Some days, you sit in front of a blank page—planning layouts, careful about your handwriting, making sure your ink colors match and you hem and you haw.

Some days, you pick up a pen and just write.

To me, the latter is always more precious.

Capturing an imperfect snapshot of what’s on my mind at this exact moment—pen and paper style, is more important to me than piling pretty stickers on a page.

In any case, writing is better than not writing.

Sooo just sending this into the ether for brainstorming help. I’ve been meaning for a while now to make The Magnus Archives into a personal book collection, and I mean writing out every statement/episode in a journal by hand. But like…. how would that even work….

Like should I just type out all the transcripts in a font I like and print it out? Should I write it out? If so, should I do it on lined paper or fun parchment? If I opt for parchment how do I keep the lines straight? Should I write it in script format? Or should I give the different characters Different handwriting to differentiate them??? If I do that should I also write the dialogue in different color pen? What if I give Elias sparkly green gel pen?

want to start a commonplace book because i have so many empty notebooks so i looked through all of my notebooks to decide which one to use and none of them feel right and now i want to buy a new notebook to use for the commonplace book. do you see my problem.

a while back i gifted someone close to me a journal. small thing, for that year. i figured they'd use it to write down appointments, memories, and generally just keep their schedule organized.

i later found out they hadn't used it at all.

i wasn't angry, but i was a bit... disappointed? dejected? i guess. they had seemed to love it at the time, only to then never use it. i asked them why, and their answer was basically "the journal was so pretty, i didn't want to ruin it with my horrible handwriting." baffled me enough i didn't have a proper reply.

i think about that sometimes. about how i myself have got piles of art supplies - sketchbooks, pencils, markers, acrylics and oils and a dozen other things - all gathering dust in the corners of my room. about how i never use them, because they're fancy, and pretty, and costly, and i don't want to "waste them" on my drawings. on my simple, horrible little drawings.

about how i think my skills are just not good enough, to be worthy of those gifts. about how i keep waiting, years and years, for my skills to be good enough to be worthy of them.

and about how they'll keep gathering dust, because perfection will never come.

how do people feel when they see i have never used their gifts at all?
