#jodie: sandra I hate this

So hard for me to remember Killing Eve with anything approaching fondness when all I can recall is the absolutely garbage racist fandom and writers and how they all let a powerhouse, talented and established actress like Sandra Oh down.

They underwrote Eve's character, did not have any diaspora Asian sensitivity guides to write Eve Polastri's identity to be as meaningful to her as Villanelle's past in Russia was to the latter, they didn't know the basics of Asian identity (something as stereotypically familiar as removing shoes when you enter the house; Sandra had to clue it in for them) they gave Villanelle multiple backstory episodes and could even afford some episodes for Carolyn and Konstantin's tragic love, while the titular character was paid dust. And everything about Eve became a celebration of Villanelle's fetish for older women with curly hair. Villanelle was allowed to eye fuck (or actually fuck) other women and be a "real dyke" (actual words I saw here). She was celebrated as the classic quirky lesbian with mommy issues, while Eve could not even look at a single other woman without Sandra Oh getting racial slurs thrown at her on Twitter and Instagram, and even here on Tumblr. Eve could not do a single morally grey thing without being shouted at for being a cold stereotypically racialized ice queen bitch, while Villanelle had to be the poor innocent baby who needed protection and coddling by the narrative and the writers.

When s4 became utter garbage, white women began mass rallying for Villanelle and building altars around Europe and USA, while Sandra Oh received hate for apparently green-flagging the bad ending and "queerbaiting" lesbian audiences. On the other hand, Jodie Comer is a sweet puppy sapphic icon who deserves to be coddled and venerated into honorary queer icon status.

Meanwhile, every minor female character of color was written out, mistreated and treated as second place fodder to Villanelle throughout all four seasons, while we just had to shut up and not complain about it. It was giving liberal feminist outrage over Daenerys getting shish kabob'd while the Dornish and Dothraki women were written into humiliating, vilifying plotlines for several seasons straight. It was giving white women crying over Margot Robbie not getting nominated for an Oscar for Barbie and writing theses about how "to be a female artist is to rage against injustice". My point being that whatever value Killing Eve could've possibly held for me was undone by the violent racism, anti-Asian rhetoric, speculative gossip and ageism that white sapphics and other white female fans of Jodie Comer demonstrated towards Sandra Oh. I'm actually glad your fave got shish kabob'd too.

after recovering from my initial shock, i can now come out of the dark and say that it was color theory all along.

the tarot cards were so important. the yellow being the rain jacket villanelle wore and eve wearing black jacket but on the yacht, eve is wearing yellow and villanelle is wearing the black. the cards were reversed. it's so genius of the creators *kissing phoebe waller bridge loml* to use a thing like that to portray the sun and death cards.

and honestly after the jesus hallucination episodes, you could kinda tell where villanelle was headed mentally and plot-wise.

also even if carolyn martens did all that AND MORE, she was still the most powerful, most complex, most well-written woman i have EVER and i mean it, EVER seen on a show. i will never forget that she controlled the whole show's narrative not because she had loyalties to someone or doing the right thing. she just did things she was good at (serving cunt ALL THE FUCKING TIME).

(btw nothing has made me gayer than watching arcane and killing eve in a very close timeframe. jodie comer, sandra oh, fiona shaw, camille cottin. the whole time my bestie and i were watching, i'd say "range is playing aunt fuckass petunia AND the sexiest woman alive THE CAROLYN MARTENS")

there were so many men in high ranking positions in the twelve and mi6 and kgb and whatnot, but the show was so perfect they all had zero impact on the plot or on the audience's memory. i for one wont remember vlad or lars or whoever the fuck.

idk why but i honestly thought konstantin would survive the being killed/maimed by a woman narrative that haunts every man *rightfully so* on the show. he is also one of the most complex and memorable characters on the show.

i hated the hannigram of it all *the relationship* btw. i do it to myself. each fucking time. with hannibal, supernatural, arcane, interview with the vampire, fellow travelers. doomed gays istg.

and finally, the show is honestly not for anyone who cant take 32/32 episodes of edging. cause they literally team tf up and unite in the VERY LAST EPISODE.

so the bad kids all love doctor who and watch it together but imma be prescribing their fav doctor

Riz: 100% this man is into sherlock but just because he hates it so much. All the plot holes in the mysteries drive him mad and he has his own conspiracy board for the plot lines. For supernatural he would skip all the plot episodes and only watch the filler case solving episodes. He would then realize he needs the whole picture and watch the entire 15 seasons. His fav doctor is david tennents because he does the most mystery solving.

Fig: Only know about sherlock from Riz's deranged ramblings but ships Jonlock. Fig recommended supernatural to Riz but has only watched the earlier 'edgy' seasons. Her fav doctor would def be Tennant or Capaldi due to their "i don't wear my heart on my sleeve but i do" attitude.

Kristen: Again only know sherlock from Riz and Adaine but ships jonlock and makes weird edits of them to show Riz who hates it. She loves supernatural- the biggest destiel shipper ever and has frequent arguments with Riz over whether it's canon (Riz thinks it totally normal to be so devoted to your best friend you would go to superhell). The biggest Matt smith fan, buys a fez, won't stop wearing the fez, the bad kids have to stage an intervention

Adaine: Also into sherlock but just sorta watches it in the background while she does other stuff. Like to try and solve the mysteries with Riz and hates what a pretentious prick Sherlock is in the later seasons. Adaine watches supernatural with Fig, Kristen, Riz, Jawbone, Sandra-Lynn and Ayda at mordered manor and really connects with the found family aspect. Casual fan. Her favourite doctor is Jodie whittaker and hates her shitty writing but she says her favourtie is Ecclestone cause hes her second fav.

Fabian: Not into sherlock at all, thinks it's for nerds like the ball. Same with supernatural but after seeing a few of the fight scenes he watches a few episodes alone in his giant house so he can feel connected to his friends and know what they are talking about. His favourite doctor is matt smith and peter capaldi for reasons

Gorgug: Watched season one but didnt go any further. Really likes the mark of cain arc and sees a lot of himself in castiel. He's just sorta vibing with the others who watch it. His favourite doctor is Tennat as he has more gadgets.

Was feeling sad, so naturally, I binged all their scenes in the final episode (minus V’s death, which I abjectly refuse to watch).

It hurts so good. It’s horrible. I hate it. I love it. It’s perfect. I hate it because (until the last 30 seconds) it is perfect.

It’s pure queer joy. It’s the reason queer women don’t feel safe. It’s heartbreaking. It might have been the best episode (at the end of an admittedly odd season)—or at least a contender for my favorite episode—if it weren’t the worst episode (of the whole series). Without the last 30 seconds, it’s one of my favorite eps of sapphic television, maybe any television. With it, I have to decide if I hate it more than the ending of Game of Thrones.

I feel warm. I want to cry. I love Sandra and Jodie and the IC. I hate Laura Neal.

all in all, laura neal was tasked with the job of cleaning up everyone’s messes. i know a lot of people loved s2, but i feel like this ep really showcased emerald fennell’s faults in the sense that she completely departed from the 12 plot in favor of some nonsense fucking storyline about a tech billionaire that came out of NOWHERE (i will argue that she lost the show around ep 5 of s2 but before then it was pretty good tonally and character wise and ep 4 of s2 is still one of my faves of the series in general).

these 12 flashbacks should have been 3-5 minute scenes sprinkled in over the course of s2 as eve dug further into the 12 (after her project had been disbanded) with kenny and an off the books carolyn, ultimately leading to carolyn’s betrayal of eve when we find out like some fucked up thing she did to make the 12 the organization it is today.

suzanne tried?? i guess. a piss poor attempt, but i truly cannot imagine being tasked with rescuing the 12 plot from season 1 and keeping up with everyone’s characters. laura is trying, and she’s making good tv while she does it. i’ve found all of these episodes genuinely entertaining. i’ve found all of these episodes to tonally align with killing eve. i’ve also felt all of these episodes feel like a direct successor of s1. it’s a shame it took so long to get there.

The flirty/stupid banter with both of them being cocky as hell, and then villanelle gettin pissy cause eve’s being more indifferent than she expected her to be, and then realizing eve wasn’t lying about hiring her so she’s like what the WHAT? And throughout it all for eve to be nonchalant still, like, ‘there’s not going to be a murder u stupid bitch’ which prompts V to be like shshsh lemme show YOU WHAT

Eve was right and she knew it but she had to play her ass like a jerk.
