Hearing an entire crowd laugh after John Mulaney said “What, are you gonna cancel John Mulaney? I’ll kill him.
beat.
I almost did”
felt so dystopian but also I understand that it was a joke and he said it with the cadence of a joke and you’re meant to laugh at comedy shows and actually it would’ve worse if no one laughed but it was interesting to hear an entire crowd laugh at something like that. If that was said with any different delivery and was in a drama movie with emotional music I’d be on the floor.
#screaming crying throwing up#why did his new special fill me with so much emotion#also maybe one of my favourite ones now i thought it was hilarious#john mulaney#john mulaney baby j#netflix#tw suicide#my post

John Mulaney: Baby J (dir. Alex Timbers).
It’s been an tumultuous few years for John Mulaney. He comically sums up his highly-publicized struggles with addiction and the unhealthy interest in his personal life or supposed “good guy” public image. Originally toured under the title “From Scratch”, the comedian’s latest stand-up comedy special tackles our obsession with celebrity culture and parasocial relationships with famous people in a blisteringly funny manner.

A Cry for Help: John Mulaney Baby J
When AI technology copies the voice of John Mulaney, he will be out of work for good, because I can’t imagine a single studio taking a chance on him after seeing his new comedy special, Baby J. Let’s me give a little backstory first before I get into it. Mulaney is a standup comedian who went to rehab in 2021. He is reportedly “clean” now and decided to do a Netflix Special explaining his time…

I saw this live, I haven’t been a fan for a while, because his whole situation grossed me out immensely.
Then when he said this bit I thought “you are a mediocre comedian, who happened to gain a fan base of the most passionate media consumers (Queer youth) and then you disappointed everyone.”
He acts like people turned on him because he was an addict. People don’t like him because he made contest jokes about his lovely Jewish wife kind of at her expense, but he loved her, Then cheated on her with a model and had a kid.
Like dude, Jesus Christ….
Also he isn’t even comparable to Bo Burnham. Bo is an artist with genuine things to say who uses comedy as a means of delivering.
You are a mediocre comedian. Grow up.

Baby J is actually really brave and necessary show for John Mulaney to make because it’s the only one that is actually about him, and really wraps up this arc about people’s parasocial relationships with him, disillusioning thay image of perfection he’s crafted for himself. He says himself in the special that he wants attention and wants everyone to like him - his previous shows effectively managed to do that by discussing things that were easy to laugh at like ‘hate my wife’ culture or Trump.
In Baby J, he actually talks about his life currently, specifically the bad stuff he never talked about before, allowing people to actually see him for the first time, a flawed human being. It’s a slightly darker show, because of it, while still showcasing his skill and particular flair of comedy. Being a people pleaser, it’s an important lesson that you shouldn’t keep up that image of perfection - you can’t. He’s the perfect example of what happens when you build yourself a pedestal to live on.
And as he finishes the show, he reminds everyone once again, that even the most horrible, shameful, and embarrassing story he told that night, is still only the most horrible, shameful and embarrassing story he was willing to tell us. Reminding us that we only see what he wants us to see, as is the case with all celebrities.
