice was like a beacon, and when he turned around, you were right there. You glared at the other woman even as Jake wrapped you up in a hug and whispered, "I think I'm drunk."
"I know you're drunk, big guy," you replied, caressing his cheek. He was ready to roll over onto his back like a dog as soon as you gave him attention in this state. He just wanted to be at home, only the two of you, where it was quiet and he could bask in your attention. "Here, sip this."
You pressed a cold glass of water into his hand, and he chugged the whole thing down before wiping his lips with the back of his hand and saying, "I wanna take you home. Let's go."
As soon as he reached into his pocket for the keys to his truck, you plucked them from his hand. "I'm your designated driver, remember? If you really want to go home, I'll be taking us there."
"Let's go," he repeated, thinking about laying on the couch at home while you played with his hair, but as soon as he got in the passenger seat of his truck, he fell asleep. He woke up again the next morning on his bathroom floor.
"Darlin'?" he groaned, voice like gravel. You were there immediately as he got sick, fingers combing through his hair as you assured him everything would be alright.

Paul collecting John-related things
"MPL's [Paul's London office] interior style is quietly art deco. Its walls are hung with modern paintings, or framed photos by Linda McCartney, and pride of place goes to her famous shot of Paul and John, laughing and grasping each other's hands at a Sgt. Pepper party in 1967." (Conversations With McCartney, Paul Du Noyer, 2016)
"Children's artwork hung on the walls and above the doors. He was a guy who could afford Picassos, but chose to display his kids' finger-paintings. A big jukebox shone from his sitting room. On the bulletin board in the kitchen were personal photos of McCartney with John Lennon." (http://www.meetthebeatlesforreal.com/2014/09/one-fans-secret-paul-adventure.html)
"A quick scan of his studio kitchen reveals a copy of Mary McCartney’s recipe book and a John Lennon calendar; March’s pin-up is “Moody John” in sunglasses posed against the New York skyline." (Interview with Mark Blake for Q: Songs in the key of Paul. May, 2015)
"I recently bought a lot of drawings and writings by John. I have them on my wall so I get to look at them all the time." (Paul, The Lyrics, 2021)
“McCartney tells me he treasures a six-foot-tall print of a photo he has of himself and Lennon, taken by Linda during the White Album sessions. "I've got the pad and I'm writing, and he's just looking over at me, and you can see the body language and everything: These guys love each other." (interview in GQ 2018)

Thinking a lot about some memory parallels in season two...
About how everyone in Soho is dressed VERY ANACHRONISTICALLY, but not at all coordinated with each other. Clothes look pristine, brand new, unsullied, unworn. Caricatures of humans from the 40s, 70s, 90s, 2000s. Like an oversimplified idea of what Normal Humans look like.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Like uhhh excuse you white fur coat, leopard print skirt and platform shoes? Weird BRIGHT FUCKING YELLOW shirt, a flowy vest and leather pants? 70s crochet sweater with brown pants, crimped hair and chunky heels?
Rosie the Riveter This lady (Rosie is a different extra!) over here is either wearing big flowy skirts or actual mechanic's overalls like the war posters. She's EVERYWHERE throughout the season:
Tumblr media
Rainbow tie dye, big hat, overcoat with pinback buttons? Like the guys in the cemetery?
Tumblr media
Lady why are you fully lurking behind a pillar and staring at the Hamm Hams
Tumblr media
What's my point? Point is... point is...
Gabriel's memories are the same.
RUSSIA - big hammer and sickle neon sign outside, two guys in back playing chess, one with a big bushy beard and the other a flat cap. Background music sounds like traditional/folk Russian music played on a balalaika, but playback on a ratty old stereo.
Tumblr media
USA - Route 66 sign, hubcaps, money wallpaper, budweiser neon sign, bar/pool table/pool cues, American flags fluttering in the wind outside, 50s style radio on the shelf, SAME TWO GUYS IN BACK but now playing cards, and the one on the right has a baseball cap instead. And I don't wanna be like "what modern bar would be playing Buddy Holly on the radio" but... after hearing the background music in the Russian cafe, that is a CHOICE.
Tumblr media
Hell, check out Not-Billie-Piper back here and her GIANT 50s up-do:
Tumblr media
SAME THING AT THE RESURRECTIONIST, YEAH? ALL THE SONGS ON THE JUKEBOX ARE SCOTTISH OR PERTAINING TO SCOTLAND. "Letter from america" by the PRoclaimers starts playing but it was released in fucking 1987
Tumblr media
And of course we know this pub is COVERED in Pressburger references, which we know carry way more meaning than simple fun cameos or whatever. Barring that, this is the Scottishest-Pub-est-looking-pub I've ever fucking seen, and it's SO CLEAN.
Tumblr media
A fly IN the movie playing on the screen while we watch Gabriel's memories being returned to him from the fly he receives in this memory? More likely than you think (I can't find the movie name! Not in the X-Ray apparently)...
Tumblr media
Anyway all that to say I think the show is trying to tell us SOMETHING is wrong the entire season. There's evidence shit's out of order, everything is WEIRD and high saturation, even people's makeup (Crowley's bloody orange half the time), and it all feels Extremely Set up...
OR poorly remembered.

Trudy was once a woman. A real woman. Trudy Douglas had aspirations, opinions, ideas, a high school diploma. She liked to dance and had a warm smile. Her hair was red like a flame, her pale skin scattered with freckles like stars. She had beautiful green eyes…or maybe they were blue? Blue, yes they were blue. She had beautiful blue eyes, the color of the summer sky. Her lips were a nice red color, plump and pretty looking. She was a gentle soul, a small thing.
Tucker Trout had met her directly after high school. Trudy was a waitress at a diner down the road in Peachyville. It was an early morning…or it might have been later, or perhaps it wasn't even day at all. But she was humming and dancing along to the jukebox in the corner and Tucker had been working hard on an invention the whole night before. Or maybe day. She had been sweet, a nice smile and cutesy voice, he learned her name because it was printed on her name tag. Trudy.

heres that trout family angst oneshot i promisedddd
i adore trudy so much

Songs I think fit The Magnus Archives (It’s mostly character vibes)
(There’s some for a JonMartin type of vibe but there’s some for other characters but that’s more subjective than anything) // (I love seeing these when other people do them so thought I’d add some to the mix)
Also this will (hopefully) be updated when I think of more
All Things End - Hozier
Francesca - Hozier
I Always Knew - The Vaccines (For the romcom office flashback sequence we never got)
Family Jewels - Marina
Just Take My Wallet - Jack Stauber’s Micropop
As The World Caves In - Matt Maltese (ouch)
Burning Pile - Mother Mother
In A Week - Hozier/Karen Cowley
Fourth Of July - Sufjan Stevens
Persephone - Daisy The Great
One More Hour - Tame Impala (to me at least it’s kind of end of series 3 Tim vibe…)
Vending Machine Of Love - The Stupendium (On the contrast, before/during series 1 Tim vibes)
The Stand - Mother Mother
Problems - Mother Mother
Like Real People Do - Hozier
The Fine Print - The Stupendium (Always get your contracts checked)
Do It All The Time - I Don’t Know How But They Found Me
Ramblings Of A Lunatic - Bears In Trees
Absinthe - I Don’t Know How But They Found Me
Mary On A Cross - Ghost
Saint Bernard / Saint Bernard 2 - Lincoln (same song but different music)
Alien Blues - Vundabar
I love you so - The Walters (JonMartin vibe but also Tim and Sasha, again ouch)
Will We Talk - Sam Fender
She Wants Me To Be Loved - The Happy Fits
Rises The Moon - Liana Flores
Sunflower - Michele Leigh
Last Words Of A Shooting Star - Mitski (Someone on TikTok used this for a Sasha cosplay and it was nothing but pain)
Two Birds - Regina Spektor
I Know The End - Phoebe Bridgers
This Is A Life - Son Lux, Mitski, David Byrne (The movie Everything, Everywhere, All at once has a weirdly fitting title in this context)
Fred Astaire - Jukebox The Ghost
The Main Character - Will Wood
Wrecking Ball - Mother Mother
Little Dark Age - MGMT
The Loneliest - Måneskin

Happy Mother's Day.
“My mum did encourage me. Perhaps most of all by never discouraging me from anything I wanted to do. That was the good thing about her and my dad….” - George Harrison, The Beatles: The Authorized Biography (1968) “George tried to teach himself [the guitar]. But he wasn’t making much headway. ‘I’ll never learn this,’ he used to say. I said, ‘You will, son, you will. Just keep at it.’ He kept at it till his fingers were bleeding. ‘You’ll do it, son, you’ll do it,’ I said to him. I sat up till two or three in the morning. Every time he said, ‘I’ll never make it,’ I said, ‘You will, you will.’” - Louise Harrison, ibid “[I’m into] Hoagy Carmichael, who my mother was also into.” - George Harrison,  Billboard, December 5, 1992 “My mother once gave me a Lichtenstein print called Reverie, where there's a girl singing, and in the speech bubble behind her, it says, ‘The melody haunts my reverie’ which is a line from [Hoagy Carmichael’s] ‘Stardust.” It stayed on my wall for years.” - Dhani Harrison, The Line of Best Fit, October 20, 2023 “My mother’s father, Esquiel Arias, was a singer, and dad recorded him singing these great Mexican songs. My mother’s mother was related to Jorge Negrete, who was a film star and singer, I guess at the same level as Elvis or Bing Crosby in Mexico. Dad was a huge fan and had him on the jukebox at home. There’s a long line of musicians on both sides.” - Dhani Harrison, MOJO, November 2017 “Well, it’s the craziest coincidence that our mothers were both named Louise, and had the same favorite song — ‘María Elena.’ Very popular, oddly enough, by Los Índios Tabajaras back in the '60s. I don’t know how George’s mother heard it. In California, you know, that would not be a surprise. But the fact that she had that album, and my mother had this album, in these latitudes so far apart, and yet we had this song that sort of bound us all together, our families together.” - Olivia Harrison, BBC Radio, October 1, 2023 (x)

6 SONG SOUNDTRACK (PART 3 - BLUEGRASS)
Rules: If you're tagged, make a new post with links to music and/or lyrics describing the following: 1. An event that defines your character's past 2. How your character sees themselves 3. How others view them 4. Their closest relationship (platonic or romantic) 5. A major fight scene 6. End Credits song
This is a very special mixtape. Today would've been my dad's 69th birthday (nice, pops) and in honor of him, this playlist comes from his personal record collection. I cannot stress enough that this man was a deeply closeted bisexual from Chicago who rode a horse exactly once and hated it the entire time. He was the farthest thing from a cowboy you could possibly get, excepting, of course, the loads of pot he smoked (and dealt), but god damn did he love him some country music. So here's to you, Mongo. This is the soundtrack for the gayass cowboy stoner action comedy epic you'd insist you only like for the soundtrack … kinda like how the Mapplethorpe flower print in your living room was 'just because you liked the flower.' <3
Spotify || Youtube music ||Part 1 - Disco ||Part 2 - Post-Punk GothRock
1 THE DOOBIE BROTHERS - Steamer Lane Breakdown [instrumental]
It's always about the leaving with Zell - running away from 'home' in Ustalav was the first huge decision he made for himself. He looks back on leaving with fondness, it was a moment of true joy, a wild and boundless freedom he hadn't felt in a long time.
2 EMMYLOU HARRIS - Born To Run
Well, I take the chances, sometimes I made mistakes But you don't get nothing unless you take the breaks Living is dangerous as dynamite Sure it makes you feel nervous, but it makes you feel alright Makes you feel alright
He's ambitious, but not so much competing with anyone else as competing with himself; finding out who he really is. He's impatient to find out what living really feels like.
3 GREGG ALLMAN - Midnight Rider
And I don't own the clothes I'm wearing And the road goes on forever And I've got one more silver dollar But I'm not gonna let 'em catch me, no Not gonna let 'em catch the midnight rider
Zell's stories of being a wanderer travel as far as the rest of his more imposing reputation; the idea that he's a criminal on the run (not… 100% untrue), a vagabond and roving lover (also not 100% untrue he just didn't believe anyone else was as serious about him as he could have been about them) are romantic ideas that really catch on among the general public. He doesn't disabuse people of this, because he digs how cool it makes him sound and not like. A kinda pathetic loser who's terrified of commitment.
4 THE MARSHALL TUCKER BAND - Heard It In A Love Song
I'm the kind of man who likes to get away Like to start dreaming 'bout tomorrow today Never said that I love you even though it's so Where's that duffel bag of mine, it's time to go
I've always interpreted this song in a playful tone, like the singer has no intention of actually leaving. He's teasing the idea, but knows he's already so far gone that there's no way he's finding anything better down the road; after a certain point, Zell gets the same way. It takes the right kind of person to keep him off the road.
5 NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND - Foggy Mountain Breakdown [Instrumental]
Zell can't count how many bar fights he's gotten in when this exact song was playing on the jukebox but it's enough that he has something of a Pavlovian reaction to it now.
6 WILLIE NELSON - Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die* (Feat. Snoop Dogg, Kris Kristofferson, Jamey Jonson)
When I'd go, I'll have been here long enough So sing and tell more jokes and dance and stuff Just keep the music playing, that'll be a good goodbye Roll me up and smoke me when I die
One of the most exciting things about finding yourself and falling in love with life is accepting the end will come, and making sure it'll be a damn good party when it does.
*Our outsider track of the list - it came out a few days after Dad passed. This one's close to my heart for that reason especially. We did in fact smoke out and play this at his memorial, it was a wonderful goodbye. I'm getting high as hell at this very moment, in his honor.

you cannot even TALK about committing to the bit until you and your friends conceive of a fake broadway jukebox musical that would exist in an alternate reality based on a single offhand joke in a discord server, and then actually cast and script and partially orchestrate the musical, and then stage a dramatic reading of it on discord vc, and then make up fake in-universe memes and discourse and think-pieces and extended lore about both the musical and the ‘real-life events’ that inspired it, and then make up fake cast and fandom drama, and then you personally hand design, print, and distribute a dozen fake playbills and ticket stubs so detailed that they fool an industry producer. and THEN a real life actor that you cast in your fake musical actually sings one of the songs from your musical, and a half dozen other insane things you made up for your fake universe happen in real life, and you start to wonder if you guys committed so hard that you’re somehow blurring the lines between realities. only then have you truly and fully committed to the bit.
