I finally got around to reading Lea Svendsen's book, Loki and Sigyn: Lessons on Chaos, Laughter, and Loyalty from the Norse Gods. While there were a few very minor things I disagreed with, it's something I think all Heathens and Loki-curious folks need to read. I wish there was a tad more on Sigyn, but there is just so much to say about Loki that it's not at all surpising that he dominates the text a little lol. It was such a good book.
But I didn't really come here to give a book review. I came here to share a few entries from the glossary. Because the way Lea describes a few things is just...😙🤌
Tumblr media
The last sentence got me 🤣
Tumblr media
Poor Thor, but not incorrect in my experience 🤣
Tumblr media
This was just right on the money for me. He does naturally share more physical traits with Loki than the character does. 🤣 I am also of the belief that Loki had a hand in getting Tom cast. If someone is gonna play a character bearing his name (to the point where their visage is basically synonymous with his name), they gotta be handsome and charming and play the character sympathetically. Personally, I think Tom fits that bill lol
On a related note, I did appreciate Lea's lack of disdain for Marvel. It's not always accurate to the lore or who the deities are, sure, but it's bringing people (myself included) to the deities. I think they generally appreciate that, as long as folks are able to move beyond the Marvel material. And as I've said before, they sometimes find ways to work themselves into that material, whether the writers/creators believe in them or not.
Anyway, highly recommend this book!

College work, I finally finish it! I drew a children's book illustration about Thor's stolen hammer because it's one of my most favorite Norse Mythology story.
I didn't color all pages :''') but I'm still proud of these works. Here's a bunch of sketches and process below

Funny tidbit: I don't know how my people managed to make a slang term out of Loki's name (or at least it sounds like it!) but it happened!
Over here, Loki is known as Loke (pronounced loo-keh). My friends and I, along with the youths in our community, speak a sociolect together. We use the word "loke" when we want to describe someone who is loafing around, like just idly going places or hanging out/dawdling, lol. "Å loke rundt" means "to loaf around". Don't know the full story behind how the word came to be in modern times but I caught myself thinking about this a lot lol. Imagine telling people "Bro, stop loki-ing around!"
I could see angrboda saying this as a cute little pun and he’d just laugh at it 😭😭

That's not going to happen, Sig. I'm never going to just fall out of love with you. How could I? How am I supposed to find someone like you? Someone who cares for me the way you do? No one else has, maybe ever. You're my home. I love you, and the rest will come together; it has to. We could take on all of Asgard, you and I.

Ok, I think I have to open my mind up a little here and could use y'all's help.
I have expressed on here my dislike of Genevieve Gornichec's The Witch's Heart. I got to just about exactly halfway through (they had just come to take away the kids), and I was so frustrated with it that I couldn't bear to finish it. I know Loki is not the focus of the book, but her portrayal of him was so deeply antithetical to my understanding of him that I simply could not enjoy it. Not to say that fictional interpretations have to be 100% "true" to who they are, especially since a lot of people writing these fictions aren't practicing Heathens/Norse Pagans, for me to be able to enjoy them. But this was so far off that I couldn't set it aside and enjoy the story.
I wanted (still want, really) so desperately to enjoy this thing that so many people seem to enjoy. I deeply appreciate the author choosing Angrboða as the lead and giving her more attention. She absolutely deserves it. I would truly love to see more of that. I just couldn't get past my anger at someone, once again, making Loki out to be some cheating, neglectful bastard that doesn't care about his kids. I'm beyond over that trope for him. Gonna need some more creativity from storytellers on that front.
So anyway....because I want to better understand people's feelings about it and form a more fully informed opinion about the book, what is the back half of it like? I don't mind it being spoiled at all (though I guess PM if you're going to do that for the sake of others. To be frank, knowing what actually happens might be the only way I consider picking it up again.) Tell me what about the resolution of the story that resonates with you and why. Do you share my feelings about Loki's portrayal but were able to get past them/does it get better? I don't want to keep saying I hate this book based solely on the first half, but depending on where it goes, I don't know that I really want to take the time to continue reading it, either.
I know this is a Hot Take™️ opinion. I am not trying to hate on anyone who enjoys this book. I appreciate good faith responses and keeping this discussion civil even when we disagree. (It's ok if we do.) I seriously appreciate any feedback. ❤️

So I bought this book recently (great read btw), and the guy on the cover totally makes me think of Ewan Mitchell, specifically as Aemond Targaryen. Anyone else see it, or is it just me? Like when I got it in the mail, and opened it up, my brain sorta just lagged. And I was like, Aemond is that you?
Also the book is written from the prospective of Loki (Norse mythology Loki), and like I said it's a great read. I highly recommend it.

‘That was the thing about Loki. You resented him even when you were at your most grateful, and you were grateful to him even when you hated him the most.’
Can’t help but think about Mobius, stood there outside Don’s house, watching the kids run around as he can’t help but hate Loki for leaving him but also thankful that something so special could be saved.

Hey!! I noticed that you’re also a Sigyn fan so I wanted to tell you about this book I’m currently reading on her.
Tumblr media
Yes, I am a huge fan of Sigyn! And I have in fact read the first book by Cat rector.
I'll have to admit her version of Sigyn is definitely creative and something else from what I have seen before, she did a wonderful job with her versions of the characters.
Enough to leave an impact on me like: The witches heart. Which means I truly enjoyed it, but it was also a rollercoaster of emotions like she warned, so you're in for a ride!!
I am currently on the second book of the series that focuses on Loki!! :D
