"I don't really remember her in tryouts..."

It's a bold faced lie that escapes Paige's lips as she smirks at the media, one that she has no doubt will get her that patented eyebrow-raise from Azzi whenever she sees (read: gets sent it by one of their teammates) that quote flying around social media.

But it couldn't be further from the truth and they both know it.

Because the truth is, Paige remembers everything.

She remembers watching the younger girl walk into the gym and she couldn't quite place it then -it took her off-guard really- but it felt like something was shifting.

She remembers the sheer look of determination on Azzi's face as she'd strode over to the rack of basketballs, ready to get in some shots right before tryouts started.

And she remembers the brief second when that determination had given away to nerves, the slight tremble in the brunette's hands as she'd palmed the orange ball.

But the hesitation was gone as fast as it came and Paige had been a little mesmerized by how in control of herself Azzi -the youngest of all the girls there- was and she remembers the flicker of admiration -one that has since become a fire- that had run through her veins because of it.

She remembers that was the first time she'd seen Azzi's gameday braids and she remembers feeling this playground-crush urge to pull on them, followed quickly by a faint blush on her cheeks because hello where did that come from?

She remembers the quiet confidence that Azzi had exuded when she'd stepped to the three-point line, taking in a deep breath, before raising her arms to shoot the ball.

Swish.

Nothing but net and yet Azzi had no reaction and the older girl remembers watching in marvel, albeit while pretending not to, as she'd continued around the three-point line, ready to shoot and make a three-pointer again.

And again.

And again.

And again.

And Paige remembers thinking that Azzi's shot was perfect.

But then -after she'd made god knows how many in a row and Paige distinctly remembers thinking this was her first time seeing someone who couldn't miss- something changed.

Azzi had finally reacted, finally smiled.

And Paige remembers thinking that perhaps she'd misunderstood the definition of perfect before. Because what was was more perfect than Azzi's shot, was her smile, bright and joyful and quirked at the edges to make her dimples pop.

(It isn't until a couple months later that Paige realizes just how many different types of smiles Azzi has and she thinks all of them are perfect really, but then there's this one that she has just for Paige, and that one, Paige thinks, might just be the definition of perfection itself)

The basketball she'd been holding had fallen ungracefully out of her hands -landing on the hardwood with a thud that echoed loudly despite the chaos of all the other girls getting up shots- and Paige remembers the crimson that had crept up her cheeks, when the sound of it had caused Azzi's eyes to wander over to her.

(Now that she thinks about it, the noise wasn't nearly cacaphonic enough to warrant getting Azzi's attention, but perhaps that's the thing about fate, maybe it was destiny for Azzi to look over at that exact moment)

Because beyond everything, this is what Paige remembers the most:

She remembers their eyes meeting -the first time that had foreshadowed an eternity of looking at each other- and she might have only been 15, might not have known much of the world or complicated emotions such as love, but she'd known one thing.

Paige remembers looking at Azzi -remembers Azzi looking back at her- and she remembers just knowing that this one moment, was gonna change their whole lives.

So this is my third time posting this list. It was flagged twice despite my labeling it and switching gifs around and my appeals to unflag it were denied. That isn't going to stop me from talking about the love scenes I loved, however, so rather than risk another flag, I'm simply going to link the posts I had originally chosen gifs from and tag their lovely creators.

We did not yet realize the significance of this scene when we were gifted it. Great's 4 minutes softened the edges of his first time with Tyme and turned it into something gentle and intimate and loving when his actual first time with Tyme was the exact opposite.

It was a beautiful scene and going back to rewatch it with the knowledge that none of it was real adds such an undercurrent of sadness to it.
