1943 09 Knight's Cross - Robert Taylor
Note: artistic license here. The scene depicts one of the Shturmovik shot down during combats in July-August, but Hartmann plane has the markings after his promotion to squadron leader of 9/JG 52 in autumn of 1943, but he scored no victories against the Ilyushin-2 until spring 1944.
Erich Hartmann in his Me109 closes in to within 100 metres of a Russian Ilyushin II, one of his many close encounters high over the Eastern Front. One name stands out above all others in the annals of air fighting – Erich Hartmann. His prowess in combat became legend even before the course of WWII was run. His 352 aerial victories is a record that is never likely to be surpassed. As the deeds of the great aces of WWII become misted in time, his name above all, will be remembered for his astonishing record.Supreme flying skills with the courage and ability to push his aircraft to the very limit, were his trade mark. His method of attack was to approach at high speed and get in so close to his adversary ‘ that his aircraft filled my windshield’ before firing his guns. This required great flying skill, considerable nerve, and was not without its problems: On eight occasions Hartmann’s own aircraft was brought down by the debris of his opposite number. Messerschmitt Bf 109G-6 of Leutnant Erich Hartmann, Staffelkapitän of 9/JG 52, Novozaporozhye (Ukraine), October 1943.

Future Oberst and Ritterkreuz mit Eichenlaub, Schwertern und Brillanten (Knight's Cross with Oak Leaves, Swords and Diamonds) holder, Major Hermann Graf. Seen here as a Major, he would claim 212 victories from about 830 missions and was Geschwaderkommodore of JG 50 and JG 11 before ending the war as Geschwaderkommodore of JG 52. Surrendering his unit to the Americans on 8 May 1945, they were handed over to the Russians. Graf spent four years in Siberia before being released in 1949. He was the first pilot in history to claim 200 victories and died in 1988. For more, see my Facebook group - Eagles Of The Reich
