The idiom ”Shot in the dark” means “an attempt to guess something when you have no information or knowledge about it.” ⠀ People have been using the term “shot” in reference to “attempt” since the mid-19th century; in Joseph Hewlett’s 1841 comedy Peter Priggins, the College Scout, we read: “After waiting for a little while, Ninny made a shot, and went so near the mark.” The origin of the idiom “a shot in the dark” isn’t specifically known; George Bernard Shaw was first to use it in print in the February, 1895 Saturday Review: “Never did man make a worse shot in the dark.”⠀ Example 1: It was really just a shot in the dark when I tried to fix our washing machine, but I was actually able to get it working again on my first try!⠀ Example 2: You need sound financial advice and a strong plan if you're going to start your own business — you can't just take a shot in the dark.

COUNTRY OF HOTELS - Review

DISTRIBUTOR: Terror Films

SYNOPSIS: Should you end up in room 508 in this mysterious, nameless and fetid hotel, you will find yourself in an alternate reality, akin to the “Twilight Zone,” with an unseen threat lurking behind the walls and in the air ducts. COUNTRY OF HOTELS presents five tales of lost souls who enter room 508 and are confronted by the darkness in their lives.

REVIEW: COUNTRY OF HOTELS is an entry into the subgenre of sinister hotels/rooms such as the Cohen Brothers’ “Barton Fink,” David Lynch’s “The Hotel Room,” or the grand-daddy of them all “The Shinning” (pick your adaptation).

Having said that, COUNTRY OF HOTELS establishes an atmosphere and a tension that it sustains throughout. They achieve it through a compilation of performances, production values and camera work. The wallpaper in room 508 appears to be a homage to the carpet design from the Overlook Hotel in Kubrick’s “The Shining.” There are a lot of dark tones and hues that add to the oppressive feel of the film. Given the tight spaces, the edits are sharp with an organic feel to the movement. Christos Fanaras’s score was okay was okay, but the film’s sound design adds more to the overall atmosphere to the film. For all the room’s production design and art direction, the rest of the locations are lacking and feel makeshift, especially the check-in/front desk area.

The stories tend to be superficial in only addressing the particulars of the situation the viewer is presented with. The characters at the center of each tale do not present as a full person, never feeling there is a chance for redemption. Much like a classic EC Comic tale, such as “Tales From the Crypt” or “Haunt of Fear,” these characters wear their damnation on their sleeves. The TV in the room serves as a source of torment, sometimes feeling a bit more unrealistic than surreal. I enjoyed the adult themes. Still, the writing does not offer any satisfying conclusions or any speculation about the hotel or its staff to sustain the viewer’s curiosity past the credits.

The performances are interesting, frequently intense, but limited. There is no breathing room to allow the viewer to connect with the character and potentially feel for them. There is a lot of energy and a perspective of that character in that moment, which kept me at a distance, feeling like a spectator at a “peep show.”

Julio Maria Martino’s & David Hauptschein’s COUNTRY OF HOTELS is an interesting adult film about not nice people who find themselves in a surreal hotel room that challenges them. There are many good things about the film that make it worth a watch. I don’t feel the dark humor works and by the end I did not feel anything for these characters, even the hotel staff.

What is an iPod? iPod Models & Prices

iPod is a multi-purpose portable media player with built-in storage. iPod,  Apple Inc. It is a registered media player manufacturer brand operating within the company.

Like a classic portable MP3 player, the iPod allows the user to save songs to the internal memory of the device and listen to it anywhere. Since the battery (battery) life varies according to the model, the uninterrupted use times are different. It can be charged via FireWire and USB connection cables. The iPod can also be used as an external (portable) storage unit apart from a music player function.

There were many portable media players (MP3 Players), especially the Walkman developed by  Sony , which was very popular in the 1990s and created a trend in the world  . However, the samples on the market at that time had problems such as a dysfunctional user interface or huge size and weight. Apple CEO  Steve Jobs has developed a new generation device free of all existing problems in portable media player devices.

With the first iPod version introduced in 2001, Apple made a rapid entry into the portable media player/MP3 music player market with a user-friendly interface, stylish and portable design. In early versions, the user could use the FireWire cable for file transfer  and later the USB connection cable. With the iPod Touch model, file transfer has been made more practical thanks to the wireless connection support. It can also connect with Apple’s music platform iTunes.

Apple has the world’s best-selling digital media player, with sales of over 173 million iPods in 2008.

There are 4 iPod series that differ from each other in terms of storage, dock, design and user interface features. Each series is divided into different generations according to hardware and software features.

iPod history

The first version of the iPod was launched in October 2001 with the slogan “1000 songs in your pocket”. Within the scope of the project, Apple has made an agreement with Fuse Systems, which is working in this field, as an “independent contractor”. A partnership has been established between Fuse Systems and  PortalPlayer regarding the device software  . These developments marked the first time that Apple’s first music player was developed externally in terms of hardware and software components.

During the development process, the name “iPod” did not exist yet. The project was nicknamed “P-68”. After the software and engineering of the device was completed, the first prototype was revealed. The first prototype was developed in less than a year. The eponymous name of the iPod is considered to be “Vinnie Chieco”. Although it was decided to present the product to the user with the iPod name, a problem was encountered in the registration of the brand. Because the iPod “was registered as a trademark by the US Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO). The iPod brand was registered in 2000 by Joseph N. Grasso, an internet kiosk manufacturer.

Determined to have ceased operations in 2001, Grasso transferred all its legal rights to Apple Inc from the re-registration of the trademark . It was only in 2003 that the commercial registration of the iPod brand was completed to Apple Inc.

In the USA, the iPod name was registered as a trademark by an office furniture manufacturer named Chrysalis Corporation of Sturgis in 1991.

After the first version was released to the user, the user interface software has been evolved by Apple in the new versions. Font, theme and menu system transitions have been converted from the first version’s external dependency/different line to the classic Apple and iOS software standard.

The iPod 4G model, released in 2004,  is a collaboration between Apple and HP (Hewlett-Packard). The model is offered for sale by HP. The HP logo is located on the back of the device.

Apple worked with the world-famous Irish rock band U2 for the special edition of the iPod 5G model released in 2006. The back of the model has the signature of U2 members. The iPod 5G special edition is also known for using a different color (black) than the classic metallic color on Apple’s iPod line. In addition, for the first time in iPod devices, video storage (33 minutes limited) feature was also included.

Since 2001, Apple has introduced model series such as “iPod Classic”, “iPod Mini”, “iPod Nano”, “iPod Shuffle” and “iPod Touch”. Since July 2017, only the iPod Touch series has been sold in the Apple store.

Differences between iPod Touch and iPhone

iPod Touch and iPhone are related Apple products. However, this relationship is not limited to existing similarities in terms of design. Apple CEO Steve Jobs explained the close relationship between these two products of the company with an assessment that the iPod is an exercise for the iPhone.

iPhone and iPod Touch use the same operating system. It has many important functions such as multi-touch screen, Wi-Fi connection. There are sharp differences that distinguish them from each other as well as these equality/similarities in software and application band. The iPod Touch is a media player and personal digital assistant product, while the iPhone is in the smartphone class. 

The most obvious difference between them is that internet access on the iPod Touch is limited to the Wi-Fi connection only. iPhone, on the other hand, can access the Internet with a cellular data connection (mobile network connection) apart from the Wi-Fi network. It also includes the GSM network, that is, network support feature on iPhone devices.

There are also differences between iPhone and iPod Touch in terms of hardware components such as internal storage capacity, processor, RAM and screen sizes.

iPod, the first version of which was released in 2001, has been developed in 5 different models. Each model, with its different generations, included Apple’s development in both hardware and software.

iPod Classic

iPod classic 1st generation; It was launched in 2001. It has 5 GB and 10 GB storage and Mac OS 9 and 10.1 operating system support.

iPod classic 2nd generation (July 2002); It has 10 GB and 20 GB storage options. It has Windows 2000 and Mac OS 1.01 operating system. “Musicmatch” software is used to run on Windows.

iPod classic 3rd generation (April 2003); 10, 15, 20, 30 AND 40 GB storage options are available. It has USB charging feature. It has support for Windows 2000 and Mac OS 10.1.

iPod classic 4th generation was released in 2 different models. It was released in October 2006 with 30, 40 and 60 GB support. In June 2005, the 2nd Model with color screen feature and 20 and 60 GB storage options was presented. Both models have support for Mac OS 10.2 and Windows 2000.

iPod classic 5th generation (October 2005); It has 30, 60 and 80 GB storage and Mac OS 10.3 and Windows 2000 support. It has the largest screen and video playback feature ever developed.

iPod classic 6th generation (September 2007); It has 80, 120 and 160 GB storage and Mac OS 10.4 and Windows 2000 support.

iPod Mini

iPod Mini 1st generation (January 2004); It has 4GB of storage. It has support for Mac OS 10.1 and Windows 2000. It has USB and FireWire connectivity option. In addition to the minimal design, there are 5 different color options.

iPod Mini 2nd generation (February 2005); 4GB and 6GB storage options are available. It has support for Mac OS 10.2 and Windows 2000. The screen brightness has been increased compared to the previous generation. The 8-hour battery life in the first version has been increased to 18 hours.

iPod Nano

iPod Nano 1st generation (September 2005); It has been developed with the option of 2 and 4 GB storage (later 1 GB option was added). It has black and white color options. It supports Windows 2000 and Mac OS 10.3 operating system.

iPod Nano 2nd generation (September 2006); It has been developed with an aluminum case, 2, 4 and 8 GB storage space and 6 different color options. It has USB connection support. It supports Mac OS 10.4 and Windows 2000 operating systems.

iPod Nano 3rd generation (September 2007); It has been developed with a chrome-plated back case and 4 and 8 GB storage space. It has switched to Windows XP operating system and Mac OS 10.4 support is available. The model with 2 inch QVGA display technology offers up to 24 hours of uninterrupted listening to music.

iPod Nano 4th generation (September 2008); It has 4, 8 and 16 GB memory options with an aluminum-coated casing. There are 9 different color options. It has Windows XP and Mac OS 10.4 operating support with USB connection support. It has accelerometer (shaking and horizontal position) technology.

iPod Shuffle

iPod Shuffle 1st generation (January 2005); It has a capacity of 512 MB and 1 GB with flash memory technology. It is the iPod model without display. It has support for Windows 2000 and Mac OS 10.3. It has the capacity of 12 hours of uninterrupted listening to music.

iPod Shuffle 2nd generation (September 2006); It is a screenless model with minimal dimensions. It has 1 GB and 2 GB capacities with 4 different color options. There is support for Windows 2000 and Mac OS 10.3.

iPod Shuffle 3rd generation (March 2009); It is presented with 2 color options and 4 GB storage space. It has USB connection support and support for Windows XP, Mac OS 10.4.

iPod Touch

It is the only iPod series produced and sold by Apple. The previous iPod series has been discontinued in Apple stores. It complies with the hardware specifications of Apple’s iPhone smartphone technology. It has touch screen technology, wireless internet connection (Wi-Fi) and graphical user interface features.

In the iPod Touch series, which is still in production, 7 generations have been developed since 2007. iOS version update support is also provided on the 7th Generation iPod Touch model.

iPod Touch 1st generation (September 2007); Available in 8 and 16GB capacities (32GB was added in 2008). It has  ARM11 620 Mhz processor and 128 MB  RAM . It has USB 2.0 connection support. It has Mac OS 10.4 and Windows XP operating system support.

iPod Touch 2nd generation (September 2008); It has 8, 16 and 32 GB capacities, ARM11 620 Mhz processor and 128 MB RAM. It has USB 2.0 connection, Mac 10.4 and Windows XP operating support. It has a battery life of up to 36 hours of audio and 6 hours of video playback.

iPod Touch 3rd generation (September 2009); It has 32 GB and 64 GB memory, ARM Cortex-A8 833 Mhz processor and 256 MB RAM. It has support for USB 2.0, Mac OS 10.4 and WinXP.

iPod Touch 4th generation (September 2010); It has 8, 16, 32 and 64 GB memory, ARM Cortex-A8 Apple A4 800 MHz processor 256 MB RAM support. Supports iOS 4.1 mobile operating system.

iPod Touch 5th generation (September 2012); It has ARM dual-core Cortex-A9 Apple A5 1 GHz processor, 512 MB RAM. 16, 32 and 64 GB storage options are available. Supports iOS 6.0 mobile operating system.

iPod Touch 6th generation (July 2017); It has 16, 32 and 64 GB capacities and 128 GB flash storage. It has a 1.4 GHz 64-bit dual-core ARMv8-A “Typhoon” processor, 1 GB RAM and iOS 8.4 operating system.

iPod Touch 7th generation (May 2019); It has 2 GB RAM, 1.64 GHz 64-bit Dual-Core processor and 32, 128 GB capacity and 256 GB flash disk storage.
