This is actually one of my favorite fic series of all time. It's in first person POV, so just a heads up on that, but it's the only fic that I've ever purchased in physical book form.

Fall Out Boy is one of the most popular bands in the alternative scene. Almost everyone’s heard of them, whether they’ve heard their popular songs on the radio or gone deeper into their seven album discography. However, there are a good number of bands that have a similar sound to Fall Out Boy that don’t get anywhere near that amount of attention. If you enjoy Fall Out Boy’s sound, here are some other bands you might also enjoy:
The Academy Is….
Tumblr media
Description: Born in Chicago, The Academy Is… was signed to FBR and Decaydance until their breakup in 2011. They released three albums during their nine years together. Their single from Fast Times at Barrington High, “About A Girl”, reached the highest level of popularity out of all of their tracks.
Why They’re Like Fall Out Boy: If you’re a big FOB fan, you’ve heard lead singer William Beckett featured on tracks like “What a Catch, Donnie” and “Sophomore Slump or Comeback of the Year”. Pete was the one to get TAI signed and FOB and TAI stayed close friends. Besides these associations, though, I feel that TAI has a similar sound to FOB. Their first album, Almost Here, has that pop-punk vibe to it that is reminiscent of Take This To Your Grave and From Under The Cork Tree. The second, Santi, is a little more indie rock, and the third, Fast Times at Barrington High, has a little bit more of a pop vibe to it, but the association between the two bands is very clear.
Track Recommendations: After the Last Midtown Show, Seed, Slow Down, Classifieds
Set It Off
Tumblr media
Description: Established in Tampa, Florida, Set It Off is signed to Equal Vision Records and has put out three records. They were discovered via YouTube. None of their songs have hit the mainstream yet, but their song “Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing” (featuring William Beckett of The Academy Is…) has the most streams on Spotify.
Why They’re Like Fall Out Boy: Set It Off adores FOB, going so far as to name their band after a FOB lyric from FOB’s “Calm Before The Storm”. They cite FOB as one of their musical influences and definitely bring out that pop-punk sound in all of their albums, most notably in their second album, Duality. Their third album, Upside Down, brings out more of the pop in pop-punk, but FOB’s influence is still present.
Track Recommendations: Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing, Why Worry, Want, @Reply, I’d Rather Drown
The Cab
Tumblr media
Description: Formerly also signed to Fueled by Ramen/Decaydance, The Cab has been in the scene for a while, though they’ve only released two albums: Whisper War and Symphony Soldier. They’re currently on hiatus, but there is hope for more music in the future. Their most streamed track on Spotify is “Angel With a Shotgun”.
Why They’re Like Fall Out Boy: As said before, The Cab was a DCD/FBR band that had close associations with FOB. The band’s lead singer, Alex DeLeon, was featured on “What a Catch, Donnie” and also featured Patrick Stump (plus Brendon Urie of Panic! at the Disco) on “One of THOSE Nights.” Their first album, Whisper War, has more of a pop-punk influenced sound. However, their second, Symphony Soldier, has a similar pop-rock sound that reminds me of many of Fall Out Boy’s later works, so if you’re into post-hiatus FOB, give it a listen.
Track Recommendations: One of THOSE Nights, Angel With a Shotgun, I’ll Run, Endlessly, These Are the Lies
The Wrecks
Tumblr media
Description: One of the newer bands on this list, The Wrecks just released We Are The Wrecks in 2016 and Panic Vertigo in 2018. Though they don’t have many songs yet, their single “Favorite Liar” hit the alternative stations and put them into the world’s view, enough to perform a headlining tour. Hopefully they’ll keep putting out great new material in the years to come.
Why They’re Like Fall Out Boy: The pop-punk vibes that The Wrecks give off definitely remind me of pre-hiatus Fall Out Boy. They’ve got spunk, they’ve got anger towards their exes, and they’ve got catchy choruses paired with great lyrics. They also have toured with groups similar to Fall Out Boy, such as All Time Low. If you’re a fan of Fall Out Boy’s more radio-ready tunes, give them a listen.
Track Recommendations: There’s so few you might as well listen to all of them, but…. Turn It Up, Favorite Liar, James Dean, I Don’t Like You, Panic Vertigo
Cedar Green
Tumblr media
Description: Cedar Green is also a newer band, having released only two EPs: The Tale of Two Wolves in 2014 and The One You Feed in 2016. They’ve done a good few American tours, but are just starting to build a following. In the coming years, they should be releasing new music and gaining new fans.
Why They’re Like Fall Out Boy: They’ve really got the pop-punk sound combined with bits of radio hooks that makes their songs incredibly catchy. Their lyrics also remind me a lot of Pete Wentz’s ‘emo’ lyrics from back in the day, such as: “It’s just one of those nights/Where I contemplate life/Well, when everyone’s against me/And I’m stuck with my thoughts/They’re bleeding in” from “The One You Feed.” In addition, they’ve opened for other FOB-inspired bands like Set It Off.
Track Recommendations: The One You Feed, Chutes and Ladders, Ursula, Sleeptalker, Stormy Weather
