BEARS DOMINATE BIG SPLASH
#4 Cal Earns Largest Win Ever Over #3 Stanford
STANFORD – Closing out the regular season Friday at No. 3 Stanford, the No. 4 California women's water polo team defeated the Cardinal in historical fashion, 11-6 behind huge performances by goalkeeper Isabel Williams and attacker Elena Flynn.
Williams had 15 saves for the fifth time this season and Flynn poured in a Golden Bear career-high five goals as they led Cal to its largest margin of victory over Stanford (16-5, 4-2) since 1997. Along with helping hold the Cardinal to a season low in goals, Williams also became the second player in program history to reach 800 career saves.
Flynn single-handedly outscored Stanford in the opening half, pouring in her fourth goal on her fifth attempt in the final seconds of the second quarter. She tied a season high with five goals, firing in all five from distance.
It didn't take long for the Bears (15-5, 4-2) to take control of the game. On their first possession, senior Maddie DeMattia collected a pass in traffic from Claire Rowell and wrapped it around the defense for a slick backhand goal. The Bears held the lead the rest of the way.
Flynn put Cal ahead 3-0 with back-to-back goals midway through the first. In the closing moments of the period, junior Jessie Rose found senior Reagan Whitney in deep for a composed finish in front of goal, making it 4-1.
Looking to flip the script before things got too out of hand, Stanford earned a penalty on the first play of the second quarter. However, for the fourth consecutive game, Williams forced a penalty miss, remaining in a central position while extending her right arm out to stop the shot in its tracks. The Bears continued to pour it on from there, converting a pair of 6-on-5s with a goal by junior Rozanne Voorvelt and a quick strike from straightaway by Flynn to go up 6-1.
The Cardinal started to get its offense on track with two goals late in the half, but the Bears had an answer on both occasions. Voorvelt found senior Maryn Dempsey wide open on the left side to fire one into the top corner. With two seconds left on the clock, Flynn slotted in another shot from deep center, giving her four goals to Stanford's three at the break.
The second half provided a slow offensive start from both sides, but a pair of back-breaking goals by Rose and yet another penalty save by Williams quelled any chance of a late comeback. Flynn beat the shot clock and rocketed in her fifth goal at the 3:37 mark of the fourth to give the Bears their largest lead of the day, 11-5. She now owns team highs in goals (38), five-goal games (2) and four-goal games (4).
With their upset win, Cal now heads into the MPSF Championship in Indiana as a #2 seed. They are one of the few teams that will have a winning record against other top-5 nationally-ranked teams.
No. 5 California 11, No. 3 Stanford 6 Cal 4 4 1 2 – 11 Stan 1 2 2 1 – 6 Cal Goals: Elena Flynn 5, Jessie Rose 2, Maryn Dempsey, Maddie DeMattia, Rozanne Voorvelt, Reagan Whitney Stan Goals: Sophie Wallace 2, Christina Hicks, Eleanor Facey, Kamryn Barone, Skyler Jones Cal Saves: Isabel Williams 15 Stan Saves: Maya Avital 6

Here’s the link to the Great Vowel Shift video Lark talked about It has just as much kissing and talking as you'd expect from a Rainbow Rowell story - but far, far more monsters.Today we are discussing chapters 82 and 83 of Carry On by Rainbow Rowell, including: the question of whether Simon was the Chosen One a serious inquiry into how one uses Bohemian Rhapsody to steal magic the blessing of Agatha’s comic relief and so much more! Baz would be having a field day with all this, if he were here-it’s their last year at the Watford School of Magicks, and Simon’s infuriating nemesis didn’t even bother to show up.Ĭarry On is a ghost story, a love story, and a mystery. His mentor’s avoiding him, his girlfriend broke up with him, and there’s a magic-eating monster running around wearing Simon’s face. Half the time, Simon can’t even make his wand work, and the other half, he sets something on fire. While Baz might be evil, and a fanged vampire, and as much as he is a complete git, he’s probably right. Simon Snow is the worst Chosen One who’s ever been chosen.

My Snowbaz playlist!
So many songs remind me of Simon & Baz’s relationship in Carry On by Rainbow Rowell so I was inspired to create this playlist of songs that chronicle their love story!
Also yes I know there are a lot of Taylor Swift songs but it’s not my fault she is the master of love songs so..
1. obsessed // Miley Cyrus // Simon’s POV (point of view) // the first quarter of the novel when Simon can’t stop obsessing over Baz’s absence from Watford.
2. ocean eyes - astronomyy remix // Billie Eilish // Baz’s POV // Baz’s feelings toward Simon at the beginning of the novel.
3. bloodsport // Raleigh Ritchie // Baz’s POV // I actually found this song on Rainbow Rowell’s Carry On playlist & I loved it so much that I added it here! Simon & Baz’s feud from Baz’s perspective.
4. untouchable // Taylor Swift // Baz’s POV // the scene where Simon shares his magic with Baz in their room & they’re surrounded by stars.
5. invisible // Taylor Swift // Baz’s POV // basically the love triangle of Simon, Agatha & Baz from Baz’s perspective lol.
6. bloodstream // Ed Sheeran // Baz’s POV // Baz’s suicidal thoughts near the end of chapter 60 when he starts the forest fire.
7. hold on // Delta Goodrem // Baz’s POV // ‘and then he kissed me’ !!!!! & ‘Simon Snow is still going to die kissing me. Just not today.’
8. touch it // Ariana Grande // Simon’s POV // chapter 62, specifically the conversation next to the fire in Baz’s room.
9. closer // Tegan and Sara // Both POVs // their night spent next to the fire in Baz’s room.
10. smoke // BOBI ANDONOV // Both POVs // same scene as song number 9 lol but I love both songs a lot so I couldn’t delete one.
11. delicate // Taylor Swift // Both POVs // at this point in the story, their relationship is in an extremely delicate state & they both need to say to each other what is on their mind: chapter 64.
12. born bob dylan // The Veronicas // Baz’s POV // Baz’s difficulty in expressing to Simon how much he truly loves and cares for him.
13. dancing with our hands tied // Taylor Swift // Both POVs // this song perfectly captures Simon & Baz’s relationship at this point & their argument in Chapter 64. Baz points out that them being on different sides of a war, the fact that they are meant to be enemies will prevent them from ever being in a relationship while Simon promises that everything will work out & they can be together. In my mind, the first verse is Baz’s perspective, second verse is Simon’s perspective and chorus & bridge is both POVs.
14. how you get the girl // Taylor Swift // Both POVs // if you replace “you” with Simon and “the girl”, “she” & “her” with Baz in the song’s lyrics, then you get the scene where Simon comes back to Baz after he left with Penny and Agatha.
15. square one // Jessie J // Simon’s POV // ‘I came back because I was afraid of what might happened if I didn’t. Baz might pretend that nothing had ever happened between us. He’d make me feel like I dreamt this whole thing - like I was a maniac and a moron for believing he’d ever felt something for me.’
16. she’s not him // Miley Cyrus // Simon’s POV // Simon’s feelings toward Agatha at this point & him choosing Baz over her in his mind.
17. this love // Taylor Swift // Baz’s POV // Baz’s feelings toward Simon coming back <3
18. beautiful disaster - live // Kelly Clarkson // Baz’s POV // ‘”but you can have … this. If you want it.” I do.’
19. treacherous // Taylor Swift // Simon’s POV // “’I want to be your boyfriend. Your terrible boyfriend.”’
20. hungry eyes // Eric Carmen // Both POVs // this song doesn’t really correlate to a specific scene, it just reminded me so much of them. :)
21. end game // Taylor Swift // Both POVs // I added this because at one point Simon says: ‘You have to pretend that you get an endgame. You have to carry on like you will; otherwise, you can’t carry on at all.’ So I thought it would be cute to put in this song that they both have found their endgame. And the lyrics fit too so, why not?
22. true love // P!nk // Both POVs // this song is basically them in a nutshell. It describes them so perfectly it’s so funny!
23. be still // The Fray // Baz’s POV // Baz consoling Simon after the death of the Mage.
24. you take my breath away // Queen // Baz’s POV // this song is such a beautiful declaration of love & I think at the end of the novel, Baz is finally able and ready to actually tell Simon how much he means to him.
25. the louvre // Lorde // Both POVs // ‘everyone is looking at us- Everyone dancing. Everyone standing around the courtyard, drinking punch … all standing with their punch glasses stalled on the way to their lips. “They’ll know,” I say. “They’ll talk about it.” … “Baz, you’re actually, literally the only thing I have to lose. So as along as doing gay stuff in public doesn't make you hate me, I don't really care.”’
26. delicate // Taylor Swift // Both POVs // is this deja vu? haha but yes I put delicate again as a sort of “reprise” because at this point in the story, the scene in the epilogue when they’re dancing, their relationship is again in a delicate state & they again need to communicate some important things with each other.
27. carry on // fun. // Both POVs // a perfect song to end the playlist. Perfectly sums up the novel and where we leave Baz & Simon <3
If you want to listen to the playlist on Spotify, here’s the link: https://open.spotify.com/user/rrosesmusic/playlist/6tKemvoPUt238mrMySDB3z?si=uIw_Hd2qSSmgBgxyOmHINg
hope you like it!

Say you love me
A song-inspired fic for the Carry On Countdown
listen to the song here
Simon
I’ve never been much of a talker.  Elocution was always difficult for me because even the slightest nuance could cause the spell to go awry.  Conversations with me are often punctuated with silences, and I personally don’t mind it but some people feel the need to fill every space with speech, and I can tell that talking to me exhausts them.  Penny’s the exception, she always knows what to say.
Baz would use this against me in school.  Use your words was a taunt that came up almost weekly in our room, usually followed by a sneer from him and a growl from me.
But of course, that was before everything.
Now it’s like our silences are conversations of their own.  They can say just as much or nothing at all, and they never feel out of place.
           Unbelievable, how far we’ve come.
It’s a Monday.  Baz is at the flat, Penny is out.  I’m sprawled across the sofa, my head in Baz’s lap.  He’s on his phone and his free hand tangles in my hair like I’m a cat.  Neither of us say anything, and neither of us need to.  The radio in the corner is playing quiet pop and maybe pop isn’t my first choice in music and I know it’s not Baz’s, but we don’t change the station. Anyway, they haven’t played anything too horrible yet.
           “Baz?”
           “Mm?”
           “What are you thinking?”
He looks down at me.  “Not much,” he shrugs, “just that I need to move my legs.”
“Too bad,” I smile, “I’m not going anywhere.”
“That’s a shame,” he smiles back.  “Guess you’ll have to carry me around when they fall asleep and I can’t walk.”
I laugh at the image of me trying to carry him (not that I haven’t thought about it) (and fully intend on attempting it sometime).
A new song begins on the radio, much quieter than the stuff they’ve been playing for the last half hour.  It starts with a simple beat, and then a woman sings low and soulful.  It’s steady and warm, and my eyes drift closed listening to it.
At the second verse, I realize Baz is humming along to it, and I open my eyes again.  “You know this song?”
“Jessie Ware, ‘Say You Love Me’,” he says like I should know it, too.  “It plays in the shops all the time.”
The song slips into the chorus, and Baz goes back to humming, and something about the slow beat and quiet guitar has me wanting to sing, even though I don’t know how it goes.  I can feel Baz shift, and at first I assume it’s because his legs hurt but then I realize he’s rocking with the music.
I get up abruptly, and for a second the blood rushes to my head as I stand, but I take a deep breath and my vision clears again. “Dance with me.”
           Baz stops humming.  “Now?”
“No, after the song is over.  Obviously.”
He stands up slower than I did.  “You’re sure you want to dance with me, with my numb legs?”
I grin and drape my arms over his shoulders. “I get the feeling you’ll do alright,” I tell him.
He does.  The song is the right timing for a waltz and at first we try to keep to a rhythm but by the time the bridge starts we’ve reverted to swaying back and forth to the beat and not much more.  Baz is humming again but quieter now, like he’s more self-conscious about it now that I’m closer to his face, like me seeing him will make him sound different somehow.
“Do you know all the words?”
“More or less,” he says, but he blushes a little and I figure he knows them better than he’d like to admit.
           “Sing to me.”
He shakes his head with a smile.  “I don’t know the song that well.”
“Yes you do,” I grin at him, “you obviously do.”
“I can’t sing in front of people, Snow,” he looks down in more of a show of self-consciousness than I think I’ve ever seen on him, “not even you.”
I lean forward and rest my chin on his shoulder. “I’m not looking,” I murmur in his ear.
It takes him until the last chorus, but when he sings it’s like the song finds something that was missing without his voice. He’s still quiet and I get the feeling he’s holding back, but by the end he seems less worried and I can hear that his voice can be strong if he wants it to be.  It’s there in the way he draws back on the note changes, how his voice darkens on higher notes, in the touch of vibrato near the end.
When the song fades out, I wish I could make it play again so we could keep swaying to it, so I could hear him sing the whole thing through, but instead I retreat from his shoulder so I can press a kiss to his cheek.  “Of course you couldn’t just be beautiful,” I chuckle quietly, “you had to be able to sing, too.”
“Is that a problem?”  I can hear the smile in his voice.
“It is,” I kiss his mouth slowly.  “I’m in danger of falling even harder.”
The song has switched to something more upbeat and overplayed, but we’re both still trapped in the waltz, in each other’s arms, and I know I could never move from here and I’d be perfectly content.
“You should sing more often,” I tell him.
He kisses me.  “I’ll keep that in mind.”

Marvel peeps, I’m doing a compilation post of all LGBTQ+ mutants in the X-books, who they are and where to currently read about them.....let me know if I’m missing any? I THINK I have everyone here, but just checking....
Iceman Northstar Destiny Mystique Rictor Shatterstar Karma Galura Prodigy Akihiro Anole Somnus Bouncer Tempo Mercury Loa Solem Betsy Braddock Graymalkin Jessie Drake Escapade Darkveil Christian Frost Bling Negasonic Teenage Warhead Mulholland Black Pyro II (Simon Lasker) Carmen Cruz aka Gimmick Benjamin Deeds Hindsight Cam Long Aura Charles Brutha Nature Leonara Eng Monica Sellers Liana Pity Girl Good Arson Faceshopper Morgan Red Amphelion Sunpyre Fantomex Jumbo Carnation Shinobi Shaw Stacy X Skein Courier
I’m including Kyle Jinadu, Romeo, Tommy Shepherd and Billy Kaplan separately as possible mutants (in the case of Tommy and Billy) and/or significant others of mutant LGBTQ+ characters.
And then Wolverine, Colossus, Jubilee and Longshot are canonically LGBTQ+ in other non-616 universes.
And then lastly, there’s the heavily subtexted or ‘Word of God’ LGBTQ+ characters…Storm, Rachel Grey, Magik, Black Tom, Juggernaut, Sunspot, Chance, Kate Pryde, Callisto, Cyclops, Logan and Pyro (St. John Allerdyce).
I’m trying to figure out how to handle this group, because like, we know damn well what they keep implying with the subtext with Scott, Jean and Logan, but like, I don’t want to give that the same weight as the way the other listed characters all have explicitly referenced their identities or relationships on the page, y’know? Same thing with Storm and Yukio, who I will literally fight anyone who tries to pretend that they weren’t a couple BUT at the same time, like….I have gripes with the praise Claremont gets for his handling of certain characters’ probable bisexuality (for the clout), similar to how I have the same issue with Duggan and how he’s used Kate, etc. Like, its more about trying to figure out how to make a distinction that casts side-eye on certain writers for their framing of specific scenes, without invalidating those scenes or what they say or suggest about the characters if that makes sense?
Also, I didn’t read Rainbow Rowell’s Runaways…were Nico and Pixie ever a canon thing there, or just a fanon ship? Anyone know?

February 06 2022: Fangirl by Rainbow Rowell
If liked Fangirl, you might also enjoy The Other Side of Lost by Jessi Kirby about a young adult just after she finished high school going on a weeks long hiking trip in honor of / to remember her dead friend. Also it deals with social media and expectations.

#3 Cal Advances to NCAA Semifinals
Golden Bears Beat #9 Bulldogs 14-7
BERKELEY, Calif. – Playing in its first-ever NCAA Championship home game on Friday at Spieker Aquatics Complex, the No. 3 California women's water polo team breezed past No. 9 Fresno State for a 14-7 quarterfinal win.
The Golden Bears (17-6) advance to the semis to face No. 2 Hawaii on Saturday at 4 p.m. PT.
Cal's offense was firing on all cylinders for much of the game as it put away the most goals the Bulldogs (21-8) have conceded all season. The Bears punished FSU on counter attacks throughout, moving the ball end-to-end and side-to-side with ease. Cal finished 5-for-10 on power plays compared to 2-of-14 for Fresno State.
Five different Bears finished with two goals, with Rozanne Voorvelt and Elena Flynn both securing their second before halftime. Cal led 4-1 after one quarter, getting goals from four different players. Late in the second, back-to-back goals on 6-on-5 situations from Flynn put the home side up 8-3.
Senior Maryn Dempsey secured her brace on the Bears' first attack of the second half – a possession which lasted less than 10 seconds and required only two passes out of the defensive end. Cal later ended the game on a 3-1 run with fourth-quarter goals by redshirt sophomore Claire Rowell and freshmen Julianne Snyder and Julia Bonaguidi.
Senior goalkeeper Isabel Williams finished 17 saves, one shy of her season high. In three meetings against FSU this season, she averaged a staggering 16.3 saves per game.
Cal will be playing in its fifth NCAA Championship semifinal since 2017. The last time the Bears faced the Rainbow Wahine (23-3) exactly two months ago in Berkeley, they jumped out to an electric 5-0 first-quarter lead en route to a 9-8 victory. The two sides split their season series, with Hawaii defeating Cal 10-7 in the Barbara Kalbus Invitational semifinals. The winner of today's game will face either No. 1 UCLA or No. 4 Stanford in Sunday's championship game. The Bears beat the Cardinal twice last month but lost to the Bruins by one goal.
No. 3 California 14, No. 9 Fresno State 7 Cal 4 5 2 3 – 14 FSU 1 3 2 1 – 7 Cal Goals: Maryn Dempsey 2, Julia Bonaguidi 2, Elena Flynn 2, Rozanne Voorvelt 2, Abbi Magee 2, Mallory Reynoso, Claire Rowell, Julianne Snyder, Jessie Rose FSU Goals: Hailey Andress 3, Abbey Simshauser 2, Elisa Grim, Ashley Williams Cal Saves: Isabel Williams 17 FSU Saves: Paula Nieto Jasny 8
