“Just drop it.” Loki’s harsh voice resounded through the living area as the doors slammed into the walls. With long strides he crossed through the room, followed by Thor like a shadow.

“You can’t just ignore your duties!” Thor continued to nag.

“I am not ignoring anything.” Loki spat defensively.

“Then why won’t you look after your kin?” Thor gestured wildly around.

“Because they aren’t my kin!” Loki argued.

“Loki you were born with obligations that you must fulfil. Especially at these trying times for all of us. Your people need you.” Thor pleaded.

“I was born to die, Thor.” Loki corrected him bitterly, “We both know this, so don’t act like I was meant to be anything else to them than I am right now. They never needed me, and they never will.”

“Brother, you cannot believe the lies you were once told.” Thor's hand rested on Loki’s shoulder for a moment before Loki shrugged it off with a disgusted expression.

“Where is the lie when you have been tossed aside after birth because you weren’t worth being taken care of? Because you were born a runt, not useful for anything else than die.”

“Mother thought you were worth living.” Loki’s angered expression fell, a stoic mask taking over his face. His eyes scanned Thor’s face for a moment before he slightly shook his head.

“This conversation is over.” Loki choked out, storming past Thor towards the closest exit.

“Loki, please just listen to me for once.”

“I had to listen to you babble on for my entire life!” Loki quipped back, “I deserve a break from your endless chattering.”

“I just think-“

“Since when?” Loki stopped in his tracks, Thor almost running into him.

“Guys, what’s going on?” your voice made their heads turn towards the kitchen area where you had appeared from. With a concerned look on your face, you joined their space. 

“Nothing,” Loki grumbled. Heat rose to his head as shame spread in his limbs. How much of this conversation had you listened to?

“Loki won’t honour his duties as the rightful ruler of Jotunheim and he won’t listen to his much more experienced brother.” Thor babbled out their private quarrel, “They will die if no one intervenes, Loki.”

“Experience in what?” Loki mocked, intentionally ignoring Thor’s latter sentence, “Interfering in other people’s affairs?” 

“May I ask why you don’t want to go?” you interfered before the brothers would end up in a physical altercation. You squeezed between them to get them farther away from each other and granted both more space to their own to cool off.

“Because.” Loki tried to swallow his anger. He didn’t want the anger that was rightfully meant for Thor, to spill over to you.

“Because is not a reason,” Thor argued.

“No one asked you, Thor.” Loki seethed through his clenched teeth, shooting a death glare in Thor’s direction as he tried to push past you.

“Hey, stop it both of you,” you interjected again, grabbing Loki’s wrist to keep him by your side. With a soft voice, you addressed Loki directly, whose gaze was glued to the ground as he chewed on the inside of his cheek, “You don’t need to tell me why you don’t want to go… but would your mind change if someone accompanied you?”

Loki’s eyes flitted to yours. Your gaze was warm and calming, instantly soothing his temper.

“If I could help them, I would. But I could never endanger someone else to come with me.” he reasoned breathy.

“Endanger with what? Your attitude?” Thor jabbed. Loki scoffed under his breath but did his best to ignore his brother. He took a deep breath as he held your gaze, which helped immensely.

“And I think it’s pretty clear why I won’t take him with me.” he tried to sound jesting.

“I wouldn’t want to threaten your right to the throne if you’re worried about that.”

“Oh, I don’t worry about that.” Loki’s head whipped up to Thor, “I’m more worried about you starting another war.”

“Why can’t I just accompany you?” your words took him by surprise.

“You?” the brothers asked in unison.

“Yeah. Why not?” you shrugged, “I’m not a threat to any of the mentioned issues. And besides, I would miss you anyway if you were gone too long. And you know that I’ve been dying to see where you came from. So, if you’d decide to help them out I could support you actively.”

“I can’t take you with me.” Loki shook his head; all the colour of his face had faded.

“Why not?” you pouted disappointed.

“The weather in Jotunheim isn’t nothing like you’re used to. At this time of year, we have daily storms, the temperatures are below the freezing points for the entire day and the nights are deadly for you.” Loki rambled, “It’s simply too dangerous.”

“It is not.” Thor grimaced, “As long as you stay inside the building during the night, you have nothing to worry about.”

“Maybe a brute like you doesn’t have to worry.” Loki snarled.

“Oh, so does that mean I’m too dainty to visit Jotunheim? Do you really wanna go there?” you challenged him jokingly.

“That’s not what I meant, and you know that.” Loki scolded you with a glance.

“Then what is it?” Thor tried to coerce him to tell the truth.

“You two are insufferable sometimes!” Loki shook his head in defeat.

“So, is that a yes?” you bit your lip excitedly. Loki gritted his teeth, staring off into the air.

“If you stop pestering me!” he finally huffed. A squeal of delight escaped your mouth as you fell around his neck, hugging him quickly.

“I promise, you won’t regret it! You won’t even notice me.” you babbled eagerly. Loki nodded with a thin-lipped smile as he watched you bounce around. 

“We’ll leave in the morning,” he stated dryly.

“I’ll go pack then!” you quickly made your way towards your room.

“See, it’s not that hard. And with Y/N by your side, you’ll have someone familiar around.” Thor smacked his hand onto Loki’s shoulder with pride, “What’s this face? You can’t be mad at me for this, can you? After all, it’s your duty. What can you be so afraid of anyway?” 

Loki’s jaw was tightly clenched as it took every fibre in his body not to stab his brother right then and there.

‘Because now she will see who I really am.’ his mind screamed.

“If anything happens to her,” Loki turned to his brother harshly, his index finger boring into Thor’s chest, “even if just one hair of hers gets split, it will be on you. And I will make you make amends with it.”

In the blink of an eye, Loki vanished in a green cloud of smoke, leaving Thor behind by himself.

Jötun Design Party is a Marvel Loki fanmade character design contest, dedicated to encouraging artists to be more aware of racist visual shorthand to make a more inclusive fandom space for artists of color.

If your submission is found to rely on orientalist or otherwise racist imagery to make Loki seem more alien, more attractive, etc, your design will not be considered/your submission will be disqualified. I also encourage you to do your own research on the topic to ensure the design fits within the guidelines.

No AI generated or AI enhanced art. The design must be completely designed by you, not imags generation.

Your design must be created for the design contest entry. Modifying your old Jötun designs is allowed, but there must be significant changes to the design as to differentiate it from your previous works.

Entries will be judged based on design, not skill.

author’s note | it’s weird to write summer stuff when my city is fucking cold in the middle of april (this tropical country thing is bullshit). as always i do not really describe very detailed appearances, but Loki is for sure taller than the reader in both forms :)

It wasn’t that you hated the summer, your problem was only targeted at the whole “Summer Party” Tony decided to throw. To add to the problem the whole cooling system was…unavailable.

In the middle of summer.

Unfortunate events apart, you started the night smiling and dancing with Wanda and Sam, enjoying the refreshing drinks a bit too much so you had to sit down for a while or you could fall from all the spinning combined with the alcohol. But as you calmed a bit from all the rush you could notice how hot it was inside the room, how sticky your skin was and how uncomfortable you felt.

The good news was that you were great at sneaking out of the party, getting to the corridor with only one thing in your head: a cold bath.

The terrible news was that the bath did not solve a thing in your situation and as soon as you put on the most light pajamas you could find you were all sticky again because of that damn climate.

“What caused you to come up here, my love?” Loki asked.

You jumped, startled by his presence sitting on the bed with that perfect suit still on — you couldn’t even think about wearing something that thick.

“It's too hot in here.”

“So let me accompany you back there.” It was really simple in his head.

“I’m not talking about the room.” You grunted. “I’m talking about the compound as a whole.” You dropped yourself above the bed, not liking the feeling of the sheets under you.

Too warm for your taste.

“I have no idea how you’re handling this suit in this type of weather.” You looked at him with curiosity. “But you do look very good in it.”

“Darling, can’t you truly see how I manage to keep myself this collected?” You shook your head and Loki held a laugh. “I am a god.”

“Go fu…”

“Just something to lighten up the mood, forget it.” Loki said in between his laughs at your offended face. “I am a frost giant. I have cold skin in the most literal sense.”

“Oh.” Everything was placed together in your head, finally making a lot more sense. “You’re a lucky one aren’t ya?” You huffed, completely annoyed at how unfair it was.

“You look adorable like this.”

“Melting?”

“Annoyed.”

Your eye roll was enough of an answer.

“But you could do something to help me not melt.” You. Were. A. Genius. With your best pleading face and grabby hands you were ready to follow with the plan. “Cuddles, please?”

“I don’t see how physical contact is supposed to help.”

“When it comes from a frost giant…” You trailed off.

“What? No. I don’t think it is a good idea.”

“Loki, please.” You made your best pleading eyes. “I don’t feel well, just hug me, my giant.”

“No.”

“Why won’t you…?”

“I do not wish for you to see me like that.” Loki cutted your line, turning his back to you like he wanted to hide.

“Like what?”

“In my… most natural form. I don’t want you to see the monster under the surface.” His voice was breaking and you hated it.

You dragged yourself out of the bed, walking to his shrinking form and carefully placing your hands above where his were hiding his face. You slowly tugged them away to look inside his eyes seriously.

“I don’t want you to talk about yourself like this ever again. Do you understand me?” He looked away from your face and you repeated yourself to make sure. “Do you understand me?”

You didn’t notice the changing in his features right away from how focused you were on his eyes. Loki grew even taller, his skin grew colder and his eyes went red, his face and hands were all in a light tone of blue. You decided that was your favourite shade of the colour.

Your smile was not what Loki was expecting.

“Do you understand me?” You asked me one more time, this time lower but equally serious about the matter.

Now Loki nodded his head. He did it slowly, but he did.

“Now just jug me please because I’m all annoyed at the weather and you’re a personal air conditioner.” You begged, dragging him to the bed. “But an air conditioner that I really really love.”

"so like i know you're asgardian or jotun or frost giant or whatever it is you are," loki let out a chuckle at your words, "but you look like a normal human to me. what makes you different other than being ridiculously tall and devilishly handsome?"

you watched with pride as his smirk grew before he tossed his head back against the couch to think about all that made him him.

"well, for starters, i'm much stronger and more durable than average humans. faster, more agile, longer endurance, better reflexes, faster healing, longer lifespan. as i am partly frost giant, i can manipulate ice and am immune to the cold and obviously you already know all about the magic i can do," he told you, a slight boastful tone that some found annoying but you loved to hear it.

"your hands are huge too," you added while turning your head in his lap to get a better look at him.

"they aren't that big," he argued, but you were already pulling his hand to yours, placing yours on top of his to show him. "yours are just unnecessarily small."

"they are not. mine are normal. yours are not," you fought, a playful smile on your lips.

"perhaps, but don't act like you don't like the size of mine." loki barked out a laugh at your sudden timidness at the implication of his words. he leaned forward to press a kiss to your warm forehead and then nudged you to sit up. "come on, love. let's head to bed."

his hand found yours and helped pull you to stand. he began to walk away but your unmoving form halted his movements. he was on the precipice of asking what was wrong, but you spoke first.

“i wanna kiss you,” you whispered, needing him to lean down a little so you could reach him while on your tiptoes.

he let out a gentle chuckle before allowing you access to him. his arms wound themselves around your waist while his lips pressed passionately against your own. you let your arms wrap around his neck and he lifted you up, signaling with a small pat on your thigh for you to circle your legs around his hips. you did and felt him smile against your mouth.

The night had crept over the mountains of the stronghold Utgard, overshadowing it in darkness. You sat patiently in the dining hall, waiting for Loki to return from his last meeting with the council. You felt a bit nervous since you knew that he usually needed some time to compose himself after the discussion with the hard-headed council members.

It was the last night on Jotunheim before both of you were supposed to return to Midgard. You had convinced Loki to cook for him to celebrate the successful peace talks. Loki only had to endure one last diplomatic proceeding to regulate the newly formed governance that would oversee Jotunheim during his absence. But much to your and probably his chagrin too, it had dragged on longer than expected.

You were lounging on a chair as the tall doors slowly crept open with a creak. You felt uneasy and jumped up to your feet. Loki strode into the dining hall with quick strides, still in his Jotun form. His eyebrows were drawn together accompanied by a grim frown on his lips and a murderous glare in his eyes. With every step, his blue skin returned to his usual pale complexion and he seemed to shrink a few inches.

Your stomach turned as you remembered how your last conversation ended when he had come back frustrated from a conference that hadn’t gone as he wanted it to. But all the tension and your fears swiftly vanished as Loki’s eyes met yours and his mood seemed to change instantly, a soft twinkle returning to his sapphire eyes.

"You stayed up for me?" he remarked with an abashed smile.

"Of course!” you beamed at him, sheepishly biting your lip, “After all we had a dinner date... and you know me. I’m terribly nosy, I wanna hear everything!"

"It’s been a long day." he sighed, giving you a longing hug before he was ready to be led to the dinner table. As you ate Loki excitedly reported to you what the council had pulled off as a farewell.

Afterwards, both of you sat down by the fireplace together, your legs entangled as you talked about the departure in the morning and reminisced about what had happened over the last few months.

“Thank you for staying with me.” Loki softly rubbed over your legs, “I know I said it before but without you, I might’ve burned this whole realm to the ground.”

“You can be so dramatic sometimes,” you chuckled.

“I know.” he smiled to himself, “I'm just glad that you decided to lend me your company here. I wouldn't know how I would've managed it all by myself.”

“That's what friends are for, aren’t they?” you smiled sweetly at him.

"You're right, we're friends..." he stared off into the distance. It seemed like he had something else on his heart but he just smiled when he noticed your quizzical gaze.

“What?” you asked him with an unsure smile but Loki only shook his head.

"Nothing. Let’s head to bed." he waved you off, "We'll have a long day tomorrow."

“The last night on Jotunheim... not gonna lie, I think I’m gonna miss it a little bit.” you huffed with a frown.

“Are you sure you'll miss Jotunheim? Or is it something else?" he inquired cheekily.

"What are you trying to imply, Mr. Mischief?" you raised your eyebrow sceptically.

"Nothing." he feigned innocence, "But as I recall, you haven't slept alone in your bed for a single night in over 3 months."

"Are you trying to bring up the possibility that I might miss you, a cover-hogging nightmare, sleeping next to me?" you snickered, "As if it wasn't you who came to my chambers enquiring 'Can I sleep here? Just for tonight.' and insisted that we never sleep apart ever since then?"

There was this look in his eyes again as he examined your face, his facial expression somewhere between thoughtful and amused.

"I don't like it when you have a point." Loki grumbled, "But you didn't answer my question."

"I'll miss you as much as you'll miss me," you remarked with a smirk.

"A lot then." he held your gaze. You inclined your head, surprised by his quick return.

"Did you just try to make me admit something by admitting it yourself?" you asked tentativly.

"Depends how you answer." he licked his lips.

"You're really something." you shook your head impressed.

"I think one would call it smooth." he scrunched his nose as he drawled his words with a grin, "So?"

"So let's go to bed." you gently took his hand, pulling him behind you towards his chambers.

When you moved into the tower, the person who became your best friend came as a complete surprise to everyone. Bucky Barnes was the sweetest, kindest guy you’d ever met. And extremely protective. Whenever the two of you went to the park or store or something else, he would smile at you like you were his world and then proceed to glare death at anyone else.

Contrary to what most would expect though, neither of you were truly attracted to each other. You had kisses Bucky once and your reaction still makes you both laugh. You immediately scrunched your nose and yelled. “Yuck! That was a mistake!”

“Agreed,” Bucky frowned. “I mean I love you but-”

“Siblings?” You offer. Bucky nods vigorously and you laugh. “Okay, bro,” You grin.

“No, I will be your big brother but I will not be your bro,” He insists. You laugh again and agree. “Now come here, I still want my cuddles while we watch the movie.”

Months later, Tony announces that the Asgardian brothers will be returning. You’d heard about them, of course, but they’d been off-world for quite some time taking care of whatever princely duties they had. You had never had the chance to meet them so you were quite excited about their return.

Late one night you had wandered out to the kitchen to have a midnight snack. “Who are you?” A strange voice asked. Turning around you found yourself face to face with none other than the God of Mischief himself, Loki.

“Y/N,” You say nervously. “My name’s Y/N. I just joined the team.”

“Oh, well, welcome,” He says. You smile tightly and run off, leaving your snack behind. He watches you run down the hallway and dash into Bucky’s room. He shakes his head confusedly, wondering what that was about. You spent the rest of the night lamenting to Bucky about your giant crush on Loki and how you were sure you'd never be able to speak to him normally.

Over the next few months, you eventually learn how to talk to Loki without blathering on like a crazy person. Or at least not much. And eventually, Loki learned to his great relief, that you and Bucky were not dating. When he finally asked you out on a date you were beyond elated. Bucky, of course, was helping you get ready.

"I'm so nervous," You admit to him, burying your face in your hands.

"Ah ah ah!" Bucky scolds. "No smudging the makeup. You'll be fine, just be yourself."

"But what if-"

"If he doesn't like you the way you are he's the wrong guy. No matter how handsome he is."

"Thank you, Bucky," You sigh.

"Anytime, doll. Now get going." You walk out of your room and straight into Loki.

"Oh! I'm so sorry!" You blush, checking Loki's suit in case you got makeup on it.

"No harm done," He replies, taking your hand. You smile up at him and are about to walk off with him when Bucky clears his throat, leaning on the doorframe of your room.

"You may be a god, Asgardian, Jotun, I really don't care. If you hurt her? You will have to deal with me."

"Understood," Loki replies, genuinely fearing the supersoldier somewhat.

“No go have fun,” Bucky smiles, waving you off. The date went wonderfully, the two of you laughing and smiling the whole night.

"Thank you, Loki," You say, walking back to your room.

"I'm hoping we can do this again," Loki says, smiling back at you.

"Absolutely! Just name the time and place," You reply happily.

"Wonderful," Loki says. "For now, I shall bid you goodnight." He kisses you softly on your lips before bowing ever so regally and returning to his own room.

Over the next few months, as you are dating, Loki notices something that confuses and upsets him somewhat. If you are relaxing around the Tower, having a movie night with just him, at the team's family movie night, or other recreational activities, you are often spotted wearing one of Barnes' sweatshirts.

Although Loki trusts you and your insistence that Bucky is nothing more than a good friend and older brother to you, he still can't help feeling jealous. Jealous that it is James' clothes and not his. Although, he admits to himself, his wardrobe can leave much to be desired in the way of coziness. Looking is his closet, Loki sighs as he sees his Asgardian armor, Asgardian formal wear, and a variety of black Midgardian Gucci suits, but no cozy loungewear. He had his silk pajamas, but he doubted you were far along in your relationship enough to share sleepwear.

You too have noticed a change in Loki's demeanor when you wear one of your best friends sweatshirts. Finally, you decide to approach him about it.

"Loki, please be honest with me. Does it really bother you that I wear Bucky's sweatshirts?" You ask. "If you don't want me to, I won't. Really. I don't mind."

Loki just shrugs and turns away to get a cup of tea, thereby closing the conversation with no real answer. The next few weeks, you continue wearing the sweatshirts and observe Loki's reaction. You can't help but find it adorable when he gets annoyed and the bridge of his nose crinkles. However, you realize you can't do this to him much longer. Loki obviously doesn't want to talk about it so you return the sweatshirts to Bucky.

"Is he really that jealous?" Bucky asks as he puts away his sweatshirts.

"You have to remember his background, Buck," You sigh. "He's always been out done by his brother, looked down upon by his father, and even his mother's gone now. I think he just needs validation. His first Midgardian relationship after all," You laugh.

"Okay," Bucky chuckles and nods. "I can understand that. I may not be from another realm but I have my own depressing backstories."

"Thank you," You reply, relieved.

"So what are you going to do now to keep warm," He asks you with a smirk.

"Well I can try cuddling up with him more but he is naturally cool so," You laugh quietly. "I'll figure it out. He's worth it though. That's for sure."

Unbeknownst to either of you, Loki was listening outside the door. A few weeks later, when you return to your room from your running some errands, you find Loki there waiting for you with a large box on his lap.

"What's this?" You ask, furrowing your brow in confusion. "I didn't forget something, did I?"

"You didn't," Loki assures you. "Open it."

"Oh!" You smile, taking off the lid. "You got me sweatshirts?" You grin.

"I consulted with Barnes," He says, looking away a bit embarrassed. "We settled things between us and he helped me. He explained to me that women like oversized sweatshirts because they're more comfortable and that they especially like it if they smell like a man, especially their boyfriend if they have one."

"That is true," You giggle. Loki smiles at you and nods towards the box again. You slowly look back at it, sniffing it. "Wait." You faceplant into the box, taking a deep breath. "Loki! It smells just like you!" You laugh.

"I took the liberty of sleeping in each one for a few days and I enchanted it so the smell would never wash off," He explains. "And now that I say it out loud it's quite weird I suppose," He murmurs.

"No, Loki! The fact that you willingly slept in 'ugly' Midgardian clothes instead of those beautiful Asgardian silk pajamas I know you own, is actually really sweet."

"I'm glad you think so," He said, standing up. "Now you won't have to be cold! You have your very own set of sweatshirts." You give him a smile but it's forced. "What's wrong, darling? Did I forget something? Did I do something wrong?"

"No, nothing wrong, I'm just being silly."

"Tell me, then, what is it?"

"Well, half the fun is stealing them from your boyfriend," You say. "But I don't mind keeping them here. I know you don't like them very much but-"

"You cannot tell this to a soul," He interrupts. "But I quite liked them," Loki grins. You laugh and shake your head.

"Maybe you should add 'human' to your list," You tease. He rolls his eyes and smirks.

"I have a suggestion. I would be willing to store them in my closet and when we have our own little movie nights, I suppose I could wear one. And I suppose, if at some point in the evening and I were to get too hot in it, I could leave it on the couch while I go to the kitchen to make us more popcorn. And I suppose if I came back to find you wearing it, I would not be averse to that."

"I like how you think, Loki," You smile. You give him a hug but shiver. "You're cold," You giggle. He grabs one of the sweatshirts and helps you put it on.

"All better?" You nod happily and lean into his side, wrapping your arms around his waist.

"Thank you, my dear frost giant, for keeping me warm."

Follow Loki in this decadent retelling full of magic, love, myth, humor, and betrayal as he faces the new challenges of fatherhood and is forced to choose between his family or his own selfish pursuits. --- Review: This was a fun read for me. In my eyes, A.B. Frost captures the mischievous spirit of the Norse trickster deity Loki very well, with a lot of humor - and he is depicted as a very queer character, I love that. What I didn’t like about this aspect was that basically all the deities called him a pervert, for things like wearing a dress and makeup and such. This got repeated a bit too often for my taste. I guess this novella is more easily accessible if you have some knowledge of the Norse myths, because there are lots of details and hints which might get lost in the text, if you have never read Norse mythology.
