ENDEAVOUR 1.02 Fugue
The way everyone comes together to help him in their own ways after he gets stabbed in this episode is so heartwarming and really helps establish an emotional bond between the characters. What's that, Morse? You think you're all alone in the world? Have some strong evidence to the contrary.

"No one is suggesting that Detective Inspector Thursday has any involvement. Not for a moment." "We just need to be sure of him. Word on the wire is he's got pretty tight with Box."

Ask me no more, for fear I should reply; Others have held their tongues, and so can I, Hundreds have died, and told no tale before: Ask me no more, for fear I should reply — How one was true and one was clean of stain And one was braver than the heavens are high, And one was fond of me: and all are slain. Ask me no more, for fear I should reply. -- Alfred Edward Housman

Endeavour: Character Catchphrases and Iconic Lines
Tumblr media
A conversation the other day got me thinking about the idea of catchphrases. Morse never really has one. I'm sure if asked his opinion, he'd call the whole idea pedestrian and clichéd—although by the time we arrive at the Inspector Morse series, "Lew-is!" is a good candidate.
Other characters in Endeavour, however, most certainly have signature phrases or at least frequently used words:
Thursday: Mind how you go
Strange: Matey
Jakes: Wotcher
DeBryn: Shall we say 2 o'clock?
Win: There, then, you'll do, Fred.
In addition, you've also got characters in Endeavour with iconic lines that somehow manage to embody their personalities and/or storylines.  For me, these include:
Thursday: Then I'll have to take off my hat.
Bright: This pelican is an albatross around my neck.
Trewlove:  Maybe I like grim.
Cyril Morse: I never liked the police.
Jakes (In response to Morse asking, "Didn’t you go to Sunday school?"): You don't want to know where I went.
Ronnie Box (as described by Morse): He's a fist with a warrant card.
There are probably more—but that's where my brain stops for now.

That moment...
in ‘Confection’ when you realise an outtake was actually an edit point!
One of my favourite Masterpiece PBS behind the scenes features for Season 6 is 'Endeavour, Season 6: The Cast on Shaun Evans as Director' [x], mostly because of all the outtakes where Shaun is flashing that fantastic smile!
At about the 1min 20sec mark, there's a wonderful outtake from 'Confection' when Shaun looks at Anton Lesser and breaks up. If you run the outtake directly after the actual scene, however...
Tumblr media
...the frames match exactly!
How lovely to think that at the end of any given scene, no matter how dark, that they all could have laughed! In this scene DeBryn is telling Bright and Endeavour about the bullet that killed Fancy!
This knowledge might just get me through the toughest scenes. And also the Morsetache, of course.

I honestly forget that DeBryn isn’t canonically queer, like picturing that man with a woman is just wrong. Like, look at his little bow tie, he’s too cunty for that

What if - the original Inspector Morse was remade with Shaun Evans
Shaun Evans is now 45, so older than John Thaw had been when he first played Morse in the eponymous TV series. Of course, Shaun looks much younger than Thaw did at the time, so let's assume any remake will not happen for at least another 5 years.
But for the sake of argument, let's imagine at least the 13 original novels by Colin Dexter are remade as TV movies between maybe 2030 and 2035. What would the cast look like?
The cops:
Morse would of course be played by Shaun Evans as mandated in Colin Dexter's will.
Strange? Given that Sean Rigby is almost decade younger than Evans IRL, gotta wonder if a different actor would be needed...
Lewis? This is where it gets really interesting because the series could revert to the older Lewis in the books, or stick with the younger one (especially since Endeavour made it a point to mention "A young police cadet, Robert, in Newcastle" in the context of murder victim Andrew Lewis in S9). If keeping with the younger sidekick, perhaps Niall Wright (Callum McCarthy in Hope Street) might fit the role?
The docs:
Max is a no-brainer, with James Bradshaw reprising the role.
Grayling Russell could be dispensed with, as could the fill-in pathologists in the later series of the original IM until Hobson came on.
Laura Hobson - I would love it if someone like Emily Blunt played her, thought that would require a fundamental rethink of Laura as Max's protege and a young pathologist just starting out as ME (which would put her in the mid-30's age range at her first appearance). With Emily being pretty close to Shaun's age (actually just a touch older), that wouldn't work... BUT it would make the flirtation between Hobson and Morse more believable. Or maybe Dakota Blue Richards could transform from Shirley Trewlove to Laura Hobson? She would be the right age, most certainly has the sass to carry off the style espoused by Clare Holman, and was a perfect foil for Shaun in Endeavour...
Other casting ideas for the series that might never be made (tbh, I am not sure if that would be fortunate or otherwise)?
