One of the most unrealistic things Fellowes ever did was have so many men in their mid thirties alive and available post WWI, happy to patiently wait around for the Blessed Mary Crawley to come to a decision, with seemingly no background or baggage of their own while Mary comes with a complete and complicated life story.

Tony? An on and off dalliance with Mabel Lane Fox.

Evelyn? Broke off an engagement, it was implied because he was still hopeful Mary might pick him after all.

Henry? Nothing at all. I'd buy a "fuckboy who never settled" backstory for him, though.

Charles? Now listen up. What if he reacts to George like he does because ... he's a father himself? He's used to handling the kid while his wife was otherwise occupied? He's a widower who lost his wife to the Spanish Flu pandemic? Something?

Something that would've given Mary more to think about and choose from, apart from which one makes the prettiest puppy eyes at her?

That's the main problem with Mary's Men and why the later seasons were comparatively meh. No depth at all.
