Wonhyo had as many related anecdotes as his outstanding abilities and unusual behavior. In the Samguk Yusa, there is a story that Kim Yu-sin went to Goguryeo in 661 to deliver military provisions to So Jeong-bang, a Tang general who was besieging Pyongyang. So Jeong-bang drew a picture of a calf and an orchid bird (鸞鳥) and sent it to Kim Yu-shin after receiving the military rations delivered by the Silla army, and Wonhyo interpreted the picture as a cipher text saying "Go back quickly."[27] It is said that he interpreted it. In fact, on his return, Yushin Kim was caught in a siege by the Goguryeo army and almost died. In addition, there are quite a few folktales or historical stories that boast of his outstanding magical powers or excellence as a monk.

Previously, it was written that he founded the Buddhist chanting called 'Namu Amitabha' [28], but in reality it is not. Recitation of Buddhist chanting, such as Namu Amitabha, was emphasized in the Pure Land Church even before Wonhyo, and Wonhyo was also greatly influenced by this Pure Land thought. It seems to be an expanded interpretation of what Ilyeon, who recorded the Samguk Yusa, said that even the poor or ignorant could memorize the tree (Buddhist chanting) because of Wonhyo.

As famous as it is, there are many names derived from Wonhyo. Wonhyodaegyo Bridge in Seoul is representative. Wonhyo-ro, Yongsan-gu, Seoul was named 'Motomachi' during the Japanese colonial period, but it was changed to Wonhyo-ro using the same Chinese characters in the process of renaming after liberation. Wonhyo-ro, located in Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongsangbuk-do, is also named after Wonhyo.

The 46th generation descendant of Wonhyo is the monk Seok-wu.# However, surprisingly, this part is not known.

Because Wonhyo's actions were so impressive, monks and masters who claimed to have attained enlightenment appearing in mass-produced martial arts and other domestic creations simply ate everything, including alcohol and dog meat. And it became a reality… Of course, even if it is not such a 'self-proclaimed', there are quite a few monks who have truly attained enlightenment, but have referred to themselves as ttaengchu and made unconventional remarks and actions.

It is said that there is a prophecy called Wonhyo Gyeolseo. However, among skeptics, the argument that the word 'first discoverer' was transmitted somewhere, and the opinion that it is a forgery such as Gyeokam Yurok [29], which is known to have been written by Nam Sa-go, and Songha's secret are alternate. At least, the two mentioned earlier were made to be rice cakes by nationalists, but Wonhyo Gyeolseo was just buried. #

Skeleton water anecdotes are, of course, skull water, so come after Undertale! When Sands became famous, it was also intertwined with this.

Along with Uisang, Jajang, and Doseon, it is very common to hear that Wonhyo was the founder of most ancient temples. Even looking at the distribution of temples related to Wonhyo in Korea, it would seem unrelated to Wonhyo's life story. Of course, most of them have no historical credibility and can be seen as an act to increase the authority of the temple by borrowing Wonhyo's fame. If all the stories about the foundations of the temples are true, it would not be enough for those monks to pass away after only building temples for the rest of their lives.

The Pianist (2010) [youtube] - "Oh Je Ro is a musical genius who had always dream of learning the piano, but had to work in a piano factory as tuner instead of going to school in order to support his sick father. He had despaired of ever being given a chance to learn and thought the name his father gave him sounded like "Oh, Zero", signifying his lack of hope in the future. This changes when he meets an elementary school teacher, Yoon In Sa, and begins a delicate love story with her." (personal note: While you can tell it's his first time acting outside of SHINee's mvs, he's still super cute (granted, I'm very biased, so that anything I say with a grain of salt lol)

Salamander Guru and the Gang (2012) [dramacool] - "A pair of common thieves and a young computer hacker run a fortunetelling scam, while helping people with their personal problems in their spare time." (note: Kibum and Taemin do cameo in this, as well)

Canola (2016) [dramacool] - "Twelve years after having lost her grand daughter at a market, grand mother and grand daughter become reunited. But things are not as good and perfect as they were twelve years earlier. (note: his first movie! 🥺)

Drinking Solo (2016) [dramacool] - "The story depicts people drinking alcohol alone for different reasons and the romance between Jin Jeong Seok and Park Ha Na. They both work at a private institute for people preparing for their civil service examinations in Noryangjin, Seoul. He is an arrogant, but popular instructor and she is a rookie instructor who struggles to survive in the private institute world." (note: full disclosure, I could not stand the main leads, but I was watching this for Kibum anyways, and he was phenomenal lol Minho just has a cameo appearance in this, and that's episode 5, I believe)

Derailed (2016) [dramacool] - "Four runaways trying to survive and make ends meet struggle day by day. Enter Ma Dong-Seok. He tried to help but they took advantage of the wrong guy. So it's the classic mistake of wrong guy at the wrong time." (note: one of my favorite roles he's done. he didn't have to go as hard as he did but he did and i'm grateful)

Hwarang: The Poet Warrior Youth (2016-2017) [viki] [dramacool] - "Revolves around an elite group of male warrior youth called Hwarang who grow through passion and love in Seorabeol, the capital of the ancient kingdom of Silla." (note: i have watched this....many times. I love it unapologetically. Kim Sooho has done nothing wrong ever in his life)

Somehow 18 (2017) [dramacool] - "A handsome orthopedic surgeon loses his first love who committed suicide when he was in his high school days. To save her he gets the chance to go back in time."

The Most Beautiful Goodbye in the World (2017) [dramacool] - "The story revolves around a family with their highs and lows when their beloved mother only has one month left to live." (note: I bought this one on dvd so i could watch it when I'm ready but it sounds so sad 🥺 i have to psych myself up for it)

The Princess and the Matchmaker (2018) [dramacool] - "Princess Songhwa refuses her fate of marrying someone who matches her marital harmony. There are four men on her future husband list with different fate signs. Refusing her fate, she decides to leave the palace and find her husband by herself. Seo Do Yoon is a person who interprets marital harmony signs. He is very skilled at his craft and, consequently, selected as the one to read the marital harmony signs between Princess Songhwa and the four men on her husband list."

Illang: The Wolf Brigade (2018) [dramacool] - "Set in the distant future where both North and South Koreas agree to establish a joint government, which has been in preparation for a duration of seven years, the plot focuses on political uprisings on opposing sides which grow fierce when a special police unit is formed to stop the chaos." (note: 🥺😭)

The Battle of Jangsari (2019) [viki] [dramacool] - "A unit of student soldiers on a diversionary mission for the Battle of Incheon during the Korean War in 1950." (note: yeah so i was a complete mess for like the last twenty minutes so just prepare yourself (it's well worth it, though, he was absolutely amazing in this))

Lovestruck in the City (2020-2021) [dramacool] - "Park Chae Won, an honest and overly passionate architect who loves the city streets. After a woman that he calls the “camera thief” steals his heart one summer night and then disappears, he is unable to get over her. Lee Eun Oh, a freelance marketer who spontaneously decides to adopt a false identity in an unfamiliar place. She accidentally ends up falling in love with Park Chae Won while posing as the free-spirited Yoon Sun Ah."

Yumi's Cells (2021) [viki] [dramacool] - "The story of an ordinary office worker named Yumi-from the point of view of the many brain cells in her head controlling her every thought, feeling, and action." (note: just, so adorable so far. Minho plays a side character who shows up occasionally (heavily in the first two episodes), but the story is based off of a web comic that I read when I found out he got cast as Wook and honestly it's worth the watch even if he wasn't in it)

Kdrama women I love (Part 2)

Sorry, not sorry, I just can’t stop thinking about them!

Cha Soo-hyun from Signal: Imagine having a powerhouse like Kim Hye-soo on your cast and then saddling her with an awkward/tragic workplace romance in lieu of idk actual character development that happens ON SCREEN as opposed to off it. I mean, Signal is excellently made, but there’s no denying that Cha Soo-hyun got a raw-ish deal. I would have loved to see her grow into the badass cop she is when we meet her first, but most of her time onscreen is spent reacting to events set in motion by The Men, and just, like, why. In my head, the perfect fic for Cha Soo-hyun would cover the years after Lee Jae-han’s disappearance and before Park Hae-young’s entry; so much of her struggle in the early years was to be taken seriously as a cop, and I want to see her doing that without Lee Jae-han’s help. I would also NOT be opposed to a post canon OT3; it could be incredibly fun to write the tangled dynamics of that, especially now that Cha Soo-hyun isn’t the wide eyed rookie that Lee Jae-han knew, and Park Hae-young’s YEARNING to belong would neatly fold into what his sunbaes could offer. 

Ahn Young-yi from Misaeng: My god, this woman suffered in Misaeng. I just want the fic in which she lets herself be angry. I fully understand her choices in Misaeng- the tightrope that she’s walking in the hopes of survival- but I won’t deny that I felt robbed of the satisfaction of seeing her hurl a rock or three at the heads of her misogynist colleagues and boss. There’s probably a fic out there about how Young-yi starts to build her networks with the other women at One International, and how she climbs the ladder to power. I want this to be a story about women making space for the ones after them, and pulling them up with them. It’s the story she deserves, along with all the other women in that series, whose stories were sidelined to make space for The Men. 

Yoon Hee-soo from Into The Ring: That woman is going to be President in ten years and nobody will convince me otherwise. Love her pragmatism, her wicked, trollish sense of humour, her ambition and the fact that she cares deeply but isn’t performative about it. She’s the one I would trust to Get Things Done, just as I would trust Goo Se-ra to rock the comfortable status-quo. Together (and with the intrepid Gong-myung) they will CHANGE THE WORLD. Where’s the fic, world, where??? ( side-eyes self) ps. I hear there’s a season 2 in the works and if it doesn’t give me some version of this fic, I shall be very sad. 

Jang Ro-sa from Hospital Playlist : WHERE is the 70 episode show about the Life of Jang Ro-sa? I loved her from the first episode where she’s so matter-of-fact about her marriage of convenience; how on earth did she manage to raise a bunch of kids who ALL fell in love with God first and forever? Why didn’t she become a pianist? What are she and Jeong-su doing on that pilgrimage/ road trip ? I just want to know ALL of it. Someone write it * puppy face *

Kim Sang-sook from Into the Ring- Jang Hye-jin brings so much sparkling charm to her role as Se-ra’s mom, I just fell crazily in love with her. I just love how much she’s just herself and unfazed by other people’s opinions of her; i love that she fucks up on the regular but with STYLE. I think that’s a lovely trait that she’s passed on to her daughter- one that will carry her through her chosen life of MAKING THE WORLD BETTER. Anyways, where’s the fic where Sang-sook gets involved in some pyramid marketing scheme and Gong-myung has to bail her out of it and they both have to keep it secret from Se-ra and her dad? I demand this be put in my eyeballs AT ONCE. 

Do Hae-won from Beyond Evil: My god, a villain’s villain. Gil Hae-yeon puts the fear of the devil into you every time she slithers onto the screen with her weaponized cloying, subservient femininity. She seems so brittle, but beneath it is the hard rock of years of bitterness. The show doesn’t bother to do more than hint at the reasons why- because of course, female villains are never afforded the interiority of their male counterparts, or even chance for understanding- but I think Gil Hae-yeon manages to convey both her resentment at this world ruled by men and their rules. and her contempt for them as a class in every scene. I wonder how things would have been different- if they would have been- if she’d had a daughter, instead of a son. Anyways, an absolutely riveting performance, and I think that’s the only reason I am sort of tempted to contemplate a post canon fic for her. How does she survive jail? What does she do after? Who’s going to write it for me? (SIGH.)

Jung Geum-ja from Hyena- I don’t think a lot needs to be said about why Jung Geum-ja is literally one of the best female characters ever to be written in a kdrama. Kim Hye-soo is in her element in her role as this half-gangster/ half- vengeful angel, 100% unforgettable woman. Love to see sexpot Ju Ji-hoon fold like a pack of cards in the face of that unbearably sexy combination of wit, grit and panache; but ALSO love watching every woman in a radius of 5 kms faint from lust and longing to be her and be with her at the same time. Luckily for me, I don’t have to write any of the fic, everyone who’s watched the show just head over to Gin’s AO3 page and treat yourself.

Hospital Playlist S02E02- Analysis (3/3)

Golden moments (in order of appearance)

This episode was loaded with heartwarming scenes.

The conversation between the two mothers where one comforts the other is the first time this episode activates your tear ducts. This happens in hospitals often- veteran guardians helping the new ones and giving them courage. The very fact that the makers decided to include this tender scene is beautiful.

The most understated, yet poignant moment is when Ik-jun joins Soek-hyeong in the garden outside, each looking nowhere in particular but soaking in the strength the other’s company provides to overcome the sadness they have just gone through. Soek-hyeong struggles with figuring out how to console a grieving mother while Ik-jun is uncharacteristically at a loss for words with no advice to dole out. The intimacy of this moment is a reminder of how much these 5 depend on each other to face the world in their own ways.

Jeong-won making Seung-won’s mother understand her child’s pain and fears is another touching moment. It reinforces something we already knew about him as a doctor. His deep compassion, vast experience and understanding of children and parents makes him the perfect paediatric surgeon. To think that he almost left this behind <shudder shudder>

Best Teacher Award- Chae Song-hwa went all out in proving that she deserves this award.

There hasn’t been a finer moment of mentorship in this show before. Not only does she school a snooty woman on how residents deserve as much respect, she also turned down an amazing opportunity to become more well known among neurosurgeons in the country. The reason behind it makes us wish that we had teachers like these. Or even, become a Chae Song-hwa to someone. To Song-hwa all we want to say is, “I like you.”

Last but not the least, the letter from the parents who lost their baby made us want to hug Soek-hyeong. It was unlike him to reach out the way he did and Seok-hyeong in his ObGyn element is the best thing about him. Our bear needed a lot of hugs through out the episode, instead he gave us one in the form of the song he sang. *fetches tissues*

Be it personally or professionally, he gently let Gyeo Wool grows in him. And it’s getting more and more significant ♥️

Ahhhh btw I love Jeong Ro Sa in ep 11. Her happy expression looking at her happy son was everything. I bet she already figured out that it was NOT JUST SOME SLIP OF THE TONGUE when Jeong Won said “... it’s not Song Hwa”

Farewell Season 1!!!

The last episode of season 1 has arrived and before watching it. I just want to create a small post in dedication to this show. This is probably the first time I have done it for any show and that is why I don't want the finale to affect my opinion. I admit I was attracted to hospital playlist mainly because I love dramas that revolve around a group of friends more than romantic ones or any other genre but I didn't actually get to start watching until 10 episodes had already been uploaded so I didn't participate much in the agonizing wait but now I am here my fellow fans waiting for season 2 with you guys!

This show had an amazing cast, none of the actors feel out of place and the chemistry is perfect. The friendship between the main cast feels genuine and I enjoy every moment of them being together. The side characters are amazing as well and they fit well into the story. A special shout to Lee Ik-sun, she is my favorite of the secondary characters and my love for her slowly grew as the series continued. Also my favorite friendship after the main cast is of Ro-sa and Jong-soo, it was something very beautiful and refreshing to see. Two elderly friends giving each other support and companionship.

All the characters very grounded and relatable. Showing their good sides and as well as their imperfections, I found different parts of me relating to different characters. Song-hwa for her soft heart and love for rain, Joon-wan for over dramatic flair and love for chocolate, Ik-jun for his unwavering loyalty but also for the downside of always hiding his true feelings, Seok-hyung for his social awkwardness and Jung-won for his pure love towards children and especially showing how devoted he is to his religion. I am not Christian myself but as someone who also loves their religion as well and likes to follow it in their daily life. I loved seeing a main character who was religious and I really hope that they work with his arc carefully and give him a satisfying ending for this season.

Overall it was rollercoaster of emotions and I really gonna miss this show a lot. It truly spoke to my soul and gave me motivation to work hard for my own career as well. A special thank you to the director Shin won-ho and writer Lee Woo-jeong for giving this amazing series and I wish the best for season 2.

If anyone actually read all of this. Thank you so much and I hope the finale was satisfying, I can't wait for season two and I really wish the cast stays the same!
