The Philippines is known as a country that supports political dynasties, and powerful clans have played a major role in the country’s politics for decades. But in the last week of June, Vice President Sara Duterte made an announcement that rocked the nation as her family appears to be gearing up to take political dynasties to the next level. On June 28, the vice president confirmed that her father, Former President Rodrigo Duterte, and her brothers, Davao First District Rep. Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte, will all run for senator in the 2025 elections.
Social media is all abuzz with news of this development, with those supporting the Duterte camp ecstatic at the possibility of having all three Dutertes in the Senate. However, those who are staunchly against this have been equally loud on Twitter and Facebook, calling the country’s political system a joke. As one of the most influential political families in the country have benefited from the results of a well-executed social media strategy in the last presidential elections, Filipinos can expect that the Internet will once again turn into an all-out war zone in the coming months. But can social media bring about the downfall of political dynasties, or will it take them to new heights? Here’s what you need to know about the influence of social media on political dynasties in the Philippines.
Social Media Brought the Marcoses Back to Power
For two decades, Filipinos had to submit to the rules of Ferdinand Marcos’ regime as the former president enforced Martial Law. Historians attest that his dictatorship resulted in over 3,000 extrajudicial killings and more than 30,000 tortures, apart from other human rights violations. The Marcoses also infamously stole $5 to $10 billion from the Central Bank of the Philippines as stated in the documents provided by the Presidential Commission on Good Government.
After the assassination of opposition leader Benigno Aquino Jr., Marcos was blamed for his death. The family immediately fell from grace as Aquino’s supporters joined hands to support his widow, Corazon Aquino, during the People Power Revolution of 1986. Mrs. Aquino became the new President of the Philippines, while the Marcoses were exiled in Hawaii. In 1989, the matriarch, Imelda, as well as Marcos’ children were allowed to return to the country, and from there, they started planning their political comeback. Their return to politics started with Imelda winning a congressional seat in 1995, while her children, Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Imee Marcos, won positions in local government.
After Bongbong was elected as a senator in the 2010 elections, it was only a matter of time before he decided to run in the presidential elections. In 2022, Bongbong was up against nine other presidential candidates, the most notable being Leni Robredo, who was the Vice President at that time. It was reported that social media campaigns to discredit Robredo, a strong disinformation campaign, and online efforts to revise history contributed to Bongbong’s win, putting the Marcoses firmly back in power. That election year was one of the most divisive times in Philippine history, as it resulted in the falling out of families, the shut down of a major TV network, and increased hostility in social media platforms.
Political Dynasties and Their Hold on Social Media
Political analysts are saying that the Philippines is where it is right now because certain politicians have turned public office into family businesses. With everyone complaining about the ever-increasing prices of commodities, lack of jobs, and non-stop graft and corruption for so many years now, many would think that Filipinos should have had enough of political families by this time. However, with politicians becoming social media savvy in recent years, it’s likely that more political dynasties will rise in the future. With the majority of Filipinos perpetually online, it’s likely that political clans will take to the Internet to gather support for their family members who are vying for a place in politics.
Other than the Dutertes, political analyst Edmund Tayao predicts that there will be more families running together in the upcoming senate elections. Siblings Pia and Alan Cayetano currently have seats in the senate, and so do Cynthia Villar and her son Mark. They are all projected to run for reelection in 2025. Meanwhile, 3 members of the Tulfo family, which has four members in congress, are also said to run in the senate elections. Their bid for a senate seat will be confirmed upon the filing of Certificates of Candidacy in October.
Countering Political Misinformation on Social Media
Certain influencers have found ways to spread disinformation on social media as a way to promote some political families, but anti-disinformation advocates have also taken to TikTok and Facebook to fight political misinformation. Genealogist Mona Magno-Veluz is one such TikTok personality who is actively battling historical and political misinformation. There’s also the local civic society organization Break the Fake movement, which regularly holds seminars to train influencers to fact-check their sources.
AI tools have also been used by fact-checking initiatives such as FactsFirstPH to fight disinformation. Meanwhile, to inform the youth about election-related information, nonprofit corporation Pinas Forward created the E-Boto website, which contains background information for all national candidates, presented in a Gen Z-friendly, TikTok style.
Can Social Media Eradicate Political Dynasties in the Philippines?
Social media has made it easier to access information, but it has also created opportunities to spread disinformation and propaganda techniques to sway the results of elections. Knowing how to distinguish facts from lies, and putting a stop to historical revisionism can protect Filipinos from repeating past mistakes. Fact-checking information, hearing the opinions of a diverse group of people, and educating the public about the dangers of disinformation, fear mongering, hate speech, and cyberbullying may all help to boost the nation’s media literacy and prevent political families from dominating in the upcoming elections.
But as long as Filipinos keep voting for candidates who share the same beliefs and principles as their family members who are in power, no amount of protests on Facebook or Twitter can change the country’s political landscape. As proven by the current administration, social media will continue to be a valuable tool for political dynasties jockeying for power. After all, it helped a once shunned family to regain their place in politics, so no one should be surprised if it enables multiple family members – even those who are blatantly unqualified – to be elected into public office.

Armor by John Bengan is a collection of thirteen stories set in late 90s Davao City when the then mayor Rodrigo Duterte started his (in)famous "cleansing" of the crime-infested city, a purge we now know so well.
From a Death Squad recruit on his first day on the job to a drug user Miss Gay contestant, these stories give the reader a taste of Duterte's Davao before the War on Drugs became a national phenomenon.
The premise, setting, and subject matter appeal immensely to me; add to that the fact that this book is a National Book Awards finalist, so of course, I was excited to pick it up. It's an anticipated read.
Which is why I'm sad that this did not work for me. While I enjoyed the 90s feel of the whole collection, overall, I found the writing bland and clunky in places. The Filipino expressions, kasabihan, lost their power when translated into English. The second-person point of view is wasted on stories that elicit little emotion from the reader. Except for a few standouts, I did not jive very much with the telling of these important stories.
The standouts in this collection are the following:
"Slaughter Story" and "Manny Pacquiao Speaks to a Butterfly in California"—both of which I like because of their experimental nature; the title story "Armor" and my favorite, "Disguise."

The Booming Construction Business in the Philippines: A Look at the Growth and Opportunities
The construction industry in the Philippines has experienced significant growth in recent years, driven by the country's expanding economy and increasing demand for residential, commercial, and infrastructure projects. The Philippine government has been heavily investing in infrastructure as part of its "Build, Build, Build" program, which has boosted the construction sector's output. This article takes a closer look at the booming construction business in the Philippines, with a focus on the role of House Construction Company Philippines and how they contribute to shaping the future of housing and infrastructure in the country.
Economic Growth and the Construction Boom
The Philippines has enjoyed steady economic growth over the past decade, and this growth has translated into increased demand for both residential and commercial construction. The urbanization of major cities, particularly Metro Manila, Cebu, and Davao, has led to the rise of new residential neighborhoods, office buildings, shopping malls, and mixed-use developments. This rapid urbanization has been a key driver for House Construction Company Philippines, as there is a growing need for modern housing solutions to accommodate the country's expanding population.
In addition to residential construction, the Philippine government’s push for infrastructure development has provided ample opportunities for construction companies. Projects such as new roads, bridges, airports, and railways are not only improving the nation's transportation system but are also creating more jobs and economic opportunities within the construction sector.
The Role of House Construction Companies
House Construction Company Philippines plays a crucial role in addressing the increasing demand for quality housing in the country. With a growing population and a rising middle class, there is an urgent need for affordable yet durable homes. Many construction companies are focusing on providing affordable housing options that cater to the needs of various income groups, from low-cost housing to more luxurious developments for higher-income individuals.
One of the key factors contributing to the success of House Construction Company Philippines is the ability to adapt to market trends. With the rise of sustainable and eco-friendly living, construction companies have been incorporating green building practices into their designs. This includes using energy-efficient materials, installing solar panels, and ensuring that homes are built with environmental sustainability in mind.
Additionally, the demand for modern housing designs that offer smart home features is on the rise. Companies are increasingly focusing on integrating technology into homes, offering features such as automated lighting, security systems, and climate control. This trend is especially appealing to the younger, tech-savvy generation that is becoming a dominant force in the housing market.
Opportunities and Challenges in the Construction Industry
While the growth of the construction industry in the Philippines presents numerous opportunities, there are also several challenges that companies face. One of the biggest hurdles is the rising cost of construction materials. The fluctuating prices of steel, cement, and other raw materials can impact project costs, making it challenging for construction companies to maintain profitability while keeping prices affordable for consumers.
Labor shortages are another issue that affects the construction industry in the Philippines. As demand for construction projects rises, there is a need for skilled workers to manage and execute these projects. This shortage of qualified labor can delay construction timelines and increase project costs. However, construction companies are addressing this issue by providing training and skills development programs for workers.
Despite these challenges, the outlook for the construction industry in the Philippines remains positive. The government's continued investment in infrastructure, coupled with the growing demand for housing and commercial properties, presents a wealth of opportunities for construction businesses.
Conclusion
The construction business philippines is poised for continued growth, driven by urbanization, government initiatives, and a rising demand for both residential and commercial properties. The role of House Construction Company Philippines in meeting the growing housing needs of the population cannot be overstated. As the sector evolves, construction companies will continue to innovate, focusing on sustainability, affordability, and technological advancements to meet the demands of the modern Filipino consumer. Despite the challenges that may arise, the construction industry remains one of the most promising sectors in the country’s economic landscape, offering numerous opportunities for growth and development.

1 2 3, ACTion!
Alright, this is it! It is the rising action stage in our lives where life truly begins. Adulthood is the stage where we make crucial decisions that favor the goals and opportunities we want. What we do and decide in adulthood is not the same as in our early years, where we act and think recklessly, and the time that we have is so scarce now because of the responsibilities needed to complete. It is the stage that I, as a college student, will be facing in the next few years. While I am still not in this stage, I had the opportunity to hear the voice of an individual currently in this stage. His name is Romel, a 24-year-old from Buhisan Davao City, and having a conversation with him was a great and eye-opening experience.
Romel is an optimistic guy, he graduated from college 2 years ago and as of now he is just resting and taking a break, prioritizing his physical and mental health while also casually looking for a job. He prioritizes his sleep, where he makes sure that he gets 8 hours of sleep every night which helps him avoid headaches when he wakes up in the morning. He doesn’t do vigorous activities or exercises, instead, he only goes jogging. Romel is also a happy-go-lucky guy. He stated that in the past, he would always go to parties or go out somewhere to have fun. This differs from what I always perceive in people his age where after graduating, they would immediately go look for jobs and focus on something. What he said really highlights how he views this as a rushed way of living life. But then, this partying feels tiresome and exhausting for Romel now. Still, it doesn’t stop him from having his own ways of having fun while also taking care of himself.
He plays a lot of games, and there are a variety of them too! Mainly competitive MOBA and shooter-based games. On the sidelines, he also stated that he plays games such as Wordscapes and Sudoku if he is sometimes not fond of playing competitively. These games helped Romel sharpen and learn more knowledge. Speaking of knowledge, he learned a lot from his experience in life that really affected how he thinks and acts. A lot of this learning is mainly because of his family. He understands and realizes that his decisions and actions must be for the betterment of his family, where everything he does and says is not the same as when he was just young, and that he is more mature now than he was before. It’s no wonder that he has a happy relationship with his romantic partner, friends, and family. Romel would always say to me that helping others can be really beneficial because when a time comes when he needs something, he has someone to approach, and they will be willing to help him.
At the end of our talk, he briefly added that Developmental Psychology is a really cool subject and a fascinating lesson to learn because of the different processes and factors that can affect an individual's upbringing. When I ended the voice recorder as I wrapped up the interview, he gave me a piece of advice and a reminder. He told me that we as college students must control and balance everything, because this balancing really helped him out in his life in and after college. Life is just beginning, and we must not simultaneously pressure ourselves on things we can and cannot control. But by balancing the positive and negative aspects of life. With these insights shared by Romel, It sure is a great way to start the “live” action movie I star in, which is myself.

THIS JUST IN: Dabaweña Vlogger and Financial Social Media Analyst 'Tomboy TV' receives settlement of 6-digit figure payouts after 10 months of Monetization Delays [#OneNETnewsEXCLUSIVE]
DAVAO CITY, DAVAO DEL SUR -- American social media company 'Meta Platforms Inc.' [MPi] (a tech giant of Facebook) and Philippine National Bank (PNB) in Davao City officially settled and recently paid out the Dabaweña vlogger & financial social media analyst 'Benje Llanos' (knowningly as 'Tomboy TV'), following her mass frustrations of Creators Supports (facing and forcing to resolve issues), payout delays and on-hold statuses for 10 months straight since late last year in July 2023.
Llanos' 6-digit figures amounting in Philippine Peso, converting from American U.S. dollars in the overall worth of U$D6,803.81 (equivalent to nearly PHP400,000; per the combined amount to be settled of U$D5,134.22 [or PHP298,349.53], and U$D1,669.59 [or PHP97,019.88]), thanks to Facebook's monetization tools on Stars, Fan Subscriptions, Branded Content, Ads on Reels, In-Stream Ads and Performance Bonuses after a long process and settling payments from MPi, which is now paid out early last weekend on Thursday (May 23rd, 2024 -- Davao local time).
As you might recall in our previous exclusive investigation of OneNETnews around a month ago last April 2024, the financial department on Facebook and MPi allegedly being replaced into global Artificial Intelligence (AI), instead of real social media employees. Regional spokespersons of Facebook Philippines and the social media company's flagship home country in Menlo Park, California, United States of America (U.S.A.), have taken all action to settle the entire amount. Facebook apologizes for the inconvenience for not compensating their social media hard work through Dabaweña vlogger & financial social media analyst of Davao City.
Because of in-demand support on social media, Llanos uploads original content and latest happenings on Facebook LIVE video and Reels video combined by simply filming social media monetization tutorials and the skills of video editing. Efforts and hard work have paid off for so long because of this 6-digit figures in Philippine Peso to be paid out from MPi to the local banking institution of PNB.
Influencers and vloggers combined, despite both issues on her social media account of 'Tomboy TV' having already been settled by paying out from MPi, it is still decided whether or not Ms. Llanos could take a social media break for late summer vacation, per the example by travelling to Cagayan de Oro City, or continue working as usual in real life until early retirement comes.
With that, a big congratulations to Ms. Benje Llanos of 'Tomboy TV' on a job well done using a social media monetization. Daghang salamat po!

The International Criminal Court (ICC) is looking to hire translators of major Philippine languages, in what lawyers of drug war victims believe could be a sign that its investigation of extrajudicial killings during the Duterte administration is moving into the next stage.
Based on a job posting on European career opportunity websites, the Hague-based ICC’s Office of the Prosecutor seeks applicants fluent in Filipino, Tagalog and Cebuano to serve as freelance translators in its Language Services Unit (LSU) in the Integrated Services Division.
The posting came with a warning regarding the sensitive nature of the ICC’s tasks: “Mindful of the nature of the ICC’s mandate and operations, freelance translators must understand that material outsourced for translation may on occasion risk being of an upsetting or disturbing nature.”
Reached for comment, Filipino lawyers representing the families of victims of the bloody drug war said the search for translators could mean that the ICC prosecutor might be moving into an “active phase of fieldwork and questioning witnesses.”
The hiring of translators suggested that investigators would travel to the Philippines to interview victims and families of those killed, and other witnesses about thousands of deaths during former President Rodrigo Duterte’s incumbency as mayor of Davao City, and then as president.
“It now makes the possibility of former President Duterte being put on trial in the ICC a very strong possibility,” [National Union of Peoples’ Lawyers] president Neri Colmenares told the Inquirer by phone.
On Jan. 21, 2024, former Sen. Antonio Trillanes IV, one of those who submitted complaints to the ICC, said a warrant of arrest against Duterte might be issued in the first half of 2024, after ICC investigators visited the country in December. Any future visits by ICC investigators would be “for the purpose of obtaining enough evidence for the secondary level of accused or respondents,” he said.

When’s the last time you ate bread? I had a burger from Wendy's earlier today.
What’s the last movie you watched on your own? I watched a local comedy movie called Ang Tanging Ina, which translates to The Only Mother. It's one of those movies that are almost deliberately bad that it ended up a comedy classic, but the plot is really nice so I ended up liking it. It's an easy watch for sure.
What about the last movie you watched with another person? You've Got Mail. It was an event of a client and they were screening that for Valentine's Day, and I snuck into the cinema for a few minutes to watch a few scenes since I've never seen it before.
How many coats do you own? None. I don't need coats where I live.
What about shoes? Somewhere around 10-15.
One word to describe your most recent ex? Selfish.
Where, in your current country, would you like to live, other than where you do now? Realistically I would love to move somewhere like Cebu or Davao, so that it can still be in the city but life can also be quieter and slower.
Do you like snow? I've never seen snow, so I wouldn't know yet how I feel about it.
Do you like sheer clothing? Eh not really, they demand creativity and some style knowledge and I'm not nearly as passionate about fashion to decide on things like that lol.
Have you ever seen anyone famous in the street? Sure, but being in PR I deal with a lot of famous people on a regular basis so seeing celebrities isn't really something I'm limited to encountering in the street.
Are you hungry right now? I am, a little bit. I'm seeing someone for early dinner in around an hour or so though so I should be alright.
Are you regularly tired? Yes, being in the corporate world and having your braincells sucked out of you on a daily basis isn't the best walk in the park.
What was the last thing to upset you? Continued from this afternoon. Being late to the said dinner I mentioned earlier. I hate wasting people's time by being late, and Metro Manila traffic is just the worst for making you late no matter how much time you allot for travel.
How’s the weather been today? I was indoors and in air-conditioned rooms all day long so it'd be hard for me to tell how it was like today haha.
What was the first tattoo you got or what would be the first tattoo you’ll get? I'd love a really small and subtle reference to BTS. Seven dots, and then each color is matched to their mics.
What was the last store you went into and did you buy anything? I went to a Lawson yesterday to get the biggest bottled water available, because I had a mini fainting/dehydration incident and all my companions insisted I get the fuck inside and get some water, lol.
Have you ever been late for school or work? I was late for college classes more times than I can count, but the most unforgettable moment for me was that time in like...high school (or like Grade 6 or 7? I can't quite remember) when the bus broke down and we got to school by ~8:15 AM – extremely late. Everyone else went down but my anxiety was through the roof that day and I didn't want to have to face walking into the classroom while the first subject was already starting, so I just asked them to take me home.
As for work, I technically have a grace period which allows me to report to work by 10 AM latest and yeah I tend to maximize that from time to time.
Do you prefer to shower in the morning or at night? Morning. I need to shower first thing in the morning – it makes me feel refreshed and calm before work.
What is your favourite kind of fruit cobbler? No thanks.
Is there a basement in your house? If so, what is it used for? We don't.
Have you driven a car today? Yep. In fact I'm taking this survey from my car just for a bit of change.
Do you have a small, medium or large bedroom? It's the smallest bedroom in the house but I'd say it's still medium-sized for me; it fits all of the things I own comfortably.
Where was your first job and how old were you? I was an intern in my current workplace. I was 22 when I started.
Have you eaten soup this week? No, it's not really something I tend to get a lot.
Are you a fan of The Office? I've started with a few Season 1 episodes last December but haven't gotten back on it since. It's hilarious, but it hasn't given me that ~spark or oomph the way Friends immediately did.
When was the last time you started a new medication? Never really been on long-term medications. Last thing I had to take was stuff to help recover from Covid.
What is your favourite type of nut? Pecan, pistachio.
Do you know anyone who doesn’t have a middle name? Used to.
Have you put your phone on silent today? Yep, it's always on silent Mondays through Fridays.
Can you name all 50 US state capital cities? I cannot.
Do you read John Green novels? I did when I was in grade school.
Have you ever been to Universal Studios? I've been to the one in Singapore.
Can you tie balloons? I cannot.
When was the last time you were at a pet store? Years and years and years ago.
