Also not only did Mina make the documents, she backed them up! Dracula BURNED THEM. But she had made them in triplicate.
She is always one step ahead. Like a chess master.
My girl was doing cartwheels around that vampire fool so hard that his only move was to give her nightmares on earth, and religious trauma in an attempt to stop her...
And Mina STILL ended up doing cartwheels around stupid Dracula even with the host mark on her forehead via backing up documents, and turning him into a fucking gps to guide everyone so they could turn him into ribbons.

Honestly I feel for Sam but serves him right.
Even if we ignore the potential intermingling of the web or any other other spooky strings that are likely being pulled, there's a lot to unpack here.
I wouldn't say Sam "deserved" it, but Alice tried warning him for months. This is what he gets for sticking his nose in places it didn't belong.
Did I say the same thing about Jon in TMA? Yes and no. Obviously there isn't a story without someone doing something dumb, but I think Jon's situation and Sam's situation are a little different. Jon was an idiot, yes, but he (and everyone else around him) were forced to go in completely blind. He had no idea what he was doing and didn't have any warnings or help at all except from his creepy boss with ulterior motives.
Sam also went in blind, but he was warned several times by several people including the eldritch computer to stop and turn around. He could have avoided this if he just returned Alice's calls or looked at her messages.
But nooooo he had to poke around with his little crushy crush and get himself thrown into a portal to what we can only assume is the TMA universe. Serves him right.

Thinking about how Susanna Clarke takes the idea of lost knowledge and plays with it from the very beginning of Jonathan Strange and Mr. Norrell. From Norrell's (implied) culled books, to the aged magician whose "voice was rather weak and no one had leisure just then to discover what he was saying" (ah but the Narrator remembers his passion), to later events in the book, where knowledge thought lost can be recovered in a variety of ways. Of course, the major lost knowledge is magic itself, but not all examples are explicity magical. Clarke reminds us of how easy it is for knowledge to get lost - perhaps it only ever existed in the mind of one person who is long dead, perhaps a small community held the knowledge but failed to pass it on, perhaps it was written down but later destroyed - and then she offers us a tantalising glimpse of a world where it is possible to recover at least some of it.

if anyone was wondering, damijon in my mind is:
10-year-old Jon develops a little crush on the older Damian. Jon age-up happens, it’s been like 6 years now, he does NOT have a crush on Damian anymore. BUT, Damian starts to see Jon in a new light. Damian develops feelings for him without knowing, and he falls HARD. Damian doesn’t realize that what he feels for Jon is love for the LONGEST time. He gets to wait even longer, though, cause Damian has to live with these feelings for the rest of his life!! Yay!!!

Imagine Martin, working as a grocer in a small, quaint seaside village in 2024. The biggest buzz of news is that someone bought the cottage and the lighthouse on the edge of town. No one has seen the new owner's face. Rumours abound. Martin is just as curious as everyone else, but he's not one for gossip no matter how juicy. Then he's working in the shop one day when the aged landline telephone rings. It's basically a relic at this point. Martin is surprised it's still functional, honestly. He answers it and through static, hears a man's voice. Academic. Turns out, it's the new owner of the lighthouse! He's calling in to set up a bi-weekly grocery delivery. Martin takes down his information and banking info and the call ends.
Naturally he prepares everything the man , one 'Jonathan Sims' asks for, and makes more to get more of the low stock items, and loads up his old truck. When it's time, he drives up the narrow, rocky cliff path to the lighthouse and the cabin, and knocks on the door. He's not at all prepared for what the mysterious Jonathan Sims actually looks like.
For one, he's not nearly as old as he sounded on the phone. He has to be about Martin's age. Early thirties, if not younger. His facial features are somehow both severe and feminine, and his hair is done up in a professional manner. It's his eyes though. When Jon opens the door, he is so cautious, so...suspicious. The glasses he wears makes him look like a grumpy librarian. A grumpy librarian—with secrets.
Martin introduces himself, and leaves the groceries on the porch, and though he's dying to know more about the man on the cliff, he says his goodbyes and leaves...
To be continued~?

I’ve got this headcanon that has been rattling around in my head for a while. I feel like Jon and Sasha went to school or uni together, or something like that.
Cause if Sasha used to work in artifact storage, whereas Jon and Tim in research. I always wondered how he would have known her well enough to request her. Even if he’s just heard about her (as Gertrude might have seeing as she was hoping that she would be the next archivist) whenever we get a smidgen of Jon and Sasha interacting it’s very friendly. More than Jon and Tim imo. Even then, I genuinely doubt there’s that much communication or collaboration between the departments. Seeing as Jon seemed to have never heard of Martin. And other than the one fluff episode, no one in any other department has even been mentioned. (Especially with the worm infestation, if you were friends with your co workers wouldn’t you talk to them about that sort of thing?)
But all of that has always bugged me. Because why would Jon specifically request Sasha if he barely knew her? It’s not like Tim was the only coworker he ever interacted with. Hence, they must have known each other outside of the institute.
Thanks for coming to my ted talk.

The psychological damage in media when the main character finds out someone close to them is dying and asks why they weren't told sooner only to realise it was because of their own negligence oh my god

In a Canadian 1973 Dracula TV-movie (it's on youtube), when Jonathan sees Dracula leaving the castle for England, he touches his throat, and we see two bite marks on it, showing that Dracula had bitten him off-screen.
Then the three vampire women appear, and tell him that now that Dracula has left, Jonathan is meant to become their new husband.
HAHAHAHAHA wait, that’s so funny!! I’m glad someone at least thought of this too when making an adaptation. I’m simultaneously picturing a “babe, wake up, new husband just dropped” meme and the women appearing — checking their nails — while one of them says “ok, so you’re, like, our new husband now. So be a dear and get us some food, why don’t you?”
I imagine it goes down much less funny than either of these, but I’m having a blast imagining this! It’s just so bizarre.
And you said it’s on YouTube? I checked and I think it’s free…oh no. Now I’m tempted to watch it and post my reactions. I haven’t even posted my final thoughts on BBC Dracula though. Decisions, decisions…
