It’s kind of crazy to me that Waverly was a-okay with turning to stone on the throne of Guardian because she thought Nicole didn’t want to marry her and then the moment when Wynonna tells her that Nicole does, she immediately asks her to help her off it. To save her.

Waverly had already resigned herself to loneliness and it’s like the proof that Nicole does want to be with her reinvigorated her. Made her make all the effort again.

She was willing to just give it all up - sacrifice her entire life - her very existence all because she believed she was rejected by the love of her life. Kind of crazy.

Nicole thought she was the one being left behind. But she never knew how much Waverly’s world spins and revolves around Nicole’s love for and devotion to her.

Seeing Season 4 from Waverly’s side as opposed to Nicole’s side opens up a whole other insight into how significant that ‘Sacrifice scene’ in 4x11 actually is because the duty of The Angel is once again pulling Waverly away from what matters most to her. Nicole.

In the end the choice to be made is duty or Nicole.

But it’s Nicole that makes the decision for her. Both.

That’s what being the Angel’s Shield means and I’ve never really realized it until now. So she can have both.

The Angel’s Shield is not a stand-alone role or position. It’s not an anointment like Wynonna as The Champion. It’s standing in place of The Angel. That’s why she immediately transforms back into Waverly the moment Nicole declares herself as The Shield.

It literally means A SHIELD. A protection around The Angel, The Champion and the Ghost River Triangle.

She’s not a knight. She’s the actual armour itself which explains why she cannot leave the territory.

Because if she leaves, there there is no defence for it. It’s immediately left vulnerable to both all the evil in it and surrounding it. To all the supernatural nasties. The Angel’s Shield represents a forcefield that keeps all of that out. But in order for it to do so, it must stay there.

It actually makes so much more sense when you take into consideration Waverly’s side of the story arc as opposed to Nicole’s because Waverly is center of it and Nicole revolves around it like its axis. It’s moon. It’s just Waverly thought it was the opposite way around at the start of the arc in the end of Season 3/start of Season 4 because she felt worthless and purposeless without Nicole’s love and devotion to her.

As I said - she already resigned herself to her duty as The Angel even though that meant she’d have no life. And she only did so because she thought Nicole didn’t want her. Rejected her because she didn’t say ‘yes’. As soon as it was proven to her this wasn’t the truth, she immediately went the other way. Rejected the throne.

Chose Nicole over duty. So when she was forced into that duty and had no choice, Nicole made it for her by becoming the Angel’s Shield. Essentially chose both.

Now - there’s no difference. Nicole is also that duty. Just as Waverly is. Just as Wynonna is. All 3 of them.

So you see what they’ve done. They’ve told the same story they did at the end of Season 3 but backwards.

So that the whole story of it would come full circle.

Nicole is Waverly’s destiny. Waverly is Nicole’s destiny. So now they’re linked in such a way that ties into the lore of the whole storytelling that is ‘Wynonna Earp’.

All 3 of them. Waverly - The Angel. Nicole - The Angel’s Shield. Wynonna - The Champion. Linked.

That’d have to be nuts to not bring this whole thing back in ‘Vengeance’ because that’s fucking riveting!

New favourite WayHaught video. This one’s powerful. All about the lengths one another will go to to keep each other safe, alive and happy. The sacrifices and the compromises. Set to Sleeping At Last’s ‘Saturn’.

Like I said,… you never really get to this point in a WLW love story in TV art/entertainment unless the required 3 things are present all throughout the show.

1. Both characters in the WLW ship have to be main characters with their own respectful individual arcs.

2. It has to be believable. You have to see the journey start to finish for it to feel earned and be foundational.

3. The creator and actors have to care about the characters and keep the focus on their development.

You can have great chemistry. You can have great writing. But REPRESENTATION is about SEEING it. Only then do moments like what is illustrated in this beautiful video hit and work and FEEL strong and substantial. The reason why WayHaught is great WLW representation is because they don’t pull you away from not just the love and devotion these characters feel for each other, but also the way in which they maintain those feelings of love and devotion. How they build on the representation and development for both characters individually as well as together so that you see everything you need to to feel that it goes that deep and it’s called for for them to be this ride or die for each other in high-intensity moments of passion.

That’s what representation is about. In the end it’s a combination of what the creator intends and how the actors portray what is intended that is what you see. The rest may be entirely subjective and that’s fine. But the people creating and portraying that ship have to deliver the content and convey it well to the audience. Then the audience takes it and interprets what they will out of it to make it more meaningful and impactful to them. But they can’t do that if they’re not provided what will allow them the space and scope to do that.

Unfortunately, half the time with representation in the TV art/entertainment industry the audience are the ones doing all the damn work. It’s not good enough.
