Had to make an analysis comic for one of my finals last semester and I decided to do mine on the similarities between Arby and Jessica's trauma and how differently it affected them!

I tried my best to mimic the style of the manuscript from the show and although it's not exactly the same I love how this turned out! It was tons of fun to make a comic using paints, ink and pencil instead of digitally for once!

(Also I absolutely hate academic writing so if the words feel a little clunky just ignore it lol)

Utopia C4 Hollow Moon (Bad Wolf)

Back in 2013, far before the Amazons tried to do a US version, Channel 4 in the UK did a rather brutal show called Utopia. It was full of conspiracy, horror, and violence that revulsed many. There was a call for it to be taken off the air back then. Especially in the wake of a particularly upsetting murder by the seemingly emotionless killer throughout the course of the series.

And the conspiracy almost believably reached up into a pre-dystopian nightmare led by ridiculously powerful people. And only 5 or 6 perfectly ordinary and very, very kill-able people stood in the way of the death of billions. With a B, folks.

The soundtrack, by Kristobal Tapia de Veer was a haunting and ever-present undercurrent of menace and upsetting emotion. And the themes pretty much catch the feel of it. The opening and closing credits give me the image of a very ordinary nice day. Where if we didn't know better, we couldn't possibly imagine existential evil afoot. And just to make that worse, that evil is a matter of days from happening.

I feel like that when I'm walking down a sunlit street in Night City. Pedestrians about. On their way to whatever little roach errands they're about. A callous disregard for the suffering around them as less fortunate souls stagger along the sidewalk, if not lying on it, insensate and twitching. It's a lovely day in the city today. If you can stand the dead and the dying all around you.

These themes convey that blameless nice-ness with the feeling of an immense evil so entirely convinced of its rightness it's too big to deal with. And then the sense of hectic flight and the rush to do something about it before the worst can happen. These themes get it across. And the ending slaps. And if you haven't seen the Channel 4 version from the UK, do yourself a favor and give it a watch. But it isn't for the faint of heart. Caveat Emptor folks.
