MK reread the message for the 100th time, worried over the implications. Not only does Wukong rarely use the phone Mei got him, preferring to simply Astral Project any messages they need to do, but he'd never forbid their friends from joining in on training. Not since they all started training together while fighting against Azure, and Wukong had promised to not keep secrets anymore, what with the Samhadi Fire debacle. So the fact he's asking to keep it a secret is a big deal. Although, as Mei had pointed out when he showed her the message, the other monkey had never explicitly said to keep it a secret, just that he didn't want anyone except MK on the mountain for some reason, likely related to whatever he was going to tell him during training.

"Weird that he pointed out Tang in particular. Like, what did Tang of all people do to make Wukong not want him near!?"

MK didn't know. But as he flew towards the mountain he resolved to find out. The last thing he expected was to be met by a very familiar face when he landed. Or rather, four familiar faces that looked far too similar yet still different from his family to be a coincidence.

"Eeek! Demon boy!!" The Great Monk Tripitaka shrieked as he cowards behind Zu Baijie, Ao Lie, and Sha Wujing. All of them with weapons pointed towards him.

"Aye! Knock it off!" Wukong's voice roared out as he appeared in a flash of gold and red, standing between MK and the others, guarding him. "It's just my c- It's just my successor!"

The weapons immediately drop as the Pilgrims, the ACTUAL PILGRIMS from the STORIES, looked at Wukong incredulously. Zu Baije was the one to voice it.

"You!? A TEACHER!?"

"Yeah, I know!" Wukong snorted, as if hardly believing it himself, "But a lot can change in 1300 years and MK is a good kid. He deserves only the best, Piglet!"

"And... that's you?"

"No, but I'm the one he's got." Wukong's voice was flat, prompting MK to turn his attention to him. He yelped as a well placed kick hit his shin. "MK! What the heck!?"

"What have we talking about regarding self deprivation, Monkey King."

"What... I- that was for you!"

"Still applies!" MK folded his arms triumphantly as the audience began snickering at Wukong's flustered expression as he tried to find a comeback. Eventually his master concedes defeat with a chuckle, throwing his arm around MK in a side hug with a wide grin.

"Alright... well let's do introductions! Master, Ao Lie, Sha Wujing... Piglet. This is Xiaotian, or MK as he prefers, my student and successor. MK, the Pilgrims of the Great Journey... who somehow ended up here!"

"Oh wow! This is like a total dream come true!" MK was practically vibrating as he grinned, only to pause and turn to Wukong as a thought of occurred to him, Wait. Is this why you said Mr. Tang and the others shouldn't come over!?"

"Ah... yeah. That." The Monkey King scratched at his facial fur a but, looking guilty, "I have a good reason for it, MK. Jangles and the rest of these guys' next life in the reincarnation cycle. In all my years of living, I've never experienced a situation where a reincarnation has met their predecessor face to face. I wanted to be cautious in case, like, Jangles meeting Master causes the world to implode or something... again."

"Again?" Tripitaka raised a brow, glancing at Wukong with a concerned look, "Monkey, just what sort of-"

"L-look! We've have some crazy stuff happen recently, okay!? A crazy ice witch turned the mortal realm into an icicle, someone overthrew the Jade Emperor..."

"Somone did WHAT!?"

"And all of reality very nearly kinda sorta shattered when a pillar broke. MK and I managed to fix all of it."

"Yeah, we kicked monkey butt!" MK cheered along, "And only kinda got... emotional, physically, and mentally scarred along the way."

"Only kinda!?" Ao Lie tilted his head, curious, "Would any scarring at all not be considered a big deal?"

Wukong let out a laugh, slinging an arm around MK and the dragon's shoulders.

"Look, it's done and... maybe not over yet, but the main threat is passed. Let's jsut all settle down, I'll put some tea on, and we'll go from there. And maybe make a few calls to Sandy..."

That last part was muttered to himself as he herded the two into his house alongside the rest of the Pilgrims, telling them.not to mind the mess. After all, he shares the place with a bunch of wild monkeys and was still in the middle of cleaning up after Azure.

That is, huh. A lot more of a thought out response then what I was going for lol. I was like “what little rat does that remind you of” “the dude spying in the castle just now” when I rhetorically said “what shadowpeach does that remind you of” and you debunked it 😭 but since we’re talking about this now

There might be an opposite “order” power in contrast to Nines. If Pandora’s box is literal, MK is “hope” there’s a lot of other symbolism fandom likes the stereotypically portray into their ShadowPeach lol. But they have day/night too. Nobody has to think too hard to take inspo, and most shows don’t in my experience. Shout out to Ninjago and ATLA just mixing culture and language in a way that annoys people and placing it under one umbrella.

well i mean, lmk is already playing with the themes of order and chaos. except there Order was on the side of the antagonists while MK was Chaos (being the harbinger and all). we saw it with LBD and Azure and now with Nines

also, lmk’s order can be seen when it talks about Fate and Destiny and even the “story”, but in a way where they are shown as being too fixed and bureaucratic compared to the lessons being taught to MK and by MK which are “your fate (order) is your own and can only be determined by you.”

we had it with MK telling LBD “do you really think the universe cares about any of us?”

we had it when Macky told MK “if you tread the paths already carved for you, then you doom yourself into a self-fulfilling prophecy”

we have it even more explicitly in s5 from Wukong: “sometimes you need to carve your own path and fuck all the rest”

lmk is all about finding that balance between the chaos of your mind and the forced order of the world around you. our own daily ying and yang that we must balance, and that is why i don't place those themes with shadowpeach just because it takes away from the crux of the show where it’s original focus is on MK and how he changes and grow throughout the seasons

tbh i think their day/night themes with ying/yang are significantly minor. the major focus with them is the themes of betrayal and reconciliation and past haunts

These two scenes are connected

Sandy’s JTTW flashback/ Wukong and Macaque’s fight are connected.

Think about it. If Wukong and Macaque really were fighting, wouldn’t that mean that the Pilgrims would be close by to help?

It would also make sense from a timeline standpoint, since we know that the Pilgrims disappeared between the Samadhi Fire incident and DBK’s entrapment.

(Wukong disappeared after the entrapment, the Pilgrims seeminlgy being "dead" by this point).

And since Wukong and Macaque’s fight have no clear placement on that timeline, it wouldn’t be too far of a fetch to say that it happened between thoughs two things.

If it also did happen at this time, it would mean that at this point Macaque would have gained the “chaos powers” from the deal, since his shadow powers seem to be connected to his chaos powers, and we know he had them at that time

And since we don’t know how chaos powers fully work yet, this scene with Pigsy/Zhu Baije, could have been the result of an attack from Macaque.

Which would also explain why we even saw this scene in the first place! I mean, why else would they show this otherwise very random flashback?

And not only would it explain that, and where the fight is on the timeline, it would also explain what happened to the Pilgrims.

That the Pilgrims got hurt badly in the fight with Macaque.

Making people think that they all died, but chaos powers work in weird ways (ways we don’t understand yet), so they are still alive, yet with no memories of their past, and are now known as Sandy, Pigsy and Tang.

Ok, straight up? We know the Pilgrims and the Camel Ridge Trio fought each other. We know Wukong had "sent them to the Underworld" himself. But in Slow Boiled au there is no way in hell Wukong would have been allowed to participate since, while I'm not too sure of the timeline of events in the original book, I am fairly certain it was closer to the end of the Journey. Meaning Wukong had gone almost 16 years pregnant at that point.

And had probably lost Macaque by then.

So you can bet that when the Brotherhood members saw Wukong and started spitting insults and calling him a traitor, the Pilgrims are gonna be very pissed. Straight up, the reason Ao Lie wasn't depicted in the flashback wasn't because he wasn't there, it was because he had to be held back from literally murdering them for talking to Wukong like that.

Especially since by that point Wukong had probably, very much likely, told them about the Brotherhood and how he had surrendered and allowed himself to be captured explicitly to protect them so to have his sacrificed stomped into the dirt and spit upon by the very people he was trying to protect, the same people who PUT THE IDEA IF OVERTHROWING THE EMPEROR INTO WUKONG'S HEAD TO BEGIN WITH, well... let's just say they ain't gonna be nice.

In fact I know it likely didn't happen, but I would find it veeeery satisfying if Zu Baije punched Peng in the nose and broke his beak. Just... straight up knocking that overgrown pigeons teeth out because he was the worst offender and the first to actively start calling Wukong a traitor and claim he "mad this choice" when the guy literally did nothing to deserve that.

In the Slow Boiled AU; Wukong def lost Macaque around the same time as the Pilgrims wander into Lion Camel Ridge. He's distraught and doesn't want to lose anymore of his sworn brothers.

But the Brotherhood forces the other Pilgrims' hands with their words and actions.

Zhu Bajie: (*is spiteful and selfish towards Wukong for most of the Jttw*) The Brotherhood: (*is ungrateful towards their brother-in-arms' sacrifice and brand him a traitor*) Zhu Bajie: "HEY! THAT'S OUR LITTLE BIG BROTHER YOU'RE TALKING ABOUT!" (*pulls out rake*)

Each member of the Brotherhood is felled by a member of Wukong's new troupe. When the others were freed from the Scroll of Memory, the ones they targeted were personal.

[*The Brotherhood are being processed in the Underworld after they've been KO'd by the pilgrims*] King Yama: "Let'd get this out of the way since these three still have a trial to do for the coup they did some 500 years ago. Yellow Tusked Elephant; how did you pass?" Yellowtusk, in cuffs: "'Twas the Sand Monk that felled me. I had underestimated his strength and paid the price." King Yama: "And say you; Golden Winged Peng ?" Peng, in a bird cage: "That damned pig broke my *squawk!* jaw and hit me with a mud rake! I am disgusted by how undignified my end was!" King Yama: "And you Azure Lion - how were you defeated?" Azure Lion, in a divine cat cage: "I am embarrassed to say." Manjushri: "C'mon kitty, I saw what happened." Azure Lion: "...I was kicked in the head by the monk's horse when I went to strike Sun Wukong." YellowTusk & Peng: (*snickering laughter*)

Wukong is still horrified by how badly things went - but is comforted by the fact that his Pilgrim brothers were willing to leap to his defence. Master did not fight directly, but he told Ao Lie to take Wukong away from the area and placed a ward to protect the others. Almost as if Tripitaka was willing to die or kill to protect the student he had wronged...

Wukong still requires many a hug and a few hundred years to recover from all this.

Things go barely smoother in the Jttw Stone Egged AU since Macaque was still associated with the Brotherhood at the time, and him and Azure had a little kaiju battle over Wukong's choice.

The rake imagery goes back to the Yuan dynasty, as evidenced by this Cizhou ware ceramic pillow.

The kind of rake that he carries is similar to the "hand yarrow" (yundang (耘盪), a bamboo-handled rake with metal teeth designed to weed rice crops. It appears in The Book of Agriculture (Nongshu, 農書, 1313), which was written in response to the devastation that the Mongols had wrought on China during the Song and Yuan dynasties. So the featured tools were meant to help make life easier for farmers toiling away in the fields (Bray & Needham, 2004, pp. 59-60).

What's interesting is that published dynastic sources depict Zhu's rake differently. For instance, the original 1592 edition of JTTW illustrates it as a war rake.

And Mr. Li Zhuowu’s Literary Criticism of Journey to the West (late-16th-c. or early-17th-c.) depicts it as a toothed club:

Quick question just because I'm a little lost;

Isn't Wukong celibate? The specific following of celibacy that means that he, by virtue of his religion, can't get married or have relationships? I remember specifically that Baije had to leave behind his wife when starting the journey, and all of his attempts to pick up someone after were expressed by the other pilgrims to not be allowed. So aren't all the pilgrims not allowed to be in any romantic relationships whatsoever?

What you said is true! In JTTW the boys can't get married and honestly Wukong doesn't show any interest in women or anyone what I understood!

In this blog I have an AU where Wukong starts to develop romantic feelings for human named Sophie, who was yeeted in JTTW world by Guan Yin and Buddha from our world in hopes that the monkey would learn morals and understanding a gentle side of life. Tripitaka seems to have difficulties to keep Wukong in control so the gods thought that maybe a feminine touch would help and Sophie seems to check the qualities for what Buddha is seeking. Little did the gods (expect Buddha and Guan Yin) expecting that Sophie and Wukong would end up having romantic feelings.

So now for the answer you were seeking, anon. In my AU Wukong in the end of the journey refuses Buddhahood in order to have a chance to marry Sophie in the future. He was mentally prepared to stay as friends sense although they had feelings for each other, their relationship was not on that point to become official. Also Sophie wanted to go back to her world to hunk about staying WITH Wukong at Flower Fruit Mountain. Mind you they never did anything spicy in the journey but attraction on Wukongs end happened sooner compared to Sophies. So their relationship was slow build from friends to lovers in my whole timeline in this AU.

In my AU I want to explore Wukong being more egoistic, a bit of selfish and demanding. Hell even a bit of narcissistic bc he thinks he is the best. He choses violence easily and intimination. He is a King after all. But inside he has a good heart, but he has hard time showing it. He cares about the gang a lot and his people and he will grow through the journey (at some level).
