The Frog
Tumblr media
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2024
The Frog (2024, South Korea)
Director: Mo Wan Il
Writer: Son Ho Young
Mini-review:
Wow, I didn't think I would enjoy The Frog so much. I guess I was in the mood for a dark, propulsive thriller. I've seen some people say it's 'slow', but like... where? This kept me glued to the screen from the very first episode, and it got more and more intense throughout the next ones. It even ventures into psychological horror territory from time to time, which made it even more fun to me. The writing isn't perfect (some of the characters aren't as well developed as they should), but the directing and the acting more than make up for it. Go Min Si turns in a particularly strong performance, and it's clear she gave it her all. I'm not gonna say this is the best thriller k-drama I've seen, but it was definitely enjoyable as hell.

Excuseeeeee meeeeeeee?!
He was fondling floozies in front of her to protect her by pretending he doesn't like her?!
(Which in retrospect makes sense as to why he told them all to get out the moment she left.)
AAAAAAAAAAAA what do you mean he dies soon I want the drama to be about this totally fucked up ship dynamic that I live for aaaaaaaaaaa nooooo give meeeeeeeeeee genius of battle king in love with his own wife but unable to let her knowwwwwwwwww
(The minister can totally join it, do a threesome, of a gang bang with LSH chara for all I care.)
As I was telling @aysekira the last time I had that level of hormonal frenzy was with The Wolf.

Ballerina
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Ballerina (2023, South Korea)
Director & Writer: Lee Chung Hyun
Mini-review:
I'm a huge fan of Jeon Jong Seo and I enjoyed The Call very much, so I was really looking forward to Ballerina, her second collaboration with director Lee Chung Hyun. Thankfully, it didn't disappoint. It's sleek and visually stunning, and Jeon Jong Seo more than rises up to the challenge. She definitely has what it takes to be an action movie star. Tbh, the script and the story are much weaker and unoriginal than in The Call, but Lee Chung Hyun clearly knows how to direct the hell out of an action scene. Also, the movie is pretty short, so it goes straight to the point and it never gets boring. Anyway, I hope these two keep collaborating, cause so far they've been on fire together.
P.S. There's quite a lot of triggering content, and I recommend looking up some warnings before watching.

i just finished watching the new episode and!
i think. it is very, very interesting the way sung-jae's and mr. ji's stories mirror each other.
both end up with one person dead (or, at least fatally injured in nam hae-e's case), both with a mother that are borderline (or maybe completely) toxic and study-obsessed, both have an older sibling that are irreparably damaged by their parent's attitudes towards education and both are just. not alright.
at all.
dong-hui with his pseudo-gratitude/affection and obsession in chi yeol and sung-jae with his constant practice of bottling things up and, more often than not, blindly fllowing his mother's assurances that i'll deal with it.
sure, her rebels by sharing the material with hae-e. but it's only until he has an outside presence that's aware of what's just happened that he realises the true extent of his mother's actions.
sung-jae chose to run away from his problems. dong-hui chose to meet them head on and take action to end them - violently.
and the lack of male figures in their lives - mr. ji's dad is nowhere to be seen, only his uncle who seems to care and step in by reporting him missing. sung-jae's dad - despite moving out, there are no scenes where he reaches out to his children.
if he knows what an influence his wife is on them, why would he not offer them an outlet? an escape from the study mania? he knows what hui-jae is like, how he's changed, but he doesn't even bother to stay in contact with his sons.
they both have very similar stories, but they both care.
dong-hui in a obsessive, all-consuming way; sung-jae in an empathetic, scared-to-show-it way.
they are mirrors and parallels of each other, only years apart. and what does that say?
that more often than not, whether rich or poor, the story repeats itself.
