Morse and friends

As an accompaniment to my earlier post about Morse and loneliness, especially how he sees himself as more alone than he actually is, here are some photos of him with those who consider themselves his friends. All photos from IMdB.

Just rewatched Prey recently and was reminded of a favorite moment—the one and only time Thursday comes over to Morse's flat to discuss a case—or as he put's it, "...have a ponder."

Win and Joan are off visiting the mysterious Aunt Renie and I think that's the reasoning behind Fred being at loose ends and showing up at Morse's door.

The interaction is just lovely. For once they're not at odds. They're colleagues and friends working together like a well-oiled machine.

And this scene includes one of my favorite lines, which is Thursday saying with a completely straight face, "You want me to go into Mr. Bright's office and tell him there's a West African leopard cult operating in Oxford?" Morse wisely (for once) says, "No."

Prophetic words from Morse in Oracle?

Or perhaps a bit more of a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Once he and Thursday have their man, there is this little scene in Thursday's office...

Thursday: You were right, then. And I was wrong. It wasn't the boyfriend.

Morse: Well, don't feel too bad about it. Sometimes you can't see what's staring you in the face. We got there in the end. That's the main thing.

And then it cuts to Morse at Ludo's garden party...

Just how Ludo manages to so thoroughly and quickly win the TRUST of the DS who could find something suspicious in a saint's sock drawer is beyond me.

But regardless of the reasons, it is like Morse himself foreshadowed the coming betrayal with his words to Thursday just minutes before "Sometimes you can't see what's staring you in the face."
