And who will keep speaking in their shared/overlapping language through saving each other's lives, getting each other out of fixes, and so on.

And yet. They are still. Not. Listening. To. Each. Other.

They each think they're the only one expressing love with all of what they're doing and the other person/people can't possibly mean the same thing. They're just being kind.

(It's beautifully frustrating. I do so prefer it when they hear each other in the end though...)

Jimmy is looking to the future, and starting to realise he should maybe be listening to his heart rather than his head

Written for day three of Shetland Fic Fest 2023 for the prompt "season 7 fix-it" because it had to be done

In the end, Jimmy didn’t think of Fran until afterwards when he was curled around Duncan’s spine listening to him snore. He remembered her all in a rush. Wondered what she’d make of him and Duncan tangled together like this. Realised he couldn’t remember what the knots of her vertebrae felt like, whether they were smaller than Duncan’s.

A lump was building in his throat. He bit into the fleshy part of his hand to stop it.

"Hang on, Duncan, I'm just coming in." Jimmy tucked the phone into his top pocket and nudged the boat alongside the mooring. She kissed the buoys with a gentle bump and he jumped onto the quayside to tie her off. He dug out the phone and pressed it to his ear, regretting wasting Duncan's thirty precious monthly minutes. "Sorry, sorry. You were saying?"

"About my release day, aye. I've been thinking it might be best if you weren't here, after all, to pick me up."

Jimmy swapped the phone to his other ear, the landward side, because Duncan suddenly sounded muffled and far away, despite the lack of wind coming off the sea. "Come again?"

"I said, it might be better if I make my own way after they let me out."

Thoughts having watched all of “Shetland” that exists so far (so seasons 1-5) over the past week or so

(NB: I’ve kept this pretty spoiler-free, but I’ll still put it behind a cut for length.)

1. Oh my Gods this is so much better than Broadchurch. Even though Broadchurch has David Tennant etc. in, so I don’t say this lightly.

2. I mean it’s copaganda inevitably but it’s quality telly.

3. The scenery is, unsurprisingly, absolutely glorious and I love it so much.

4. I ship Jimmy/Duncan so much omg and was doing so before the end of season 1. Which has two episodes. ;-)

5. Jimmy’s first two possible canon pairings with women were pretty good also, especially the second. Highly unconvinced by the third.

6. The acting is magnificent throughout.

7. Season 1 is pretty darn good. Season 2 is incredible, as (in a very different way) is season 3. Season 4 is not as good as 2 and 3 but still fairly excellent. Season 5 is... deeply flawed, with especially in the first three episodes some really clumsy handling of the very sensitive subject matter (leading to some thoroughly unfortunate implications), and a massed flock of idiot balls. It gets better towards the end of the season, and the scenes between regular cast members were still spectacular. Basically I loved seasons 1-4 and I loved some of season 5.

8. And the final scene of season 5 made me grin my face off. :-)

9. Tosh. <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 Just the absolute best, I love her.

10. Duncan is such a disaster but Gods he’s so *pretty* and he has this profound sweetness underneath all the nonsense and I have faith in his ability to do better. And he is weirdly good for Jimmy, as friends and co-parents (and, in all the fanfic I’ve been reading, a lot more :-) ). In real life I’d be too exasperated with him for words; in the show I just want to give him a hug and a gentle kick up the bum.

11. Jimmy is so kind and fundamentally decent. I wish he were a realistic portrayal of a police detective in a small community. Also he needs many hugs and ideally some therapy oh Gods. Also also I need at least half of his jumpers.

12. Am trying to suspend disbelief a bit about the accents. Given that an awful lot of characters who grew up in Shetland have accents from Ayrshire, Edinburgh, Glasgow, etc.. ;-) Hooray that Sandy is played by a local boy who apparently misses sheep-shearing whenever he’s not missing his parents’ croft, and has the full-on soft Shetland sound. :-)

13. Rhona is amazing and needs an awesome wife.

14. Cassie is just delightful and a credit to her dad. She frequently has more braincells than either of her fathers.

15. I need to mention the scenery again. <3

16. Especially in seasons 1 and 2 (thus with storylines based on the books), but throughout really, there’s a really compassionate attitude towards mentally ill people, and towards those who are for any reason odd or awkward or uncomfortable to be around. This is a massive fucking breath of fresh air in a murder mystery series.

17. I miiiiight need to write some fic soon.

18. Season 6 just finished filming and season 7 start filming in the autumn. :) :) :) *bounces*

19. This show has left me with a determination to visit Shetland at some point in the next decade or so...

20. ... and an absolutely fricking enormous crush on Mark Bonnar. :D

Also aaaaah I think I’ve read pretty much all of the Jimmy/Duncan fics on AO3. The downside of a rare pair; I’ve been spoiled by stucky and ineffable spouses etc.. On the upside the quality of what’s already on AO3 is *superb*. Consistently really high standard. I had better write at least one myself and try to live up to the others. :-)

Shetland FanFic

(The Dad and Stepdad relationship has always been an interesting balancing act. Duncan and Jimmy have navigated those waters for years. But is there more bubbling under the surface? Can they be more than the dad and stepdad? Is it possible? It is time for them to finally have that talk and find out!)

Jimmy had been the stepfather to Duncan’s daughter, Cassie, for most of her life now. Together Jimmy and Duncan had juggled the strain of raising Cassie after Fran died, leaving all three of them broken and a little shattered. That shared connection of love and loss brought the three of them together closer than ever- the two dads especially. On paper, they had a picture-perfect life like most in Shetland. But in reality, things were more complicated, given the unique past and dynamics they shared. Jimmy loved Cassie with all his heart, but he also was finding he had feelings for Duncan as well. And to his surprise, Duncan was finding he had the same feelings for Jimmy as well, bubbling under the cool and controlled mask he always tried to wear.

That day was like many in Shetland. Cool, windy, clouded sky threatened rain at some point that afternoon. Duncan had come home early from the pub and Jimmy had a rare day off from the station. And with Cassie away at school for the semester, it was a rare chance for the two of them to actually have some alone time.

The two of them sat out in the small garden, shielded from the outside world by the stone wall surrounding the property. The air between them was thick with something unsaid, and Duncan couldn't tear his eyes away from Jimmy's. They had grown close over the years, but they had only really started to be honed with themselves about how close they were recently becoming. Duncan had begun to feel something new. An unfamiliar warmth blazed within him whenever Jimmy was around, causing his heart to flutter and his cheeks to flush. And Jimmy felt it too. A rush he thought he would never feel again, a peace and comfort whenever he and Duncan were together. It was nice. It was becoming familiar. And it was also becoming somewhat addictive.....

a tiny rough little scene from a vague fic idea that'll probably never be written. for context, jimmy and duncan have to share a bed for reasons, and they are being idiots about their feelings.

"I'd never have taken you for a cuddler."

Snuggled up to Jimmy's side, head pillowed on his shoulder and one arm thrown over his middle, Duncan was slightly surprised himself. "Aye, well, mebbe I'm going soft in my old age." He gave Jimmy's stomach a gentle poke. "Like someone else I could name."

"Oi, you." Jimmy batted at the offending hand. "Away, or I'll kick you out of bed and you'll be sleeping on the floor."

"You wouldn't."

"Wouldn't I?" Jimmy let a hint of danger into his voice, its effect somewhat diminished by the smile Duncan could clearly hear. He gave in anyway, not willing to risk this newfound closeness.

"Okay, I'll hush. See? I'm already asleep." He snorted an exaggerated snore to lend credence to his claim.

Jimmy chuckled, the sound a pleasant vibration against Duncan's cheek. "Daft sod."

"Soft git."

"I warned you." He adopted his policeman's voice, but his arm was still looped around Duncan's shoulders and there was no real threat behind the words.

"Ach, you love me."

The words faded into silence and Duncan immediately regretted using that turn of phrase. Far too suggestive for their current position, far too revealing. But then Jimmy's hand made a slow sweep across Duncan's back and he turned his head to rest his chin atop Duncan's crown. His voice, when he finally spoke, had grown soft, his admission a whisper in the quiet dark of the room.

"For my sins."

Duncan swallowed around the lump in his throat. He didn't deserve Jimmy's friendship, let alone anything more. "Or mine."

Jimmy's arm tightened around him in a brief squeeze, his breath ghosting through the fine strands of Duncan's hair when he spoke again, voice low and fond.

"Go tae sleep."
