On ep. 3, watching Du Cheng take in information about their latest case, and I feel like he's processing it as a cop would, but he's so thoughtful now, and there's an added nuance in his attention, almost like he's considering not only how each piece of information could help them build a case, but also how the facts and details of the latest trauma will affect Shen Yi, because Shen Yi is still dealing with his own ongoing traumatic response to ... everything.

So it's like Du Cheng is processing everything from that dual perspective: his job as a cop, and his role as Shen Yi's partner and support person.

In other words, I love him, I love them, and I keep having to pause and consider these performances.

Cdrama - Under the Skin

A young painter Shen Yi (Tan Jian Ci) resigned from the Academy of Fine Arts due to the guilt that one of his paintings caused a Secret agent to be exposed and get killed when he was still a student and sketching on the streets. 5 years later, Shen Yi ended up entering the Police Security Bureau mysteriously.

I wasn't spoiled in terms of casting so it was a nice surprise to see Tan Jian Ci and Tang Zeng together again(?). They were both amazing in Winter Begonia but as far as I can recall didn't share any scenes, and what a shame because their scenes in the most recent episodes of this series were powerful. The story was so farfetched, even for this series, but they made it work and Tang Zeng's final scenes were so well acted and his character's grief was so moving that I was close to tears, which almost never happens.

That said, despite the fact that they seem to be communicating telepathically Du Cheng does not have a handle on what Shen Yi is doing, or how he might be putting his life in danger in the moment, but he does appear to be aware that Sheng Yi isn't at all well. Does he feel powerless or unable to find a way to help at this point, or does he have a plan to keep Shen Yi from going off the rails completely? I'm finding their dynamic much more compelling than the weird af cases as of episode 20 and hope we get much more screen time with just the two of them before series two finishes.

Mini-review:

When this movie was first announced I was both excited and terrified. I wanted to reunite with this incredible characters and story, but I was scared they would ruin the original drama, which is one of my favorite TV shows ever. In the end, the movie was neither amazing nor disastrous. I didn't hate it, but it could have been so much better. On the one hand, I loved seeing more of these characters. In a lot of ways, this story is basically fan service. I loved all the new interactions we got and the writer made some really fun choices when mixing up the characters. The main three actors did an incredible job, just like in the drama. It's fascinating how much detail they put into all the little mannerisms and gestures that differentiate the dual characters. And of course, their chemistry is still unforgettable.

However, there were things I didn't like at all. I'm very nitpicking when it comes to time travel/time loop shows and movies, and the original drama is one of the extremely few stories that have absolutely satisfied me in this regard. The whole thing is just so well thought out and perfectly executed. This movie... wasn't. IMHO, the movie's loops and time travel logic were really confusing and made very little sense. And the ending didn't fully convince me, either. Anyway, the fan service mostly makes up for the movie's very flawed internal logic, and I'm sure most fans of the drama will enjoy it a lot.
