"BLEAK HOUSE" (1959) Review
Tumblr media
"BLEAK HOUSE" (1959) Review
I never thought a trip to Great Britain would reveal the existence of many television adaptations of certain Victorian novels. But it did. I took a trip to Europe and discover that the BBC had produced older television adaptations of famous novels - including those written by Charles Dickens.
One of the adaptations I had stumbled across was the 1959 version of Dickens' 1852-1853 novel, "Bleak House". First aired in eleven 30-minute episodes, I had been forced to binge watch the entire miniseries at a friend's house due to a time constraint. Eric Tayler, known for his work with the BBC in Great Britain and the ABC in New Zealand, served as the producer. And Constance Cox, who had a reputation for adapting classic literature for the stage and television, had served as the screenwriter for the five-and-a-half hours production. How did they do?
Before I offer my opinion of the miniseries, allow me to provide a recap of this adaptation of Dickens' story. "BLEAK HOUSE" centered around Jarndyce and Jarndyce, a long-running legal case in the Court of Chancery, due a testator having written several conflicting wills. Among the characters directly affected by Jarndyce and Jarndyce are:
*John Jarndyce - a beneficiary of the case, and benevolent landowner and owner of the Bleak House estate *Richard Castrone - one of Mr. Jarndyce's wards and another beneficiary *Ada Clare - Mr. Jarndyce's other ward and another beneficiary *Esther Sommerson - Mr. Jarndyce's third ward, whom he hired to serve as his housekeeper and Ada's companion *Honoria, Lady Dedlock - the wife of baronet Sir Leicester Dedlock, another beneficiary and Esther's illegitimate mother
Although the Jarndyce and Jarndyce case directly affect some, other characters - like Esther - are indirectly affected by the case:
*Sir Leicester Dedlock- wealthy baronet and Lady Dedlock's husband *Mr. Tulkinghorn - Sir Leicester's solicitor, who becomes aware of Lady Dedlock's past, due to her reaction to the affidavit *Nemo aka James Hawdon - a former British Army officer, Esther's illegitimate father and law writer, whose penmanship of a Jarndyce and Jarndyce affidavit alerts his presence to his former lover, Lady Dedlock *Jo - a poor young street sweeper whom Nemo had befriended *Miss Flyte - an elderly woman, whose family had been destroyed by a long-running Chancery case similar to Jarndyce v Jarndyce, and who befriends Mr. Jarndyce's wards *Krook - a rag and bottle merchant and collector of papers, who is also Miss Flyte and Nemo's landlord
Although Mr. Jarndyce remained unconcerned with the case, Richard develops an obsession over it, an act that leads to his estrangement from his guardian. This estrangement leave both Esther and Ada caught between the pair. Lady Dedlock seemed more concern with the identity of the man who had been hired to write the Jarndyce and Jarndyce affidavit. Her concern is noticed by Mr. Tulkinghorn, who becomes obsessed with connecting the two in an effort to protect Sir Leicester's good name. His search for Nemo's identity and Lady Dedlock's secret end up affecting other characters.
I had expected to dislike this version of "BLEAK HOUSE" . . . or merely express contempt for it. To my surprise, I found myself impressed. Granted, I believe it had its share of flaws, which I will eventually discussed. But overall, "BLEAK HOUSE" proved to be more than a solid adaptation of Dickens' novel. Thanks to Constance Cox's screenplay and the group of directors, the eleven-part miniseries moved at a steady pace that kept me alert and interested in the story. And although Bryan Langley's camera work lacked the artistry and sweep of the two adaptations that followed, I thought he managed to provide some artistic touches in the productions, especially those moments featuring Esther, Richard and Ada's arrival at Bleak House, Esther and Inspector's Bucket's search for the missing Lady Dedlock later in the series, the miniseries' final shot and especially the murder of a major character around the end of the ninth episode. What I find interesting is that many of these "artistic" touches had occurred near the end of an episode.
I noticed that this version of Dickens' novel had removed several supporting characters from the adaptation. Those missing included Mr. Jarndyce's old friend, Lawrence Boythorn; the Jellyby and Turveydrop families; the former servant of Esther's aunt, Mrs. Chadband and her minister husband; Rosa, Lady Dedlock's second maid; Watt Rouncewell, Rosa's intended; and Robert Rouncewell, Watt's industrialist father and the older son of the Dedlocks' housekeeper. This led screenwriter Constance Cox to create another excuse for Lady Dedlock to dismiss her French maid, Madam Hortense. I cannot help but wonder if this was an attempt to portray Lady Dedlock's treatment of her personal servants in a more positive light. There were characters whose roles had been reduced by Cox and producer Eric Tayler. Among them were George Rouncewell's right-hand man, Phil Squod; the memorable, yet malignant moneylender, Joshua Smallweed; and his granddaughter Judy Smallweed. Because of this reduction of Smallweed's character, Lady Dedlock needed another reason to flee Chesney Wold, other than blackmail and the threat of exposure. The elimination of one particular character nearly left a hole in the production - namely Harold Skimpole, the selfish and amoral friend of Mr. Jarndyce, with his penchant for sponging from others.
The lack of Mr. Skimpole proved to be a problem for me. Without his presence, I found Richard Carstone's gradual interest in the Jarndyce and Jarndyce case, his growing hostility toward Mr. Jarndyce and his hiring of the greedy Chancery lawyer, Mr. Vholes, less easy to accept. Correct me if I am wrong, but it seemed to me Skimpole had played a major influence in Richard's growing obsession with the Jarndyce case. Without his presence in this production, there were times when Richard's arc seemed rushed. But I had a few more issues with "BLEAK HOUSE", but not as severe as the one surrounding the Skimpole character. The miniseries had failed to explain Miss Flyte's whereabouts, during her landlord Mr. Krook's moment of spontaneous combustion. Where was she? The old lady had already moved to other lodgings in the novel. And in the two adaptations following this one, she had encountered law clerk William Guppy outside of Krook's shop, while returning home. Granted, this adaptation proved to be more faithful regarding the circumstances of Krook's death with the addition of the Tony Jobling character. I just wish it had explained Miss Flyte's whereabouts.
I do have some complaints regarding the production's casting, but I will get to that later. Some have pointed out that this adaptation lacked the sweeping visuals of the 1985 and 2005 versions. I cannot deny this. But this "BLEAK HOUSE" was a television production from the late 1950s. It seemed unrealistic to expect the miniseries to possess the same visual sweeps from the two adaptations that followed. With the exception of the mid-19th century hairstyle worn by actress Elizabeth Shepherd, the other major female cast members had their hair (or wigs) swept into late 1950s beehives. If that was not enough, I also had some issues with the women's costumes. Dickens' novel had been published between 1852 and 1853. The costume designs for the 1985 and 2005 adaptations had reflected this time period. But I had noticed that the women's costume designs for the 1959 adaptation reflected a later period - between the late 1850s and early 1860s - when women's skirts were more wider, due to the innovation of the cage crinoline petticoat in 1856. Had it been the intention of producer Eric Tayler to set this adaptation during the later years of the 1850s?
With the exception of one or two actors, I did not have a problem with the performances featured in "BLEAK HOUSE". I certainly had no problems from the likes of Elizabeth Shepherd, John Phillips, Jerome Willis, Angela Crow, William Mervyn, Wilford Brambell, Richard Pearson, Michael Aldridge, Gerald Cross, Eileen Draycott, Leslie French and Annette Carrell. I especially have to commend Shepherd, Phillips, Aldridge and Carrell for being standouts among the supporting cast. The only reason I could not regard John Phillips' portrayal of the lawyer Mr. Tulkinghorn as among the best of the series is that although I found his performance rather intimidating at times, I thought he had lacked the high level of menace and spite that both Peter Vaughn and Charles Dance had managed to infuse into their portrayals.
There were performances that I found questionable. David Horne's portrayal of the aristocratic Sir Leicester Dedlock struck me as a bit too theatrical or hammy - especially during the miniseries' last two episodes. Terence Soall's performance as the moneylender Mr. Smallweed seemed not only a ghost of Dickens' original character. The malice and sharp temper seemed to be missing in Soall's interpretation of the character, leaving the actor's Mr. Smallweed to be nothing more than a man who resorted to passive-aggressive sniveling to get through life. And to my surprise, I believe he was only featured in one or two episodes. I finally come to Malcolm Knight, who portrayed the impoverished street-crossing sweeper, Jo. I am not claiming that he gave a bad performance. If I must be honest, the actor had given his all to inject as much pathos as possible into the role. But . . . if I must be honest, at the age of 23 or 24 years old, Knight had been too old to portrayed the 10-to-12 years-old Jo. No amount of pathos in his performance could overcome this issue.
For me, the outstanding performances came from six cast members. Although Cox's transcript did not touch upon Esther's bouts insecurity - a product of the emotional abuse she had endured, while being raised by her aunt - I thought Diana Fairfax did an excellent job of conveying Esther's sometime frantic need to be liked. Andrew Cruickshank was equally superb as the warm-hearted landowner, Mr. John Jarndyce, who seemed torn between his efforts to protect his charges and his anguish over Richard's unfounded hostility toward him. I also noticed that both Fairfax and Cruickshank had generated a very strong screen chemistry - which would be repeated by those who had portrayed Esther and Mr. Jarndyce in future adaptations. All of the actors I have seen portray the young Richard Carstones had been first-rate. But I believe Colin Jearvons gave the best portrayal of the fleckless but good-natured ward, transformed over time by the character's growing obsession with the Jarndyce case and his own resentment toward Mr. Jarndyce's disappointment in his failure to find a profession. Ironically, Jeavons had appeared in six Dickens adaptations, including two adaptations of "Great Expectations" and two of "Bleak House". Iris Russell did a first-rate job in infusing a good deal of pathos into the Honoria, Lady Dedlock role without resorting to any hammy acting. This especially seemed to be the case in the one scene in which Lady Dedlock revealed herself as Esther's mother to the latter. I believe Miss Flyte must be one of those roles that prove very difficult not to indulge in theatrical acting. Fortunately for this production, Nora Nicholson had been cast in the role of Miss Flyte, the elderly and eccentric woman who had developed an obsessive in other Chancery cases like Jarndyce and Jarndyce, following the destruction of her own family over a similar case. Nicholson managed to keep her performance under control, while conveying Miss Flyte's eccentric nature. Finally, Timothy Bateson really impressed me in his portrayal of the ambitious, yet very funny law clerk, William Guppy, who worked for Mr. Jarndyce's solicitor. I have to say . . . that man had possessed a superb comic timing that not only suited the character very well., but should have been the envy of many comic actors.
I am not going to pretend that "BLEAK HOUSE" should have been faithful to Dickens' novel. That would have been an impossibility for any television or movie production. Some of the changes made by the screenwriter failed to harm the miniseries. But there were a few changes - namely the exclusion of the Harold Skimpole character - that struck me as minor mistakes. However, I thought Constance Cox did a first-rate job in adapting Dickens' novel. And those who had directed the eleven episodes did an excellent job in maintaining the production's pace and also the narrative's continuity. I believe their work had been ably supported by a first-rate cast led by Diana Fairfax, Andrew Cruickshank, Colin Jeavons and Elizabeth Shepherd. I would gladly watch this miniseries again. Unfortunately, it is currently unavailable in the U.S. and I do not see myself in paying for another trip to the U.K. just to watch it. Hmmmm . . . pity.

pairing: Colin Ritman x OC! Reader
Summary: On the day she presents her demo at Tuckersoft, Nessa faces nervousness and strange memories. What should have been just a game presentation turns into the beginning of something much bigger—and stranger.
word count: 3.4k
a/c: I apologize for the delay in posting the first chapter. I recently started writing again and had a million ideas in my head. Anyway, I hope you enjoy the first chapter. ENGLISH IS NOT MY FIRST LANGUAGE 🤓☝️
Tumblr media
A shrill noise pulls me out of a hazy, almost forgotten dream. I shiver from the sudden cold and the ray of sunlight coming through the crack in the curtain. As I turn, I see the red alarm flashing: 8:30 a.m.
I stretch and quickly get out of bed, hurriedly tidying up the blanket. Today is the day. The day I'm going to present my demo to Tuckersoft. A dream — and a challenge.
Today, July 14, 1984. After days of insistent phone calls, talking to secretaries who promised to call back — and never did — I finally got them to listen to me. I'm not sure what made Mohan Thakur change his mind, but he invited me to show him my project. And now, I can't falter.
I'm not going to miss this opportunity to show the work that could mean something big in my life.
In the bathroom, I look at my reflection as I finish washing my face with a mixture of anxiety and focus. As I brush my teeth, flashes of the dream come back. A little boy. Round cheeks, dark hair, lying in a bed too big for him. He looked at me from the bed while I watched him from the door. But... his face is blurred. Impossible to remember clearly.
I finish brushing my teeth, trying to shake off the strange feeling, then open the cabinet behind the mirror and take my vitamins, as usual. At that moment, I hear two knocks on the bedroom door—my father, reminding me that it's been 10 minutes since the alarm went off. It's time to get dressed.
I grab my purse, already packed, and look in the mirror one last time to make sure I'm dressed right for today. I choose dark suede pants and a black turtleneck. Not that it bothers me to be feminine, but in this environment — clearly dominated by men — anything that could make me seem "less reliable" tends to be used against me. It seems unfair, but that's the real world of business today.
I go downstairs for breakfast. At the bottom of the stairs, I come across my father locking the back door, where he keeps his gardening tools. I smile when I see him. I sit down at the table and open the book that inspired my game: Bandersnatch, by Jerome F. Davies.
I must prepare myself for any unforeseen circumstances today in that room where I will demonstrate my demo. Whatever the circumstances, I must show that I know what I'm doing, that I can add value to that company, and that, above all, my project can revolutionize a new form of gaming compared to our era.
I don't notice that my father is watching me until he places my cup of tea in front of me.
"Your tea."
"Thank you, Dad." I reply, sipping the slightly bitter liquid and trying to concentrate. "Today is the day I'm going to present a game to be one of Colin Ritman's games."
"And it's going to be about Bandersnatch? The book you haven't put down since, I don't know, you were 18?" My father exclaims, looking at me confused as he drinks his coffee.
"Yes, it's Jerome F. Davis' book," I confirm, turning my eyes back to the book. "I can't stop reading it because you go back and forth... You decide what the character in the book does."
"You decide the character's path, right?" I see my father get up from his seat, walk over to the counter, grab two boxes of cereal in each hand, and turn to me. "Then you might as well choose your breakfast at least."
"Sugar Puffs," I reply without hesitation, almost automatically.
A slight twinge shoots through my temple.
Tumblr media
On the last bus of the route, I find a seat, put on my headphones, and look at the cassette tape options. Lately, I've been listening to Thompson Twins and Eurythmics a lot, and even though I really want to listen to both tracks, I don't have much time, but...
Thompson Twins seems like the right choice today. I put the tape in my Walkman, and Hold Me Now starts playing.
The streets pass by the window like a blur — something inside me can't shake the feeling that I've done this all before. As if I were stuck in a loop. It's the same feeling as continuous déjà vu, it must be some side effect of one of my vitamins, and I try to ignore it.
As I face the imposing Tuckersoft building, I feel the name reflected in the glass like a warning: you have to prove your worth. I close my eyes, summoning my courage before entering, and feel a slight recognition of this. I adjust my coat and enter, identifying myself to the receptionist.
I soon arrive at what appears to be an environment in utter chaos: boxes being carried, employees talking at the same time, mixed sounds of keys, machines, and conversations. I try to get out of the way as discreetly as possible.
In the middle of the hallway, I spot Mohan Thakur—imposing, smiling, gesturing intensely. He hands money to a boy and soon notices me. I straighten up, try to smile, even though my hands are cold.
"Ah, you're Lissa Yorkie?" he exclaims as he opens his arms in a warm and very loud welcome, even though he ignored the fact that he got my name wrong.
"Actually, it's Nessa Yorkie. Nice to meet you." I extend my hand, smiling slightly.
He apologizes and laughs. He looks around. "Sorry about the mess, we moved in on Monday, so..." I agree with a nervous smile.
"It's big," I comment.
"Yeah, expansion. That's my plan, a whole team just for graphics, another for sound, gameplay... We're going to be a success!" he says excitedly.
I imagine the future he describes. A complete studio, like the ones that only exist in the United States. Specialized teams, games with more than one brain behind them. "Like an office... but for computer games," I think out loud.
Thakur smiles. "Exactly. And you came here first, huh?"
My chest warms slightly. Maybe I can belong here and see it happen. My eyes stop on the posters, and one in particular catches my attention: MELT HEDD. I vaguely recognize it from some game showcases.
"That's Colin's new one," says Thakur, pointing to the back of the room. My heart races as I follow what he wanted to show me on one of the tables in front of the hall. Colin Ritman. Colin Ritman, the super-rich, genius, eccentric game designer of this company, who spent much of his time watching his few interviews and wanting to be up to date on all his releases. I see his blond hair, the lit cigarette, the headphones in his ears. I feel the sweat on my hands again.
"Colin Ritman? I've played all his games..."
Thakur notices my nervousness, of course. And then — as if in a nightmare — he says, "Well let’s go say hello, then."
I follow silently, forcing my feet off the carpet where I was trying not to trip, not to sweat anymore, and most importantly, not to embarrass myself in front of several people on this floor. As we approach, Colin is focused while smoking, and then Thakur removes one of his earphones and exclaims something in his ear, causing Colin to shudder, slowly coming out of his bubble, taking a drag on his cigarette, leaning back in his chair and looking at Tharkur.
"Can you believe him? He’s made enough this year to buy a Lamborghini and he still smokes roll-ups." Thakur jokes.
"Well, the pre-rolled ones have strychnine in them. So they're the suckers," Colin replies dryly, and then his eyes fall on me.
Thakur introduces me — and again gets my name wrong.
"An... Yorkie. Nessa Yorkie." I extend my hand, smiling.
No one ever told me what it feels like to meet someone you're a fan of. I have no idea if what I'm feeling now is anything like what someone else has felt. When I look at Colin, I feel my body grow cold, my face flush, my heart skip a beat with anxiety, and I feel a twinge in my head again.
Colin doesn't shake my hand. Instead, he frowns. He studies me. He analyzes me. Increasing the tension inside me. "We’ve met before?" he asks, pointing his cigarette in my direction.
"Um... no? Well, not that I know of," I reply, trying to sound casual. He shrugs and turns his attention back to the screen. He starts a new game.
"This is my latest..." I watch him start the game and slide his chair back a little so I can get closer and see better. The character seems to be falling from a building. The goal is to rescue small colored balls in the air as points while dodging clotheslines.
"Nohzdyve?" I ask without thinking as I watch him dodge the obstacles. Ironically, Colin must have made the player's design look like him, since the little man who was falling had platinum hair.
"Mh-mh... that's right?" Colin murmurs, agreeing with a suspicious tone. I blink slightly, taking my attention off the screen and glancing to the side, seeing him with raised eyebrows and a look I can't describe. I just remember that he mentioned the name of the game before.
I shake my head slightly, trying to put it behind me, and follow his movements in the game. As soon as Colin tries to retrieve an object that appears to be a clock on the screen, something goes wrong. The image freezes and returns to the command prompt.
"What was that?" asks Thakur, confused, as Colin straightens his posture, trying to correct the screen error.
"Buffer error." I reply without hesitation. "The eyeball sprites overran the video memory."
They both look at me in surprise. Colin especially. He stares at me as if I had said something I wasn't supposed to know, again with that same look from 5 seconds ago.
"How do you know that?" he asks me, looking at me deeply.
"I... just did," I say, trying to hide my blush. Then I look at Tharkur and see him smiling as if satisfied with my answer and pats Colin on the shoulder.
"She's good, isn't she? Anyway, let's get down to business. Nessa has a demo to show us." He signals for Ritman to get up, and he sighs and takes a drag on his cigarette while I follow Mohan to his meeting room just ahead. I can hear Colin's footsteps right behind me.
I feel that annoying throbbing in my temple again, causing me to lower my head slightly as if a large hammer were hitting my skull. I have to remember to check if I've restocked my painkillers and if the vitamin drugs are doing the trick, otherwise I feel like I might go crazy with this pain.
"Are you okay, Yorkie?" Colin murmurs behind me as he takes a drag on his cigarette and blows the smoke in the opposite direction from me, then looks at me. I see his gaze go from my eyes to my head, and being closer to him, I realize how intimidatingly tall he is, requiring me to look up to find his eyes behind his large glasses.
I nod, trying to smile. "Yes. I'm just nervous about the presentation," I say in a more confident tone, wanting to show that I was really fine and that I probably wasn't paying that much attention to his face.
"Don't worry. No offense, but Mo is already impressed that a woman is playing the game. Just don't stutter," " he says ironically as he looks at Tharkur's back, hoping he won't hear him. I frown when I hear this, but it's no big surprise to me that in this industry, he would obviously want to see for himself what a woman can deliver as a game.
It's as if he could see my insecurity even before I said anything. Perhaps he sees more than meets the eye.
Tumblr media
The joystick is steady in my sweaty hands, but I feel calmer seeing that the demo runs smoothly and is working perfectly, just as I had tested it several times on my computer. I try to avoid thinking too much about the thousands of possible errors that could happen at this moment, but I fail to calm down, feeling Tharkur's heavy breathing in front of me as he watches my game and Colin's presence sitting at the table. As I advance the game, I finally meet PAC, and then the player's choice options appear.
Worship or Den...
"Don’t worship him. He's the thief of destiny." Colin looks at the screen and then at me as I shudder at the sound of his voice, suddenly choosing one of the paths. He stares at me as if it were an obvious answer.
God, how grateful I was that he chose this path, since it was the one I had managed to program some advances for. At least I wouldn't have to suffer the embarrassment of showing that I hadn't prepared the other side.
But I can't stop thinking or looking at him in surprise that he knows who the villain of the book is, so I'm probably not the only one in this room who fell head over heels for the work.
"Did you read Bandersnatch?" I ask, still surprised.
"Jerome F. Davies. Visionary." My chest tightens. Until a few moments ago, I was feeling mixed emotions, controlling my posture as much as I could to show confidence, ignoring or trying to ignore the fact that my head had been throbbing stupidly since I entered this place, and the great fact that I had been ecstatic about Colin's presence all this time. But now, I felt this great warm sensation in my chest, as if I could finally ease all this accumulated stress and then the anxiety subsided a little.
"Isn’t he that bloke who cut his wife’s head off?" says Mohan, bewildered, while Colin agrees, still staring at PAC on the screen.
"That is what people tend to focus on, yes." Colin replies, without losing focus.
"Which ending did you read?" I caught his attention again, seeing that his gaze was less harsh than before, as if he had noticed my nervousness all along.
"All of them." He shrugged, and my reaction was to frown as I watched him turn his attention to a rubber ball and throw it up in the air.
Why choose all paths? Why read them all? As much as it is a tireless work to read, no one reads them all. Even before I had the idea to make the game, I always read the book wanting to subject the character to the best possible ending, to finally find the final path of the great maze that Davies created...
Before I can process any further, Mohan takes the controller from my hand. "Excuse me."
He chooses the wrong option. "Worship PAC", and then, as expected, the error screen pops up, causing him to exit the game.
"What happened?" he asks, looking at me.
"I haven’t programmed that pathway yet."
"So there are many paths?"
"Yes. If it's supposed to be the same as the book..." I murmur as I take the joystick when he hands it to me.
"There are many divergent realities in the book. It was ahead of its time," Colin comments, as if he understands everything I tried to put into the project. "If there is such a thing as time," I hear him murmur, seeming to be talking about more than just the book...
Mohan's palm against the table startles me. A new twinge appears along with the buzzing.
"Come work here."
My heart leaps. I feel it as if it wants to jump out of my mouth.
"Really?"
"Mhm. We'll give you some desks and put together a small team just for you. And of course Colin will be here." Thakur points to Colin, who waves at me but doesn't look at me. I feel my cheeks ache and realize I've been smiling all this time listening to Mohan's proposals. "I'll hire a guy to take care of the audio next week and we can take care of the music right here."
That twinge in my head instantly turned into a slight ringing in my ear, muffling Tharkur's voice slightly. I listen, enchanted. But something inside me... hesitates.
"No."
The word comes out. Without permission.
Thankur looks at me in surprise and looks at Colin, seeming to want to make sure he wasn't the only one who heard my answer. I follow his gaze and see him looking at me with his eyebrows raised, just as he has done since we first met. Once again, I capture that surprised and sombre look on him.
My hands start to sweat, and I feel cold sweat break out as I fear ruining everything. My eyes are wide with astonishment.
And with a snap, it comes to me, I remember what I wanted to say and immediately exclaim.
"Sorry, I-I want to do the game, of course... I just, I believe I need to..." I take a deep breath and force myself to stop stuttering. "...I prefer to create it the way I know how. Do you understand?" I look expectantly at Mohan, who continues to stare at me as if I were an alien standing in front of him. I feel like he still doesn't understand my proposal or isn't used to being contradicted.
"Alone?"
"Yeah, it's all in my head, and I think if I work with other people, it'll be a little more stressful? Especially with people who may not have even read or know anything about the book."
"Stressful?" Mohan looks uncomfortable. He's not used to refusals.
"But I know that this way I can make the game just like the book," I conclude, wanting to reassure them and show them one last time that I deserve a chance, and I see the man in front of me nod slowly.
"But it's still a game, right?" He asks me, wanting me to reassure him, but before I can speak, I hear Colin speak up.
"I get it" Colin says, without me having to answer. "She's a craftswoman. A lone woodsman, I’m the same." Colin's gaze toward me seems warmer, something I didn't expect at this moment.
He stands up and crosses the room. He stares at me more closely with his eyes behind his glasses.
Colin points the rubber ball at me. "It’s like a saying. Teams are fine for things like action titles but when it’s concept based..." he points the rubber ball at his own chest as we look at each other "... bit of madness is what you need."
"And that works best when it's one mind," he says, pointing at me again.
Mohan rolls his eyes. "Right, Timothee Leary. We'll discuss 'The Doors of Perception' later..." Tharkur mocks Colin's speech, which he immediately refutes.
"That was Huxley, not Leary," Colin retorts.
"You'll have your room. The important thing is to move forward by Christmas, so we need you to finish by September 12. No delays."
"Okay," I smile, relieved.
I extend my hand. With a slight buzzing continuing in my ear, something forces me to look at Colin, who is almost next to me, paying attention to the carpet in the room. I don't want to listen to the voice in the back of my mind telling me that he seems to be avoiding my gaze. I turn back to Tharkur and smile, taking his hand to seal the deal.
The twinge returns. My attention suddenly turns to the living room door, and at that moment, the boy from earlier enters timidly, looking at each of us, carrying chocolate bars. Tharkur, upon seeing him, or rather, upon seeing the bars, claps his hands in celebration.
"That's my man!" he says, laughing. He takes one of the bars, ready to eat it, and then waves it at Colin without even looking at him, too busy with the chocolate in front of him.
"Colin, introduce her to the provisional table."
I feel a little nudge on my shoulder and see Colin starting to walk out of the room. I say goodbye to Tharkur, then grab my bag and follow Colin, who walks back to his desk. "What do you usually listen to?"
"Mhm?" I ask, confused by his question.
"To get into the flow." He clarifies, turning to me as he sits in his chair, crossing his fingers and resting his legs on the table. I stand awkwardly in front of him, waiting for his response.
"Ah, music. Well... Thompson Twins." I say, grimacing slightly, waiting for his assessment, perhaps...?
I see the shadow of a smile on his lips. He stands up, now closer to me, making me hold my breath for a few seconds and look up to see his face. How tall is this guy, 6 feet?
"Grab a pen, come with me. Looks like your brain has gotten used to some junk." He says and then heads toward the elevator. I stare at his back, not understanding where he's taking me or what he's saying. I quickly grab the first pen I see on his desk and hurry to keep up with him, making sure my bag doesn't fall off my shoulders.
"Wait, where are we going?"
"A coffee shop nearby. It's almost lunchtime." He clarifies once again as if it were obvious, and then the elevator doors open. We get in and stand side by side facing the door, and then I feel it again.
A buzzing.
A twinge.
"There are several tea options you might like," Colin comments.
I frown... How does he know I like tea...?

How about Cranky, Harvey, Judie & Gerome, and Rocky met each other? If you could somehow figure out how to add Colin or Reg in there too, more props to you Te! Have a nice day even if you don't do this one
Ahhhh, the crane gang! They're all so much fun. I especially love Cranky; cantankerous characters are always such a joy, especially compared to how bouncy the engines on Sodor tend to be. Thank you for the prompt, and I hope you like this one!
(Prompts are closed, and as stated, I will be finishing the rest on my own time, although I'm hoping to finish them all in June. I had to take a good break after March—life became incredibly busy and I needed some time and space to make sure I didn't burn out—but the rest of the prompts WILL be done! Thank you for your support and your patience <3)
(If you're interested in seeing what I've written so far, you can take a look here!)
One harmonious night on the island of Sodor found the moon quietly making her rounds in the skies overhead, with many of the engines having been put up in their berths for the night. All was silent—or at least, it would have been, if not for the sounds of absolute madness currently assaulting Cranky's poor ears. "Alright, alright!" the crane growled, "settle down! Tonight, we are conducting a test of the inter-crane wireless communication channel, so—"
"Oh, this is so EXCITING!" came a loud, static-filled voice from the radio, and Cranky had to bite back a curse before he said something... regretful. "I can't believe I get to be part of the group! Oh, this is so thrilling. I—"
"Kevin," the larger crane forced out through gritted teeth, effectively silencing the smaller vehicle. "Do you remember what we talked about? Our operators aren't here right now, so they can't manage the radios for us. We're all live right now, so DON'T. INTERRUPT."
"...Yes, Cranky."
"Right," the large gray crane sighed. Already, he was starting to think that this had been a terrible idea, but the managers had insisted that they test the system after hours, in the event that there was an emergency and appropriate personnel needed to be notified. Of course, HE had also been put in charge for some godforsaken reason. Some shit about being "the most patient and responsible crane among them."
Well, whatever. He had a job to do, and the sooner he did it, the sooner he could get to sleep. "Alright, we're doing roll call. Carly?"
"HERE!" burst a loud, excitable voice, and in response, a loud chorus of assorted "ahhhhh!"s and "owwwww!"s, as well as some "ughhhhhhhh!"s and a good old "goddamn mothercrankin—" for good measure all made their way onto the airwaves as the feedback from both Carly shouting and her shout being picked up by Cranky's mic as well.
"Ok, OK!" Cranky grimaced. "Carly, no shouting! Ever!"
"...Got it."
"Thank you. Big Mickey?"
"..."
"...Big Mickey?"
"...Hello."
It took every ounce of Cranky's willpower to not blurt out something nasty, but the tantalizing idea of actually getting some good sleep when all this was over forced him to hold his tongue. "Ok. Good. Harvey?"
"Oh, yes! I'm ready!" a cheerful voice resounded. "I'm always ready to go; in fact, I could go all by myself! Hahahahahahahaha!"
"THANK YOU, Harvey," Cranky drawled before the engine's booming laughter gave him an even bigger headache to compliment the one already forming deep in his plating. "We all know how talented you are, what with being able to move by yourself. Quite amazing. Rocky?"
"Yes! Just let me know what's going on, and I'll notify the appropriate people."
Short, sweet, and to the point. These were all things that Cranky liked about Rocky, and truth be told, it was something of a shame (well, relatively, given his line of work) that he didn't tend to find his way to the docks that often. "Excellent. Thank you, Rocky. Judy? Jerome?"
"Yes, Cranky!" "We're here!" "Quite awake!" "And raring to go!" "Nothing to report so far, of course!" "Nothing except the lovely evening. Can you see the moon from where you are?" "Oh, of course he can, Jerome! Don't be silly!" "I'M silly?! Look here, Judy—"
"Yes, good, thank you," Cranky interjected, feeling The Look that Carly was shooting his way crawling up his tower, but Cranky had already used up his daily allotment of fucks trying to handle a kerfuffle over a shipment of Thomas the Tank Engine poseable plush toys this morning, and so he had come to the conclusion that he simply could not be bothered with politeness. It wasn't his fault that there was ALWAYS some reason or another why he couldn't be bothered with politeness. "Next is Kevin—no, you don't need to speak. I already know you're here."
Choosing to ignore the slightly dejected "Awww..." that came through the speaker, Cranky continued with his list. "Colin? Are you there?"
"Yep! Glad to be here, and I'm glad I get to talk to you all! It's so quiet over here, so I'm happy that we'll have a place to chat!"
Cranky felt his jaw clench and his eyes screw shut as he hissed out, "May I remind you, Colin, that this is a channel for emergencies? It is NOT for socializing!"
"But... isn't that what we're doing now?"
"NO! We are testing the system!"
"But can't we have a good chat while we're testing it? Or is that not allowed?"
If he had hands, Cranky would most assuredly have ripped himself from his perch and thrown himself in the ocean, destroying his radio forever so that he would no longer have to be part of this conversation. As it was, he could only suffer through it, the promise of a good night's sleep swiftly slipping through his, as established, non-existent fingers. "No. No irrelevant conversation while we are testing the system. Besides, we're almost done, and then we can all get some sleep, as we should. Reg? Are you here?"
"Nope."
"...Do I dare ask what you mean?"
"I'm not at Brendam Docks."
Oh. Oh, great. Of course, Reg had chosen NOW to joke around. But no, he'd responded. That was all Cranky needed, and now he could be done. "Fine, fine. Are you there?"
"Yep!"
"Good. Excellent. Alright, we're done here. The testing has concluded. Thank you for participating, and good night."
Cranky was about to shut off the radio, when he heard a quiet "Thank you, Cranky."
"...What are you thanking me for, Kevin?"
"For running the meeting. This sort of thing is good to have, and you're the only one who could get everybody to listen."
"...You know, he's right. That did go by fairly quickly..."
"Huh! Well, that's true. And I guess without a guy like Cranky running things, they might not let us have this."
"It's true! Some of you are so easily distracted!" "Oh, speak for yourself, Judy!" "Oh, SHUT IT, Jerome—"
Cranky tuned out all of the chatter, immersing himself in his own thoughts instead. He'd just been doing his job, all to try and get to sleep. He hadn't done anything special, especially since he had been against this idea the whole time. Kevin's kindness was wasted on him. Still... it was hard to deny the little spark of satisfaction that flared within him at the gratitude. Maybe he didn't deserve it, but it was always nice to be thanked.
"...You're welcome," he finally replied, interrupting whatever conversation the others had been having. "I didn't ask for this or anything, but... I'll do my best. Anyway, I'm going to sleep, but..." He paused a moment, then sighed. Sometimes he surprised even himself by how soft he was. "It's not like I can turn off any radios except for mine. So it's not like I would know if any of you ignore my good advice to go to sleep and keep talking, since our testing is over. Now... good night."
With that, Cranky directed his radio to turn off, and settled in for the night, allowing himself to be lulled to sleep by the ambient, joyful noise filling the air from his fellows' radios.

haii, what do you say about colin's love languages
Hey!! Oh, okay. I actually think about this quite often and I'm going to take the opportunity to share my thoughts regarding each language (big rant incoming lol, sorry!!)
Physical Touch - I don't see him as someone very physically affectionate. He's not the one who usually initiates the contact when it happens, at least. When the other person wants to do something like laying their head on his shoulder or similar he doesn't mind much or maybe quietly appreciates a bit depending on their intimacy level (with Kitty for example considering they have an established long-term relationship) but it barely goes further than this asides from sex, and also he has his limits and doesn't engage in lovey-dovey cuddling or being too cheesy and clingy. He's definitely not the PDA type though, a hand behind the shoulder or over the leg/thigh at best.
Quality Time - His most definitive love language in my opinion. I see him as someone who takes interest in people he can form sort of intellectual connection with, so if he likes someone and considers them worthy of his time he will enjoy spending time talking to them and engaging in deep and meaningful conversations, and actually appreciates being in their presence even if they're not necessarily talking or doing something else just being high and listening to Tangerine Dream.
Acts of Service - Well, this one is a bit tricky to me. I think it mostly depends of the situation and the task in hand. And also his mood. For example, I think he helps Kitty sometimes with the chores at home when he has time and it's not as high as a rocket and some other minor stuff she asks him to do. But if it comes to something like, Stefan asking him to help him code, he'd answer probably "You have to learn it by yourself, mate" or something like it. It wouldn't totally be just because he's a bitter asshole but also I think he's someone who rathers let people "struggle" so they can get to know stuff on their own, yk. And also because he's a bitter asshole. But if he doesn't want to do something he hardly will do it.
Words of Affirmation - Eh... "I'm a big fan of your work" X "you lack confidence and you look like you're ashamed to exist". He's just brutally raw and honest. If he appreciates something he will say it, but if he thinks it's shit he will say it too. I can picture him trying not to go too hard on Stefan for example and trying to help boost his self confidence a bit but he will always say what's really on his mind and never something he doesn't actually mean it. But he won't restrain himself from saying nice stuff if it's what he's really thinking. It's a bit of a yes-no to me.
Gifts - He's rich so spending money isn't really an issue for him. But I think he's more of a "I brought you this because it may be useful to you somehow" type rather than "I brought you this because it reminded me of you/I care for you". Like when he recorded Jerome's documentary and gave it to Stefan or gave him LSD so he would understand people think there's one reality but there's loads of them all sna-. It's not a big sign of affection and not something he does oftenly but like, it's a bit cute because it will be something regarding what he judges the other person needs. and may lead to psychosis but what's a small detail.

bandersnatch rewatch
taking place in 1984 uk could be an allusion to the book 1984, which is about government surveillance and has themes of rape, encountering one’s deepest fear, and thought crimes, and also takes place in the uk
the 1980s setting also implies negative cultural attitudes around homosexuality
stefan likely takes clomipramine, an ocd medication that used to come in orange and red capsules, but when i looked up side effects i couldn’t find anything that matched
camera angles in early scenes suggest stefan has already thought about killing his father pre canon (especially the way he eyes the ashtray, which he always uses to kill peter and the player doesn’t prompt him to use it)
what is the significance of the bandersnatch book originally belonging to stefan’s mother? perhaps it’s just to hint as early as possible towards her being dead, especially since she apparently never read it
i wonder if the glyph graffiti is there to imply others have had similar experiences or just to foreshadow? the davies case appears to be popular considering even thakur knows his story and a documentary and true crime book were made about it
colin condemns pre-rolled for having strychnine and then. takes lsd? which also sometimes has strychnine? dunno the significance of that but it’s definitely intentional
the colin games being named after metalhead and nosedive don’t appear to be alluding to the episodes for any particular reason other than being easter eggs, but black mirror does easter eggs relating to other episodes just for the sake of it a lot
this has been said but the first ending really is the closest to a happy ending. stefan is very young and brand new to game development and bandersnatch is his very first game; he would have had the opportunity to learn and grow from his failure if he was willing to take the bad review on the chin but since that ending is so unsatisfying the story refuses to allow that
the doors of perception, which thakur references and misattributes to timothy leary, is an autobiographical account of a drug trip and the insights experienced during the trip, foreshadowing the later lsd scene
timothy leary was a psychologist and author who advocated for psychedelics, more lsd scene foreshadowing
i’m defrostin mince :-)
“i think dad thought it was sissy” more gay coding
the rare stefan pov shots are often very shaky
looked up the other true crime books by the lives of jerome f davies, all appear to be made up
stefan’s house is shaped like the glyph
making plans for nigel is so on the nose
picking between the compulsions is why i’m so confident the player is a manifestation of his ocd
pax on the lsd is interesting, no idea what it’s meant to mean though?
colin has a poster for philip k dick’s ubik, a book with themes of cooperate espionage
if you have stefan jump a bus with A NEW CLEAN START drives past
peter appears to have a degree for neuropsychology? but i can’t read the second degree at all
parallels between stefan and his father/davies and his wife
not much to say on program and control route other than it seems to have the most foreshadowing out of all the endings
sex is almost always inherently violent on black mirror, which is why it makes sense that when haynes flirtatiously suggests they add “a little more action,” stefan attacks her (also cause he’s gay)
after chopping up the body stefan doesn’t leave it in his house forever, he hides it in a bag in the nearby woods, also stefan was arrested at 21 meaning two years after the events of the episode
the credits rolling in the pearl ending seems to imply it is the “true” ending (or most true)

The final film of the devisive Star Wars prequel trilogy was released on May 19, 2005. Of the first 6 Star Wars movies, Revenge of the Sith was the first Star Wars movie to be rated PG-13. It was also the first Star Wars film to not recieve a nomination of Best Visual Effects. The original cut of the movie tied directly to the end of the Genndy Tartakovsky animated Clone Wars (2003 - 2005) shorts and showed Shaak Ti (Orli Shoshan) being executed after failing to protect Palpatine (Ian McDiarmid). The animated shorts also introduced General Grievous (Matthew Wood) and explained why he had respratory problems. The title was simular to the original title of episode 6 Revenge of the Jedi (1983), which was turned to Return of the Jedi as Lucas felt revenge was not a Jedi trait. The title was changed late enough that it altered the title of Vengeance of Khan (1982) to Wrath of Khan as Star Trek producers felt Vengeance sounded too close to Revenge. Lucas finally worked in a Wookie planet battle that was originally in the script for episode 3 Star Wars A New Hope (1977) and reworked as Ewoks in Return of the Jedi. Originally, George Lucas planned to write and direct the first movie and then story and executive produce episodes 2 and 3, like he did with 5 and 6, but after the panning the first prequel got, he wrote and directed 2 and 3 himself. The movie had the key points of ending The Clone Wars, turning Anakin Skywalker (Hayden Christensen and James Earl Jones) into Darth Vader, the fall of the Jedi and the Republic, the creation of the Empire, the revelation of the Emperor and his disfiguration, the duel between Vader and Obi Wan (Ewan McGregor) that disfigured him, the death of Padme (Natalie Portman), the birth of Luke Skywalker (Aidan Barton) and Princess Leia Organa (also Aidan Barton), Luke's adoption by Owen (Joel Edgerton) and Beru Lars (Bonnie Piesse), Leia's adoption by Bail (Jimmy Smits) and Breha (Rebecca Jackson Mendoza) Organa, Yoda's (Frank Oz) exile to Degobah and Obi Wan to Tatooine, and C-3PO (Anthony Daniels) getting his memory wiped. The movie introduced the planets Utapau, Mygeeto, Felucia, Saleucami, Kashyyk (though technically this first appeared in the Star Wars Holiday Special - 1978), and Mustafar. Action also took place on established planets Coruscant, Naboo, and Tatooine. Noteable deaths in the movie were Count Dooku (Christopher Lee), General Grievous, Padme, Agen Kolar (Tux Akindoyeni), Saesee Tiin(Kenji Oates), Kit Fitso (Ben Cooke), Mace Windu (Samuel L Jackson), Boga, Ki-Adi-Mundi (Silas Carson), Aayla Secura (Amy Allen), Plo Koon (Matt Sloan), Stass Allie (Nina Fallon), Zett Jukassa (Jett Lucas), Whie Malreaux (Coinneach Alexander), Bene (Olivia McCallum), Cin Dralling (Nick Gillard), Nank Tun, Passel Argente (Marty Wetherill), Po Nudo (Paul Nicholson), Poggle the Lesser (Richard Stride), Rune Haako (Jerome Blake), Rute Gunnay (Colin Ware), Nute Gunray (Silas Carson), Tikkes , Cat Miin, Shu Mai, San Hill, and Wat Tambor (Ben Burtt and Matthew Wood). Characters that continued on to the original trilogy were Obi-Wan Kenobi, Darth Vader, the Emperor, Yoda, C-3PO, Tarkin (Wayne Pygram), R2-D2 (Kenny Baker), Chewbacca (Peter Mayhew), Owen and Beru Lars, Mon Mothma (Genevieve O'Reilly), Luke Skywalker, and Leia Organa. Critically, Revenge of the Sith is often called the best of the prequel trilogy and was the highest domestic grossing film in year release of 2005. ("Revenge of the Sith", Star Wars Movie Event)

Hey! At first, I want to say that really adore your essays. I found your blog shortly after I joined tumblr and it was a great beginning.
My question is not only about Loki. Few times you mentioned that queer subtext always existed in cinema. So I wanted to know more about it. Are there any common tricks which artists use? How can we know that it isn't just our imagination?
And if you could give some literature recommendations on this topic I'd be thrilled :)
Hi Anon!
This is a really important question. I’m so glad you asked it, so I’ve bumped you to the front of my inbox queue.
Superhell (Destiel). Superheaven (Aziracrow). Supertime (Lokius). It’s not an accident these types of tragic queer endings are a pattern in our TV media. Though of the three, Good Omens is the most likely to deliver a happy ending eventually, the resources I provide below contextualize why queer subtext and queer tragedy persists. I believe the paper on Cat on a Hot Tin Roof is a particularly important read as it sheds light on tragic queer tropes and utilization of queer subtext from the 1950s that persist to this day.
I do need to clarify a few things:
1.) I’m not a formal scholar. I don’t have a Master’s, let alone a PhD. I would love to continue my education, but I only just finished paying off my student loans. This is to say, most of what I’ve learned is from self-guided reading, watching documentaries, and talking to literary and cinematic professionals and members of the LGBTQAI+ community.
2.) Subtext exists in all forms of art: literature, music, painting, sculptures, film, and so on. There is no 1-to-1 definition of what subtext could be because subtext, by its very definition, is the communicating of information and/or a feeling without communicating it directly. It’s also important to remember that we use subtext in everyday life without realizing it.
3.) It’s necessary to share foundational resources in order to provide a greater contextual understanding in response to your question. The resources I'll be sharing, which will go from broad foundational to specifically queer subtext in cinema, are as follows: A.) Using JSTOR, B.) Linguistics & Subtext, C.) Film History, D.) Queer Subtext in Literature, Theater, and Film.
USING JSTOR
JSTOR is an incredible academic journal article resource. You can sign-up as a user and have access to up to 100 articles per month online for free! If you don’t feel comfortable creating an account, you can also visit your local library, who more likely than not have a JSTOR membership.
When searching for articles, I recommend using these keywords: queer, homosexuality, subtext, literature, film, history.
LINGUISTICS & SUBTEXT
Pragmatics
-- Jerome Bruner’s “Pragmatics of Language and Language of Pragmatics” (Available on JSTOR; Published by The Johns Hopkins University Press)
-- Kristin Borjesson’s “The Semantics-Pragmatics Interface: The Role of Speak Intentions and Nature of Implicit Meaning Aspects” (Available on JSTOR; Published by Armand Colin)
Iceberg Theory and Theory of Omission
-- Silvia Ammary’s “Poe’s ‘Theory of Omission” and Hemingway’s ‘Unity Effect’” (Available on JSTOR; Published in the Edgar Allan Poe Review)
-- Charles J. Nolan, Jr’s “‘Out of Season’: The Importance of Close Reading’” (Available on JSTOR; Published in the Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature)
-- Paul Smith’s “Hemingway’s Early Manuscripts: The Theory and Practice of Omission” (Available on JSTOR; Published by Journal of Modern Literature)
Implicature
-- Catherine Abell’s “Pictorial Implicature” (An important read as it provides academic context on interpretation of the visual medium, which is connected to interpretation of film; Available on JSTOR; Published by The American Society for Aesthetics)
-- Eric Swanson’s “Omissive Implicature” (Linguistic study on implied communication through omission) Available on JSTOR; Published by University of Arkansas Press)
-- Jacques Moeshcler’s “On the Pragmatics of Logical Connectives” (Published in the book: “Aspects of Linguistic Variation)
Exformation
-- David Foster Wallace’s “Laughing with Kafka” (Yes, the same writer of the book, Infinite Jest! A quick 4-page read that explains exformation in literature using Kafka as an example; Available on JSTOR; Published in Log by Anyone Corporation)
-- Stephen J. Burn’s “Reading the Multiple Drafts Novel” (23 pages; can be a slog to read, but it addresses the issues of “canon”; Available on JSTOR; Published by The Johns Hopkins University Press)
FILM HISTORY
Generally, I recommend looking up Hollywood History pre-code (Hays Code aka the Motion Picture Production Code from 1930-1967). Notice that the code’s abandonment was gradual in the 60s, which was when the U.S.’s sexual revolution occured. The MPAA Film Rating System went into effect in 1968.
Sin if Soft Focus: Pre-Code Hollywood by Mark A. Vieira
Available in hard cover on Amazon (looks like there’s only 1 copy left); no digital version that I can find. You may be able to find this at your library.
Forbidden Hollywood: The Pre-Code Era (1930-1934): When Sin Rules the Movies by Mark A. Vieira
Available on Kindle. Similar to Vieira’s first book but considered inferior.
The Celluloid Closet: Homosexuality in the Movies by Vito Russo
Published in the 1980s, a groundbreaking work and the first of its kind. It’s dated but still considered critical reading.
Screening the Sexes: Homosexuality in the Movies by Parker Tyler
Available in hardcover and paperback. This is also considered critical reading to be paired with Celluloid Closet.
Images in the Dark: An Encyclopedia of Gay and Lesbian Film and Video by Raymond Murray
Available in paperback on Amazon (1 copy left); likely to be in the library as well.
QUEER SUBTEXT IN LITERATURE, THEATER, AND FILM
Queerbaiting and Fandom: Teasing Fans through Homoerotic Possibilities
The first book of its kind, published in 2019. A must-read as contributing articles include analysis on Supernatural, Sherlock, and Merlin, among many others. I highly recommend reading the entire book, but it is expensive. You may be able to find this at your library.
My recommended articles from this book:
-- Joseph Brenann’s “Introduction: A History of Queerbaiting” is critical to understanding the Loki series specific place in queer fandom and media history.
-- Monique Franklin’s “Queerbaiting, Queer Readings, and Heteronormative Viewing Practices”
-- Guillaume Sirois’s “Hollywood Queerbaiting and the (In)Visibility of Same-Sex Desire
-- Christoferr Bagger’s “Multiversal Queerbaiting: Alan Scott, Alternate Universes, and Gay Characters in Superhero Comics”
Fandom: Identities and Communities in a Mediated World
About half the price of Queerbaiting and Fandom but significantly more broad in scope.
My recommended articles from this book:
-- Cornel Sandvoss’s The Death of the Reader? Literary Theory and the Study of Texts in Popular Culture
-- Derek Johnson’s “Fantagonism: Factions, Institutions, Constitutive Hegemonies of Fandom”
Sir Gawain and the Green Knight (Reading of epic poem recommended)
-- David L. Boyd’s “Sodomy, Misogyny, and Displacement: Occluding Queer Desire in Sir Gawain and the Green Knight" (available on JSTOR; from Arthuriana published by Scriptorium Press)
Oscar Wilde’s The Picture of Dorian Gray (Reading the novel recommended)
-- Jeff Nunokawa’s “Homosexual Desire and the Effacement of the Self in ‘The Picture of Dorian Gray’” (available on JSTOR; Published by The Johns Hopkins University)
-- Ed Cohen’s “Writing Gone Wilde: Homoerotic Desire in the Closet of Representation” (available on JSTOR; Published by Cambridge University Press)
-- Sandra Mayer’s “‘A Complex Multiform Creature’: Ambiguity and Limitation Foreshadowed in the Early Critical Reception of Oscar Wilde” (available on JSTOR; Published in AAA: Arbeiten aus Anglistik und Amerikanistik)
Tennessee Williams’s Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (Reading the short story [“Three Players of a Summer Game” and stage play and watching the film adaptation highly recommended)
-- Dean Shackelford’s “The Truth That Must Be Told: Gay Subjectivity, Homophobia, and Social History in “‘Cat on a Hot Tin Roof’”. (A must-read, in my opinion. You see a lot of patterns that continue in our subtextual queer stories to this day, concerning since Williams’s play was written in the early 1950s. Available on JSTOR; published in The Tennessee Williams Annual Review)
I hope these resources are helpful and interesting to you! Happy reading!
