So I've been on a procedural kick lately to fill the Endeavour void.
Two new shows I've been watching are Elsbeth and High Potential. They're basically about quirky (neurodivergent-coded) genius women helping the police solve crime, and they're both entertaining enough, with Elsbeth being the better show imo.
Anyway, it stuck out to me how the main characters' introductions are handled compared to Endeavour, and it only made me miss it more. lol
In both these shows the main first impression is "Wow this woman notices literally everything and is smarter than everyone. She's a little messy but basically has her life together."
Whereas with the Endeavour pilot and first season, at least for me, the main vibe was "Wow this bratty disaster man could be a great detective one day."
You definitely know he's smart, but it's only one of like 10 other traits, and he also fucks up quite a bit. Thursday isn't just there to watch him be amazing. Morse actively needs him in many ways. Now there is of course the element of women-led procedurals being less common, so I think there's overcorrecting going on, but it really strikes me that the pilot came out back in 2011, and it still feels ahead of where detective shows are now.
