Carbon Fiber Silk Moss

Carbon Emissions are at the forefront of the Anthropocene. It is the defining characteristic of humanity’s effect on the Earth’s global ecological state of being since the Industrial Revolution, as stated by Paul Crutzen.(12) Carbon Emissions are also the main talking point in today’s conversations regarding Global Warming and the footprint that we as humans are leaving behind us and for our planet and our pervasive disruption of the planet’s homeostasis. There is no doubt in the mind of those dedicated to repairing or decreasing the harm done to the ecosystem of our planet that carbon emissions created by humans need to be evaluated, reduced, and some how recycled.

As of now there is no pragmatic proposal for the recycling of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere, and the photosynthetic organism that already exist on earth are not efficient enough and not substantial enough in number to maintain or overtake the pace of human’s carbon emissions(14).Photosynthetic organisms on Earth on only adapted and evolved to maintain a natural balance of shifts between CO2 emissions. Currently 40 billion tons of carbon dioxide are released into the atmosphere each year(10) with 40% of it being absorbed into the ocean(1). Carbon dioxide is emitted in too high a quantity for the Earth’s natural processes to maintain equilibrium- this has resulted in a warming of the globe that is a detriment to all inhabitants on Earth. In addition to global warming, the absorption of CO2 by the ocean has led to ocean acidification. Ocean acidification, though it sounds unpleasant in general, is especially terrible for any aquatic life that has evolved to use calcification to survive such as crabs, diatoms, and coral. Coral losing its ability to calcify its exoskeleton ultimately is a detriment to the entirety of biodiversity in the ocean.

So I propose that we take inspiration from photosynthetic organisms that already utilize CO2, but also implement a biological system that repurposes carbon in addition to utilizing it for its own biological needs. This organism would resemble a black moss to maximize its absorption of sunlight while not requiring as much energy as is needed by organisms with animal cells. The waste would take the form of long, thin, stands of carbon. The black moss would process the basic elements it absorbed and release carbon fiber “silk” much like a silk worm. This moss would be housed in an area where it could be mostly contained and harvested. A second variety of moss would be created to address the carbon dioxide in the ocean- it would have an additional adaptation that focused on desalination of water. This form of moss would be cast like a net on a tight mesh to pass through the water and would be retrieved every few months to harvest the carbon fiber silk.

As carbon is 27% of the atomic weight of CO2, every year nearly 11 billion tons of carbon is released into the atmosphere; 6.55 billion tons remain in the atmosphere, and 4.37 are absorbed into the ocean. With maximum efficiency, every year, if everything else stayed the same, carbon silk moss could produce 11 billion tons of raw materials to be used in a myriad of ways including buildings, bridges, cars, airplanes, shuttles and artificial muscles(6).

Carbon fiber is five times as strong and light than steel, and twice as light and 5 times more rigid than aluminum(6). Any fabrication where steel or aluminum is used for its structural rigidity and strength can instead use carbon fiber. About 1.5 billion tons of steel are produced each year(7), and its production results in 5% of a year’s CO2 emissions(4). Carbon silk moss could take the place of this industry and remove 5% of the global emissions in the process, not to mention the fact that carbon silk moss farms could be local to areas of industry and reduce the amount of transportation normally needed to get materials to construction sites or even to processing plants. Ideally, by creating a simple and efficient process of creating a strong, raw material it would reduce the cost of construction projects, thereby motivating further construction and removal of outdated technology that would be far less efficient.

An example of what carbon fiber equivalents to steel counterparts- the average car would only use 480 lbs. of carbon fiber for its frame instead of the current average of 2,400 lbs. of steel(3). This would allow for the creation of 10,000 cars that would have frames that were 5 times as strong if we only used the carbon harvested from one year’s worth of carbon emissions. Over 20,000 cars could be made the entirety of one year’s emissions if the frame had the same strength as its steel counterpart- and compared to the 2016 record of creating over 70 million passenger cars, there would be no shortage of ways to use the new raw material. In addition to creating lighter cars, this also makes those cars much more fuel efficient whether it uses renewable or non-renewable energy. By decreasing its weight by 40 or so percent, the energy required to propel the car forward is drastically decreased. This is only one way that carbon fiber could be used to make a more efficient world while also managing to decrease the emission of carbon by replaced industries and to reduce the amount of fuel needed to operate in day to day modern life.

Inspirations

The creation of an Anthropocene with good effects on both the world and the organisms within

it requires creativity and new ways of approaching old problems. This class has gone over several artists’

examples of ways to approach the Anthropocene. The general vein that I, myself, feel most in tune with

and most excited by is that of biotechnology and biomimicry.

By reviewing the experiences and evolutionary adaptations of other organisms, we can find what aspects of reality we may wish to replicate and do so through biomimicry or through the creation of entirely new organisms.

I agree with Janiene Benyus’s idea that we humans are regularly under the impression that we

are the smartest things in the room, so to speak. We do not consider the brilliance or ingenuity of the

other organisms around us and how they go about building fantastic structures, and living sustainably

within our ecologic system, Earth. I think that looking at the way that other organisms navigate the

world, both in their natural evolutionary physical development, and through their specialized senses,

will help us as people come up with new ways to look at the situations of living as humans on Earth(2). By following the model put forth by Benyus, first we ask how nature manages to recycle carbon dioxide, as carbon dioxide is not a strictly human invention. Within the realm of nature, carbon dioxide is recycled and used by photosynthetic organism which absorb carbon dioxide, water, and energy from sunlight are used to create sugar and oxygen. So that provides us with a place to begin solving our problem. This is where I make the departure from Benyus and move into the speculative future postulated by Freeman Dyson’s “Our Biotech Future”(5). Biotechnology or genetic engineering could then be used to synthesize an entirely new organism that could utilize the natural processes created by nature and be enhanced and manipulated toward the specific end of carbon recycling and repurposing.

One project that was conceptualized in the 1980’s, was that of Francoise Bastide and Paolo Fabbri’s “Ray Cats”(8). This is a project that also proposed the creation of an organism with specific physical and biological processes that accomplished a need presented by modern society. These cats would be engineered to have a bioluminescent glow that would activate when it came in a certain proximity of nuclear radiation as a way to warn humans of the potential for radiation poison.

I was also inspired by specific projects in the class that dealt with carbon utilization as well as the idea of genetically modified organisms, namely Daan Roosegaarde’s “Smog Free Project”(7) which filtered air and produced compact cubes of carbon that was later used to create jewelry. I was also intrigued by Yoldas Pinar’s “Ecosystem of Excess”(9) which explored new organisms that could emerge as a result of the modern Anthropocene.
