Ballerina
Tumblr media
Movies watched in 2023
Ballerina (2023, South Korea)
Director & Writer: Lee Chung Hyun
Mini-review:
I'm a huge fan of Jeon Jong Seo and I enjoyed The Call very much, so I was really looking forward to Ballerina, her second collaboration with director Lee Chung Hyun. Thankfully, it didn't disappoint. It's sleek and visually stunning, and Jeon Jong Seo more than rises up to the challenge. She definitely has what it takes to be an action movie star. Tbh, the script and the story are much weaker and unoriginal than in The Call, but Lee Chung Hyun clearly knows how to direct the hell out of an action scene. Also, the movie is pretty short, so it goes straight to the point and it never gets boring. Anyway, I hope these two keep collaborating, cause so far they've been on fire together.
P.S. There's quite a lot of triggering content, and I recommend looking up some warnings before watching.

Thoughts on My Beautiful Bride, Episode 9
It's actually fascinating to see the cop yell at the protagonist for being a banker.
Like, he said bankers are evil for assigning different credit ratings to different people.
It's like he doesn't know how banks work at all.
The money banks loan out doesn't belong to the bank. Those are people's savings.
Also, the protagonist is not even in charge of retail credits, he works in the corporate banking department.

THE NIGHT OWL
GENRES: Historical, Drama
SUMMARY: An adept, blind acupuncturist must balance his family’s livelihood, the health of the royal family, and his personal secret.
THIS MOVIE HAS EVERYTHING: Poison, needles, palace politics, Ming vs Qing, heirs to the throne, night watches, workplace courtships, royal tyrants, magnifying glasses, and lots of medicine.
HOT TAKE: I don't really have any complaints about this one. It's a good what-if historical take on real palace tragedies, it uses cinematic light and day to its advantage, and the stakes are worthy of an edge of your seat position!

I'm watching The Gangster, the Cop, the Devil. It's been on my watchlist for quite a while anyways and then I came across one clip of it in IG and Im like you know what, time to watch it.
Anyway, here I am watching it. Ma Dong Seok is a delight as always, Kim Sung Kyu is appropriately creepy, but omg, what I wouldn't give for someone to tape Kim Moo Yeol's mouth shut. This is unfortunately my first time seeing him act in anything, and tbh I cannot say that I am feeling positive about him after.
His character is a stereotypical cop - all gung-ho, bluster and bravado, mouthy and aggravating, and with the unearned swagger of a muscled gym bro - and its annoying as HECK. He takes all these tropes, injects them with STEROIDS and it is grating on my nerves.
I mean, tbh, I am not here for anything else other than Ma Dong Seok, but like seriously, anytime his character gets some screentime, I am like LORD deliver me from this character.
If you are gonna play a steretotypical hero cop, kindly put your goddamn chest into it.
Rant over. Let's see how I am feeling about him by the end of the movie, but tbh, I am not holding my breath.
edit: tis Kim Sung Kyu ya'll. I got him mixed up with Koo Kyo Hwan.
