all this, and totally not in a cute way. he was given more screentime, better story, better scenes, better romance, better background story, better everything. (except the hairstyle. it was ugly asf). but the question is.. WHY?

Why was the main male character totally sidelined in his OWN show?

Yes. I am questioning the writers and makers of this show.

Jandi-Junpyo barely had romantic scenes, bonding through understanding scenes and every other thing... all of it was given to the second lead. There was no proper introduction to junpyo's childhood and background story like it was for ji hoo.

The FL spends 80% of her time in the show with second lead and people wonder why alot of people can't connect with junpyo-jandi's chemistry.

I still am traumatized with those scenes where The FL again n again breaks ML's heart, betrays him, and treat him as if he isn't important and he is just playing around with her. ML literally spends his time with her family, tries to make her feel special, is thoughtful about her feelings and family issues, gives her the space she needs and even though he was an asshole first but later it was jandi herself who accepted his approach and didn't deny him... then goes to sml.. then again realizes and still doesnt acknowledges ML's feelings and his efforts , he literally puts his efforts to make her happy and to be with her and she says "i guess he is TRYING"

even till the last episode, unnecessarily, sml was still around. after 14-15 episodes, he just became a nuisance cuz if they are not gonna end up together or jandi has fell for junpyo and junpyo being the main character... WHY WAS JIHOO TAKING SO MUCH SCREEN TIME???

Okay now i am just ranting but my point is.. was it the writers plan? was ji hoo the one who was the ml? why tf would the writers do that?

people like ji hoo because his character was given more screentime, depth, meaning, understanding for the viewers.. and still jun pyo overshadowed.

like,, i still can't believe this is a 25 episode drama . maybe it is longer but they later edited it out for 25 episodes? the sidelining of literally the main character is so fucking terrible . i feel so sorry for lee minho.. but so happy that his talent was recognised with this show.

Maybe the jihoo actor was more famous back then? idk what it is about him that made writers/makers do that but all i can say is the whole jihoo plot, his story, bond with jandi and his unnecessarily too much screentine was a nuisance. Totally annoying. i literally had to skip some scenes and watch it after i ended the drama, and still his scenes hold no value. and still kinda confused why junpyo was done dirty like that.

ps: I literally can't hate Gu Jun Pyo after watching this show. No matter how many people say he was toxic and a red flag.. it is jun pyo you will feel bad for cuz it was not ONLY junpyo who was toxic. Jandi, ji hoo were major red flags too.

The Toxicity of the Ji hoo/Jan di relationship Analysis (An Analysis for Ji Hoo)

Yeah as the title says, this is an analysis on Ji hoo/Jan di relationship toxicity with Jan di bashing.

I analyze this for Ji Hoo, and to prove Geum Jan Di as a character is toxic. And does not deserve to be in any relationship at all.

In real life, either relationship would never be condoned. No woman would go for a guy who she quarrels and breaks up with all the time, and no woman would go for a guy who does everything for her, endlessly, with she not doing anything for him. And so is endlessly hurt by her

A lot of people on reddit say BOF sucks because of Geum Jan Di being so annoying and Jan Di not getting together with Ji Hoo, well that’s because it’s not supposed to be a straight drama. So the straight relationships are toxic.

This is going to be an analysis on why Ji hoo/Jan di is toxic.

I hate Geum Jan Di, and I have evidence for why.

She is toxic.

Alright so let’s see the Ji hoo/Jan di relationship. Ji hoo endlessly helps Jan Di and supports her with everything he’s got, but she doesn’t pay anything in return.

Ji Hoo even confessed his heartfelt feelings ‘earning money for the first time in my life since I was born’, but Jan di rejects Ji hoo saying she’ll pretend he didn’t say what he said to Gu Jun pyo at the airport.

Ok that scene aside, it’s so romantic, a guy endlessly helping out and helping a girl with everything he’s got.

Only for the girl. And the girl doesn’t even deserve the guy’s help.

Of course women would think, ‘A Guy endlessly supporting me in whatever I do? I want a guy like that!’

Or ‘A guy endlessly supporting me in whatever I do? That’s so romantic!’

Ok first, you didn’t mention that the girl is in an official romantic relationship with another guy. Who’s the guy’s best friend.

Romantic? It’s toxic. This guy endlessly helps out and supports a girl who’s already in a relationship, with his best friend.

No! He should Move on!

In real life, he would Move on. He would still hold feelings for the girl, but he would not support her endlessly.

That’s the problem I have with Ji hoo/Jan di.

Ji Hoo! He’s hurt

JI Hoo, he’s Hurt endlessly by her, giving all of himself with receiving nothing in return.

JI Hoo! What about our guy Ji Hoo? You guys say, in youtube comments and such, I love Ji Hoo! Wish he had gotten together with Geum Jan Di in the end.

You guys only love the relationship and Ji Hoo, and you want Ji Hoo to be happy. And you think he’ll be happy with Geum Jan Di. She’s his love, she makes him smile and laugh…..

No! You didn’t mention all the times Ji Hoo was hurt endlessly by Geum Jan Di. His heartbroken expressions

In the Long run, being with Jan di would be Toxic for your precious perfect Man Ji Hoo.

Then if the relationship is Toxic, why is it happening?

Because, Ji Hoo is Lonely!

It’s very obvious in the drama. He believes he caused his parents’ death because he playfully covered his parent’s eyes while driving when he was a kid, his grandfather left him, he was abandoned by everyone in his life, his only light was Seo Hyun, who in the end left him for her career after he confessed he had feelings for her (which might not even be real, but out of his loneliness). Made to wait and feel like a useless man in Seo Hyun’s apartment and she chose someone better over him, after he got the courage to follow her to Paris. Comes back, kisses Geum Jan Di in an emotional state, but Geum Jan Di was already ‘taken’ and his best friend Gu Jun pyo saw. So he almost lost Gu Jun pyo, because Jun pyo hated him for some reason, and even though he’s the emotionally injured one, was forced to compete against his best friend for Geum Jan Di’s ‘heart’, and then he endlessly supported Geum Jan Di in Macau and in the end Geum Jan Di heartlessly broke his heart after news of Jun pyo’s engagement.

What person should suffer like this?

It’s a Korean drama and they never say it, but Ji hoo is clearly emotionally Traumatized.

And the drama says Ji hoo is lonely and emotionally abused, ‘Everyone I liked has left me.’ ‘Yet I Keep on getting Greedy’.

He is not getting ‘Greedy’, he is just Normally wanting human connection. But because everyone he ever Loved left him, he thinks it’s wrong.

He thinks it’s wrong to want to Connect with others, to be loved.

This is so sad, for a person. For Ji hoo.

So Jan di with Jun pyo, no Jan Di, no Jun pyo, no Seo hyun…he reconciled with his grandfather after but still had to deal with the mess that was Geum Jan Di. Because for some fucking reason she decided she wanted to be a doctor too

I don’t think he even romantically loves Geum Jan Di, he just fell for her because she was the first one to pay attention to him in his loneliness.

Ji Hoo is not a healthy character to fall in love, he was very Lonely.

And so he endlessly pursues Geum Jan Di with ‘love’ while getting his precious pure heart broken every time.

Any healthy individual…would see that she’s not worth the support. Not worth your support, or going through life with while she doesn’t return your endless support.

But Ji hoo continued to do so, because he doesn’t know what is toxic, and he doesn’t know what is unhealthy, and he doesn’t know what is healthy.

Of course Jan di! Doesn’t know what is toxic and unhealthy either, and so the two continue on pursue in a loving relationship (platonic) which isn’t actually loving at all, but highly toxic to both individuals, especially Ji Hoo.

You don’t be best friends with a man who supports you Too much because of his romantic feelings for you while dating his best friend. Would any woman be as cruel as Geum Jan Di? No, she would know it’s just not right for the guy. You can’t lead a guy on like that! Especially one who has had no parents or family support or even love.

And so it is unhealthy. And fucking toxic.

Geum Jan Di is not an ideal for girls anywhere.

Like only preteen girls would want to be like Geum Jan Di. No one wants to Hurt anyone like that.

From the drama, we see Ji Hoo’s loving side and how dedicated and perfect a Man he is.

But please Remember Ji hoo has his trauma and his Loneliness to the point of saying Everyone he ever loved has Left him.

If you love Yoon Ji Hoo, then please reconsider the Jan di/Ji hoo relationship.

Because Geum Jan Di does not put in any effort in the relationship that was never meant to be at all.

She is not a woman to be in a relationship with.

Even fairytales are better.

Cinderella. The woman actually puts in effort. She has the courage to go on a one night trip to the ball to meet the prince and change her life. Yeah prince charming comes to find her in the end, but Cinderella was the one who got the courage to go.

Ji hoo/Jan di? He just Helps her in everything, including her relationship with Gu Jun pyo, and she just does whatever and he always just supports her and she doesn’t do anything in return. What kind of fucking one-sided relationship is that?

We don’t even speak of romance. Who in real life would be in a friendship with someone you help endlessly, but she doesn’t notice she’s hurting you with her careless words, but you continue to help her?

Just because there’s the added element of ‘romance’ doesn’t make the Ji hoo/Jan di relationship any less toxic.

Yeah sure they became doctors together, supporting each other, oh a relationship as natural as breathing!

My fucking foot. It was just a coincidence and in the end Ji hoo is left with the pain of unrequited love and wow continues to support Jan di until the end.

How romantic! Girls say. Nah women, would you let a guy do this to you in real life? Would you lead a guy along the string like that? When you don’t even have romantic feelings for him? And you’re pursuing another guy.

You just wanted to see a Happy ending.

The problem is, Geum Jan Di. The character herself. She Hurts both boys relentlessly. So there needs to be such extreme measures taken (proposing for Jun pyo) and (supporting her forever for Ji Hoo) to have a Happy ending for the drama.

Yeah it’s romantic. The girl gets together with the guy who endlessly supported her…and she ends up happy.

It’s a romantic happy ending! But only on the outside.

What about the guy? He’s just gonna give like 120% all the while while she barely gives even 20%?

What about Ji hoo?

This is not fucking romantic in real life at all. This is toxic and abusive, even if the girl is too dumb to know.

Yeah I’m calling Jan di dumb because she is. I don’t even mean it as a true insult? Jan di is dumb! She’s a laundry cleaner daughter with a mom who constantly puts her down and so she has low self-esteem but at the same time she’s like her mom she’s spoilt and expects everyone to do everything for her, and she, Geum Jan Di, is not the sort of person who should be in a relationship at all. It’s a drama, so it just happened, but she’s not mature enough to be in a relationship! Her background and life status and just doing whatever, isn’t suitable for relationship material.

Even if Jan Di got together with Woo Bin, what would she do? He’s a mafia heir. She’d likely say ‘Oh you’re so cool’, then she’d get kidnapped, Woo Bin would save her, they would share a romantic moment……and nothing else. She would act the fucking same. She wouldn’t give anything in return. And it’d just be the guy Giving to her all the time.

Which woman wants that.

Such relationships would split up in college anyway. Jan di already proved she can’t handle a long distance relationship

Unfortunately they go to the same college because Shinwa…

Now Gu Jun pyo. He has proved he actually doesn’t like Jan di. When Jan di lost his necklace for the second time, he said, “You really make it hard for a person.” Gu Jun pyo showing maturity! While Geum Jan Di remains the same.

He was only forced to go after her or else she would fucking die because of him, and who wants a death on their back for someone they care about enough?

Also their relationship is fucking toxic. Especially near the end, Gu Jun pyo doesn’t remember her. What does Geum Jan Di do? She does not wait, she does not move on like a normal person. She fucking forces him to remember her, she risked her life again, and what the fuck was Gu Jun pyo supposed to do when Jan di threw herself into the pool? Of course his memory would Start up when someone is in danger, and he goes to save her.

God, women would you do this in real life? Your bf doesn’t remember you after a car accident, so you throw yourself into a pool praying and hoping he will remember you. Or worse, just forcing him to remember you.

Geum Jan Di is fucking toxic.

People care about her enough, and she always screws up her life so people will remain endlessly concerned about her. She forces both boys to remain in ‘love’ with her, without knowing.

Of course they’re all in high school, rich heirs, not a normal circumstance, and no one would criticize Jan Di for her toxic behavior.

So I’m here criticizing her because we all know, this is true. Her actions are fucking toxic in real life. And I don’t understand people who love Geum Jan Di at all.

You want a good male lead female lead but still poor girl drama? Go and watch Cinderella and the 4 knights. The female lead there is actually good, actually turns down a guy directly and doesn’t lead him on. So ends a stupid love triangle. She’s also poor but hardworking, responsible, and she deserves the guy. She also wants money like Geum Jan Di. She leaves like Geum Jan Di, but she doesn’t cause so much life-risking trouble for anyone. No Guilt tripping the guy. Her mother fucking sucks even more than Geum Jan Di, makes her sleep out on the balcony. Insults her like Fuck. Only keeping her there for the Father. And yeah the guy endlessly pursues a girl who’s not the FL, kind of like Ji hoo, does anything for her, comes running at her slightest trouble but in the end realizes his mistake and who he loves now. And he fucking rejects her, letting her walk to the shopping mall by herself while he goes to search for his new love, it is so fucking healthy for both the girl and himself. The girl realized she was wrong too, she was a bitch and told the girl FL that the guy held the same feelings for her.

There is actually Communication in the drama! Anyone, you want a good FL and good FL and ML romance, just go check out Cinderella and the 4 Knights. They’re spoiled rich heirs but they act human and the things they do, could happen in real life. There’s drama, but there’s human life and human connection. Like you know one guy who likes the girl just because harem, he passionately likes the girl and even composed a song for her, he Moves on in the end like a Normal person and focuses on his band. With people saying ‘So you experienced First love…” Normal guy. Normal life. And the guy who was toxic and bossy to her, like she had to pretend to be his fiancé for money, you know what she actually turns him down. No Gu Jun pyo/Jan di relationship with both of them quarrelling and breaking up all the time

And that’s all. The Drama is Handled Badly. Of course, the target audience was Preteen girls who just wanted someone to love them, a guy to love them and do everything for them, which is what both Jun pyo and Ji Hoo did for Jan Di. And nobody will blame those preteen girls, especially with whatever patriarchy. But in Real fact? Nothing in the drama that happened in real life, would be Healthy at all.

Of course if you saw it from the perspective of Gu Jun Pyo/ Yoon Ji Hoo, you would get a Different perspective. But this analysis is not to talk about that. So whatever. I believe the drama wasn’t meant to be Straight and is hiding the real pairing of Jun Pyo/Ji Hoo which is why the relationships were so toxic (Korea obviously didn’t support Homosexuality then) but that’s another story. Why have the 2nd Season of BOF come out like 10 years + after the drama too? When being gay is widely accepted enough in the world.

Jun pyo and Ji hoo aside, they just casted a bad character in Geum Jan Di, who did not deserve to fall in love at all, because she didn’t know she was toxic. And the actress too, no wonder they’re changing the actress for the second Season. She was just so annoying

So the drama is for fantasy, but in reality, no respectable human being would accept it. No teenage to adult man or woman would support the toxic relationships in the drama.

Especially not for the precious loved forever Ji Hoo.

Review: Boys Over Flowers

*this review will contain spoilers!*

Hi everyone! This is going to be an extremely long, unsolicited recap of all my thoughts about Boys Over Flowers. I don't know a single person in my real life who has watched this, so I'm using this blog as my space to infodump because this show has become my new hyperfixation. If anyone at all ends up reading this, I really appreciate it! But this is mostly entirely for myself lol.

As someone who is pretty deep into the shoujo anime world and just recently getting into kdramas, I have heard of this show in passing many times. Kkotboda Namja is referenced in Korean media a lot and Hana Yori Dango is lauded as a classic shoujo in the manga sphere, so I figured it might be good to watch the show just to be able to get all the references and consume a piece of shoujo history. Originally, I thought it would be a mindless watch that I might have to force myself to finish; I started off concerned about getting through 25 episodes, but in the end, I ended up wishing there were more lol.

I'm gonna be honest, when I first started watching it, I was like uhhh this is... kinda bad. especially in the beginning. But I became endeared to the quirks I originally criticized. The slow motion dramatic replay shots, the shaky camera, the questionable acting skills all are an essential part of the show itself.

In general, the story was more compelling than I was expecting. But the characters were undoubtedly the best part of the show for me. I always find myself getting attached to media where characters are the focus, and I believe that's why I enjoyed this so much. So I am going to go into each character a bit more in depth.

Thoughts on Jandi

As far as shoujo protagonists go, Jandi is pretty quintessential and standard. She is poor, she is hardworking, she is kind. We've all seen this before. But I always liked her, and she grew on me even more as the series went on. She has the ever-present shoujo 'hard working poor girl' trait, but the show took that to a more serious level than I was expecting. The arc where she had to essentially raise her little bother by herself forced her to mature so quickly, which felt very realistic to me.

I also really loved how much of a 'girl's girl' she was; as far as earlier episodes go, the episode that focused on Minji was one of my favorites. I loved how she called out those popular girls on their hypocrisy for criticizing Minji's plastic surgery when they've all had surgery themselves. She also was such a good friend to both Minji and Gaeul and a very strong, assertive person.

As far as her indecisiveness goes, that is kind of a requirement for being a shoujo protagonist in a love triangle, but it did still get on my nerves even though I was fully anticipating it.

Thoughts on F4 (ranked in order of how much I liked them)

Yijung

Yijung was my favorite F4 boy by far. I just thought he had the most interesting and complex backstory. His struggle with his parents was very humanizing and the way he handled it so poorly felt like a realistic response to that kind of trauma. Ultimately, he made bad choices, but in an understanding and forgivable way that made him complex, not unlikeable (unlike someone else... but more on that later).

Jihoo

Jihoo was another character I grew to be very fond of. I was interested in his backstory a lot too, and although we knew from the beginning that he experienced a tragic loss as a child, learning that he carried the guilt of thinking he killed his family for 15 years really gave extra context to his stoicness and sadness. His reunion arc with his grandfather brought me to tears several times, and it really gave his character a lot more depth. My biggest issue with Jihoo is that I felt like he was almost too perfect sometimes; it's why I liked the grandfather reunion arc so much, I thought it gave him some much needed flaws.

Junpyo

Speaking of flaws, look who it is! Obviously, I have a lot of conflicted feelings on Junpyo. As someone who is actually very open minded about redemption arcs, I didn't have too much of an issue with him being a bully at the beginning, but his, truthfully, abusive tendencies were such a turn off and felt completely unnecessary. Unlike Yijung, Junpyo's trauma/bad choices made him extremely unlikable and nearly unforgivable. The constant physical violence against completely innocent people and his unwillingness to listen to Jandi explain herself were hard to watch, knowing that he's one of the romantic leads that we're supposed to be rooting for. I also felt like until the final arc, any character development he had gotten just kept undoing itself every time he found a new thing to get angry about. Despite all this, I enjoyed what his character became towards the end of the story. I just wish it wasn't such a painful and unnecessary journey for him to finally become that way.

Woobin

Woobin was kind of a disappointing character in general; I can only assume that he was a bigger character in the manga and they just didn't have time to really develop him in the show, because that's pretty much the only valid explanation for his lack of substance. At the beginning of the show, Yijung and Woobin got less screentime than Junpyo/Jihoo did, but as Yijung started to get more development, Woobin became even more noticeably lacking. They threw in that one scene where he was stressing over being the son of a mafia boss or something (which felt completely out of left field by the way) but because it was the only scene where he was given any backstory it might as well not have existed at all. Overall, he was nice to Jandi and a good friend and I enjoyed him in all the F4 group scenes, I just wish he was a bit more of a fully developed character.

Other Characters

Before I get into the friend characters, I wanted to say that something I really loved about this show was how genuinely kind all the older female characters were to Jandi. For some reason I was expecting most of them to secretly be evil or mean but they were all extremely kindhearted and helpful people, which just made the viewing experience better. Even Minji, who was literally the only one who actually did turn out mean, was able to reconcile with Jandi and end their friendship on a neutral/positive note.

Gaeul

I loved Gaeul from the start, I thought she was so adorable and the perfect best friend character for a shoujo. I honestly wasn't even expecting her to be a fully fleshed-out secondary character in the show, I thought she would just be Jandi's coworker who she gossiped with on occasion. But the fact that she became such a major player in the story made me very happy. I also really loved her with Yijung and was practically screaming at the screen for them to get together, but more on that later.

Jaekyung

Jaekyung was interesting. She was a little ditzy and out of touch, but extremely kindhearted despite her wealthy background. I think her introduction into the show, which subsequently threw a curveball into the relationship of Jandi x Junpyo, came at a good time. I found it refreshing that she was always nice and friendly to Jandi, but also didn't want to give up on Junpyo just because Jandi liked him. My biggest issue with Jaekyung was that her concession at the end of the wedding felt a little out of left field, considering how adamant she had been previously about her pursuit of Junpyo. But based on the nature of her personality, I can see that being believable. I also wish she made another appearance after the wedding arc was over, but we didn't see her again after that :(

Junhee

Junhee was yet another character that I expected to be kind of bitchy/mean but who turned out to be extremely cool and nice. The literal only thing that bothered me about her was that I couldn't fathom how she and Junpyo were supposedly raised in the same home but turned out so different, lol. I guess it's a testament to how girls vs. boys were treated in their patriarchal household, but still jarring.

The Romance

I want to start off by saying that I'm someone who is ok with love triangles. I think there's a lot of people who are tired of them and don't like them, but I am okay with it so long as it's interesting.

That being said, when it comes to love triangles I think a lot of people conflate the character they like better with the character the protagonist very clearly wants more. To me (and to most people I'd assume) Jihoo was just overwhelmingly the better choice. I'd go as far as to say he's the objectively better choice. He was always a million times more kind and thoughtful than Junpyo and truly loved Jandi for almost the entire show. However, I could never fully see him being endgame because Jandi was simply more focused on Junpyo and had more history with him.

I know this is a hot take, but I actually really enjoy the 'bickering couple' trope. I think a little back and forth roasting of each other is fun and entertaining! But bickering is not the same thing as genuine cruelty and one sided bullying. Which is pretty much what was happening at the beginning of the story. However, by the time Junpyo finally mellowed out, I really grew to love his dynamic with Jandi. The teasing was just that; teasing, and not bullying anymore. I just wish there was about 200% more of that dynamic and 100% less of whatever the hell they were doing in the first 2/3rds of the show.

As for couples outside of the main trio, I was the BIGGEST Gaeul/Yijung shipper from the minute they first interacted. I cared way more about them than the main love triangle and was on the edge of my seat whenever they showed up. My biggest criticism of them though is that it took WAY too long. And believe me, I can handle a slow burn, but at a certain point it felt so dragged out that I almost stopped caring (it wasn't confirmed canon until the literal last 10 minutes of the whole show lol). Of course, I was still pleased, but man! Give me a break.

The Show In General

I think it became obvious to me early on that this is like, the mother of all shoujos. Most of the common shoujo tropes I mentioned in this review probably either originated or were popularized by both this show and the original manga. It really set a standard and became iconic, despite its many flaws.

(Side note, I hope I'm not in the wrong for still calling this kdrama a shoujo, I think it being based on a shoujo manga makes it a fair enough label but correct me if I'm wrong)

I also just started reading the manga and wow, they uh... toned some stuff down for the show didn't they? I do like it though, it's different. But I can definitely see why some changes were made from the manga to the show. So far out of all the characters, Jihoo and Junpyo's manga versions feel the most different from their kdrama equivalents, which is a bit surprising as they are the main characters. But we'll have to see if that changes as I get further in.

I also am aware of the several other adaptations of Hana Yori Dango such as the Japanese drama and Meteor Garden (although I am put off by the fact that it's 50+ episodes?? are they an hour long too? if so... I'm not sure about that one) but I knew Boys Over Flowers/Kkotboda Namja was the one I wanted to start with due to its popularity, and I think that was a good choice.

This is a 15 year old show but I know there is still somewhat of an active fanbase for it on here so if you're a hardcore Hana Yori Dango stan please go easy on me! These are just my opinions so take them with a grain of salt.

So I finally finished watching Healer and I can't believe I slept on it! Because it's actually so good?!! Like WHA!!!!! 😭😍😭

But then again, you can't blame me, considering it was aired in year 2015 👀 and I only started watching k-dramas from last year. So there's that too 🌝

I guess I kinda owe thanks to 'Marry my husband' and 'Welcome to Samdal-ri'. Because when I was looking up for new content to watch I saw Min young and Ji-chang names in the cast and was like 'Hey! I know them! I have seen their dramas recently!' So thank you MMH and WTS 🥹💛

As for Healer, yup you are right; I am going to watch it again 🙈 still not over the feels it give me in each and every episode, ranging from happiness to angst to fluffiness 😍🤩

I won't be lying but I was a bit disappointed with the way they ended the last episode. Too much stuff crammed in it and still some questions were left unanswered.

But oh well, such is life 🥲 you don't get everything ( I would have like them to see them get married)
